  1. Well, all the adam discussion got me thinking.......

What happens when an a'dam is used on a person using it?

What happens if two a'dam(s?) are put on a single person?

What happens if two people use a'dam on each other?

Those are very interesting question. I can think of no real evidence either way, but my guess is the first scenario might work (giving the bearer of the second a'dam control over the entire circle), but the latter two probably involve someone dying horribly, maybe everyone involved.

We do know that one sul'dam can control two damane with an a'dam bracelet on each wrist - Tuon does this in KoD Ch. 9, and I think we also saw some sul'dam do it when they were capturing lots of channelers.

But I think you probably meant if someone had two collars put on them - in which case, yeah, I think that horrible death sounds likely.

  2. what exactly is a shocklance?

Sammael says that he wishes he had one and it would make things a lot easier as far as killing Rand or something.  Is it just...well, literally a lance that shocks you?

I think the bent black rod that Asne got from Moghedien and uses in KoD Ch. 31 might be a shocklance. It sounds like it works pretty much like a phaser in Star Trek - basically that it's an energy gun. She says it can kill or stun at a hundred paces, and the description of what it does sounds like some sort of ray gun to me. Thoughts?

I don't remember where this quote came from-someone else would need to dig it up-but I'm pretty sure RJ said that was kind of like a shock-pistol.  A smaller version that worked in much the same way.  And yes, it does kind of sound like a phaser.

    Voila:

A Crown of Swords book tour 9 October 1996, Dunwoody, GA - Erica Sadun reporting

Q:  Are shocklances guns, or an energy discharge weapon?

    RJ:  Energy discharge weapons.

Robert Jordan Tour Report: Dayton, OH Tim Kington

Q: Was the gizmo used to capture Elayne a shocklance?

A: It was a variation. A shocklance is more like a rifle, and this was more like a pistol.

    Nice, thanks for the quote!

  4. Are we sure the Seanchan beasties aren't shadowspawn?

I know the first reaction is ACK SHADOWSPAWN.  And then someone familiar with Seanchan are like no, WORSE, Seanchan!

But, i have to wonder, is it possible that the critters are shadowspawn, just domesticated?

We know that the Seanchan exotics are from another world accessed via portal stone. So, I tend to think they aren't Shadowspawn, but I suppose they could technically be other world Shadowspawn.

  5. during that time I believe Mat is with the girls in Tanchico, Salidar, Ebou dar,

Mat was never in Tanchico. He was on his way to Illian when Perrin arrived in Caemlyn, and later he joined the girls.

in know that, what i mean is why the similarity in colors

No, I don't think there was any intention to hint at men being evil. The symbol is from a time before the DO was known. It might have something to do with the color of heart-stone. I've seen speculation that men-made cuendillar is black.

I too suspect that cuendillar made by men is black. I'm trying to remember if we have any examples of cuendillar in a color other than black or white. I don't think so...

Clearly the symbol is based on Yin/Yang, which also represents male and female, destruction and creation, etc. all in balance working with and against each other just like WoT. Series-wise, it probably originated as the symbol of saidin/saidar pushing on each other to turn the wheel (makes sense for the symbol of AoL AS), and the black and white are probably to show them as opposites.

  6. One thing that has always confused me (or maybe it's just that it annoys me so much) is the Faile/Perrin relationship.

Lots of people throughout the series who meet Faile seem to think that Perrin has no idea what he's got himself into. Is that just because Faile (or all Saldean women) wants her husband to stand up to her, yell at her and hit her back every once in a while? or is there more to it?

And what is berelain up to? why would she go after perrin, who is married and is obviously not interested in her. just to annoy Faile...??

man that whole plotline really drives me up the wall everytime i read it.

I think part is the Saldaean thing, but I think partly (at least when Moiraine thinks about Perrin getting in over his head with her, can't remember which chapter) is that Faile is in line for the Saldaean throne. If Tenobia dies I think that as her cousin Faile could become queen (the Broken Crown) and when Perrin and her were first getting involved he had no clue she was nobility at all.

    As for Berelain:

I think that Berelain is fascinated by Perrin because he's one of the only guys she's come across that's resisted her advances and hasn't drooled all over. Since pretty much every other guy seems to stare at her quite a bit, I can see why this might intrigue her - just because he's different and she sees it as a challenge. (Sure, Rand refused her too, but then he scared the crap out of her, so that didn't really have the same effect. And he still stares a lot).

For people who say Perrin picked the wrong one, I've gotta say I really hated Berelain when she was first introduced (probably because I'm a chick) but I will say she's grown on me a little bit now that her character has been more fleshed out than when she just throws herself at Rand. I don't really like how she goes after Perrin even though she knows he's married, but I also think Faile should get mad at Berelain, not Perrin since he clearly doesn't encourage her. That's what Aviendha would do ;)

  7. Yeah, I took his quote from a different thread, I think. It just helped me to make my case. Regardless, what do you think?

I'd say yes, due to what Moraine said in tEotW with Rand and the other two.  As I recall she gave Perrin and Mat coins as well and they pretty much followed her without too many questions, or so it appeared.

I thought pretty much the only active behavior change was that the boys all felt a strong urge to keep the coins that she gave them if they could. Which makes sense, because when a Finder leaves their possession it stop tracking. But I don't really think that Moiraine compelled them any other way - I think simply her being AS and a noblewoman was enough to make it easy to convince three unworldly country lads to follow her. That and the realization that their village was being endangered by their presence.
