  1. That is well said - and once again we are in need of an "agree to disagree" response.
  2. Except Rand did not exhibit "immense respect for women" in either our modern world context or the world of the books - his attempts to prevent the maidens of the spear from participating in battles were not well received (to the point where they were willing to commit mass suicide rather than permit it to continue), his attempts to choose on behalf of women who loved him that they could not be near him had a similar effect and even in the last book Egwene had to speak severely to him about the right o each person to choose. He was taking away their choices, in effect objectifying them or infantalising them which is not much better (ethicaly) than the misogynist attitude of treating women as sex objects.
  3. But creepy (or not in some cases, e.g. the relationship between Sleete and his Aes'Sedai) in very different ways. Conflating all of these into Alanna would rather reduce the green to the "orgy Ajah".
  4. Even if he still had it it would not be relevant (if book lore applies) - an angreal only helps prevent being shielded if you are already holding the source extra strongly through it when the shielding person/group strikes (and again if book lore were followed multiple independent shields would be no use there, it would need a single linked shield to overcome someone already holding the source with an angreal). Once shielded the possession of an angreal strength is not part of the equation as to whether the shield holds since the shielded person cannot reach out through it, they can only push against the shield.
  5. Knife fighting is Ebou Dari culture not Domani (who are more French post renaissance style with beauty marks etc). While in Tanchio the girls experience Domani cookery (spicy and using chopsticks) due to a current fad in town while putting up with the veils of Tanchio culture.
  6. That looked like true power traveling rather than a gateway.
  7. Not so. In New Spring where we see Moiraine inducted into the blue she is then taught their secrets.
  8. Plus adding this to the Liandrin's son diversion shows up how the extended life of an Aes Sedai can have an effect of isolating them from common humanity, particularly when you compare this to the relatively normal interactions of Alanna with her family.
  9. yes, i noticed that. one possibility is that the girls were unconscious until they entered the ways, and in the ways they could not channel to avoid drawing machin shin. but what prevented them from breaking free as soon as they got out? at least in the books, while everyone was screaming "she's obviously black!!!!" at the pages, she was still officially a regular aes sedai, with actual power to command novices, and she didn't outwardly drop her cover until the end. plot hole. Alternatively the red's do know how to tie off weaves and keep it is an Ajah secret (in line with book lore about the Ajah's having their own secret weaves).
  10. They have provided them with a nice big round tower on which to film a training montage.
  11. Surely you mean *Unbristles eyebrow, returns ears to upright, apologises for being hasty*
  12. But - the book lore is explicit that creating an effect at distance is much more effort than creating the same effect close up - hence Rand using an angreal wears himself out by acting as artillery support all day to the point where he nearly burns himself out. Egwene and Aviendha doing far less in total without angreal are worn out far sooner (but have the sense to stop at that point). Therefore at the distance of half a mile or so in book lore the shields even from the strongest Damane available to Suroth should have been so week that even 8 of them could not hold Rand. At the even greater distance Moiraine (who book lore is not strong in fire) should not have been able to blow up the front of one ship. The bowl of winds main benefit is to allow the channeling taking place close to the user to have an effect which extends to a much wider area avoiding this problem. Show lore clearly does not allow for this leveraging effect.
  13. D) In the spirit of the Aes Sedai interpreting the oath against using the one power as a weapon as widely as possible she considers any threat to the dragon to amount to a situation where she is defending herself from a threat to her own life (since if the dragon dies we they are all doomed).
  14. To be fair the only reason book Rand did not crush Turak with the power is that he was (wrongly) worried that the Damane would sense it if he did. I think he was going for deliberately (and visibly) slowly wearing Egwene down so that Rand would have time to despair and turn to save her.
  15. Ta'veren is a third age concept - the forsaken thought of Lews Therin and now Rand as being abnormally lucky rather than favored by the pattern. Since none of them are scared of too much power they assumed that his "leaving callandor behind" was a bluff and that he would use it to overwhelm them if they attacked.
  16. Given that at this stage Elrond is over 6,000 years old and has spent the whole third age as effective king of the high elves in middle earth from his perspective 80 years is hardly significant and Aragorn is still just starting out (and in the films at least he has not been seeking to take up the burden of kingship).
  17. True, those situations feel more like the ones where Aes Sedai burn themselves out or still themselves when they pull too much or when using a Ter'angreal. There is also the fact that what they know is limited to the fact that Most Aes Sedai are much weaker than the Forsaken or Rand, or even Egwene. The description in the book is specific - Egwene (in the dream) shapes a shield and then deliberately makes the edges sharp (reasoning that this is necessary as the target already holds the source) - Nynave later tries the same thing against Moghedien when they fight in Tanchio but cannot hold the edge while forcing it home. As Egwene's target was using a lesser dream ter'angreal at the time and only part asleep it is possible that either the dreaming made her more vulnerable or Egwene made subconscious use of her dreaming abilities to strengthen her attack but it was most certainly stilling (once the target was fully unconscious) not burning out. Rand at Dumai's Well was also stilling as those sisters were later healed.
  18. 100%. Still, I hope on a re-watch it doesn't come across as so off-key. It fits with the books - Aes Sedai are smugly convinced that they know everything it is worth knowing (about the one power and everything else) and until something new is rubbed in their faces they do not admit it exists. Aes Sedai do not know how to tie off weaves therefore they cannot be tied off and she is not able to think otherwise so she must be stilled. But I really do not like the "one forsaken could not have stilled you" - when Rand breaks the shield at Dumai's wells he stills multiple Aes Sedai at once.
  19. Much the same with ancient Rome under the ceasars - there was a lot of scheming and executions among the ruling classes while the common citizens enjoyed the benefits of security and the rule of law.
  20. Much the same as the interactions with some of the other Seanchan "exotics" and their handlers (morat') - pity they do not have the CGI budget to show these for comparison.
  21. Not quite no book, we are often treated to the description of their bucket and prisoners generally get a bit of exercise or such. Or we get a nice graphic (to some degree) description of the smell, like Rand's box. Thankfully I have never come across a description of the bucket being used, just not needed, imho. GOT did treat us to Tyrion and Varys complaining to each other about having to dispose of Tyrion's shit while he was locked in his box.
