Weekly Musings of an Insane Firebird: Video Game Music

Gabriel Kross

For those of you hoping for a Wheel of Time related article, I have plans for more of those soon. However, this week will be about video game music. I grew up playing games like the Final Fantasy series, and that music has always made an impression on me. So, this week, I figured I'd share a few of my favorite songs from video games.

I'd like to start with a favorite composer: Nobuo Uematsu. As many people know, he is the composer of most of the Final Fantasy series. The first song I ever heard from Nobuo Uematsu was the Opening theme to FF8, but the name eludes me at the moment. That song was probably the first big push I had into the world of music. I had been slightly involved with chorus and such at that point, but I didn't take music seriously until I heard that. A few other game soundtracks that he composed that I rank up there with it are Terra, which is Terra Brandford's theme from FF6, 1000 Words from FFX-2, To Zanarkand from FFX, Aerith's Theme from FF7, and Distant Worlds from FF11. Some of his work can also be heard if you listen to The Black Mages. They perform several of his more iconic songs.

Another series that had good music was the Zelda series. Regrettably, I am not a fan of the games, so I don't have specifics like I did for Nobuo's work. A new favorite of mine is Jeremy Soule, the composer of the Guild Wars 2 music, namely Fear Not this Night, sung by Asja. If there were anyone that I'd want to see make music for Wheel of Time, it'd be him. One final video game that I felt deserved a mention for its music was Tera Online. While there aren't that many famous songs, the quality of the songs is outstanding. Inon Zur and Rod Abernethy did wonders with their work on the music. Of all the games I've played, these are the games/series that really stood out.

I believe that Fithos Lusec is the title of theopening theme to FF8, which I agre is spectacular. Also a big fan of To Zanarkand and Aerith's Theme.

My musical tastes tend more towards guitar-driven stuff. I have this one album that I always use as my alternate soundtrack when playing World of Warcraft. Their in-game music is already pretty good, but I like mine better, so I turn down the in-game music volume, and let iTunes run in the background playing Dream Theater's "Systematic Chaos," which has very cool power metal themes like possession, demons, ghosts, vampires, and secret societies. It's the only album they made like that, just works of supernatural fiction with dark themes. Turns out it's nearly a perfect match for a good WoW instance run, or for those grind periods where you're just trying to level up. Dream Theater also has an instrumental song on the last God of War game, called "Raw Dog."

As for existing game soundtracks, all the FF games have stellar music. Brilliantly composed, same as all the Zelda games. Original music is certainly the better choice, but sometimes just selecting really good existing tracks can have an impact too. I wasn't really a fan of the game Brutal Legend. They had a great idea that was pretty poorly executed, but it did have some extremely well-placed hard rock and metal tunes.

Oh, and don't forget the Diablo soundtracks. All of them were perfect, especially the Tristram theme. I was glad that made an appearance in Diablo 3.

Not to be that guy, but a correction: Uematsu didn't have any involvement with the music for FFX-2. "1000 Words" was written by Kazushige Nojima, Noriko Matsueda, and Takahito Eguchi (thanks, Final Fantasy Wiki.)

"Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" is the name (and sole lyric) of another track from FFVIII. The title is an anagram of the phrase "succession of witches" combined with the word "love."

You should check out Lost Odyssey, it's my favourite RPG of all time and it's developed by Mistwalker who are the team who worked on the original Final Fantasies up to ff10 I believe, the soundtrack is also done by Uematsu and it's absolutely AMAZING!!

Ah, I didn't know he wasn't a part of X-2, good to know.

Also, I looked at Lost Odessy when it came out, the battle system is kind of bleh in my book.
