The Last Step (Dulcinea's Raising)

Dulcinea stumbled as she stepped out of the glowing oval light for the final time and was caught by Larindhra Sedai, the Mistress of Novices.  After steadying her, Larindhra Sedai drew herself up to complete the ceremony.

"It is done." she proclaimed, and clapped her hands, red fringe swaying.

Dulcinea tried to stand calmly, to be serene.  Outwardly at least.  That was difficult at best, with the weight of memory that came crashing back to her.  One hundred times she had woven, and passed a marker with a six-pointed star to forget and weave again.  One hundred required weaves that she had practiced for nearly a dozen years.  So well that she probably could have woven them in her sleep.  But this testing had not been so easy as that.  She had been hammered by heat and by cold, impeded by walls and mountains and canyons and fire, chased by men and by shadowspawn and even a woman with a frying pan!  It was very difficult to remain serene when naked in another woman's house!  She felt her cheeks heat.  Serene.  She must remain serene.  It was almost over.

"Let no one speak of what has passed here.  It is for us to share in silence with she who experienced it.  It is done."  Larindhra Sedai clapped her hands again.

Light, but she hurt!  She could feel a warm wetness leaking down the side of her head, and her right ankle wouldn't support her full weight.  Serenity had been especially difficult after that eighty-fourth weave.  It was hard to maintain a steady pace when you were limping.  She was also pretty sure her right arm had been broken during the thirty-first weave.  It was a good thing that none of the required weaves required any hand gestures.

"Dulcinea Velasques, you will spend tonight in prayer and contemplation of the burdens you will take up on the morrow, when you don the shawl of an Aes Sedai.  It is done."  Larindhra Sedai clapped her hands a final time.  She surveyed the room, as though making sure that no one would contradict her and then swept out of the room.

Immediately, the other sisters swarmed around Dulcinea.  A Yellow with kind eyes that Dulcinea didn't know offered her Healing, and she gladly accepted.  "You are in bad shape, girl, nearly as bad as I've ever seen.  Didn't you-" the Yellow's mouth snapped shut, and her lips firmed, "Well, that's not to be spoken of."  She finished the weave and Dulcinea felt all her injuries mend, and even her fatigue disappear as a raging hunger grew inside her.  "I'll send word to the kitchens to bring you half again the usual portion."  With that, she swept out.

Dulcinea sighed gratefully, food sounded wonderful.  Making her excuses to the Aes Sedai who still remained, she made her way back to her room.  Prayer and contemplation.  Well, she certainly had much to contemplate.  She pushed open the door of her room in the Accepted's quarters, and was surprised to see a meal laid out that could have fed fifteen women easily.  With a rueful shake of her head, she knew that she would likely eat the entire thing.

So, prayer and contemplation.  Well, she had never been one for prayer.  The wheel weaves as the wheel wills, and all that.  And she could certainly contemplate while she ate.  She sat down at the small table and began to pick pieces off a wedge of cheese.  It tasted wonderful, although she suspected nearly anything would at this point.  So the Yellow had thought that she was one of the worst off that she had seen after the testing.  Did that mean the sister had not seen many testings?  Or had the sisters really made it so difficult for her?  That would be no surprise.  She knew she hadn't made many friends, and had given the Aes Sedai teaching her classes a very hard time.  Light, but she had been a terror as a novice!  It had taken the testing for Accepted to teach her the hard reality of her new station.  She regretted those wasted years now.

It had taken five years, FIVE!, to adjust to life as a novice.  Five years when she had paid no attention at all to her studies, snuck off to the practice yards, nearly caused a riot in the novice quarters by pitting the nobly born girls against the common, and been a raging terror to the Mistress of Novices.  And even after she had settled down, it had been as a means to an end.  She had known that to regain any semblance of her former station she would have to work for it.  As second daughter to a High Lord of Tear she had wielded great influence indeed.  And without any work required.  She was certainly a better person for the Tower's discipline, even when she was playacting at it.  What you played at long enough became your reality, she thought ruefully.  And when she was called to test for Accepted that lesson had been driven home even further.  She had seen what could happen if she kept to her current path, and she had not liked it one bit.  And so she had learned kindness.  An odd lesson for a grown woman to have to learn, but for her it had been the key.  She had never had the need for kindness before, just the pretense.  But many things were easier when she had true friends.  All of whom she would now be leaving behind when she took the shawl.

She sighed and stood, this was much more difficult than she had thought it would be.  She had one more choice to make in the morning -- her new Ajah.  She had never been the most clever of women, apart from the subtleties in the Great Game, intricacies of thought eluded her.  That was very likely why she had taken another eleven years to be called to this testing.  Her thought processes were much to well, blunt.  The negotiating trip with Lillian Sedai had been a disaster, she had not seen at all the things Lillian Sedai had obviously wanted her to, and she could tell the White had been disappointed in her intellectual failings.  She thought she had made the Sister respect her tenacity, at least.  She had kept to her tasks long after another woman would have given in.  But no, the White Ajah would not be for her.  Nor the Brown or Gray, come to think of it.  Yellow was right out, she had a decent aptitude with the Healing weaves, but nothing she wished to devote her life to.  Red seemed...wrong.  She had been bonded to a Warder in that third pass through the Arches, and it had felt right, natural.  That left Blue and Green.  Either seemed a decent option.  But she really didn't know enough of the Ajahs from the outside to choose between them.  Blue and Green.

She fretted over the question the rest of the night, and was startled when she heard a knock at the door.  She had failed to notice the graying light of dawn outside her window.  She stood hurriedly, and ran a comb through her thick mass of black curls.  She grimaced at the face she saw in the looking glass, those curls would never be neatly tamed.  Taking a moment to steady herself, she opened the door to see the Mistress of Novices accompanied by a sister from each Ajah, all wearing their fringed shawls.  She walked with them in silence down to the lowest levels of the Tower where she had been tested just the previous evening.

As Larindhra Sedai opened the door, the Amyrlin Seat called, "Who comes here?"

Dulcinea raised her head and straightened her shoulders.  This was it, she would be Aes Sedai.  "Dulcinea Velasques."

The Amyrlin continued, "For what reason do you come?"

"To swear the Three Oaths and thereby claim the shawl of an Aes Sedai," Dulcinea could feel a note of pride enter her tone.

"By what right do you claim this burden?"

"By right of having made the passage, submitting myself to the will of the White Tower," that note grew stronger, bolder.  It was her right.

"Then enter, if you dare, and bind yourself to the White Tower."

Dulcinea moved forward at a steady pace, neither hurrying nor hanging back.  She stepped through the oval of the ter'angreal, lifeless now, no sheets of flickering light this morning.  Reaching the sisters around the Amyrlin, she knelt and held out her hands.  Shevara Edosian, the Watcher of the Seals, the Flame of Tar Valon, the Amyrlin Seat, put the Oath Rod into her waiting hands then embraced saidar and wove a thin flow of Spirit into the end of the rod.

"Under the Light and my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow to speak no word which is not true."  Dulcinea held back a gasp as the Oath tightened around her.  This would make Da'es Daemar more interesting.  She smiled grimly.  "Under the Light and my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow that I will make no weapon for one man to kill another.  Under the light and by my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow I will never use the One Power as a weapon except against Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme of defending my life or that of my Warder or another sister."  Her smile was very nearly a grimace with the pressure of the Oaths.  But she had done it!  She was truly Aes Sedai!  Certainly this was a station far above High Lady of Tear.

"It is half done," the Amyrlin intoned as she took the Oath Rod away, "And the White Tower is graven in your bones.  Rise now, Aes Sedai, and choose your Ajah, and all will be done that may be done under the Light."

Dulcinea rose smoothly, and looked around her.  The Sitters from each Ajah were clustered all around the room, each holding a shawl fringed in the color of her Ajah.  Once Dulcinea's direction became plain, the others began to leave, the Amyrlin last.  What happened here was for the Ajah alone.  She stopped in front of the group of Sitters, and spoke hesitantly, "I would choose to be a Green, if you will have me."

Jaydena blinked and raised her head from the pillow, she knew she heard a noise but she wasn't sure what it was. There is was again, a loud pounding at her door. She swung her feet over the bed and slid her feet into the green slippers at the edge of her bed. Who could be coming to my door in the middle of the night, I hope it's not something horrible with one of my Sisters. These late night calls always mean something dreadful has happened within the Halls, she thought. Jade slid her arms into the mint green silk nighrobe with the large silver roses on the fabric and tied the belt around her waist. With a yawn she opened the door of her bedroom and saw one of her warders heading for the door. She motioned for him to open the door and she adopted the look of serenity all Aes Sedai learned. An Accepted stood at her door with a scared look on her face, she was so scared that her hands were trembling around the note she held in her hands. Jaydena arched an eyebrow at her and saw the girl looking at her face quickly before lowering her eyes. She shook her head and spoke, "Yes my child that is what can happen to you in service to the Light, keep that in mind. Now give me the note and head back to your bed, you should be sleeping and resting for classes tomorrow." The girl curtsied and scampered back from the door with an audible sigh.

Jade smiled at her gaidin and smoothed a hand over her face, she had forgotten to put her mask over the grisley burns on one side of her face and it was obvious she had scared the Accepted pretty badly. She shook her head and looked down at the note, The girl had better learn some back bone if she want's to be a Green, she'll see worse things than this in her first battle, she thought. Dena slid one of her nails under the envelope and opened it, inside was a note from the Mistress of Novices.

Jaydena Sedai,

This note is to inform you that Dulcinea has passed the test and is currently in her night of contemplation. I apologize for the note being so late, several new novices came in to be put in the books. I have sent notes to your fellow Sitters and we will see you in the morning.

Regards,

Larindhra Sedai

Mistress of Novices

Jaydena smiled and motioned for him to head off to bed, morning would come soon enough and they would see if this one picked the Greens. She had come to terms with denying these girls entrance to the Ajah, she couldn't ever say that it was something she liked but she knew why it was done and why she as ajah head must do it. She headed back to bed and removed her robe and slippers. Sleep didn't come easily these days but she didn't dare take anything for it, after her brush with Lanfear, she couldn't risk sleeping so deeply that the woman assualted her in her dreams again....

The time before dawn came what seemed like a short time later, after she had tossed and turned for the remaining hours of night. Her feet hit the cold floor and she winced. It was time to replace the rug next to her bed that had become worn down. She walked over and left a note to herself to replace the rug and then began her preparations for the ceremony. The pomp of such a thing required that she take extra pains with her appearance. She washed up, scented her body, and applied cosmetics. When she was done with that she slid a green satin dress with a gold underskirt and silver embroidery across the waist, bodice, and cuffs over her head. Around her waist she wore a silver belt formed to look like roses with emeralds as the leaves and rubies as the roses. Years ago her gaidin had had it made for her, she had used her talent for delving to find the stones and then he had made it.

Marching earrings, bracelet, and necklace went around her neck and hair sticks completed the outfit. She pulled her long auburn hair up onto her head and arranged it in an artful design, with the hairsticks she hooked it in place. The matching slippers went onto her feet and the mask was hooked into place with a weave she had created for it. Her shawl hung from a peg and she swung it around her shoulders, it's green fringe falling around her knees and forever reminding her of what she had given up to be here. She ran a hand down the front of it and then pinned it in place with a serpent broach with emerald eyes. Glancing at the sun she walked from the room and left her quarters, setting a ward around the room. Her gaidin was long gone and she could tell by his focus that he was already working the forms in the Warders Yard. She strode down the halls of the Tower, her long legs eating up the space between her quarters and the room where the ceremony was to take place. Her greens eyes caught the sunlight coming through the windows as she took in all her surroundings, always vigilant and aware of possible attacks.

Jade reached the room quickly and she took her place beside one of the Brown Sitters. She nodded at the woman and then turned to glace at one of her own Sitters. Nodding in satisfaction that both of her Sitters were on time and here she waited for the ceremony to begin. The newest raised Aes Sedai from each ajah was also in attendance and she was sure they were excited to be involved in a ceremony from the other end. This time it wasn't then catching their breath as those oaths cinched tight like bands, or them shaking in the presence of so many Aes Sedai and the Amyrlin Seat. Soon the girl arrived and Dulcinea swore her oaths with all the emotion you could expect of someone sure to go Green. At least that is what her Sisters had told her. The girl rose and walked their direction, as she did, the others ajahs began to head off in other directions. "I would choose to be a Green, if you will have me."

Jaydena nodded at the girl and spoke, "I had heard you would chose the Green, please follow me and we will speak of such things in the privacy of our ajah quarters." She nodded to the girl once more and then began to lead the way to the Green quarters. The Halls were empty, dating back to the days when the newly raised Sedai would walk through the Halls naked as the day she was born. They reached the Halls just as the sun was rising farther into the sky and she led the way to the Captain Generals office. She opened the door and removed the wards from around it. With a deep breath to fortify herself against what was about to come, she took a seat behind the large desk in the green leather chair and folded her hands on the cherrywood desk with it's intricate carving of roses, the serpent, and the Aes Sedai symbol. Her Sitters took a place on either side of the desk and she eyed Dulcinea before she spoke. The woman had glanced around the room at the tomes and the swords before focusing on her. "Dulcinea Sedai, why have you chosen the Green Ajah as your home?"

Loraine steeled herself before she left her room. She'd heard a whisper that this new Aes Sedai was leaning towards the Green Ajah, and while she was happy about welcoming a new sister, it was the inevitable set down that was to come that she dreaded. The knot on the back of her head was especially intricate this morning, an effort she hadn't attempted in nearly thirty years. She hadn't realized she'd started it until her hands started aching. Apparently, she'd needed something to concentrate on.

She lifted her chin and stepped into her place among the other Sitters of the Ajahs of the Tower. She even allowed herself a bit of a smile as the new sister stood before them. She stood at Jaydena's back, escorting their newest sister to the Green halls. They didn't meet another sister and Loraine took a moment to note how empty the halls felt without someone's laughter echoing down the corridor. It was haunting.

As they entered Jaydena's office, she settled into what was becoming "her" place on one side of the big desk. She focused on Dulcinea, watching for changes in her expression so she'd know whether she needed protective weaves or not. It was always good to be prepared...

Dulcinea nodded and followed Jaydena Sedai as she led the way to the Green Quarters.  No, just Jaydena, now.  Dulcinea was an Aes Sedai also.  She fidgeted a bit at the uncomfortable tightness of the Oaths as she walked in silence.  She caught herself at it and forced her arms to stillness once more.  A smooth pace and a steady tread.  Surely she would need it now.  She knew that each Ajah had secrets, customs not known to outsiders.  That was what had made choosing among them so difficult, not knowing more than the surface.  She hoped she had made the right decision.

She was led into an office lined with shelves and shelves of books and several swords.  She looked around briefly, taking in the surroundings.  She had never been here on an errand as a novice or Accepted.  She looked back to see that Jaydena had taken a seat behnind an ornate desk with the other two Sitters standing to either side.  Of course.  The Head of each Ajah was a closely guarded secret, and it seemed that Jaydena Headed the Greens.  Interesting.  It had been Jaydena herself that had shattered her misconceptions about the Green Ajah a few years ago.  If not for that encounter, she may have chosen the Blue after all.

"Dulcinea Sedai, why have you chosen the Green Ajah as your home?"

Dulcinea hesitated, she had not thought that she would be required to explain her choice.  But why not?  Her sisters had a right to know who would be joining them.  She nodded slightly.

"The mission of the Green is important.  The Dragon has been Reborn, and the Last Battle will be soon.  I was taken on an excursion with Lillien Sedai of the White a year ago, and I saw much of the upheaval he has caused simply with his presence.  Roving bandits kill in his name.  Men who can channel have organized and walk free.  The mission of other Ajahs is also important, but I would have an active role to play, rather than research in the Tower to which I am not suited.  Healing the wounded is not for me, my Talents do not lie there.  The Reds wish to prevent another Breaking of the World," she paused, and shook her head slightly, "I do not know if that is possible, now.  The Blues and the Grays, they work with the nations to form alliances, to manipulate thrones.  For myself, I think the time for talking is past.  The nations will stand together for Tarmon Gai'don, or they will die alone."  She paused again and forced herself to look each of the sisters in the eyes before finishing, "The Green is the Battle Ajah.  You stand ready for the Last Battle, and will fight the trolloc hordes when they come.  I do not think that wait will be long, now.  Every battle needs soldiers, and I think the Last Battle will require as many soldiers as we can find."

She steeled herself as she forced out her final words, admitting weakness was always humbling at best, "I am new yet, but I have been tested, and passed, as all Aes Sedai.  I was strong enough for that, I have hope that I will be strong enough to face the horrors I know will come.  I expect to have a year, perhaps two, or perhaps only a few months to learn what I must before the Shadow descends from the Blight.  Already Kandor has been taken, and I expect others of the Borderlands will be overrun in the first assault.  New as I am, I am a thin shield indeed to stand against the Shadow.  Light's truth, I would rather not.  But it must be done, and I give myself to the fight," she met Jaydena's eyes, "Use me."

She watched Dulcinea quickly and wondered what the story was behind this one, each Green had a different enternal reason for joining Green. For some it was the ability to flirt and the bond more than one man. Others it was that they had lost family or friends to the Blight or to the Shadow and wanted payback. Yet for more it was the power and the wanting to fight the Shadow and walk proudly down the Halls as a Battle Sister, defending the world, many of who did not know they were in danger. They would find out what Dulcinea Sedai was made of in the next few months and if her reasons were sound and just or petty and superficial. She remembered this girl well for the comments she had made about the Green and the punishment that had followed and it was a mightly shock that she had chosen their Ajah after the things she had thought about them. Picking up her green worry stone that she had found in the ground not far from the Tower she gazed up as the woman and waited for her to answer. The Reds wish to prevent another Breaking of the World."

With a nod and almost a smile she waited for her to continue, it was probably one of the best answers she had heard in her time as Ajah Head. Surprising that it came from the woman who had thought of them as nothing but a bunch of man grubbing fluff heads. Funny how the years, aging, and experiences changed them. She could only hope that her part in that long ago day had helped to turn Dulcinea into the Green she needed to be. "I do not know if that is possible, now.  The Blues and the Grays, they work with the nations to form alliances, to manipulate thrones.  For myself, I think the time for talking is past.  The nations will stand together for Tarmon Gai'don, or they will die alone." The woman paused quite eloquently and gazed at each of them in turn but she continued, they girl would have made an excellent Gray with that talent, "The Green is the Battle Ajah.  You stand ready for the Last Battle, and will fight the trolloc hordes when they come.  I do not think that wait will be long, now.  Every battle needs soldiers, and I think the Last Battle will require as many soldiers as we can find."

Jaydena waited for the girl to finish, preparing herself for what was to come, this one seemed strong and ready to face it but you never knew. "I am new yet, but I have been tested, and passed, as all Aes Sedai. But it must be done, and I give myself to the fight, use me." Jaydena looked deeply into the woman's eyes as she said Use me and then spoke.

"As you say Dulcinea you are new and yet untried. Yes you have taken the Oaths and passed the test but you have not yet felt your Warders blood running across your hands as you struggle to heal him. You have not watched hopelessly as your Sisters were cleaved in half by a Fade's blade, nor have you lived years never know when or where the next battle would take place or who would did in it. You of all people know how quickly one's opinions have change, when last I saw you, you had an entirely different view of this Ajah and it's purpose. As part of being a Sister of the Green you must know that you are denied access to the Ajah you have chose, for a time you will be know as a intiate of the Green. To the rest of the Tower you will appear as a full Green Sister but to the Greens you will not be so. You will live in a temporary quarters, take Battle Weaves classes to prepare you for fighting, you will learn what it is to be Green. No Sister will stand with a a untried Green at her backs, we need to be able to trust that our Sisters are tough and well trained. When your instructors deem you ready, you will have a night to consider your answers. You have given one of the best reasons for hearing the Greens that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and so I feel you will not need much thought on that. In the morning following your Midnight Vigil you will go before all the assembled Greens and find out your fate. You have no choice in this Dulcinea you are sealed to us now. Do you have any questions before you meet all the Sisters who are currently in the Tower?"

Dulcinea bowed her head.  What Jaydena said was all true, even without the Three Oaths Dulcinea knew that the Sitter spoke to the heart of her faults.  And deservedly so.  She had felt deep shame and embarrassment over that moment of gossip, laughing at another's expense.  And Jaydena had very firmly taught her otherwise.  Dulcinea thought that she had learned from those lessons, and indeed that glimpse into the Green Ajah is what had made the final decision for her last night.  She knew nothing of how the Blue worked, except they all worked as individuals.  She just didn't think herself smart enough, capable enough, for that life.  But was she any better suited to be a Green?  Perhaps not.  But Jaydena said that they would give her a chance to learn.  She supposed that was the best that she could hope for.  She would learn...if there was time.  Remembering everything she had seen, she just didn't believe there was.  A half-trained girl fighting in the Last Battle.  She shook her head slowly.  She really had no reasonable chance of survival.  But the Green Ajah was willing to offer her that slim chance.  A good soldier followed orders, and there was always need of more soldiers than generals.  Well, she could be a good soldier.

She steadied herself and raised her head, "I accept your judgement, Sitter.  I will learn whatever you care to teach me.  I will live, I will learn, I will fight, and if needed, I will die bound to the Green Ajah."

OOC: I wasn't sure what Lor could put in here, which is why I haven't said anything before now. Hope this helps move things along for you!?!

IC:

Loraine couldn't help but wonder what was going on in the girl's head. She'd accepted these things so blithly that there had to be an explosion coming. No tears, just blind acceptance? It simply didn't make sense. As controlled as she, herself, had been, there'd still been some level of shock. Guilty conscience, perhaps? Did she not feel worthy of being raised to begin with? Was it possible she'd been raised too quickly? These questions chased each other around in Lor's head until she forced her thoughts in other directions. She wasn't going to get these answers by sitting here. Nor was this the time to question the girl. It would all come out eventually.

Was it too much to hope that no one got hurt when it did?

When she finally spoke, Loraine took a moment to let the last of it hang, sending Jade a look out of the corner of her eye. "I accept your judgement, Sitter.  I will learn whatever you care to teach me.  I will live, I will learn, I will fight, and if needed, I will die bound to the Green Ajah."

"That you will," Loraine said softly. "I'm afraid it's too late to do aught else but die bound to these halls." She didn't think Dulcinea would give in that easily, though. Something about the slightly stubborn set of her chin said there was more to this new Aes Sedai than was visible.

Jaydena watched as the young woman hung her head and she feared that Dulcinea was going to cry. It had been years since she had seen someone cry over this but it was bound to happen at some point. However a deep look of shame came over the woman's face and was then quickly concealed. She watched as the girl put her shoulders back as though she was getting ready for battle. The woman raised her head and then began speaking,  "I accept your judgement, Sitter.  I will learn whatever you care to teach me.  I will live, I will learn, I will fight, and if needed, I will die bound to the Green Ajah." Jaydena nodded and waited to see if any of her Sitters would speak. A soft voice rolled out from in front of her, "That you will, I'm afraid it's too late to do aught else but die bound to these halls." Jaydena smiled at Loraine's apt response to the girl and then spoke, "Very well spoken Loraine Sedai. Dulcinea, as Loraine said, you are bound to us. You will either stay as an intiate until you can pass our tests or you will become a Sister. There is no going back, you don't get to switch Ajahs in the Tower. As far as I know it's never been done, at least not in my time. Well my dear, we need to talk you on your tour. Sitters you are dismissed." Jade nodded at each of the woman and then spoke to Dulcinea when they were alone. "I will be taking you on your rounds of the Green quarters where you will visit all the women in the Greens and be introduced to you, since you have no questions, we will go to your temporary quarters and get started." Jade motioned for the girl to leave her office and then quickly followed her...
