I have begun giving the audio books a go, and have picked up on something I have always missed in tEotW.

 

Can Mistress Grinwell (Else's mother) channel?

 

We know Else can channel (IIRC quite strongly if she applied herself). We know channeling can be hereditary.

 

The part that gave me this idea was the way Rand felt when she was studying him. It was a description that I have seen similar versions of throughout the series. The way most men feel when someone who can channel is studying them. I know Mistress Grinwell is irrelevant to the story line, but could there be some sort of correlation between channeling and the way just looking at men makes them feel uncomfortable. Or is it just most of the women in the story can channel, so picking up on a far to common characteristic?

I may be totally wrong here, but if this is the point in the books I'm thinking of, I had the distinct impression she was 'studying' him closely because...well...he's a young, strapping lad.  In other words, I don't think she was looking for the same thing that the Aes Sedai are when they study Rand, if you catch my drift.

Yeah, but my point is the feeling behind the look, regardless of intent. They get from those who don't know about him (or that they can channel).

My personal opinion is that Rand, Mat, Perrin, Gawyn, Lan - all of the main men in the story have a wonderful knack for getting themselves into situations which generally tend to induce looks like that from women, hence making the men feel uncomfortable.

 

It's that 'little boy stands in the middle of the kitchen covered in mud with Dad's wing mirror in his hand' thing. He's always going to feel slightly uncomfortable when Mum walks in.

Just for info, Else Grinwell was sent away from the Tower not long after she arrived. We find that out in TDR...

 

Don't think we come across her again.

Actually, Else was eying Rand and I dont think the mother liked that. Maybe she was judging whether Rand was worthy enough for Else, or perhaps she was studying him to see if he looks like a lout who may run off with her in the night? ;)

Yeah,  I do agree with you all I just thought I'd share the little thing I noticed. And although Else was sent away after a short amount of time, I recall i think it was Suain who said that she could have become an Aes Sedai if she didn't spend so long looking at the younglings train.
