Re-reading the series from the beginning and now I wonder...

He also switches from 3rd person Omniscient to 1st person quite a bit right?  It's possible he was using the formal Myrddraal as a narrator, then someone was thinking about them as a Fade?  I'm not sure exactly where in the book you are referring to though so I can't say for sure.

Not exactly sure on the switch thing, but it does seem sensible.

other reasons.

1. He does it to make it realistic. Like when you have nicknames for things, you dont always speak or think of them as the same word all of the time. Sometimes you think/say 1, sometimes another.

2. Thoguht it would be dull if he used the same word every sigle time and thought it would be better if he mixed it up.

3. Seeing things from different Points of View, and PoV change with more experience.

ie- Rand would thik of Myrddraal differently than someone in Illian etc...

ie2- At the start, Rand would think of Myrddraal as mythical beasts, thus name it one thing. Later, when he has seen and fought them, he would think of them differently, possibly with a different name.

The entire series is told in third person limited omniscent. There is no first person narration at all  :)
