The Shadow Rising, chapter 13, Rumors

"The rumor is, my Lord, that the Whitecloaks have gone into the Two Rivers. Hunting the Dragon Reborn, it’s said. Though of course, that cannot be, since the Lord Dragon is here in Tear.” ... “These rumors can run very wild, my Lord. Perhaps it’s only wind in a bucket. The same rumor claims the Whitecloaks are after some Darkfriend with yellow eyes, too."
    [...]
[Perrin] "A hundred reasons to stay, but the one reason to go outweighs them. The Whitecloaks are in the Two Rivers, and they’ll hurt people trying to find me. I can stop it, if I go."

And Perrin does feel that he needs to give up his life to them in answer for his crimes.

The Shadow Rising, chapter 14, Customs of Mayene

Staring at the splintered gash his axe had made in the door, he found himself telling it what he could not tell her. “I killed Whitecloaks. They would have killed me if I hadn’t, but they still call it murder. I’m going home to die, Faile. That’s the only way I can stop them hurting my people. Let them hang me. I cannot let you see that. I can’t. You might even try to stop it, and then they’d . . . .”

I am very impressed with your knowledge and detail that you can find specific quotes from individual books. It reminds me (in a good way of the devotion WoT readers have) of the SNL skit with Kirk...

I often re-read favorite books. The first time I read a book I find myself getting swept up in the more exciting parts of the narrative. The second time I may find some nuance missed during the initial read.

I wish I had enough time to re-read my favorite books, but since I read about 20 books per year, I want to read new titles from new authors. Otherwise if I was rereading my favorites, I'd still be reading all the Asimov, Heinlein, and even David Eddings books.

Every show sees ratings drop as follow on seasons come out. Just look at the books' ratings: bk 1 had 14,736 ratings, bk 4 had 5,295 ratings, bk 8 had 3,645 ratings. I would consider probably at least 5-8 of the middle books to be somewhat bland and boring also - yet I stuck it out to the end.

I'm talking overall rating. not how many ratings they had. so for example. Let's say the average score from viewers of season 1 is 7. Season 2 could easily see that drop substantially when they realize that yes, the Dragon is Rand.

I think average score numbers become secondary. Look at GoT. S1 got a 96% on rotten tomatoes from viewers, while S8 got a 30% from viewers. Based on that horrible rating, why would HBO want to have a prequel series, and yet here comes House of the Dragon later this year.

Does anyone even understand what Parrot Analytics measures?  It is not any metrics similar to viewership, say like Nielsen measures in the US.

I used to work at DirecTV, and their streaming metric was that if a show was watched for more than a couple of minutes without interruption, it was considered the same as one who watched the entire show. Corporate wanted to claim large number of streamers for marketing purposes. I'm sure Parrot Analytics does similar metrics.

the show likely will see a ratings drop now that people will see that the Dragon is Bland boring Rand and not one of the superwomen.

So how will they improve? How can you really have optimism if they have no intention of change?

They believe they have the perfect blend right now.

For many shows, if the showrunner changes, the shows usually move in a different direction. Look at ST: Discovery. They're on showrunner #5, and each season seems to move the show in a completely different direction.

8 seasons is a pipe dream. Look at The Expanse - Amazon is only doing 6 seasons of which 3 are their own. And that's with Bezos actively wanting that show. I think the best we can expect is 4-6 seasons.

@orbops Amazon is very happy with the show, so 8 seasons is entirely doable.

DigificWriter - You misquoted me. See top quote for my thoughts...

I already wanted the show to get 8 seasons because I really like it, but now I perversely want it to get 8 seasons purely to spite all of the 'disappointed darkfriends' out there who are acting like Rafe and his team killed their grandmother.

For all those ripping Rafe for his adaptation, then consider how you would pace the show with only 4-6 seasons at 8 episodes/season? 14 books is impossible to mimic as a TV show.

Here's an example of even 14 books being too unwieldly. I was at Barnes & Noble a week ago in the Fantasy section. An older couple was looking for The Wheel of Time books, so I pointed out book 1 EofW for them. They were ready to buy it as a gift for their grandson until I told him that it is a 14 book series.  They immediately put it back and decided to buy the 6 book Dune gift set instead.

To do something new with the story. The books still exist. The story you care so deeply about isn't worse because someone chooses to tell it in a different way.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

So you think they could compress 14 books into maybe 4-6 seasons at 8 episodes per season and still stay 100% true to the novel???

If your plan is for 8 seasons and these things are things you want to show then you have to pull them forward.   Much easier for them to put the brakes on things already in progress if they get more seasons then it is to wait to introduce them later.

8 seasons? If we're lucky Amazon will give us 3-6 seasons. Even network tv shows rarely go past 5 anymore.

  11. General question - my wife and I read each of the books when they were initially published starting in 1990 and read the entire series just one time. We can barely remember anything from the books other than the names and characteristics of the main characters - so would you consider us to be non-readers? As we watch the show, we are often saying, " Oh yeah, I kinda remember this from the novels..."

Amazon literally does not care about the fans. It's nothing personal. It's just business.

Very true. But if the WoT book fans continually rip the show and give it 1 star, the overall ranking will drop. Look at how 1-5 stars is used everywhere now - aren't most people more inclined to go to a 4-5 star restaurant, than a 1-3 star one? Or use a higher rated service/product than a lower rated service/product?

Data can be meaningless without context. It's not just a straight word count that matters, but the focus of the story, events that happen, characters they interact with, things they say, etc. I think it's pretty obvious to most people that Rand has been sidelined so far.

Remember that Amazon said early on that the initial focus of season 1 would be from Moiraine's POV.

  14. I posted this originally in one of the news articles, but seems more appropriate here.

My wife and I are very happy with the adaption. Of course they're going to make major changes to the series, and realistically the most we can hope for is about 5-7 seasons. Even in the books, probably half of the books had nothing going on, and I remember the utter disappointment of only seeing Nynaeve for about 2 chapters in one of the middle books.

In today's streaming environment such as Tik Tok and YouTube, no one wants to even watch an hour show anymore. I remember that when I worked for DirecTV, they were counting a valid streamer if they only watched a couple minutes of a show.

For all the Amazon adaptation haters out there, think of it this way. If too many fans are ripping this adaptation apart, we won't even get to season 3 - and that means non-readers will not be motivated to read the series. If this series ends up being successful, it could create spinoffs like what Star Trek Discovery has done on Paramount+. These potential spinoffs could always focus on one of the characters, or events. Wouldn't you rather have 5-7 years of a WoT adaptation, rather than nothing more in the future? Since Amazon has spent $80M on just season 1, why would any other streamer take a chance in the future of another adaptation?
