What a mess!!! (Open Chore)

What a day! Taei just wanted to go collapse. It had been an exhausting day, but it wasn't over yet. She had been asked by a brown sister to help organize some papers, but she didn't feel like it. Sighing, she continued on to the library.

Finally arriving at the doors she went inside to see... chaos! What in the world? There was whole bookshelves that were unshelved. Books lying on the floor, and everywhere else. "Thank goodness you're here!" the brown sister almost tackled her when she came in the door. "They just all flew off the shelf! I don't know what did it. I was organizing the catalogue and, well, you can see what I saw when I looked up."

Oh, my! I'll need help for all this. "I'll get us some help." With that Taei reopened the doors and grabbed the first novices that she saw. "Come with me, now."

Showing them how the books were organized right fast she told them to ask her if they had any questions and went to work. All this knowledge! She just hoped that none of the books were damaged.

OOC: Sorry for the delay, but have fun girls. :D

Zeveria was in the library studying for her mathematics class and was having trouble. Sighing she stood up to get a book to help her with the equation she was working on. Leaving her things she went to the shelves to look. The books were always so dusty. She pulled one out and the dust tickled her nose and she started to sneeze.

“aaacchhhhhhhhooooooooo!!!†she sneezed and felt herself fall back.

All of a sudden she was falling in to the book shelves!!! They started to sway and teeter.

“OH NO!!! Please don’t fall†she pled as she tried to steady the shelves. When it looked like they were going to stay, she heaved a sigh and left with her book.

As she walked to her table she felt a wind blow past her, and then she heard it. A bunch of books falling of the shelves she was just at. Sitting down she winced at the noise. The Brown Sister that was organising something looked up and a look of sheer horror came over her face. She looked like she did not know hat to do until an accepted came walking into the area. The Sister ran over to her and said.

"They just all flew off the shelf! I don't know what did it. I was organizing the catalogue and, well, you can see what I saw when I looked up."

The look that was on the accepted face was one of frustration. The accepted turned around and walked through the half opened doors, spying her and the other girls at the table she called them over and instructed them on how to put the book back. The look of relief that came on to her and the brown sister’s face was noticeable as they saw the books were not damaged. Looking at he all the book Zeveria felt in herself that she was also relieved there was no damage.

‘It would have been a shame to have any ruined.’ she thought.

Looking up she saw her roomy Laurana walking in to join in the help. Waving she smiled and started to shelve the few books she had picked up. She hoped they could get this done quickly; she had her classes to study for.

The novices were working quickly and Taei hoped they were doing it right. She shivered at the though of having to re-shelve all the books that were being shelved. So far it appeared that most if not all of the books had avoided damage.

Relieved that the books had escaped harm, Taei relaxed a little. She still felt like hovering over the novices replacing them on the shelves, but there were too many of them left still for that. She just had to hope that they headed the instructions that she had given. By the light, if they make me have to reshelve half of these... She simmered on the thought of spending the rest of her day rshelving already shelved books.

OOC: I'll jump into this chore if it isn't too late.

IC:

Ranine Alsufai glared at the paper before her, as if doing so could improve the scratching, sprawling nature of her inexperienced cursive. Before arriving at the tower she’d been, roughly, literate. There’d never been the money or paper to practice writing, however, and whenever she was forced to now, her hand was uglier than all but a few of the other novices.

Her glare was interrupted by a bustling Accepted – Taei was her name – who seemed to be gathering up assorted novices at their studies. A heartbeat too late, Ranine made a break for the exit, before she too was swept up in Taei’s wake. This could only mean one thing, Ranine thought with a grimace: unscheduled chores. She didn’t mind work, but she much preferred studying – and sleeping was superior to both.

Of course, these days she did them in pretty much inverse proportion to her desires. Inverse proportion, Ranine noted with satisfaction, was a concept totally unfamiliar to her before her arrival at the Tower. See? She could learn mathematics, no matter what that scabby Brown sister said.

Taei was speaking to her little flock of white-dressed assistants, and expecting full attention. Ranine resolved to give her – if not quite what she wanted – enough to get the job done. Books falling on the floor? Putting them back? Piece of cake.

Moments later, Ranine wasn’t sure she hadn’t jumped the bow (ooc: a colloquialism for “jumped the gun). The explanation of the White Tower’s cataloging system left her practically breathless – and not with anticipation. How on earth was anyone supposed to remember all of that?! Plus, she noted, Taei seemed far more eager to supervise the Novices and offer “helpful†pointers than to actually get her hands dirty in the actual reshelving process.

Ranine was loath to discover that even when standing on her tippiest of tiptoes, a couple of shelves remained well out of her reach. Not for the first time she found herself ruing the fact that her father had fallen in love with a Cairhienen. Why couldn’t her mother have been Andoran, or even a borderlander? With her short brown hair and slight build, it wouldn’t have been out of the question for the Accepted – Taei – to mistake her for a boychild. It had happened before. Except for this bloody white dress which clearly marked her status.

Bending back down to scoop up another book, Ranine gulped in horror. The book in question – a history of border disputes in southeast Andor and southwest Cairhien – had suffered a bad break along its parchment spine. Loose pages spilled across the tiled floor and Ranine looked guiltily between Accepted and tome. Taei’s eyes met her own, and the Novice blanched. This wasn’t her fault, no matter how broken the book was. She wished she was more confident that the Accepted would see it that way.

ooc: If you want to come down like a ton of bricks on Ranine for “damaging†the book, that’s fine by me – she could use an “enemy†or two. If, however, Taei is more reasonable than the average Accepted in the WoT novels, then bravo for her! Lol…either way it’s fun.

OOC: Anyone who wants feel free to join in. I could keep this going for awhile. :D

IC:

Taei was hovering. She knew it, but she couldn't stop. All these wonderful tomes of knowledge laying on the floor almost made her heart give out. All this knowledge it would be a shame to have any of it ruined.

As if on cue, a novice, Ranine was her name, Taei thought, picked up a book with a cracked spine and pages went everywhere. Quickly Taei helped the girl gather the pages that were scattered on the floor. Taking the book from the poor girl and giving her a sympathetic smile she said, "It was bound to happen sooner or later with this many old volumes on the floor." She could see that the novice was extremely relieved that Taei didn't tear her to shreads. Taei was more relieved that none of the pages were damaged, though.

She took the now unbound volume over to the Brown Sister who fretted over it for a minute before taking it into the archive room for another sister to rebind.

Looking back over at the novices she was tempted to tell them all to go, but there were just too many books. They all were intentionally not looking at her. She figured that they were waiting for her to explode at all of them because of not doing things right. Taei was more relieved that so far only one book had been damaged in the fall. With a small sigh she went back over and picked up a stack to help reshelve. They're nervous enough, I don't need to hover any more.

IC: With her mind lost thinking about her homework, Zeveria was brought out of her thoughts by a small disturbance. Hearing a scuffle, she noticed a short haired novice go white and look as if she wanted to melt away. Standing up to see what the matter was. In the hands of the novice she could see a book and its papers spread all over. If the book had a stomach, Zeveria would have thought it emptied it self on the floor. Feeling bad for the girl, Zeveria went to help. Picking up some of the papers, she handed them to Taei. Patting the girl on the back, Zeveria smiled.

“Don’t worry she’s a nice one.†a sigh of relief came from her companion. “My name is Zeveria. What is your name?â€

IC: Hearing the other girl’s words, Ranine felt herself sigh – almost involuntarily, and privately she rebuked herself for losing control of her appearance.

“Don’t worry she’s a nice one. My name is Zeveria. What is your name?â€

Ranine pushed her short brown her out of her eyes – it was getting close to time for a cutting if the bangs could fall down so far – and smiled at her fellow Novice. She knew it was a smile of relief as much as anything else, but for one she didn’t care. It felt nice to have someone put in a kind word, free of charge.

Working up as genuine a smile as she could – and sparing half of it on the Accepted – and Ranine introduced herself.

“I’m Ranine. Ranine Alsufai, and I just know we’re going to get along famously.â€

What a curious thing to say, Ranine thought, to a complete stranger. The choice of words was strange to her, and she assumed that her lack of sleep since arriving at the tower was beginning to catch up with her. Blood and ashes, if her vocabulary abandoned her then there was no hope at all of surviving here!

Suddenly frowning, she turned briefly from Zeveria and began gathering loose pages of the book once again. Once they were all returned to their proper sheaf, she returned her attention to her new friend.

“Thanks for the heads up. It’s – I’ve met a few Accepted that haven’t been so forgiving since I’ve been here.â€

Ranine was gratified to notice that Taei soon began to gather and reshelf books herself, rather than just passively supervising. Maybe today wasn’t going to be so bad after all.

OOC: Sorry it took me awhile to get back to this post. Don't know what happened.

With a smile Zeveria, put an other book away. the volume was about the blightborder. it looked interesting. She should read it sometime.

"I think we will to. how long have you been in the tower??"

Ranine answered as she to contuined to shelve books. "A few days"

A few Days!! WOW, Zeveria remembered her first ew days, though she has not been at the tower very long either. they were ruff, but she made friends quickly. her first night was an adventure. meeting her roomates, Gianna and Lashara. thay were some of her closest friends at the moment.

"i remember my first few days. Remind me to tell you about them sometime. do you have any roomates? a mentor? tell me about yourself."

Trying to scan all the books at the same time for signs of damage she didn't mind that the novices started talking amongst themselves. As long as the work was done, that's all that really mattered. Finally resigning the task as impossible she gave them some new instructions. "Please just let me know if one of the books appears unusual, spine cracked or broken, something like that."

Looking up and making sure that they all understood she went back to her work. Picking up the books and reshelving them one by one. Being sure to scan each one for any damage.

OOC: I have been so slack... sorry all, will try to be better. :)

Hearing Taei speak, Zeveria worked faster. she really appreciated the fact that she would work along side the novices. doing as requested, Zeveria looked at each book and examinted it before putting it on the shelf. she loved the smell of books. sh eloved knowledge and learning to accumalate talents.humming to herself, zeveria worked steady. looking at the refreance numbers written on each book and placing them in the right order. before she knew it the job was done.

being dismissed, Zeveria went back to her studing and Ranine followed her to her desk. she sat down and the two of them talked. Zeveria was glad to have made an other friend. life in the tower was not going to be to bad in fact it could be fun, if you had the right attitude. after helping ranine with her sums, zeveria ran off to her mid day chores in the imfremary, Cavana sedai liked the floors bleached twice a week. it was a gruling job, but better than the pots in Zeveria's opinion.Yawning, she hoped to get this done as soon as possible so she could see if there was time to rest in the after noon. naps were a blessed thing!!

It was almost absurd to think of so many books in one place, to say nothing of actually seeing them with her own eyes. It wasn’t the first time Ranine had been in the library, but it never ceased to awe her, especially as she sifted through the countless volumes that still remained to be shelved. Very few showed any visible damage – thank goodness! – and Taei seemed congenial enough. There were worse ways to spend a morning than sorting books, she thought without reproof.

As the morning stretched on towards noon, however, and Ranine began to worry she’d not find time to finish rewriting her essay if last of the shelving wasn’t soon completed, it was. Almost abruptly, the last of the books were back on the shelves and Taei was dismissing the Novices one by one.

Ranine blinked. Where had her mind gone? It seemed like just a moment ago, that there was another aisle on which they’d not even begun. Sighing, she decided that maybe her essay would just have to survive without another revision. If her mind was going to wander so badly as that, then she’d likely not improve what was already on the page.

The other Novices began to disperse, and Ranine followed Zeveria over to the table where she’d been working prior to the, ahem, interruption. She meant to thank the other girl for her empathy over the volume that she’d let fall to the floor.

ooc: not much time to write today. Busy, busy busy.

Other than a few folded pages everything seemed to be in order. Taei was relieved. It would have been a shame to loose any of the knowledge that the library contained. She knew that anything that really was important or any volumes that were aged were kept locked away, but still, having to replace anything would have taken the sisters quite some time.

Seeing the last books put back on the shelves she dismissed them all. Thanking each one for their help and sending them back about their business. The Brown sister that gave us the chore will probably never notice it was completed. She smirked slightly at the thought. Having sent the last novice back to their day she picked up her own volumes that she had laid on the table earlier and went back to her research. Well, at least something unordinary happened today.

OOC: All yours girls, feel free to socialize at will. :)
