Help - Story Time for pre-K/K

Hello,

I thought I would bounce this off of board members for ideas -

I have a 5 and 6 yr old that love books and Princesses (thanks to Disney and the various Barbie movies:)).  My wife and I read to them regularly - but its the typcial Dr Suess or other children's picture books.  I would like to start reading 'full' stories to them, but about the only thing I can find age appropraite are the Winnie the Pooh stories.

I don't think they are ready for either Harry Potter or the Chronicals on Narnia.  I was hoping to find a story book for 1001 Arabian Nights at both Barnes and Noble and Borders but struck-out.  The closest thing I can find is a story book bible - but seeing that we aren't religious, not what I was looking for.

So anyone have somthing that I shoud be looking for?  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

There is a story that my grandmother read to me... It's called Love You Forever. Don't remember if it has a religious feel under it, but it's about a mother's love for her son as he grows. It's really sweet.

It's not a "full story" but it's different from the normal kids books, I think.

Try Hank the Cowdog for those. If you've never read them, they are about a second grade reading level, but understanding level is lower than reading. They are humorous stories about a very egocentric cow dog and his exploits on his (and surrounding) ranches. (Again, my grandmother read these to me at about that age.)
