Laurel Crown: The Hornet's Nest (Act 3)

http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/topic,22386.0.html

Background: King of Illian has died several months ago and was succeeded by his only daughter. Ja’varan saw an opportunity to stir trouble and replaced the Princess. Darkfriends within the companions took the Princess away to be killed but they were spotted. Loyal Companions freed her and she was spirited away into hiding.

While a quiet hunt for the Princess was launched, Ja’varan started to change things in Illian. A good deal of the older Companions who may have had ties to those who freed the Princess were imprisoned beneath the palace of the Council of Nine, the story being that they attempted to supplant the Queen. A good deal of Darkfriends are brought in to fill the ranks. Both the Council of Nine and the Assemblage fall into line with the new Queen’s plans with suspicious speed.

People are being forced to join a new army that is being raised as well as mercaneries being hired. This presents a risk to Tear which is under the Dragon’s control which would bring Black Tower interest to bear (as well as the Band due to the military force).

The influx of mercaneries as well as the forcing of many men into service has led to much greater lawlessness in the streets and in the Perfumed Quarter. So bad has it become that a militia has been formed on the docks by those who live there to keep the peace as best they can. They are increasingly clashing with authorities from the city who are taking a more active interest in the Perfumed Quarter now due to the reinforcements that are arriving by ship as well as the privateers they are hiring on.

By the current time, the Queen has amassed a sizeable force which is continuing to grow for both land and sea. The Princess is still in hiding, Black Tower with the Band have started spying and the Militia’s relations with authorities is growing quite tense.

Act 1 Background: The Black Tower and Band have been investigating the city and feeling that things are amiss are beginning to look for allies within the city. Not only for information, but because they also feel that war with Illian will be inevitable.

Act 1: Representatives from the Black Tower and Band go to visit the leader of the militia, Con Stavros. During the talks, the Princess reveals herself (she has been hiding with the militia for sometime). Princess reveals the pretender to be Ja’varan (due to Ja’varan doing the whole Villain’s exposition thing), plans are made.

Act 2 Background: Black Tower promises a substantial cadre of Asha’man and Dedicated to help counteract Ja’varan and any followers she may have. Band of the Red Hand likewise pledges a substantial force to help retake the city. In return, the Princess promises Illian’s allegiance to the Dragon.

The plan is to take the Council of Nine’s palace in the morning before the sun rises through stealth. Free the Nine Lord’s from their compulsion, free and arm the imprisoned Companions. When the first light comes, assault the Royal Palace.

Act 2: Taking of the Council Palace. A small group of the Band and Asha’man accompany the militia to the Palace where they are let in by sympathisers. Quietly taking down what opposition they find, find the Council in session. They are hostile at first till the Asha’man slash the compulsion weaves resting upon them. They side with the Princess to a man, Companions are freed and they start arming up using the armoury in the Palace.

Act 3: Attack begins at dawn, as they charge across the Square of Tammuz they are ambushed by the Queen/Ja’varan’s forces (Companion darkfriends, mercaneries, levies). Backing them are the Queen with a few of her channeling followers at the Royal Palace steps. The Princess’ forces drive towards the Queen and the Asha’man with a clear shot unleash their combined powers which, up to that point, have mainly been defensive. The sheer amount of power used annihilates Ja’varan and her cadre. Tide turns in favour of the Princess’ forces.

Epilogue: Word spreads of the Queen being killed and shortly after of the Council of Nine declaring the last queen to be a pretender and that they recognise the true Queen now. Disorder in the city and in the armies outside for several days, but with the help of the Band, Asha’man and Militia with the Companions that are loyal, order is eventually restored.

Royal Palace was wrecked, government is reconstituted. Queen rules with the nine supporting her (all nine owe her their freedom, plus the realisation they are now with the Dragon with Tarmon Gaidon looming helps put aside the worst squabbling). The Assemblage can now no longer use the Council and the Royalty against one another so their ability to interfere with decision making is muted.

The forces raised by Ja’varan that survived the infighting during the disorder are reconstituted as part of the Legion of the Dragon. The Companions remain Illianer. Militia are named the Protectors and are charged with the safeguard of the Perfumed Quarter. Queen swears with the Dragon and pledges her nation and whatever else is needed for the Final Battle.
