  1. I watched the first ... 3 seasons, I think, of game of thrones. I read the first few books as well. I think perverts of all kinds are a little (hopefully a whole lot, but maybe I'm too kind) over-represented in the show and in the books. They seem to enjoy causing suffering to others and a decadent life for themselves. Morality and good intentions, even some degree of it, causes them to die horrible deaths in that story. In any case, it doesn't make me enjoy the story as much as if there'd been some little hope for humanity, or for the reader to have something decent to cling to when reading. The occasional boob would have been acceptable, though.

Wheel of time certainly have some horrible things happening, and the good guys (there are such in WoT) usually make it out alive. Some die, of course. They would be reborn in the endless wheel (they or the same soul, at least), so maybe that's a glimmer of hope. I don't feel that WoT makes it out as a pleasure to read about the specifics of each horrific event that happens, but that's me and maybe others feel differently.

  2. I don't think they usually say how many seasons they'll make. I think they renew one season at a time. If they don't make a profit during the first 1 or 2 seasons, they'll probably cancel it. Or close to a profit, at least. They might reckon they'll sell enough DVDs and blue-rays in the long run if they just miss the revenues required for a profit. Or maybe they'll cancel it anyway if the reviews aren't great, so they can concentrate on introducing a new series. They seem to cancel a whole lot of shows nowadays after just 1 or 2 season. They are probably looking for the next big hit series, and cancel many way too soon because of that. Too bad.

I'm not sure Peter Jackson would be available. He seems to make movies with very big budgets. I don't know what the budget could be per season for WoT. Maybe something like 50-100 million dollars? Just a guess, so I could be way off...

It would be interesting to know how they select actors for different roles. I would guess some of the villains would require great acting skills, so there might be some more or less known names there. The major good guys would have a lot of spotlight too, so maybe they want good actors there too, but they'd be young, so maybe the pay-checks would be less (per working hour at least). Less known names among the young ones, I would guess. If there are known names, then it seems to me they usually pick actors that have had similar roles before. A former villain plays villain again, and so on.

  3. I'm waiting more or less impatiently too, but I expect they won't go public until they have something else to go public with as well. Such as someone who's been cast, or something like that. So it could probably take a while. They might be in negotiations with how many episodes there'll be, what the budget will be in exact terms, and similar. That's what I would guess, but I know very little of such a process. I don't know about standard procedures for such things, and if you don't know about that, then it's probably unlikely you can guess what to expect.

  4. Well, in the real world the worst evildoers of them all don't usually (if ever) do anything magnificiently good the next day or the next decade. I don't recall right now any instance from GoT where that happened, but that would be very unrealistic. Yeah, I know it's fantasy, but it's still humans in the story, so.

I think avengers had the scarlet witch do some things where we saw some special effects that were scarlet in appearence. I'm thinking  similar for depicting a weave, but with a weave of different colors. If viewed from a non-channelers perspective, we wouldn't see the weave, but the effect.

  5. I think most characters in GoT are very black, not gray at all, so we disagree on that. Evil and/or self-serving in most cases. Maybe there are a few examples that aren't black, but still. There's also a lot of rape, murder, torture, and what have you. There's whore-houses and whores and incest and depravity of all kinds.

WoT does have some nudity, but mostly not too depraved. I think they must step very carefully on how they handle nudity, so they don't make it all about entertainment value. Cultural differences do exist in some regards - multiple wifes (as it is for Rand), decent clothing, and so on. It's been that way in the real world as well, but the religions that we have now have an extremely different view on how one should cover oneself. Especially women are expected to cover themselves nowadays. Although celebrities in the western world seem to have taken steps away from that principle.

Sniffing, braid-tugging, and some other things would probably be cheesy on TV (if it happens regularly, anyway). They can probably have a Nynaeve that expresses her obstinancy other ways.

They will need great special effects for channeling, otherwise it might look cheesy. But there have been lots of shows and movies with magic and/or superpowers, so they could probably make it work somehow, I believe.

  6. Well, he's 67-68 or something like that, I think, he has taken 6-7 years to finish a book (doesn't help much that he never gets any younger and fresher), he weighs maybe 50 percent more than he should, and most people have retired by 70. If his weight is any indicator, then he probably won't be as healthy as most 75 year olds when he's 75. He probably doesn't need to earn any more money than he already has.

And GoT has been subject to criticism for the way they expose women as flesh items. They probably should have more of it, though.

  7. George RR Martin is too old to finish his own series. He's also too cynical in his approach to making a story, and the ones who make game of thrones are in trouble because of their sexism and so on. Wheel of time is very different from game of thrones. I really hope we won't get anything like that. Wheel of time isn't just about sex, drugs and violence (with some cynical side-notes on how power corrupts).

  8. I don't think you can cut out Aviendha or Elayne. They're pretty important. Maybe they could cut out parts of the story where they occur, or possibly change them, but not cut them out completely. Out of Rand's women, only one I think they can cut out is Min. she is not a channeler, and maybe not so important a warrior or player otherwise that it would be exceedingly difficult to make do without her.

Siuan is the amyrlin, and there needs to be one of those. Maybe they could make do without her love interests, though.

I believe seanchan is probably important, and the relationship Mat/Tuon could make some comic relief. Some things could probably be cut, though.

Ogiers are probably not absolutely essential in a TV series. The seanchan type weird animals would probably be great on screen if they can make proper special efffects for them. Would be exotic and all that. Creates an extra sense of threat, and enables the seanchan to launch their attacks.

I think they should keep the black ajah.

Egwene may not be absolutely necessary, if they must cut characters. Someone must be amyrlin in any case.

Fain, battles, ta'veren are probably pretty essential for the story. Mat is needed, Perrin slightly less so. I guess it depends on how many actors they can involve in the production.

I'd guess adjusting the story is more difficult the more characters they cut out.

  9. Dexterity is mainly discussed when men and women are compared. I don't think Cadsuane is entirely truthful, and I think she's a lot harsher than she needs to be, most of the time. That's how I would read it. But Nynaeve probably has a lot of weaknesses, just like I would think most of them have.

As for One power duels, strength and training are probably the two most important things. Dexterity is probably less important then, given the outcome of various duels and fights.

  10. Everybody deny they are (in the D & D board), but ... Durinax, for instance, voted like a true conservative in the viable/desirable thread ... Not ...

I'll probably get the first book of SoT tomorrow. The package had been sent a couple of days ago. I ordered some other books, too, so it wasn't just because I was curious about SoT. Seems like Goodkind did sell a lot of books, not that that has any direct relationship with how anyone in particular might enjoy reading them. Recommendations are ... what do you say in english? "Hit and miss"? When one can not tell based on the premise of the recommendation.

His comment about RJ's heart problems does seem very thoughtless and ill-considered. I can see why RJ might have taken offense. I probably would have, too. Hopefully it wasn't as ill intended as it came out ...

  11. I'm kind of fond of those Ajahs. But all things change as the Wheel turns, I guess. If Asha'man and Aes Sedai merge, then there's probably a chance that the men will adopt the concept. I wonder how much of their future we will see written? Maybe we won't know for sure how that goes?

  12. Only 6 are stronger than Nynaeve. I would guess that Cyndane, Alivia, Graendal, Sharina, and Semirhage are 5 of those 6. Yes, I know Brandon Sanderson said he was "pretty sure" that Semirhage was weaker, but I think she might still be one of the 6.

Moghedien is not one of the 6, and I doubt Mesaana is either. Maybe Lanfear is one, but she's actually Cyndane.
