Green Ajah Tournament: Jaydena vs Sirayn

Players: Sirayn and Jaydena

Plot: Jaydena and Sirayn fight each other using battle weaves in a green ajah tournie, Sirayn ends up winning the battle…

: : : : The thought pursued her with a disquieting persistence as she approached the tourney field that this was an unrivalled opportunity to make a spectacular fool of herself in front of an audience. The memory of those observers laughing while Sasra showed her precisely how useless she was without a left hand still haunted her, but it would be far worse with other Green Sisters, holding a string of successes as long as her arm and eager to seek out and remember anything that might gain them the upper hand; and just in case that hadn’t been daunting enough, Lanfir Leah Marithsen would be watching. A rare chance to be beaten in front of everyone most likely to retain that impression.

: : : : Laughter and chatter greeted her when she stepped out onto the field; a warm breeze plucked at bright banners setting them to rippling; green silk, curious onlookers, anticipation. It was hot with the sun burning above in a clear pale sky and she was grateful that she had not brought armour. She fixed her eyes straight ahead, focused on closing out the tension and the heat. The once pitted field had been smoothed out and made even for this day’s event, but ingrained habit made her watch her step closely, knowing how treacherous the scarred ground often was. Coming to the middle of the field Sirayn paused and stood waiting for her adversary to approach.

: : : : Jaydena looked as stunning as ever; beautiful, confident, and deadly. She felt her own inadequacy all the more keenly beside this vision of what a Green Sister should be like. She was plain, where the other woman had the classic beauty that stopped people in their tracks; tiny and fragile, where her friend was tall and strong; sombre, where the other sister drew people to her with her warmth; awkward, graceless to others, where Jaydena had the effortless social skills that her position as Sitter demanded. Not to mention the unfortunate fact that she was crippled and no matter how hard she worked to learn the same skills all over again, wrong handed, she still missed her left hand keenly. It had all the traits of an easy victory for Jaydena.

: : : : She checked her weapons one last time, a soldier’s habit, knife and sword. Both were present, much good might it do her; it was unfortunate that offensive weaves were outlawed, for that was the one place in which she might have held the edge. Composing herself, she held her head high, and watched stonily as Jaydena came to stand with her. Lanfir spoke a few ritual words of blessing and amid a scattering of cheers and shouts of encouragement the spar began.

: : : : For one frantic instant Sirayn had no idea what to do. No weaves sprang to mind; her hopeless affection for the other woman rebelled at drawing steel on her. The sword came quick enough to her hand once Jaydena cut at her and she turned the blow aside deftly blessing the practice she had put in. She gave ground easily, turning, to protect her blind side which was difficult to defend while her mind scrambled for ideas. Remembering … a moment not so long ago, lying torn and grieving in the mud, and a cold ring pressed into her hand; her resolve firmed; further back, and the two of them sat together where they thought she couldn’t see, laughing together, secure in their own affection.

: : : : And that unlocked something in her. Now she wanted not just to defend herself but to *hurt* in revenge for her jealousy and anger, as though that hurting could make up for moments spoilt and time spent miserable. She embraced saidar. An instant of precise, delicate weaving. The air exploded in a harsh and deafening clangour which thundered through her head even though the most part of it had been directed at Jaydena; watching like an eagle she caught the flicker of pain across her friend’s expression, savoured it, in some twisted way. She smiled: cold and inviting. Let her come.

Jaydena steeled herself and stepped out onto the field, her thoughts in deep turmoil. Her chest heaved beneath the vest she wore, her legs trembled as she worked to control the depair that has become much like her best friend. A book worn with time, used time and time again, it's pages yet to reveal on it's mystery's. Her boots hit the ground softly as she walked toward the middle. She had come fresh from the Warders yard, fresh from practicing with her staffs. Today she looked far different than the Tower normally saw her, it was only those who practised inthe field who saw her like this. Her long, wavy, and thick auburn hair was hooked up on her head, hairpins shaped like swords with dragons hanging from them secured the often unruly hair. She wore tight black britches, form fitting that showed her curves but allowed her ease of movement, no bulky flapping fabrics would work when fighting. She wore a white lace up shirt underneath a green satin vest. Matching green boots were on her feet and went up to her knees. She wore a marriage dagger at her throat, though no one would notice it but her opponent and she was the one sister who knew who the dagger belonged too or rather who it had belonged too.

She couldn't fight her best friend, yet she had no choice, she was powerless and this was not a pleasant nor normal feeling for her to have. As a Sitter for so long she was used to being able to control those around her or at least ease them in the direction the ajah wanted. The fact that she could loss to her friend didn't make her feel any better. Sirayn was in no way weak, in fact she was far weaker than her friend, so weak that if everyone knew they would shun her and throw her from the Tower. Her friend was a rock, she showed no emotions, she was the smarter and braver of them. Looking toward the spot when Sirayn stood she swallowed back her fears and desires, tucked her love for the woman deep inside and assumed the Aes Sedai serenity she has perfected long ago. Striding out onto the field she nodded to the Sisters in the stand and her gaidin who looked on from the sidelines. She could feel their pride surging through the bond and she smiled and walked to stand in front of Sirayn.

Jade reached down and checked her weapons, she wore special sheaths on each hip, one which contained the two special short staffs she used. Black staffs that green dragons wound around, the sheaths were done in black and green leather and matched the staffs. On her other hip she wore a dagger with dragons on the hilt another gift from Seia. She smiled and bowed her head softly to her friend. Moving into the fighting stance she waited on the defensive for Sirayn to attack. Several moments passed in which she waited for Sirayn to attack, it didn't appear that Sirayn was going to so Jade struck out with one of her staffs, embracing the source as Sirayn came back with her sword. The weaves that her friend wove exploded around her head and she winced in pain at the loud noises. She saw the anger flitting across her friends face and she knew that they were just going to take it easy, Sirayn had alot to hate her for and this was her chance to do something about it. Jade wove quickly, using her Talent of Delving she reached into the earth and felt where the cracks were in the earth beneath them and split the ground out in front of Sirayn's feet, just as quickly she wove again, using her talent she sensed the water and began pulling water from the ground and filling the hole with waist deep water. She used air to churn the water and grinned down at her friend who stood in waist deep mud. Jade built a shield around herself for a moment and backed away from the hole...

: : : : A bare whisper of warning under her feet. She tensed, but too late. The earth beneath her cracked with a shuddering thunder that put her heart straight into her throat; she tensed to spring, but even in that blinding half second the ground yielded into slick treachery. Biting back a curse she floundered searching for a trace of solid ground beneath the weight of glutinous mud. Herself skilled in this element, chagrin stung her at having it turned against her so easily. She took a steadying breath, hating the cold grip about her, stamped on the feeling of being trapped. She struck; a delicate lace sheeted through the mire, hardened it beneath her, careful not to simply encase herself in dry dirt. Threads of fire. Steam rose faintly from the sludge. Then composing herself, she took a firm step, hid her relief as her foot landed upon a series of broad steps and thus to solid ground once more.

: : : : Lifting her sword, she circled warily, wearing a stony composure as she watched her opponent turn also to keep her in sight. Her move next. She contemplated the balance briefly. Having spent her years as Sitter inside the Tower it would not surprise her if Jaydena was slowed, out of practice, lacking the keen edge of reflex which she herself depended on; but that in turn was weighed out by the difference in their training, hers almost solely to offence, Jaydena in many skills reflecting her greater strength. It boded badly that she could not even form the shielding weave which was one of the ways to end this duel. A quick flash of memory gripped her; Jaydena possessed angreal, if she did not miss her mark completely. Had the other woman brought hers? Had the pressures of a diplomat’s life softened her fighting skills? Too many questions and but one way to answer them.

: : : : She lashed out with barely restrained ferocity. Her sword split the air with a keening whine to crash against a locked brace of the Sitter’s staffs. Silver threads of spirit stole between them seeking to cut away that shield. She clamped the other woman’s wrist in her own iron grip, wrenched it down and sideways to throw her off balance, brought the hilt of her sword down hard. It skidded off a hastily flung up shield with a torturous screech. Jaydena came back quick as thought with a burst of blinding colour so that she stumbled back swearing; she had enough presence of mind to drop straight to the ground, feeling the wash of air against her outstretched hand as a staff passed over her, and twisted viciously slamming her foot into the Banner Captain’s stomach. A tell tale gasp confirmed her blow.

: : : : But she had been reckless; even recovering her breath Jaydena was not likely to let her regain her feet again. This would be a telling time if the other woman possessed an angreal. As the searing haze faded from her vision, she scrambled out of reach, deft as a spider. She half straightened, lifting her sword above her head in defence but a shattering blow met it: the blade sprang from her hand, skittered across the parched ground, to wind up still spinning at Lanfir’s feet. Jaydena had backed off some way. Her hand stung furiously. She shook it, trying not to swear in front of the observers, and rose to her feet. A glance at the sword proved it was well and truly out of reach. She lifted a hand to her wrist, remembering with a brief and bitter humour the days in which it had been her good left hand instead of this weak substitute, and drew out a dagger. The scrape of steel echoed softly across the ground in the gathering silence.

ooc: I did a whole lot of NPCing there. Feel free to do the same to me in revenge, I mean return. Take first blood?

Jaydena watched her opponet as Sirayn wove and Jade could see the mud begin to harden in several spots, steam began to rise from the mud as fire was applied. Jade chuckled as Sirayn walked up a set of steps in the hole, Sirayn was a smart woman and canny. Jade closed the hole behind Sirayn with a quick hand and used her talent to make the cracks in the ground were filled in to ensure their footing. Sirayn began to circle her and she moved with her, she had been fighting for many years, had maintained her strength and worked out everyday, despite the conditions. The Green came after her with anger still spitting from her eyes, her sword slammed toward her and Jaydena brought her staffs up in the defensive position, threads of spirit began to attack her shield, Sirayn grabbed onto her wrist and began to pull her down, Jade began to lose her balance and just barely was able to throw a shield up against the sword aimed at her. Jade regained her footing and moved into a complex form that played onher strength and height. Sirayn ducked under her staff and kicked out, the breath whooshed out of her stomach but that was the only reaction she showed. Jaydena glided toward the Sister as Sirayn tried to regain her feet, she lashed out, her arms shaking with the force of the blow to Sirayn's upraised sword, the blade flew out of Sirayn's hand and skidded across the ground to wear the Amyrlin stood.

Jade backed up as to give Sirayn a small amount of room, she saw the woman glancing at her sword as she judged the distance. A few moments passed as Sirayn looked at her sword, finally the woman pulled a dagger from it's sheath. Jade followed suit and sheathed her staffs, she pulled her dagger out and advanced toward the woman, as she came closer she began to attack, at the same time weaving a complex set of threads. She used her talent to pull the water from the earth, just as quickly as it began to gurgle from the earth, she used the combined strengh of the ring she wore to pull even more water up. Using Air she froze the water under just Sirayn's feet and slashed out with her dagger, the blade glanced off Sirayn's should, and blood began to well from the wound. The Sister dropped to her knees on the slick ice and showed no outward signs of her injury. Jaydena averted her eyes from the sight of Sirayn's blood and moved in for the next attack. Her dagger slashed out once more but Sirayn gained her feet and moved off of the ice. Applying fire to the ice she melted it as she fought off Sirayn's blows...

: : : : The scrape of steel as the other woman pulled out a dagger caused her brows to raise slightly. It seemed unwise for Jaydena to give up an advantage in reach and number for a weapon of similar size to her own, but perhaps the Banner Captain was just that confident of her triumph. She slid sideways to present a narrow profile to the opponent, watching warily. Jaydena was quick off the mark: advancing swiftly she flung a weave and icy water pooled about her feet. She had already been a victim of trickery before, but even as she tried to take a step the water froze rooting her in place. She stumbled, twisted to avoid the seeking edge of the dagger, but the point cut through her shirt and sliced a cold line across her shoulder. A small hiss of pain, cursing herself even as she did so, and dropped to one knee summoning fire to melt herself free. The rest of the ice slithered and sizzled to steam.

: : : : A hot finger of blood inched down her arm under her garb. She shifted her shoulder cautiously, winced at the pain, but it was a shallow gash at most and would barely need healing. Lucky for her that it was on her left shoulder and would not impair her movement. She cast a measuring glance over the other woman, judged her fatigue, her remaining strength … and her eyes caught on a ring glittering harmless in the sunshine. She recognised it. An angreal? Jaydena had brought an angreal to this spar? Caught between amusement and disgust she pushed her anger into violence, slammed her dagger into the Sitter’s block, exerting force to hold the blade trapped. She pivoted: ice rimed boots sliding easily over the dry earth. Hooked a foot behind the other woman’s leg, twisted to put pressure on the vulnerable joint, forced Jaydena to her knees. The other dagger worked from her grasp and sliced deep into her palm. She clamped her spare fingers over it, ignoring the red bite of metal, held it pinned for just one moment …

: : : : Couldn’t shield: she was at a marked disadvantage there. It was rather fortunate that it wasn’t necessary to use that weave to win the match. Her stump had been pretty useless so far, but as the Sitter began to struggle out of her grasp, she used it to good effect: slammed a vicious elbow into the other woman’s temple causing her to slump slightly. It was all the opening she needed. Snatching her dagger free she put her knee on the knife wrist and exerted all her weight to hold it steady. Then she placed the blade point lightly at the Banner Captain’s throat. Her voice was perfectly even and calm: “Do you yield?”

Jaydena saw Sirayn's eyes dart to her hand followed by several emotions, the woman had seen the water based angreal that she wore on her hand. Sirayn pivoted before her and Jade tried to move away as Sira hooked a boot behing her knee, her dagger cut into Sirayn's hand as she fell to her knees under the force of Sirayn's leg. She managed to gain access to one of her legs and struggled to gain her feet, she didn't see the elbow coming that landed hard against her sensative temple. Lights flashed in front of her eyes, and she winced softly against the pain, Sirayn wrenched the dagger from her grip and she knew then that she had let her strength and talents lull her into over confidence. The other hand Sirayn put her weight on with her knee and Jade felt the cruel sting of defeat as the cold hard steel was placed at her throat. Jaydena almost groaned at the truimph she saw in Sirayn's eyes, she would never live this down, this loss of a Sitter to a Sister, she was supposed to be one of the strongest and she had lost to Sirayn. “Do you yield?”

Jade gulped wanting to end it all by surging forward into the blade, after all what did she have to live for anymore. Her love, her wife in all purposes was gone and she was all alone, left with only memories and pain. She pushed the anger down and wondered if Sirayn felt the desire to kill her after all they had been through. Careful of the blade tip she spoke, "I yield." She felt the dagger tip leave her throat and saw Sirayn reach down to help her off the ground, Jade took the offered hand and gained her feet. Sheating her daggers she nodded to Sirayn and took something off the ground she had brought with her. She handed to matching dagger to her own to Sirayn and spoke softly, "You beat me Sirayn, I am proud to call you a battle sister, though I can't say I am happy about losing." She glanced down at the dagger and spoke, "This is for your win, I am sure that had she been able to she would have given you one as well." Limping away she made her way off of the field...

: : : : For one timeless moment she knelt, poised, her friend pinioned beneath her, ice cold steel steady at her throat. Treacherous emotions seethed behind stony calm. A part of her revelled in her triumph, wanted to shout it to the skies, the one pitiful place in which she had been at least equal for a short while. The most part was simply glad to have escaped a humbling that seemed inevitable in front of so many. Deny it though she might, she found herself concerned for whether the Sitter was all right, though she had barely scratched the woman. She herself was worse off; each careful shift of her shoulder brought a fresh wave of pain, and her grip was slick with blood from a gashed palm. But even after this explosion of old rancour anger and resentment and an ingrained sense of impotence still burned within her. It left a bitter taste in her mouth … but she still felt so much *less* than Jaydena that it twisted something in her even to be pretending that she had won.

: : : : She drew back the knife from that delicate throat, got to her feet, careful, mechanic. A loss in all but name. The thought quirked some dark irony within her. She cleaned the dagger carelessly on a handful of sparse grass, thrust it back into its sheath, cursing under her breath to see blood still drip from her cut hand. Started to brush down her dusty garb with a bloody hand, stopped, sensing its futility. Finally raised her eyes to the other woman. Slightly ruffled, perhaps stinging from the defeat, Jaydena looked even more beautiful with strands of her auburn hair falling down and fire in her jade gaze. She looked away with an ache in her throat of inadequacy, of a dream that could never be fulfilled.

: : : : The Sitter held something out. She raised her red slicked hand to it … saw it … stopped. A dagger matched to the one still worn. She stared at it, glossy steel, sleek and deadly, waiting in the bright sunlight; couldn’t think what message lay behind the gift. A veiled threat, warning not to mess with her again? An attempt to gain back whatever standing she had lost? She took it, almost by instinct, turned it over in cold fingers. A simple dagger. So much meaning lost on her. This was why Jaydena was the Sitter and not her. Perhaps it was meant to mark her as a pet, showered with gifts and praise when obedient, scorned when not. That idea stung her battered pride, yet in its aptness, it infused her with a certain dark amusement. “Thank you, Banner Captain.” She raised one brow in slight irony, determined to be well behaved with so many onlookers, and looked toward her discarded sword wondering how to recover it without having to encounter Lanfir.

: : : : One last parting shot. Her head came up at the words with a speed and startlement unbecoming of an Aes Sedai: wariness, a dawning anger in her expression. Moments only. She got that under control before it could develop into genuine fury. Seiaman would have given her a dagger! She wanted to snarl after Jaydena that Seiaman had never seen fit to give her so much as her loyalty, which should have been certain between them; that all the love and affection had gone one way in their bond; but that was too deep a secret to be shared so openly. How people would laugh if they ever knew the truth. That Seiaman Gaidin, outwardly as devoted a Warder as ever lived, had preferred another Green Sister above her own bondmate.

: : : : She curled her hand round the dagger, sudden, savage, feeling red pain as it bit into the already open gash in her palm. Then she opened her hand carefully and slipped the knife through her belt, recovering her precarious control. The next person to mention Seiaman to her again would find out precisely how well recovered she was from that loss. “A match well fought.” The words were cool, unfeeling; the response of ritual; edged with a certain ice. “If that is all?” Scarcely waiting for a reply Sirayn slipped off toward her scattered sword and the inexorable approach of the second round.
