“Miami Vice” mastermind Michael Mann will direct “Luck,” the HBO pilot about the world of horseracing from David Milch.

 

Mann, whose feature work includes “Thief,” “The Keep,” “Manhunter,” “Last of the Mohicans,” “Heat,” “The Insider,” “Ali,” “Collateral,” “Miami Vice” and “Public Enemies,” hasn’t directed for television since the 1989 NBC pilot “L.A. Takedown.”

 

If it goes forward, this will be the third HBO series from “NYPD Blue” creator Milch, who earlier masterminded the western “Deadwood” and the supernatural drama “John From Cincinnati” for the channel.

Ooh, exciting! I'm hoping this will be more like Deadwood and not John From Cincinnati. JFC was OK at times, but never really got great.
