Compressed/zipped folders. Anyone know how to open them?

"Compressed (zipped) folder" is a term used by Windows XP, so I'm assuming that's what you're using.

1. Right-click the file. There should be an option for "Extract files" that opens a wizard for walking you through uncompressing the zipped files. You choose the folder ("directory") to put the files in, and out they come! If you don't see the "Extract" option, it's possible you'll have to right-click the file and choose "Open With" -> "Compressed (Zipped) Folders".

Or, use a free program designed to do much more with compressed files:

2. Go to www.7-zip.org and download 7-zip (the first link at the top middle, the ".exe" one for Windows 32-bit. Install it, and now you can right-click the file and have several new options under the "7-Zip" menu. The ones you'll likely use most often are "Extract files..." (which asks you where to put them) and "Extract here" (which puts the extracted files in the same folder the .ZIP file is in).

With 7-Zip you'll also be able to create compressed files (.zip files as well as its own even better .7z files).

Anyway, if you have any problems, let us know!

*headscratch* Well, it doesn't make sense to have a compressed folder with no files in it.

Perhaps it was compressed with a newer format than Windows is able to use (i.e., a recent version of WinZip, 7-Zip, or other program).

You'll probably need to download and use the free 7-Zip program to get the files out, then.
