  1. World War Z was a fantastic book. It also holds up really well on a reread.
  2. Yes, you should read the Dark Tower books. They've been out long enough that you can get them used. I'd get the first three from the library, then if you like them, you can get 'permanent' copies / the rest of the series. I read the first one over 20 years ago - before King went back and revised it to fit in with the later books in the series. I didn't like it as much then, but my tastes have changed enough since - I liked it a lot when I reread them all a few years ago. Tolkein is definitely a huge influence on the series, as are western movies. The homage to Tolkein isn't on the surface, it is more reflections and echoes.
  3. We still don't know who Jon's parents were. The one reference in aDWD to possible infidelity by Ned Stark was with Ashara Dayne, and her stillborn daughter. That would be so very Ned - feel guilty about an affair you had, but the child you raise and claim as your bastard isn't actually yours. I also noticed more hints about possible infidelity on the part of Aerys and Tywin Lannister's wife. Wouldn't it be a hoot if Tywin's kids are actually Rhaegar's half-siblings? Stannis and Renly rebel because Robert's kids are not actually his, with no claim to the throne, but it turns out Joffrey had more of a claim to the throne than Robert the usurper, because Aerys was his grandfather.
  4. Haven't run into any wOT in real life - but a few close calls: A hockey player for the Bruins last season was Miroslav Satan - however, it is pronounced Shah-tahn. Had a game on in the living room, I was in the kitchen when I hear "..and Shai'tan clears it out of the zone!!". A near miss, because we all know the real GLOTD wears a Flyers jersey. There's a used car dealer down the road named "Lewis Henry Auto Sales" - I keep seeing the sign as "Lews Therin" instead.
  5. Fall 1990 / Spring 1991 for me - freshman year of college. I had seen the trade and regular paperback copies of EOTW in bookstores for a few months, and picked one up to see what the fuss was about. A few months later TGH came out in trade paperback. I lurked/posted on both newsgroups - the already mentioned rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan and I think the other one was alt.fan.jordan And yes, I still have my first copy of EOTW.
  6. After trying to keep up with 160+ pages of posts, and rereading books 4-6, here's what has struck me about the "unnoticed thing" so far: - Nynaeve and Elayne were compulsed by Moghedien in Tanchico. Nynaeve managed to remember it when fighting Moggy. I don't recall it being mentioned if Elayne has been feed of it. What if both of them are still under the compulsion? - At the beginning of TSR, a bubble of evil causes reflections of Rand to jump out of mirrors and attack him. Did this have any effect on Rand? Shortly after, Lanfear makes an appearance, and Rand is able to access Lews Therin's memories and blurt out that she always loved power. I don't think Rand had access to Lews Therin's memories before wrestling with his own reflections. It is also after this attack that Rand's temper is a lot more volatile. I can't think of anything else at this point that hasn't already been discussed to death...
