Hey, I read something on sword fighting back in the day and it talked about using basically a mental grid system in fighting with the sword. I was thinking this might be a really good substitution for the band instead of sword forms and would add structure to the sword training. For normal fighters the forms are a box system, and for those that are quicker but a bit more reckless the forms are a triangle system with. There's the 3 sets of boxes and triangles, 1 at the tip, one at the middle of the blade and one at the base. I can go try and track down the information if everyone thinks this would be a good substitution.

Well, this is honestly the first time i've heard of it, to be honest.

If it's not threatening to get confiusing and overly complicated, could you post a few examples so we can take a better look at it?

oh you know what, i think I remember where I read about the fighting style...I think it was in a star wars book on reconstructing the jedi and they were teaching lightsaber battles...I'll track it down and try and have it up.

The book you're looking for is I, Jedi by Michael A. Stackpole.  I'm in the process of rererererererere...rereading it.

well if you're re-reading it, you mind pulling the idea out of the book and fleshing it out? I don't really remember it because I think I was just skimming through it at the time.

There's not much to it, actually.  Pretty much, it describes three circles of defense, with four defensive poses for the outer and middle circle, and two for the inner circle.

While I have no problem with coming up with regimented ideas for training, I've always preferred to leave the door open for those who wish to develop their character's fighting style in a unique direction that fits with the character.  For example, a lot of my previous Bander's weapon training revolved around him learning the basics of different weapons and incorporating them into the formulation of his own unique style.
