Imagine the worst living conditions possible. Roll the image around like fine wine, taste its texture—savour. Now try to imagine something far worse.

 

Picture a single, cluttered room filled with beds, children dripping from the ceiling and walls like water from clogged eaves. There is no room to play and there is no room to breathe. It’s suffocating and crushing. And strict.

 

This was the home of No.4. What kind of name is that? A perfectly fitting one for the inmate of a soulless orphanage.

 

Only named children were adopted, and only hard-working, driven children were given names. For everyone else there was a numerical value.

 

His was four.

 

But he was not an orphan, not the way he told it. His parents called him Si`. Muddy tears down their weathered faces, they had promised him they’d be back. He remembered and took it to heart.

 

Si` refused to be called No.4; that was demeaning. He made up names for all the other children and called them by those: Soapy, Bloated, Poppy, Tinder-box, Cheese-guy.

 

And he made things difficult; did he ever! It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate being forced to learn skills so he could be adopted by a rich person to work as a labourer in a factory—alright, yes, it was just like that. It was worse than slavery; at least slaves got called by their real title!

 

He didn’t intend to be adopted, either. No. He was going to stay put until his parents came back. And they would because they gave him their word!

 

But he wasn’t stupid. He was the smartest person ever according to himself, and after years of captivity he understood his parents were unable to come back: someone was preventing them!

 

This started a career of foiled escape attempts because he wasn’t as clever as all that, but he was bloody persistent.

 

It took many years but he finally succeeded.

 

And since he was such a troublesome little wretch, no one really cared.
