[TV]Do Not Disturb Reviews

A chillingly bad laughtrack-happy sitcom about the staff of a Manhattan hotel from the “Arrested Development” team of writer-producer Abraham Higginbotham and director Jason Bateman, “Do Not Disturb” stars Niecy Nash (“Reno 911!”) and Jerry O’Connell (“Carpoolers”).

As unlikely as this sounds, it’s actually harder to watch than “Carpoolers,” 22 minutes of spazzy recycled pre-fab awful.

USA Today gives it a star and a half (out of four) and says:

… if you waste your time watching this flat dreck, you may never watch TV again. …

The Associated Press says:

… doesn't much bother being funny … far from the worst sitcom on the air. It's fast-paced, non-demanding, a suitable default mode as background noise while you're doing something else. …

The New York Times says:

… Will there already be a cancellation before the premiere of “Surviving Suburbia” on Nov. 2 makes the fall schedule complete? (I wouldn’t get too attached to “Do Not Disturb.”) …

The Los Angeles Times says:

… Overall, it's serviceable -- more Holiday Inn than the Four Seasons, but roach free and with no curious stains on the carpet. While there's nothing particularly wrong with "Do Not Disturb," neither is there anything so inspired as to make you leap to your feet, crying, "Yes! This is what television needs! More workplace comedies! More hotels!" …

The Chicago Tribune says:

Every fall, there's at least one. A program so bad that it's not only unpleasant to watch, but it makes you fear for the future of network television. This year, that show is a "comedy" called "Do Not Disturb." …

The Washington Post says:

… instead of opting for the trite title, Higginbotham should have looked harder for something more novel. He could have found one suitable title right there in his own dialogue: We're thinking, of course, of "Don't Let This Happen to You." …

The San Francisco Chronicle says:

… doesn't have one funny moment in the unbearable 22 minutes of its pilot …

The Boston Herald says:

There’s a dearth of mirth in Fox’s “Do Not Disturb.” You can almost hear the cockroaches snoring. … The show is so bad it makes this viewer long for “Carpoolers,” O’Connell’s sitcom bomb from last season. Fox can’t shutter this flophouse fast enough.

The Boston Globe says:

… Wow. Fox has outdone itself in the Bad and Self-Consciously Offensive Dept. Set at a New York hotel, starring Jerry O'Connell and the usually hysterical Niecy Nash from "Reno 911," this workplace sitcom is a mess of flat gender and racial gags. …

Variety says:

… hackneyed … fetid … Broad isn't automatically bad, of course, but broad and woefully unfunny are a pretty deadly combination. Whatever the underlying strategy, "Do Not Disturb" has the jumbled look and unsavory feel of an unmade motel bed.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… They say sitcoms are just one hit away from making a comeback to their previous glory. Maybe so, but Fox's "Do Not Disturb" isn't it. This is a show that could bury the genre altogether. …

9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Fox.
