Mashiara Sedai, Appreciate the well written summary analysis of “The Old Tongue”. As a Jack of Linguistics, and a Historian, I enjoy the talent Robert Jordan demonstrates in his purpose behind the “Old Tongue”, and my opine is that a large part of that purpose and the core truth is his understanding that a well designed language is not overcome with too many words, but with fewer words that have layers and depths of meaning that are by nature designed to convey their meaning to every recipient at their level of comprehension. The deceptiveness inherent to modern languages is that it seeks to create a rigid containment of meaning, regardless of pretending otherwise, and it is precisely why we see the increasing volume of words in today’s languages and a difficulty with proffering the clarity to recipients, in other words, the recipient seldom obtains the fullness of that which we wish to convey, and violates the message because it is forced into a rigid containment of meaning. Jordan has conveyed, in my opinion, that all is not what it seems and there are deeper layers that come only with time and understanding. Furthermore, his excellent character development demonstrates that we are all on a journey of knowledge, because it is a journey not a destination. I am presently on my third reading of the book series. The tv series loses much and corrupts the beauty behind his and Brandon Sanderson’s books. I am enjoying it more as a poor imitation and different story, and removing Suian was an amputation removing a beautiful part of Jordan’s story. I hope you find this at least interesting, preferably educational for finding depth most people miss when reading, and that as a recipient you enjoy more deeply what you read and know that future readings of the same material are always better because you know it’s a journey.
