Thursdays with Tynaal: Wheel of Time Couples

Tynaal Consen

For those of you who utilize the commercialistic ways of modern society to embrace a little romance once in awhile, I'm sure you made the best of your Valentine's Day. And for those who felt more lonely on this Singles Awareness Day than on the other days of the year, remember this: "You may not mean anything to the world, but you mean the world to someone."

In this week's wonderfully romantic spirit, I bring to you my personal favorite and least favorite couples in the Wheel of Time. (Please be wary of spoilers; I can definitely think of one that's from Towers of Midnight.)

Some of the couples, or shall I say ex-couples, I actually liked quite a bit. The romance between Rand and Egwene just had that marvelous and beautiful innocence of youth. It felt like the type of endearing scenario where childhood friends are destined to marry. That was one relationship that was dashed rather early in the series. Another bygone relationship that we were never part of, but I'd have loved to see happen again, is that between Thom and Morgase. But that also proved not to happen.

I'm personally not a fan of the whole Rand, Min, Elayne, and Aviendha relationship, but of those three I must say that Rand and Min's romance seems to come the most naturally despite the fact that she knows they will end up together.

A matrimony that doesn't get much spotlight, but is definitely one that just seems so organic and perfect for me, is the one that sister-wives Lian and Amys have with each other and with their husband, Rhuarc.

Before I get distracted by just discussing all the couples, I shall come to those on the top of my list. Heading the list are Tallanvor and Morgase tied with Nynaeve and Lan.

I simply cannot dislike Lan and Nynaeve. Despite their relationship being a strange one, I think it's extremely charming simply because I adore Lan being so in love. To me it makes an impact because Lan seems so emotionally distant and seems to fill any void he has with his oath to battle the Shadow. His marriage with Nynaeve brings something much more positive to his life. I, for one, hope that they survive Tarmon Gai'don and make lots of babies to repopulate Malkier.

What I love about Morgase and Tallanvor is just the pure romance of it--their difference in ranks, their passionate love, and the stubbornness they originally displayed in regards to it. It's so cliche, but so cute too.

Last, but not least, I shall mention my least favorite couple. This is where the Towers of Midnight spoiler comes in. Thom and Moiraine...I mean, really? Many say they can see how it was coming, but it seems so forced to me. The scene and how it happened just seemed so unnatural. I have to admit, after the first shock of it, the idea doesn't sound that bad anymore. It's quite adorable and touching. In the end, I guess it is my least favorite simply because it was so unexpected.

Which is your favorite couple? Who would you like to see together? Comment and let me know.

I really like Perrin and Faile's relationship, mostly because Perrin is so oblivious during the beginning of it. It's quite entertaining.

I know many people hate Perrin and Faile.. But I must say their relationship seems like one of the most natural ones. Normal hiccups and such :P

Tobias, oh that poor Myrdraal!

I totally did not read the right parts apperantly and everything was spoiled! MOIRAINE AND THOM!!?? Holy crap!? I did not expect that at all. I guess when I get to the part I will just have to skip it because it's going to piss me off. Anyway, I personally like Elayne and Rands relationship all though you don't see them together very much. I personally just like Elaynes way of dealing with being pregnant. I am reading The Gathering Storm right now and I just started so I haven't heard anything from her yet, but I hope too soon. I hope I get to see her and Rand's babies. Next time, please make sure you CAPS LOCK the SPOILER ALERT and put a whole bunch of numbers beside it. Thanks (:

I also did not see the whole Thom and Moiraine thing coming BUT, as I do my reread I see so many hints and even dead give-aways I realize I should have seen it coming all along! In The Shadow Risingthere is a scene where Moiraine says to the other girls that she knows better than any of them who her husband would be. After she goes through the Ter'angreal to get her true answers she talks to Thom and guarantees him that he will not die if he goes with the other girls to watch their backs in Abu Dar. I never put those to things together until I did my most recent reread, but that alone should have been enough to give it away. Because face it; WE ALL KNEW MOIRAINE WOULD BE BACK!

Okay Wotislove.. I'll add some special numbers just for you next time :P If the editor allows it >.>

Gaijin, I think a lot of it is typical for the whole thing of once you know what you're looking for the clues are so completely obvious, but unless you do, they just seem like innocent comments.

I agree on the Thom-Moiraine scene in Towers of Midnight. That may have been my biggest WTF!? moment in the entire series. I'm re-reading now and picking up on clues that it was coming as far back as The Great Hunt, but it still seems weird. Favorite couple is hard for me--I like most of the others in the series, even the failed/abandoned ones.

I believe the hints on the Thom-Moriaine relationship began in book 1. When Rand tells her that Thom is dead, she says that she doesn't believe it. I don't know how she could have known at that point since she hadn't been through any future granting ter-angreal yet that we know of.

I remember thinking there was something going on between Thom and Moriaine ever since book one when Thom started making comments about Moriaine being a 'fine woman' despite the fact she was Aes Sedai. So to me the scene in ToM was just the realisation of something I'd waiting for for a VERY long time.

As for my favorite couple, without a doubt Mat and Tuon, they are the most hilarious and unlikely couple in the series. Their relationship is brilliant, and I'm gutted we won't be getting a whole book of them reclaiming Seanchan.

Thank you. I figured out that Moiraine actually lived when I accidently read one sentence from the back of ToM, "Moiraine silently sipped her tea." I was so mad at myself. I had no idea that she would come back. I didn't think she was dead, but I also didn't think she would come back! I am happy that she does and look forward to reading what she will do with Rand and now Thom, I guess! (:

I actually saw the Moiraine and Thom relationship back when I first read the series, before KoD even came out. So it wasn't so much of a shock to me.

Yeah, I saw Moraine and Thom from miles off, and I'm generally not the most adept at picking that sort of thing out. The tone of the letter she gave him certainly suggests it, though. As well as the way she acts in the Dragon Reborn when she's revealing how much she knows about his past.

Mat and Tuon have got to be my favorite and least favorite couple. They're cute together, I must admit, and Mat refusing to anybody who will listen that the whole thing is going to make him soft rates with the funniest moments of the series. But there isn't a whole lot of POV from Tuon, and nowhere is there much to suggest that she's anything more than fond of him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't she just marry him because his releasing her completes the final omen or whatever? I'm pretty sure I even remember a chapter where she considers that she might one day grow to love him but doesn't really believe it. There had better be something to remedy that in AMoL, of I'm going to spend the whole book feeling bad for Mat.

Nah, I think Tuon's POV after she kisses Mat makes a pretty explicit foreshadowing of their real feelings for each other. Plus I have more faith in RJ and BS than that. Mat and Tuon all the way!

I love this post and the responses.

Yes, there were hints about Moraine and Thom in book one, but you really had to pay attentiong and look for details. Mr. Jordan did such a good job of throwing obscure hints. Book 4 pretty much made it bluntly clear that they felt for each other (under Mr. Jordan standards...)

Tuon has yet to declare she loves Mat, but that is simply because she can't see it herself, but all the hints are there. And Mat is simply smitten! Through all his grumbling at what he thinks it means to be married (quite comical really, kind of like what a lil toddler might think!), he would have it no other way.

Nynaeve and Lan are an awesome couple. It is because the compliment each other so much. Its not just two pieces coming together to make a whole. Its kind of like one of Perrin's blacksmith puzzles. They have so many bends and shapes that it looks like it would be impossible to fit anything together with either of them. Then, somehow, the master blacksmith just slides the two pieces together in a way you could never imagine and tada, a true masterpiece. Love them!!!!

And Rand's relationships!!! OMG!!!

-- With Elayne: It's like a royal relationship. It gives Rand someone who will help guide him in ruling nations, understanding the Wetlanders as a whole. I think this is probably the shallowest of his relationships, but no doubt they love each other, and truly need each other.

--With Aviendha: This is really a relationship that binds him to the Aiel. Helps make them feel like they are his people, and not just an army. Though, he is a slow learner in that area... This relationship is really forcing Aviendha to see who she truly is, where her place is among the Aiel.

--With Min: Wow, this one is probably my favorite, because I love down to earth people, and she is down to earth! She is what grounds Rand, and what leads him back to who he really is deep inside. She is not impressed with crowns and thrones. She loves the man, not the Dragon, but rather the silly farm boy who couldn't speak properly in front of a beautiful woman.

--The three women together, cover all the aspects every man wants, whether he knows it or not. Hey, women are complicated, we love them that way. :)

Perrin and Faile: An everyday couple, with all the quirks that we all have. You could picture them living next door. Fiercly loyal to each other, willing to do ANYTHING for the other. You simply have to love them!

My two cents.... I could go on for a while.

Rand and Elayne? No, please give me a break. Rand and Lanfear were, are and will always be so much more! As Lews Therin, Rand dumped Lanfear because she was too ambitious. And Elayne is not (lol)? Despite being dumped, Lanfear kept loving him so passionately that she was willing to use sa'angreal to challenge the Dark One. After Rand got laid with Aviendha, Lanfear got so angry that her love turned to equally passionate hatred (as it sometimes really does), so she tried to kill Rand, knowing that she would almost certainly provoke the Dark One's wrath. Lanfears feelings may be called twisted, but one that can love could not be truly evil. Elayne, on the other hand, in "Andor or Rand" mode, almost coldly decides she would sacrifice Rand. Honestly, if you would start reading WOT for the first time, you would lost nothing if you would skip all Elayne chapters. Reading through them almost makes me vomit, especially when it comes to Elayne's private thinking and dilemmas. It became interesting again when I started supporting anyone who may get a chance to save us from her stupidity once for all. A myrdaal would be too god for her (elegant, powerful, dedicated...). She would make an appropriate couple with a trolloc!

And poor Rand? For a smart man, even one wife is too many! With three of them, he would really be lucky if he dies in Tarmon Gai'don.

I love the relationship between Lanfear and Lews Therin, as well as Egwene and Gawyn's relationship, but my favorite by far is the relationship between Mat and Tuon. I read and reread those chapters; they were sheer brilliance.

So...I'm commenting on this really late, but I only just got an account...

For Rand's relationships, I'm not a fan. Min represents emotional love, Aviendha is physical love, and Elayne is practical love. At least in my opinion. It's like he has three women, but he isn't getting anything more out of it than if there were just one. Personally, I loved him and Egwene, but I knew it wasn't going to last.

All my favorite couples don't exist. I had formed in my head this romance between Logain and Leane, but it just didn't happen. I just loved the way they interacted together, and I don't know why. Mat and Aludra was also a favorite of mine.
