Some LoD questions...
In chapter 26 Connecting Lines, Rand is talking to Elenia (trying to discover if he's related to Elayne I think) and she starts rambling about rulers who tried to be High King/Queen after Hawkwind and mentions an Esmara Getares who "gained considerable ground before she tried to conquer Andor and spent the last 12 years of her life as a guest of Queen Telaisien. Esmara was assassinated in the end, though there is no record of why anyone would want her dead once Telaisien broke her power."
I was just wondering if there's any possible significance to this? I get very suspicious when RJ includes seemingly throw-away bits of information that don't appear to be of relevence...
In chapter 31 Red Wax, Asunawa is talking to Saren, a questioner who led Morgase past the hangings of Paitr and his uncle who were planning to help her. Saren says that "I'm told they were chanting some catechism to the Shadow when Trom broke down the door."
Now isn't Trom one of Galad's friends who we meet in KoD (I think)? If so then I take it he's fairly trustworthy so does that mean these two really were Darkfriends? Also I seem to remember one of the Darkfriends Rand and Mat meet in EotW being called Paitr? Are they the same person?
-
That's a good point about Perrin. Hmmm maybe something to do with Lews Therin then?
-
In EotW, chapter "The web tightens", page 613 (Orbit paperback, 2002), when Rand is standing before Morgase and Elaida, the Aes Sedai says:
"What chance this?" She said. "Today the unbeliever is brought into Caemlyn"Why did she call Logain "the unbeliever"? I don't think it appeared anywhere else in the books...
That's something I noticed. Put it down to early bookism.
-
Perrin might have been mentioned like a few paragraphs before, but Rand had been talking quite a bit after this before the colours struck. Maybe there was a severe delayed reaction when the colours first started? Suppose that's the most likely explanation.
-
Ok so it's chapter 18 As the Plow breaks the Earth. Rand's telling Berelain he'll give her any assurances she wants then he cuts off and we get:
Colours swirled so strongly in his head that his tongue froze. Lews Therin cackled. -
Well the colours were described as "swirling" just as they are when the boys see each other, that's what really caught my attention. I will provide a quote but the book's upstairs and I'm too lazy to go get it until I need to go up for something else :p
-
Hmmm came across something strange in...CoS I think it was. Now I know the three lads get swirling colours when they think of each other, but in CoS (I think, it's on page 360 in my copy anyway) there's a mention of it when Rand's talking to Berelain and he's not thinking about either Mat or Perrin. Then in the next book there are at least two references to Rand seeing colours when neither of the other boys have been mentioned. One time he was thinking about Lews Therin. So any ideas what this is all about?

When/where/how does Verin learn travelling?
Cadsuane taught her (along with everyone else) on the trip to Far Madding.
I think she was just going through a sulky rebelious teen phase to be honest. I never really got the sudden animosity between the two in TDR, always seemed a bit forced and silly. I think it was just to show Egwene was becoming her own woman and losing some of her respect for Nynaeve.
I agree completely, except I don't think it's silly at all. That's what everyone does, it's just part of growing up. And - Nynaeve couldn't be allowed to continue treating her as a child forever. Their relationship had to evolve in a different direction
The reason I say it was silly is because of how suddenly it came about. I mean most people start acting that way at like 13 then slowly build up until about 18 before calming down a bit. Whereas with Egwene it all seemed to happen suddenly at 18 and it was just confined to Nynaeve. I dunno maybe her time as a damane had something to do with it.
-
Thanks Terez. Im not sure why i thought they were the herons but that didnt make sense for several reasons
Continnuin my TDR re-read. Theres a point while on the drifter that Elayne agrees with something Nynaeve says and Egwene essentially thinks " elayne agrees with Nynaeve too much.' and then goes on to admit that its usually when Nyn is right. When did Egwene adopt this attitude here? Did she and nyn disagree on a point i missed.

I only brought up real life women to illustrate that RJ's female characters aren't completely unrealistic with their man-bashing as some seem to believe. Sheesh I'm sorry I said anything...
-
I have to say I find it rather amusing when people complain about how WoT women moan about men and consider them inferior. Makes me think: what sort of women do you know in real life?! In my experience, if you get a group of women together they will nearly always moan about men at some point in the conversation (I'm sure the same applies in reverse), and women do generally consider men to be less sophisticated/emotionally developed/evolved/complex. Mind you, maybe in the real world we don't voice these opinions quite so often in front of men as the WoT females do.
The vast majority of women I know don't view men as inferior or consider men to be "less sophisticated/emotionally developed/evolved/complex" in any kind of way; nor do the men think such things of the women. It just doesn't seem to be conducive to living a fufilling existence.
Hmm, I was just thinking that implying women actually believe these things is a bit strong. They are common themes when women joke/comment about men, but I suppose a lot of it is simply habit and not always a reflection on their true opinions. And that is where real women maybe differ from WoT women, as the latter often seem to truely believe men are all idiots.
By the way just to explain my comments a bit:
Less sophisticated/evolved - When women pretend to act like men it usually involves burping, scratching etc. Women complain about how messy men can be.
Less emotionally developed/complex - Women complain that men never listen or understand their emotional needs and say they're only interested in one thing.
Of course, these are stereo-types, but things generally become that way for a reason.
Oh, and you hear a lot of women call men wimps and say they don't know what real pain is because they don't go through child birth.

I tried to bend the Pattern to my will once.
I actually do that quite a bit, but not deliberately and it's creepy. One of the oddest examples: I was thinking about how cuddly ducklings look and a whole family of ducks walked out in front of my car in the drive through of a MacDonalds, which wasn't even near any body of water.

Amathera spent few days working as a servant in the inn where Juilin and the rest were staying after the end of TSR, she was hiding from the street mobs. This is when he fell in love with her and probably the reason he was feeling down after that when he had to leave her.
Ah right, thanks, memory was obviously being a bit faulty.
-
I have a question about Juilin in LoC. He's described several times as having changed and at one point someone (Mat I think?) mentions that he doesn't smile anymore. This made me mentally scream Demandred! as I always do when I read about someone who doesn't smile much. But somehow I think that's incredibly unlikely so my question is: What's going on with him? I thought maybe it's cos of being away from Amathera(sp), but she was still Panarch I believe when he last saw her so surely he didn't get to know her?
Also in LoC, Min has a vision concerning one of the Wise One's (Colinda?), but she decides it's impossible and puts it down to the heat making her imagine things. Do we discover what this was all about?
-
is egwene going crazy? Because she has a small voice that brought her through the mesaana bit, much like LTT voice helped rand out during trying times
I think that's just like the little voice Nynaeve hears that tells her she's a coward and to blame for everything in the early books. The little voice we all hear now an then that points out things we don't notice straight away, or tells us things we don't like.

I constantly live in the WOT world - in my head... I have three kids now, who distract me and keep bringing me back to the real world to make them pink milk and get them chippies and chocolate, but I slip back in when ever I can.
That made me think, does anyone else project themselves into the book as made-up characters?

Your spouse begins a long, rambling conversation...but it doesn't bother you a bit. You think, "By the time 20 years have gone by, she'll probably be almost done. That's not so bad."
Ah on the subject of spouses:
If you're a female and you've done something to annoy your other half, you don't feel too guilty cos hey it could be worse - you could be Faile.
-
You do your best to master Aes Sedai dignity and occasionally feel the urge to wrap a non-existant shawl around you when being disapproving...
-
Well yeah, but Aiel don't even touch swords so either way it's pretty awful. BTW, never seen the cover cos I'm in England so was just trying to think who'd have a sword around Perrin.
-
Is it definitely Gaul? Might be Aram...
-
Maybe they played quidditch...
On that note, is there a word for a WoT "Muggle"? I feel there really ought to be.
That's a good idea actually. You'd have thought the WoT fandom would have thought up something snappier than "non-chanellers" after all these years.

Oh ok well they get killed by trollocs along with the rest of his family. As for before that, we never see them because he lived with the Luhhans. But yes it is rather strange that you never see him think of his family at all before they get killed. I didn't even know he had sibblings before that...
EDIT: Oh and I think we find out that they're dead in TSR.
