OOC: Short Recap: The Sitters have decided to send an embassy to Andor, to the city of Aringill where they have found a large mansion to try and find a cure for Derek, son of Lord Hearne. The party is there now, just arrived in the mansion and getting ready to set up. Dawn and Nyssa will depart for Tear to get the son to Aringill and then the Yellows would start to try and Heal him. http://whitetowerdiv.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4641&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

The words of caution Finella had written down in her note on the morning of their departure rung clear in Dawn’s head as she led her brown mare into the grounds of the mansion. They had finally arrived after yet another long day of traveling through Andor. In a day or so they would be traveling again, Nyssa and herself needed to go into Tear and get Derek, son of Lord Hearne here. She placed a hand over her mouth to cover a yawn and smiled at Nyssa who was looking sternly over at the mansion. Dawn imagined the woman had already picked the room that was tactically best for the Gray. She smiled as she let her eyes wander over the party, the Yellow Sisters sat together on their horses, staring at the building that would be their home for the next few months. Deiria had descended her horse and given the reins to the stable boy, she seemed ready enough to begin. For a moment Dawn regretted she could not bring the White along with her into Tear, but the less people in their party, the better chance they had of coming out unnoticed. Nyssa and herself had made up names to travel under and had been using these names during their trip to Aringill to practice them and feel comfortable not slipping back in their own name.

The Gray let herself slip out of the saddle and took her pouch from the saddle bag, it held her papers and pencil as she knew she was to send word of their arrival instantly. The servants came out of the house, ready to show them to their rooms. The rooms were ready for the guests to enter and Dawn wondered how much had already been arranged by Finella while they were traveling to get here. The Gray Sitter surely left nothing up to chance and Dawn pulled her saddle bag close to her. “I can take those Aes Sedai†the woman said with a surprised look on her face. How long would it be before they could return to the Tower and not have to deal in such caution again, Dawn did not know but for now she liked to keep hold of what was her own. “I’m fine thank you, what is your name pray tell?†The woman made a curtsy and said, “My name is Eva Langill, I live in the servants quarters in the East wing of the mansion with my husband and the other servants who work here. As requested there are only five of us left, you will be able to meet them as soon as you are ready Aes Sedai.†Yes the servants were well prepared and Dawn smiled briefly, deciding to trust this Eva after all. “Show us to our rooms then, Eva.†She said and thus began on what they had come here to do.

Fayth shook her head as she peeked her head into the room that was shown to her, she had a room all to herself but found it way to elaborate and pretty for her taste. Fayth like a room that was simple and had only the bare necessities, it was not like she would spend more hours than those she slept in here. She brushed of the brown riding breeches and then stepped in to take a closer look at her new quarters. The Grays had gone up to the second floor where their rooms would be, her own rooms were along with the other Yellow Sisters on the first floor. There was one room next to her own that was not in use just yet, Derek would be spending his days in there. Close to the Yellow Sisters who had to help him, Desandre had given them a lot of information and a few books to study while they were here. She had also given them the means to ask the Tower for more information once they found out more about the boy’s mysterious disease. For now, they had to wait for the Grays to get the boy into Aringill. So Fayth decided to clean herself up and get the dust out of her short black hair before they were all expected for dinner together. She wondered who she could trust outside of her Ajah, but then realized that it mattered little. Once the boy was here she would be busy trying to Heal his illness and help him. That was her task, all else was not important to Fayth.

Her room was on the second floor after Nyssa had made sure she had the room she wanted, Dawn placed herself on the bed and waited for Eva to finish unpacking her clothes and belongings. Once the servant was gone, Dawn leaned back on the bed and closed her eyes. For an hour or so she could be alone and then she had to start planning how she and Nyssa would go into Tear. Of course a lot was already planned in advance, but they had to wait the message from Lord Hearne about his son’s condition and about the current situation in Tear. The message was expected the following morning at the latest and then they would decide when to depart. Hopefully as soon as the sun came up, for Dawn hated to have to wait when so much was at stake.

Her eyes closed, her breathing going slower Dawn felt the tension flow out of her. They had made it to Aringill and that was all she could have hoped for. Now it was a matter of getting everyone settled in and not arouse too much attention to their situation. They were only an hour from the border with Tear and the Gray was sure that Lord Hearne’s cousin had spies out everywhere for things to change in the House of Hearne. More tension building up again as she thought about this, her hands moved over her temples as she tried to rub out all the worry, failing miserably at that. She waited, then opened her eyes only to find another person in the room.

Dawn rose from the bed and stared up surprised, “How did you get in without me hearing it?†Nyssa smiled at her old mentor and said, “I found the hidden door that allows us to travel between our rooms without going out into the hallway.†Dawn nodded and looked around to see if anything had changed, she did not see any hidden door and wondered how it was that Nyssa had found it so soon after their arrival. “I have a bit of a headache,†she murmured explaining why she was lying on the bed instead of preparing for things to be taken care of. She was supposed to lead the party as much as was needed and here she was, lying on the bed and slacking off. “Tension, I guess…†though it was dangerous to disclose she was worried, Dawn did trust Nyssa as much as she could trust anyone. She needed to confide her worries into someone, or she would never have a moment’s peace again. “Is everyone settled in?†she said and rose to meet her Gray Sister. Nyssa being a lot taller than Dawn had no trouble at all staying on the same height, it was remarkable how used the two women were to each other’s presence. She pondered over asking Nyssa to help her relieve the stress by telling her it would all be alright, but what kind of a start of their task would that be if she could not handle it on day one. She had to confide in Nyssa, but her worry about failing again had to remain hidden as deep in herself as possible.

It had been a log yet uneventful trip as Corin slid from the saddle of the dapple mare he had for this trip from the tower. His first true assignment outside the tower walls since he was raised to Tower Guard. A flood of memories raced through his mind at the thought of his raising, drawing a smile for a moment and then a frown. He hoped the package he had given for delivery had made it’s way un-violated to her hands. Only time would tell; time to think and review past decisions and those to come. Turning an eye again over the party, he could see that the servants where well in hand aiding the Aes Sedia with their gear into the mansion. He studied it briefly over the saddle, a low two story building of gray stone; it’s non descript angles marked it as that of perhaps a wealthy merchant or lower house. The golden hue of the setting sun, bathed the area in rich golden colors; glinted off the tile roof and then dimmed as the reflections fell behind the thin tendrils of smoke rising from two of the three chimney stacks along it’s pitch. The sound of approaching footsteps marked a stable boy’s arrival and drew Corin’s attention back from his studies. Grabbing a rolled pack from the back of the saddle, he handed the boy the reins and then pressed a silver penny into his palm; sliding the bag’s strap or the boys shoulder. “Ensure that pack is in my room by the time I return won’t you boy.†Directed more as a statement of fact then a question the boy looked to his hand and then to Corin with a big smile on his freckled face. Nodding he ran off; Corin barely able to free the hand that was messing his hair before he was gone, the horse at a trot behind him.

Turning his gaze to the yard and surrounding he noticed Christopher doing the same. The man had been very quiet on the trip here and now seemed lost in his study of the potential defense of the mansion as Corin had been. “Well Christopher, it seems we have a common thought here. Shall we go for a walk.†The tall man looked over toward Corin a slight smile working it’s way across his lips before he dropped into a joking bow, arm sweeping out in the direction of the gate, “After you of course.†Corin let out a little chuckle, “A man of many words I see, very well,†and he stepped forward with Christopher toward the gate. It was good to see that not everything was going to be heavy on this trip. Corin welcomed the opportunity to laugh; he had done little since their last meeting, by now she should be heading north. The thought slipped through his mind briefly before he forced it back. Stepping out of the gate with Christopher, they headed around the building surveying the surrounding block and the state of the low wall surrounding the mansion grounds. It was really more of a rock work fence then a wall. But it could be used as an aid in the event this became unhinged. Corin let his fingers slide over the smooth marred surface of the weather worn stone and across the mortar joints that held them together. The cool hard surface a constant reminder of preparedness drilled into him by his previous mentor.

Corin talked idly as they made their way around the exterior, two gentlemen out for a stroll he hope it would be perceived as. Shoed hooves rung out on the gray slate roads as a carriage creaked by, but was quickly dismissed as it did not stop. Many of the buildings in the immediate view of the mansion where low single story brick dwellings, most with thatched roofs, which reduced the chances of an unseen archer, but the chance always remained. A cross breeze stirred the dirt from the edge of the road, dust and fine rocks skittering along the roadway with the odd bit of refuse. But for the most part the area was clean and well kept, the air from the nearby river keeping the town smell to a minimum Looking back at Christopher, Corin hoped he held that disinterested look as well as Christopher did. It was a skill learned over time that became habit, for some easier then others. Arriving back at the gate, they separated and circled in opposite directions inside to ensure they where familiar with the grounds around the mansion and any defile, bush or shed. Anything that could be used to gain access or closeness with the mansion un seen. Meeting back up at the gate again, they slowly made their way toward the building as they reviewed each other’s findings. The most talk Corin had gotten out of the other man the whole time since their arrival. With an agreement reached between them on their findings they headed into the mansion to find their rooms and met with the other guards to once again verify findings with the whole group. Protection of the sisters fell on their shoulders and none took that duty lightly.

- - - - - Sovald looked around the room. It would do. He didn't plan on using it that much. Oh, he knew that they might be spending a great deal of time here, but he wasn't too much thinking of spending it all inside. There wasn't much that would keep him inside. And who knew how long they would be here... He thought back to getting the assignment - he had met Dawn before - after that regrettable incident, and that was when he had met Nyssa as well. So it was a surprise to be called up for.... this. Whatever this was. He didn't care much - it was his job to keep the women safe, and that he would do. Oh, he knew that they would make it exceptionally hard for him, but he would still try his best. It had been a long ride, and an interesting one. Other that in his spare time, Sovald had not seen the southern lands, the lands that he had often dreamed of being the wall against, defending them. His few things were safely stowed way on Jeade'en as he rode, nothing too drastic happening. It was a calm ride - as well it should be, with so many Aes Sedai, and Tower Guard. They made it to the mansion - a southern extravagance, a house built too big and too fragile, in Sovald's opinion. Not even that good of architechure. And as for the quality of the metalwork... it was peposterous!

- - - - - They had arrived slowly, Sovald taking up the rear, keeping to himself. He was a man of few friends, and strong loyalties. He helped the Aes Sedai and servants as best he could, without getting in the way. Only when everyone else, including the other guards, were settled in comfortably, did he manage his own things. Jeade'en was used to it, and waited patiently. Sovald took his few clothes, his basic equipment and kit, his books, and went up to his room. Carefully setting the things out, he looked around. Too big a room. But it would do.

- - - - - When that task was done, he wrapped his cloak around his shoulders, checked his sword, and headed back down. He took care of Jeade'en, giving careful grooming and feeding, wiping him down well. Then, back out to survey the area. He took in the entire area, evaluating the walls, each area for attack. The routes into the mansion. Then back up, looking over the layout of the inside. The Aes Sedai were seperated up into two main suites across from each other, then the Yellows had an entire floor to work on... The Tower Guard had rooms flanking them, and a pair of Guards up on the upper floor. They would not be losing anyone, not if Sovald could help it. Back outside, he took a walk around the outside walls next, partially looking, and partially relaxing. It was a nice enough place.... The Sedai were upstairs last he knew, unpacking. He still didn't know any of them, and didn't have any real drive too - Sedai were cunning and manipulative, and often dangerous. He would settle for protecting them. He went back towards the main door, choosing a good seat to see the gate and the door. Then, he pulled out one of his books - The Spear of Lotheran. And he began to read, his eyes still watching for any signs of danger.

Being away from the tower always brightened Nyssa’s mood to a point where it couldn’t get any better. From the first time she had left the tower as an Accepted to her last trip to Illian, she had always loved being able to get out of the stuffy tower. Even if trips were dangerous, especially in this day and age. She had gotten into trouble more than once, but she had also always gotten out of it. Recently she had also taken the time to actually learn how to ride a horse properly. It was a vast improvement, and now she could enjoy the road towards their destination as much as the destination itself.

With the Tower Guards around them Nyssa felt that the other Aes Sedai joining them on their trip were relaxing as well. There was much to see on the road, especially for those who spent most of their years in Tar Valon. Nyssa almost regretted it when the mansion they would stay at for the next few months came in sight. Then she realised that this mansion was old, and would hold many secrets, the way these places always seemed to do. The moment she was settled into her room she started her exploration of it. It didn’t take her long to find the first secret. In the back of her closet she found a door, leading towards the room next to hers. Since her former mentor Dawn was staying in that room, she saw no harm in actually trying it out.

Dawn was slightly startled when she seemed to appear out of nowhere, but Nyssa soon explained the existence of the hidden door. “Look.†She said, pressing against the wall. The door swung inside, to reveal her own room. “convenient, isn’t it?†She saw that her Sister seemed distracted by something else. When Dawn noticed that Nyssa was observing her, she stated that she had a headache. “Perhaps you should have Fayth look you over before we have dinner.†She stated. She started looking around Dawn’s room, but found no hidden passages. That didn’t mean they weren’t there though. She would have to inform the Tower Guards about that.

“Is everyone settled in?†the older Aes Sedai asked. Nyssa nodded, preoccupied by the view from Dawn’s window. “You have the most lovely view around, Dawn.†She stated. She could see the Tower Guards scouting around the building. “Do you want to take all of them to Tear?†she asked, nodding to the pair that seemed to be studying a piece of the wall. “That would attract more attention to us than we would like…†the mere thought of going to Tear excited her. They would have to be near invisible if they were to get to boy from his home to this mansion without being seen. “Shall we go to the dining hall then? I suppose we have much to discuss before we depart.â€

Yes, she should talk to Fayth about her headache. They had Yellow Sisters in the mansion, they even had a White among them to talk about things that needed to be taken care of. Dawn eyed Nyssa for a moment and then walked over to the window as Nyssa commented on the view. Two tower guards had started to walk around the gardens. She knew one of them a little better than the other. Sovald, their first meeting had been nothing short of unpleasant. She had been asked to talk to him about the proper conduct and behavior of someone in his position. He had taken it well, but when Finella suggested she ask Sovald to join their party, Dawn had to swallow back some reservations. She did not dislike him, but felt that the man was always on his toes when around her and she hoped she could only bring people she could trust in full. Not someone who seemed to want to hide himself from her, out of a dislike that could only come from their conversation. She wondered why he had agreed to join the party when he looked up and their eyes met for an instant, so she thought.

She moved away from the window and walked over to Nyssa. “Yes, the dining room will be fine. I will ask the other Sisters to join us there.†Nyssa nodded and added that she would go ahead and prepare the room for their meeting. Meaning that she would instruct the servants not to enter and that she would set up wards so they could talk in private. Dawn was glad that Nyssa had joined in the trip, she trusted Nyssa more than she could trust anyone so far. Even Leona, who had chosen the Red Ajah would always be kept in some sort of reserve. She was not Gray, no matter how much she was a part of Dawn she was someone that Dawn was required to keep at a distance. Phaedra Eskarne, a Sitter who had recently returned had spoken to Dawn about her ties outside of the Ajah. Telling her it was her business with whom she associated herself, as long her judgment was clear and her mind free of bias. Dawn had felt to defend her actions, her relations if you will but had sought understanding instead and Phaedra had rewarded that by giving her the leadership over this trip to Aringill.

Dawn readied herself by changing out of her riding dress and instead choosing a light gray dress that revealed her shoulders. Her hair was tied in a bundle for traveling, she now brushed it and made the curls dance over her skin. The little effort it took to change her appearance had a good effect on her mood, she was happy to feel more like herself again. Then it was time to find the other Sisters and ask them to join her and Nyssa in the dining hall. She found Deiria in her room, writing and simply stated her request with a smile, then closed the White’s door only to find she had no idea where the Yellows had taken up residence. She walked back to her door and then to the door adjacent, not the one Nyssa had but probably one used by a Sister. She opened the door to find a room that looked occupied, but whose occupant seemed not to be present. She wanted to step back when her eye caught a small dagger, could this be a Yellow Sister’s room?

Even though she knew it was wrong, Dawn stepped in curiously and looked around to find a dark cloak hanging on a peg on the wall. This was the room of one of the Tower Guards. She took a step back when she realized she was trespassing and heard footsteps on the hallway. Quickly did she close the door, took a deep breathe and then hurried down to the dining hall. She felt a little embarrassed, as Nyssa would laugh at her in her face if she found out her old mentor’s hesitance in snooping. Dawn’s cheeks were crimson red as she appeared in the dining room, Nyssa was already there and smiled at her. “There you are,†she said and pointed at the table that was covered in delicious food and drinks. The servants had gone out of their way to make the room more comfortable with candles lit on the walls, wine and food served on the table. Dawn looked around and said, “The others should be here soon,†then let her finger run over the table as she looked for a seat to take. It was not a difficult choice, but her mind was still racing over the occupant in the room next to her own. And how Nyssa had entered through the hidden door, those two facts combined made for a new kind of worry to appear in the Gray’s mind. She quickly filled a cup of wine for herself and Nyssa and took a large swig before she said, “We should discuss what will happen once Derek gets here,†when a servant appeared in the doorway.

“A letter has come for you Aes Sedai,†she said and left a brown piece of parchment with a seal both Grays knew very well on the table. She hurried off and Dawn stared for a moment at Nyssa before she walked over to the note and opened it. It said what they had been waiting for, that their presence was expected the next day before sunset. She smiled a weary smile at Nyssa and said, “We shall make this a short meeting and finalize our plans to leave come morning. Who shall we bring with us? I am hesitant to attract notice, but I do see the need in bringin at least one or two of the guards. We cannot let this visit into Tear fail because we got attacked on the way. And maybe we need the strong arm to keep Derek from running off.†She tapped her lip but could not hear Nyssa’s reply, as Deiria and the two Yellow Sisters entered the dining room. The three Aes Sedai started to talk and ask questions of their own, stating how lovely the table looked and took their seats. Dawn waited for everyone to be seated, before she addressed the group and said that she and Nyssa would be leaving the next morning for Tear. “Derek Hearne will arrive with us the day after tomorrow, I hope we can be here around noon. What preparations do you need to take?†she addressed this question specifically to the Yellow Aes Sedai and sipped on her wine. A lot would happen in these two days and now was the time to prepare. Her nerves calmed with the spiced wine and she relaxed, knowing that they had enough time ahead of them and enough preparation behind them to make this into a success.

Deiria unmounted the horse and gave the reins to the stable boy. The boy looked more scared than suprised - perhaps soo many Aes Sedai at the same place was too much for him. Probably he had never seen one before. Long riding was something Deiria never enjoyed, now, it felt so good to stand on the ground and walk. It was also very exciting to be away from the Tower, she had not really travelled before entering the Tower or during the years as novice and accepted. Even after raising, she had not had any chance to travel! She had received this the task from a white sitter, Adrai Tynin. Deiria had had troubles to be calm when she had received an invitation 'to discuss' to Adrai's room. And the suprise was even bigger when she asked - well - ordered her to join this campaign. Adrai herself was of cource bound to the Hall and could not leave the Tower for a long time, that would lead to gossiping among the sisters; besides Deiria didn't have a ageless look yet which was a bonus when dealing this kind of matter. Adrai had told her everything she needed to know, and the rest she would hear from the Grays - if they wished to tell. Deiria looked eagerly around, she saw the party she had travelled with unmounted and ready to get started. At the begining the journey they had been discussing a lot and it was a great opportunity to get to know other Sisters - that Deiria didn't want to miss, she was newly raised and didn't know many sister beforehand. The knowledge was important, but you didn't have to know everything if you knew the right people. She had even tried to discuss with two Tower Guards: Solvald and Corin, but without any success. They were simply doing their duty and without too much talk. Even the journey had started everyone discussing, little by little they all fell in to the silence afterawhile, and in a way, it was pleasant. Deiria had to think about the matter and even discussing was important too, she needed silence to think properly.

The room she received was fine with a lovely view to the well maintened garden: wide bed with bedposts and embroidery bedcover, also same embroidery figures in the heavy curtains. It was looking very beautifull - if you happened to like embroidery, Deiria didn't. A servant brought her baggage to the room and started to unpack. All her clothes and things went in to a huge carved wardrobe and to a small chest. Even her shawl had been folded neatly and put to the wardrobe. Deiria sighed, she probably didn't need it and should have left it to the Tower. But it felt too strange to leave it behind, like she would never have it anymore, if she had left it. Deiria knew it was stupid, but in time she didn't have those thoughts anymore, she hoped. Deiria waited impatiently that the servant had done everything she was suppose to do and had left the room. Then she lay on the bed: light she was tired. But it was not the time for beautysleep. After a short moment, she stood up, warmed the water in the pitcher and washed her face. Then she changed her riding dress to more comfortable silk dress. It was ivory white, simple but elegant. Not too decorative, but not really modest either. It was one of the favorite dresses, and she wanted to feel comfortable. She was around strange people in a strange place doing a strange task - but this was what she had been trained for years: Aes Sedai plotting. The thought made her laugh and she did so aloud. But, she was not completely surrounded by strangers, Dawn Raelene, her friend from the novice times was involved this too. She had a huge role dealing with this matter, or so Deiria had reasoned out already. But she didn't know for sure.

Now that she was settled, she had a task to do. Adrai had been very strict and demanded that she had to report everything to other whites. Every word spoken, every smile taken, well, perhaps not that detailed, but Deiria got the point. She needed to write down the discussion she had had with others. She had to do it now, or else she would forget everything. She sat down beside the writing desk and took a small box from her belongings. The box contained fine white tower paper, a pen and some ink. Some of the papers had already some writing, but now Deiria took an empty one. She recalled what was said during the ride, and wrote everything down as good as she could. Some bits of it had already faded somewhere beyond her memory. Suddenly the door opened, it was Dawn. She announced smiling to her that they should meet in the Dining room. After that, she closed the door and Deiria turned her attention back to her notes. Once everything was written down, she put the notes and the pen and the ink to the box, closed it and locked it with a small but rather complicated lock. She didn't have a key, actually she had destroyed it, so she used saidar to slid the bolt to it's locked position and set a simple ward to the box. She knew if someone tried to open the box, or even touched the lock.

Then she hurried to the dining room, and yes, she was hungry. She trully hoped they had something to eat. More than tea and cookies! Deiria didn't have to dissappoint. She could smell the delicious food even before entering the room. Deiria stepped the room, as well as two yellows. They seated themselves and started to chat merrily. They all were hungry and so delighted to have something so delicious to eat. Finally everyone's wait was rewared. Dawn started it by annoucing that the Tairen boy, Derek Haerne, would arrive within two day. She opened the discussion by asking what preparations needed to take. Deiria assumed that the question was addressed to the yellows, so even she had few thoughts in her mind, she waited what the yellows would answer....

Life, the most precious gift one was given and the most important thing to protect. Fayth wandered through the garden around the mansion alone, wondering when she could put her talent to use. Maybe one of the stable boys needed her attention, she walked down the path and found two stable boys rubbing down their horses. They both looked up and greeted her, then set back to work again. Fayth looked slightly disappointed and then retreated again. She knew that she had to prepare for when the boy would come to Aringill, but there was so much she did not yet know. How could she prepare for a disease she had not actually heard of, seen before or had any knowledge of? She smiled wearily as the servant opened the door for her. Back in the corridor she found herself alone and worrying, this was no good.

A small door led down a dark isle and there was another door again. This house was like a maze, the Yellow thought. She found herself in a room that held wall to wall bookcases. “The library,†she said and made a decision. She would see what knowledge on Healing and herbs she could find here. Nemeira would appreciate if Fayth had already started to browse through the library. Thinking about that, Fayth realized she had not told the other Yellow where she was off to. Maybe her Sister wanted to talk to her about the role they were to play. Then again, they had talked for many hours before they left for Aringill and on the road as well. Fayth did not believe that in this case there were many Ajah secrets to break, so she was easily approached by the other Sisters on how she thought to cure Derek Hearne. Nyssa had spoken to her a few nights before, the Gray seemed particularly interested in what Fayth could do, while the Yellow depended more on Nemeira when it came to the hard decisions.

Fayth was a healer pur sang, she loved to work on helping people who got hurt. Help them through the hard times of dealing with pain and disease, but to actually cure something that was new to them was very new to Fayth. Lwena and Desandre had asked her on many occasion to study more in the new healing, but Fayth often took over the tasks in the Infirmary, leaving her little room to study. Sisters like Ata Sedai often did more with trying out new herbs and finding new meaning to Healing. After an hour, Fayth got bored from browsing through the books and wondered how anyone could enjoy such a large library. She did not need this many books really, she preferred to talk to people and then find out what it was that hurt them. Back on the floor she occupied she found Nemeira when Dawn Sedai, one of the Grays, came by to ask them to join them in the in dining room. She looked somewhat flushed and Fayth pondered over a cure for stress, with all that hung on this visit to Tear, she imagined the two Grays would need it.

They were led into the dining room and Fayth’s stomach enjoyed the scent of the good food, as she did. She sat down next to Nemeira and looked up surprised as Dawn asked her and the other Yellow what they expected to do with Derek. She stated a very simple reply, “We shall not know until we have him here Dawn,†then shrugged and took a sip of her own wine. Maybe Nemeira had ideas formed, but Fayth liked to eat now and worry about Derek later. He was not here yet and she did not even know when he would get here. That was a concern she felt should be addressed first.

Lewin was in a foul mood. It wasn't the weather, or the time of year. It was not even the company he was keeping. Lewin strangly enough found Aes Sedai amusing to be around. The other four Tower Guards charged with keeping the Sedai safe, Corin, Sovald, Aidan and Christopher were well trained and competent, good men to share a drink with.

It was the mansion where Aes Sedai had chosen to stay. Not only was it far to large for five men to guard, even warriors of their proficiency, but the house was built in a fashion that gave Lewin fits. He was sure that it had secret passages and compartments hidden through out it. The very thought made him uneasy that someone could sneak in and throughout the building without being seen. Lewin swore a long series of curses as began searching through the floor that the Sedai has appropriated. The doors were all locked. No suprise, Aes Sedai guarded their privacy very carefully.

Glancing around and realizing that he would probably catch some sort of punishment for what he was about to do, Lewin pulled a small leather packet from a pouch and pulled two long thin wires from it. Closing the door quietly, Lewin quickly efficiently began examining the walls and other crevices.

Less than three quarters of an hour later Lewin stepped out of the last Sedai's room, hopefully the sisters were still at dinner. A few objects had been moved on desks and such, but mostly he thought everything was close enough to the way it had been.

Continuing his long stream of cursing, Lewin double checked that all the sisters doors were locked again then began his monotonous inspection of the rest of the bloody mansion.

Slowly Corin made his way up the flights of stairs to the top, why he had been cursed with the utmost floor for a room he did not know. Though his hunch told him it was because he held the lowest stature amongst the guards present. He would probably find himself answering to all of them at one point or another in this trip. It was something that came with being the one with the least time in service. As he turned the corner at the top life got even better. His room was stationed right at the top of the stairs. If nothing else he should know exactly when someone comes and goes from the floor.

Swinging the door open he looked at the room. It was far too spacious for his needs and too lavish compared to what he was use to, but it would do. It would have to, though he hoped he would get assigned for the escort to tear. More countryside to see for a man of little travel. Besides it would mean he would be away from this stuffy place. It reminded him too much of the night before he left Tar Valon; the formality of the meeting, a mired of Daes Dae'mar, her. A quite growl escaped from his throat at the thoughts; he picked up his pack from the bed. Pulling forth a fresh tan shirt and dark blue pants he took a moment to wash and change from his trail grim clothes. He had seen Sovald taking up residence with a book near the main entrance so he could afford a moment to clean up. Something he never would have thought much about prior to her teachings in the great game. Now to him appearance had become another weapon. A weapon keen and useful in Daes Dae'mar.

Placing his pack at the foot of the bed without removing the remainder of his clothes in faint hopes of an early departure, he secured his room; a thin frail wisp of string strategically placed to show signs of entrance while he was away. He did not have the ability to place wards as the Sedia's did. But he was quickly learning that there were ways to indicate unwanted visitors. Dealing with them would be a different story altogether. Happy that everything was set and out of sight, he preceded back down stairs to the dinning room. Perhaps there was still some food left from the Sedia gathering.

As he approached the door he could smell the spiced fresh scents of a warm meal waiting inside. He spared a very brief moment to listen for voices before entering in. Before him sat all of the sisters; gathered around the table, eyes pivoting to his location. Guess I should have listened a little longer,he shrugged slightly at the thought and then dropped into a formal bow. "Pardon Sedia, I did not mean to intrude on your meeting. I thought perhaps you had already concluded. If you are still discussing I will depart and leave you your privacy."

The conversation went on for the bigger part of an hour when Dawn heard her stomach grumbling. She was not done, but realized that soon they needed to eat and so she decided to try and wrap up the discussion. They had spoken about what the Yellows could do to prepare for Derek’s arrival and what Dawn and Nyssa could tell the Lord Hearne about the boy’s whereabouts. Deiria had stressed the fact that they should keep a low profile in Tear and Nyssa had then answered that they had taken assumed names and she had shown her disapproval at having to bring any one of the tower guards. Dawn was still thinking about this, she knew that Nyssa was right that the party that went into Tear should be small and not attract anyone’s eyes. Still, her orders were clear and made sense in the bigger scheme of things. What if Derek got into trouble or refused to come along quietly. “We have little choice but to take one of the guards, two at most,†she nodded and heard the door swing open at that. They were not finished talking and her eyes flew over to whoever had entered. He noticed their feelings of intrusion, but it mattered little to the Gray.

“Do enter Corin and take a seat, do you know by any chance if our other guards will join us for supper?†He said they would arrive shortly and Dawn rose to ask the kitchen to serve their dinner. She nodded at Deiria for a moment to join her in there, it was just a minute conversation she felt she needed to have with the White. Deiria took the hint easily and rose from her seat, excusing herself from the table. It seemed Fayth was delighted that dinner would soon arrive, for she proposed a toast on the choice of venue and the delightful scent of the fresh baked bread that was already on the table. Dawn smiled, nodded at the servant and then pulled Deiria down the corridor with her. “I do not wish to say more than a few words dear friend,†she began and started to walk down the corridor. They could take another way into the room and thus make it appear as if they just took a different entrance. It was easy to loose one’s way in a new place and Dawn decided to make use of that. “I think Nyssa and I will leave at first light in the morning. That is, we still need to agree on that but I think it’s best we hurry so that we can return in two days time.†She waited for Deiria to nod in agreement then continued, “I wanted to ask you to keep an eye out for us here, while we are gone. Just see what is going on, if we can trust the servants,†she did not say that it was the other Gray who had put this idea in her head. Nyssa had made a remark about being careful to ward every conversation they had. “In our absence, the Yellow Sisters need to prepare for Derek and may need one or two of the guards to accompany them to the village and get supplies. Maybe your role can be just as great, to see that our trust in this estate is righteous. Once Derek is here, we cannot ensure his safety, we will have to trust who is here and we cannot be on his guard all day and all night. No matter how much I wished we could,†she looked pensive.

Suddenly Deiria’s eyes flashed over Dawn’s shoulder and the Gray realized someone was listening in. Could it be one of the servants who she had just accused in a subtle way. Could Nyssa’s idea be true and would they find out so soon already? Dawn embraced Saidar and turned around to find Sovald Rul standing behind her, looking at them both. She let go of the Source and nodded at him, “We should enter, Corin and the other Sisters are waiting for us.†She gave Deiria a short pinch in her arm, it reminded her of their days as Accepted together, always understanding each other in a few words. Even when Dawn was raised, she never forgot about her friendship with Deiria and she was glad that she was along on this trip. Sovald entered and took his seat. Lewin and Christopher had already taken a seat and the servants were busy filling the large silver dishes with soup and warm foods. Dawn mused over the delicious smells, but could not get herself to eat just yet, why did she keep having that feeling that they were being spied on?

Suddenly she realized that they missed someone, “Where is Aidan?†she asked in general and got the answer that he was doing a guard round over the grounds, to see that the gates were closed. Soon though, he entered the room and sat down on the last free chair. Dawn let her gaze glide over the party at the table and wondered why it was that she felt she had to be on her guard. “Well, let us enjoy our dinner for I believe it might be our last with all of us together. Tomorrow at first light, Nyssa and myself are leaving to get our guest, Derek Hearne,†she waited but nobody spoke up about this. “We shall return in the next three days with him, to see if we cannot help him,†she smiled at Fayth and Nemeira and hoped that the two of them would be able to cure the boy soon. Yet, no doubt shone over her face as she smiled warmly and then started on dinner. "Tell me Corin, have you ever been in these parts?" she asked as small conversations started all around her over supper.

It was very good converstation. Few points was brought up that Deiria had not thought before. She trully could see how inexperienced she was! What a learning experience this was. It was very fruitful to have so many different ajahs discussing together, too often each ajah just considered matters themselves. It was just too narrow-minded. It is only logical to think problems from all possible angles.

Few times during the discussion Deiria had to remind that the ones who go to Tear must not reveal themselves as Aes Sedai. It was more likely that people, even nobles, in Tear did not recognize the ageless face of Aes Sedai when they saw one, but why risk. Sending newly raised sister to Tear would be very wise thing to do. Deiria reminined them to avoid using the Saidar as far as possible, of course there were few "safe" and usable weaves like Ward against eavesdropping. But almost anything else was something that would attract unwanted attention. Taking few Tower Guards with them - a suggestion from Nyssa - was very good. If situation demands fighting, no Saidar but swords must be used in Tear.

Abruptly their discussion was interrupted. One of the Tower Guards, Corin, entered the room. It was expectable that others would also follow him to supper. They must be hungry aswell! So, Dawn said she would go to kitchen to arrange more food to the room. Before she left she gave very subtle sign to Deiria, or did she? She hesitated, but stood up and excused soon after Dawn. She could still help her in the kitchen, or just give her company.

Dawn pulled Deiria to corridor, yes, she did want to say Deiria a word. She had seen Dawn's sign correctly. As they walked down the way they talked. Dawn asked Deiria to watch the place while the small group of them were in Tear. Deiria agreed completely with Dawn. They didn't know the servants afterall and didn't know were they really trustworthy.

"Yes of course. I will watch them like a hawk. I will..." she cut off. She saw suddenly someone standing behind Dawn - 'someone' turned to be Tower Guard Soval Rul. He was rather tall and looked healty with his broad shoulders. His dark eyes didn't reveal anything, but must have been suprised to find two Aes Sedai talkin in the corridor. Dawn embraced the source as she could not see what had scared Deiria, but she released it after seeing the man. After they had returned to the dining room, Deiria could still feel Dawn's pinch in her arm. That pinch made her happy.

Soon after the last Tower Guard joined the group, the murmur filled the room - everyone seemed to be happy and relaxed. It was the last evening before they task fully started. After the night they didn't have much chance to chat and laugh....

- - - - - He had the house well surveyed now, and after a short time, he went back inside. They had said something about dinner.. He walked up the stairs, and looked through And stopped. Things looked... different. Someone had already been in here. At least one person. His eyes travelled 'round, looking for signs. Carefully, his hands probed around. Interesting. But there, in the faint glimmering of sunlight, something sparkled enough to catch his eye. He moved closer... a blond hair. He picked it up, and a thought occured to him. Her? He had encountered her before, and on less than good terms, but he was on this trip! Did she still not trust him? Was he so little thought of that she needed to inspect his room? He carefully pocketed the long blond hair, then set his book down, and headed off towards the dining room. When he entered, Corin was already there, chatting with the Sedai. But Dawn was not in the room. Sovald kept walking, down the next corridor... and he began to hear voices.

- - - - - “I think Nyssa and I will leave at first light in the morning." That was Dawn Sedai. He could see them now, walking up ahead. But did they see him? "That is, we still need to agree on that but I think it’s best we hurry so that we can return in two days time.†A pause, and Sovald stopped short. They still didn't see him... “I wanted to ask you to keep an eye out for us here, while we are gone. Just see what is going on, if we can trust the servants.†His eyes flared -- she would tell another sister, but not a Guard who's duty it was to protect her! No matter how much I wished we could..†Then, the White had turned enough, and her eyes flashed at Sovald. His head inched down, just enough to be in a more waiting posture. Dawn turned quickly... expectantly? When she realized who it was, she seemed almost disappointed. Her nod was short and curt. “We should enter, Corin and the other Sisters are waiting for us.†Sovald bowed silently, then turned and went the other way. All the while thinking about what he had heard.

- - - - - He sat at the table thinking, blocking most everything else out, until everyone was there. Then he looked up for long enough to hear Dawn's words. “Well, let us enjoy our dinner for I believe it might be our last with all of us together. Tomorrow at first light, Nyssa and myself are leaving to get our guest, Derek Hearne. We shall return in the next three days with him, to see if we cannot help him.†He refrained from opening his mouth right away. He would talk to her later -- they would most certainly have a Guard escort -- and, as the highest ranking Guard, Sovald had to be one of them. On a two day trip with Dawn Sedai. He lapsed into thinking, letting the Sedai and other Guards chat back and forth, staying silent himelf, slowly eating.

Fayth was tired, her days were usually long when working in the Infirmary, but she was not used to riding a horse for long and now, with the wine, the food, the warm and soft pillowed bed awaiting her, she felt tired. A deep sigh rolled from her lips and she smiled almost wickedly before saying, “I am not too sure about the rest of you, but I am off to sleep before I fall over in my chair,†she had eaten a lovely dinner and had chatted merrily with Nemeira and Dawn. The Gray was somehow more relaxed once she had all the official stuff behind her. Fayth looked up over the table, gave Nyssa a curt smile and realize she had hardly spoken with the Gray since they left the Tower. Though Nyssa did not visit often, as not many Sisters did, when they were in conversation, Fayth never felt out of words. It was a special type, her height putting her somehow above any debate, almost physically. Fayth had thought about doing a study on the effects of one’s physical attributes in work related situations, but maybe this trip was not the right time for that. She was after all supposed to find a cure for Derek Hearne, once he got there. “Since I shan’t be getting up at sunrise, I wish you a safe trip Dawn and Nyssa,†she said before departing the room and going up the stairs to find her bed.

Dawn looked up as the Yellow Sister suddenly announced her retirement, she smiled up at the woman as she left and thanked her for her kind words, not soon after though Dawn decided to retire herself. She was not planning on sleeping just yet, but maybe with the servants off to their quarters she could spend some time in solitude, to think things over. She gave a nod at the party at the table before bidding them goodnight and slipping out the door and up to her own room. A black cloak with a large hood on it lay on her chair, as if ready for this moment. Dawn slipped it over her shoulders and placed the hood over her head, then headed out of the mansion through a door near the kitchen.

The moon had just come up, a half a moon just now and a cloud moved over it to hide it from her view. Her dark blue eyes ventured over the garden that lay ahead and Dawn took a stroll past dark green bush and light green patches of grass. She stopped to pick up a twig and studied it as her mind worked over the ideas she had formed over dinner. As she moved on, she threw the twig off and let it soar over the night sky, then land near a tree stump. Turning on her heel she heard someone near, nobody was there but a gust of wind that lifted the mantle for a bit, only to leave her in her own silent solitude.

“What to do,†she said to herself and pondered over the idea of Derek Hearne’s illness, or rather the way to get him from Tear without anyone finding out. She had discussed it with Nyssa and their plan was solid, yet why did she doubt it now? They would take him along to a retreat where he could rest and study for his future place as Lord Hearne of Tear. It would do for a few weeks, but what if the Yellow Sisters took longer than that, Nyssa had been bold to say that they would cross that bridge when they got to it. But Dawn could tell her Gray Sister had pondered over that same idea, it sent a cold shiver down her back to think that the two of them had after weeks of preparation still not come up with a solid plan to buy the Yellow Sisters time for their work of Healing.

She leaned against a tree, placing her hand on the bark and feeling the rough texture under her fingers. “A rough exterior, something to break through… to teach and lead maybe,†she mused as she almost seemed to pat it. Then moved her hand away and took another few steps. To keep walking was to keep her thoughts flowing in the same pace, not willing to shut them down just yet, not willing to retire to her chamber where she knew only sleepless hours and little rest waited for her. Yet after an hour’s long walk, Dawn decided the night’s chill was more of a threat to her health than the little hours left of the night she had to sleep. Once the sun came up, she and Nyssa would be off to Tear and off to find Derek Hearne and see if their plan would work. It had better.

Dawn moved back towards the manor, thinking to pay a visit to Nyssa's room if the woman had not gone to bed already. They needed to decide on a few last details Dawn knew could wait until morning, but it just felt more comfortable to have it all arranged now. She also hoped that with the morning would come a clear head, less troubles and worries but knew there was little chance of that. A sigh envelopped her and she closed her eyes, brushing a stray hair from her face. When she opened them again someone stood in front of her, watching her pensively and calm. She gasped and reached out for the Source when he stepped out of the shadow to meet her gaze. "You like to sneak up on Aes Sedai, do you? Or do you just favor me out?"

- - - - - The dinner was a long one, the group thoroughly engrossed in their conversations -- much as they were on the trip here. While they talked, Sovald went over a mental list, determining the duties he had for tonight, to finish securing the mansion. As well, he made sure that he had the exact layout of the mansion memorized, and planned to check for any.... eccentricities in the architecture. He wouldn't be too surprised if there was -- this was a mansion, after all, and owners of a mansion would know that they might need a quick escape route. He barely paid attention to their conversation -- he had no interest in their discussion. It was mundane things that they were talking about -- gossip and such. Sovald needed to talk with Dawn regarding the trip, but now was neither the time nor the place. So he bided his time, leaving politely when it was done. He hadn't paid any attention to the food, and he slipped away to his room upstairs, continuing his survey of it. Indeed, he found several suspicious locations in the wall, but now was not the time to test it -- no need to raise suspicions by slipping around in the walls

- - - - - He went to serve a shift at the gate -- duty that took several hours, in which he got some solid reading done. Only then, when Christopher relieved him, was he able to put his cloak about his shoulders, and head out into the forest.

- - - - - The night was nice and crisp, the air having a faint chill to it. Sovald moved softly, listening to the song of the forest. It was beautiful tonight -- it was times like this, when he felt happiest, when his heart soared. Although this was not Shienar, it still was pretty enough, and he sighed. A faint crackle of movement sparked his ears, and he turned slowly, his eyes piercing out into the darkness. Listening carefully to the sound of both the footfalls, and the sound of cloth rustling. A person. He moved closer, until he could detect an identity. He smiled slightly when he did. Dawn Sedai. He had been meaning to talk to her -- a talk he dreaded, given their history. He waited until he thought her eyes were closed, then moved in front of her, meeting her gaze as her eyes flashed open. "You like to sneak up on Aes Sedai, do you? Or do you just favor me out?" Still that cutting voice -- he wasn't about to bring up her sneaking just yet.

- - - - - "Aes Sedai, these woods may be dangerous. It would not be well for you to get yourself injured out here at night." He bowed his head. "As it so happens, I desire to speak with you though, regarding your mission tomorrow morning. As the ranking Guard, it is my duty to insure your safety. I cannot allow you to go at it alone. I must insist that I at least am allowed to accompany you." He cleared his throat. It was not wise to make demands of an Aes Sedai, yet here he was...

***

As he spoke, Dawn listened with only half an ear, she had an eery feeling he had been following her. Had she not heard something before? Then he said something about her injuring herself and she hid a stiff grin. What was he thinking? That just because she had not whipped a slash of air or used a burst of Earth on him, she could not use Saidar to protect herself? Dawn was suddenly very tired of this male idea that a woman who has no knowledge of how to wiled a sword is suddenly hopeless and defenseless. It did not help that he strayed the topic off to him protecting her on the way to Tear. Best she get this over with soon, Dawn figured and nodded almost complacently. “Yes, that’s fine, do join us at sunrise,†she said and then heard him talk on about how it was his duty to ensure her safety. As he was a ranking guard and it did not stop there, Dawn merely stared at him, ready to move on as soon as he took a breath.

“I must insist that I at least am allowed to accompany you.†Dawn nodded at this statement, he looked at her oddly and she said, “That’s fine, as I just said. Take one of the other guards along as well and ask that the three who remain watch over the manor and help the Sisters in the preparation for our return.†She tilted her head, waiting almost impatiently for his response and when none came she started to walk towards the manor again. He turned on his heel and seemed ready to follow her, so Dawn stopped and waited for him to pass. It looked odd somehow as he seemed to have stopped for her now. Maybe in a graceful manor, much like his demand to protect her as part of his duty. “Care to escort me up to my quarters?†she asked, realizing his own were adjacent to hers. She had found that out in a bit of an indecent entering of his room and suddenly felt very bad about that. She could not understand why she felt like being gone from him so soon, he had not done anything wrong and had only told her that he would accompany her and Nyssa into Tear.

“We have taken on assumed names,†Dawn suddenly said as they walked up through the garden. She stopped and gestured for him to do the same, then embraced the source and weaved an Eavesdropping Ward around the two of them. “I am to be referred to as Lady Naomi Herald and Nyssa is to be referred to as Athena Malakai,†she was not sure if Nyssa had thought out her role on the trip. Dawn had decided that as someone referred to as noble, she would have easier access throughout Tear, which was a land that thrived on titles and nobility, where it hated Aes Sedai and the likes of them. Sovald only nodded at this information, so Dawn drove her point home by saying, “We should all assume that whoever we meet is a threat to us, someone who can spoil our plans and ruin it for Lord Hearne. So by all means, take on an assumed name and do not forget to look well to do,†she arched an eyebrow here, wondering if he would have the appropriate costume for this. “Is there anything we have not thought of yet, something we should take into account?†She gestured with her hand and then added, “It’s safe to speak, none can hear you but me,†and smiled at that.

***

- - - - - Her answer was most unexpected. “That’s fine, as I just said. Take one of the other guards along as well and ask that the three who remain watch over the manor and help the Sisters in the preparation for our return.†That wasn't at all what he had thought. He had presumed he would have needed to discuss and argue, convince her of the matter. But she herself had proposed taking another... or was that because she did not trust him? That might be it.. He focused on her, only to see her starting at him, with a tilted head, before she turned, and began walking again. Slowly he turned on his heel, watching her as she started to go. Then, she stopped all of a sudden. He stopped again, waiting for her... it was almost as if they were children playing a game. “Care to escort me up to my quarters?†He slipped effortlessly to the Flame. If he had not, he would have begun to gag, he didn't doubt. At the very least, his face would have went red -- but then, it was dark out. Maybe she wouldn't have noticed. But she was waiting for an answer -- she was not being sarcastic!

- - - - - He bowed low to her. "It would be my honor and privlege.... Dawn Sedai." That was a gamble on his part -- after his past dealings with her, he had to be on her toes. But she took it in course, continuing walking as if nothing was wrong.

- - - - - “We have taken on assumed names.†Then, she pulled short again, and motioned at him. Curious, he stopped. Her hands moved quickly, and then she began speaking again. "I am to be referred to as Lady Naomi Herald and Nyssa is to be referred to as Athena Malakai.†Sovald nodded, absorbing this in. “We should all assume that whoever we meet is a threat to us, someone who can spoil our plans and ruin it for Lord Hearne. So by all means, take on an assumed name and do not forget to look well to do.†Well-to-do?! He was a Guard, not a doll! What did this area consider well to do? “Is there anything we have not thought of yet, something we should take into account?" She reached out, gesturing again. “It’s safe to speak, no one can hear you but me.†He nearly shuddered again. The Power was in the air. He couldn't recall knowing it was active this close to him before.

- - - - - He looked at her carefully. "And what exactly are the high fashions of this land? In my capacity as Guard, it has rarely been necessary for me to dress as a noble." He felt... hesistant. Here he was, speaking with a woman late at night in the gardens, who had reprimanded him, snuck into his room, and still was very attractive. And he was asking her about how to dress. The situation was more than slightly odd. "Is such a thing truly necessary? I mean, why can I not simply serve my duty, as a Guard? After all, you are a noble... Would not such a person have an escort?"

***

Dawn waited, Sovald seemed somewhat off balance by what she had said and the Gray wondered what it could have been. It would do neither of them any good if he kept getting insulted by her. She thought about the time he had come to her quarters to talk about some rule he had broken. She could not remember understanding him them, just that he seemed to take everything she said with a sullen face, only to leave in silence afterwards. It would be difficult to take him along if he could not react to what she said, maybe he disliked her so much he did not dare be alone with her too long? Dawn’s mind started to race over an endless amount of possibilities, one worse than the next when suddenly he broke the silence by asking her about the proper fashion for Tear.

She was taken aback a bit, had expected him to be angry at her for asking him that he listen to her advice, then give his own but instead he asked for help. She nodded slowly, trying to come up with an answer when he startled her by asking after the necessity. He did raise a good point, but Dawn wondered if he would accept if she told him as much. This was a difficult man, she could now tell for sure. Sovald Rul would accompany them on the trip and so far she had imagined Derek Hearne to be her biggest worry, maybe now this man was. “I think that even guards in Tear look like royalty when escorting a Lady and I ask that you show up in your best velvet. I know we have not got any more time to prepare,

- - - - He watched her carefully, trying to get an idea of what she thought. She nodded slowly, no doubt thinking something over. “I think that even guards in Tear look like royalty when escorting a Lady and I ask that you show up in your best velvet. I know we have not got any more time to prepare, had I known you were coming to join us into Tear, I would have arranged for proper clothing in Tar Valon.†Then, she pulled back slightly, biting her lip. Had she said something wrong? She certainly looked like she felt she had. He ran over her words again in his mind. Maybe she was hoping he would not go with them -- or maybe she hadn't meant for him to find out. Perhaps she doubted his committment to duty -- his past dogging him still. He stood there, waiting, watching for her. She must have something more to say. “I shall join you to your room, we shall go through your wardrobe to pick something out for you.†He had to refrain from doing anything drastic. Not only had she went through his room, now she proposed to go through his clothes, and dress him! Nevermind that he needed it, the audacity of such a thing astounded him. Or was she being forward? He could never really tell with women... Her tone softened even more, to almost what Sovald would consider dangerous. Not quite a touch of caring... “We could also do that before we leave, it will not take long I’m sure. In the worst case, you can borrow something from the other men.†Then, she put a hand over her mouth, eyes going wide. Indeed. How did she know the other men's wardrobes already?! What was this Sedai up to? She looked back at him, a soft smile on her face, not at all smug.

- - - - - He nibbled on his lip softly. What could he say to that? He had insisted on going with her -- but he hadn't anticipated needing velvet, or royal garb. "As you wish, Dawn Sedai." Make it hers, not his decision. "If you will follow me..." He bowed to her again, then waited as she.... did something, no doubt with the Power. He felt the silent shudder go through him. Then, he escorted her slowly back to the mansion, keeping his mouth shut, his eyes to himself, stopping only to hold the doors. Up the stairs... Taking a torch, he lit a lamp and a candle in his room, then replaced the torch, and bowed to Dawn. "Enter, and be welcome." He pointed to the closet. "What little I have brought is in there. I am afraid I did not pack with royalty in mind."

***

Did he really expect her to take out his clothes and go rummage through them? Dawn took a step inside, on her guard and watching his every move as she was not sure what she was even doing here. Yet, what was the real harm in being in his room and talking about an outfit that he had to wear to blend in. She had to think of the mission at hand, to get Derek Hearne and not attract notice to themselves. Enter and be welcome, he had said, was that meant in jest? Dawn was not sure and cautioned herself as she took a step towards the closet. “Well, show me what you had in mind to wear,†she waited and saw how he struggled slightly. “I can leave the room,†she said and broke into a nervous grin. This was odd, why was she grinning now?

She coughed behind her hand to break the silence and then said, “Maybe I should just go to my room, I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable,†she bit her lip and searched for words to make it seem perfectly natural that she was there. She was not intruding, just visiting and helping him with his wardrobe.

- - - - - “Well, show me what you had in mind to wear..†She paused, and the look she had was... odd. At the best. “I can leave the room,†she said, her face grinning. Grinning! What did she think he had in mind?! He looked at her, as if unbelieving of what she was saying. She lifted her hand to her mouth, coughing. "Maybe I should just go to my room, I don't want you to feel uncomfortable." She didn't want him to feel uncomfortable? She had invited herself into his room, and the words she was saying... And here she thought he couldn't dress himeself, apparently. Whatever could he do? Maybe it would be best if she left... or maybe not. She was biting at her lip. Maybe she WAS uncomfortable. Or afraid.

- - - - - A thought occured to him. He had brought THAT.... and those closets in the downstairs had a lot of fabric. Just maybe... "You need your rest, as I need mine. The morning will bring what it will." He bowed formally as she left, still looking hesitant. Now, to get to work. He rummaged through his small pack, pulling out a needle and thread. And he needed the cloth... Slipping out the door silently, when enough time had passed, he worked his way down, retrieving the black velvet, then setting to work, scissors in hand, and his hand carefully sewing it together. Long he worked, taking with him down to duty, then back up again. It was not quite morning by the time he was done, but it would have to do. Tired, he laid his head down, his handywork neatly sewn and folded in a small pile as he waited for the dawn, and his mission, to come.

Deiria tried to sleep, but uneasy thoughts bounced in her mind. Maybe she had eaten too much? The pale moon casted dim rays to the room between the embroidery curtains and made everything look a bit eerie. She rose sitting on the side of her bed. She was too restless to sleep, too many thoughts. She should be drop dead tired after this kind of day but she was not. Maybe she was too tired to sleep? Or maybe she was worried for the sisters going to Tear or for the sisters staying in the manor? Maybe the servants were not that trustworthy that they had thought. And how far she could trust sisters and guards? Every ajah and every sister had their own goals, even when working together. One thing was sure, she knew: someone had tried to open the box containg her notes. She didn't know whether it was tried open with saidar or with a picklock, nevertheless someone had touched the box. Very alarming...it could have been almost anyone during the evening. She had felt the tingle of the ward just after leaving the dining room. She had been the last one to leave, because she wanted to say a word to the servants who cleaned the dining room just to get the feeling about them. So, she knew that those two servants were not the ones trying her notes box. But there were plenty of other suspects too, not even a sister was beyond spying if it fits to her plans.

Maybe fresh air would help her to get some sleep? Deiria wore a long robe and stepped to the small balcony of her room. Oh, the weather was a bit too chilling to her, but everyhting looked so beautiful in he light of half-moon. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then she just listened and enjoyed the moment. Very calming. Just before she turned away she saw a movent in the corner of her eye. So, she stopped to look down. It was Dawn and Sovald talking. She didn't get quite good look about their faces and she could not hear what they talked, but sitll, there were something odd how they talked to each others. She just could not locate it to anything she knew, the again, she did have very little knowledge of human nature. She might have not even notice them unless Dawn had not hold the Source. Why did she do that? Was she uneasy with the man? She supressed the desire to listen what they were talking by useing saidar, Dawn certainly would notice that. But just after Deiria had noticed the couple, they moved, together, toward the mansion and beyond Deiria's sight. Oh, she wished she had seen their faces properly. Could she trust Dawn, she was her friend but far she could count on that. And Deiria didn't know Sovald at all. Light, what she was thingking? This mansion and its atmosphere had terrible effect on her, hopefully she was the only one that was becoming over-suspicious. Deiria sighed, the moment in the balcony hadn't helped her to get some sleep....

Sleepless in Aringill

t seemed that all forces were working against them on the day of departure. Dawn woke up, stumbling over to a window a bit sleepy as she heard a loud crack from outside. A tree branch had broken off from the wind that hit it and a showering rain made everything look dark gray, nearly black. She sighed deep and started to rummage through her wardrobe for some warm clothes. No matter what weather type they had to face, they would be leaving today as the boy needed to be here as soon possible. She sent out word through the maid to Nyssa and Sovald that they prepare, wondering who the other guard would be but assuming that she would find out soon enough. Her hair she put in a thick braid and with a warm vest over a woolen blue dress she knew she was dressed warm enough to face a day on horseback through the rain. Her cloak laid ready over her packed saddle bags and now it was time for a light breakfast.

She opened the door to find Nyssa readying herself in the corridor, “I was just coming up to meet you,†the other Gray said and Dawn smiled warmly. “We should have breakfast and then leave soon,†Dawn suggested. Nyssa nodded, a hint of a sour smile as she too had noticed the bad weather. The stable boy came to collect their saddle bags soon after they had finished their breakfast and the two Sedai went down behind him talking about the mission at hand. “Maybe we can rest early today and go ahead earlier tomorrow, the rain can break us if we’re not careful,†Dawn realized she was biting her lip and then noticed the two guards were already waiting for them. “Good morning,†she said and Nyssa checked that everything was in order while Dawn kept to the side and studied the attire Sovald had chosen to wear. How could he have suggested he had not brought anything, when now he was clad in deep black velvet. She nodded and smiled a greeting at him and said, “Are we ready to go Master Rul?â€

They went off on the horses as the rain showers increased yet again. Dawn was glad that at least the thunder was falling behind them now. But the rain hitting them in the face was not helping to be happy about going to Tear. She pulled the black cloak over her face and leaned in deep behind the horse’s head to try and hide a bit from it. She felt cold shivers run down her back, not from the cold of the weather, but from what they were facing she knew. Why would doubt creep up on her now? Why could she not control herself to be steady, to see what would come and trust that their plans would work out? She looked over at Nyssa who was riding behind her and felt her hands slip from the reins. She clutched them and sighed, not able to see where the others were exactly she trusted that they were still close. She could hear the hooves clatter and the rain hitting on the horses and on their cloaks.

The soft knock at the door had Coring in motion and on his feet before it could swing silently open. Light spilled into the entrance from the hall beyond outlining a man’s shadowy presence. From deep within the shadow Sovald’s voice floated to him. “It’s time, I will need your assistance for their travel.†Corin only nodded to the outline before the door swung silently shut plunging the room in darkness once more. Sinking back to a seated position on the bed he set the dagger in his hand on the table next to the bed while his eyes adjusted once more to the dim light. His ears picked up the constant drone of rain as it lashed the outside of the building; wind rattling the shutters and glass pains. What a lovely day for traveling the bitter thought giving way to the work at hand.

Stifling a yawn, he quickly gathered the clothes he had set out the night before in case he indeed had been selected for the trip. Sliding the only outfit he considered acceptable for meeting with a high house in to the oiled bag, he began to dress in layers. Lightweight brown shirt and tan pants where covered by a green wool shirt and brown breeched. Sliding some additional clothes and supplies in to his bags, he strapped the blade to his side once more and slide the daggers into their various hidden sheaths. Collecting his bag and a plain dark brown cloak oiled to keep the rain at bay, he stopped in front of the closet. Moving a shirt from the top shelf he ran his hand over a covered package. The Red Guard’s cloak tucked safely away, it would have to remain behind for this part of the trip. Everything seemed hinged on their ability to blend, and the cloak would stick out as boldly as the ring the Aes Sedia normally wore.

Offering a silent prayer to the creator for a safe a speedy journey, he placed the shirt back over the package and closed the closet door before spinning and heading out. The halls were still very quiet as most still slept, only the servants preparing the building for its occupants and assisting the party with supplies where at work. He passed a couple lads still rubbing sleep from their eyes as they moved down the stairway and the hall, bags draped over shoulders. No doubt ushering the sisters bags to the horses. Slipping out behind them he made his way through the yard to the stable, his mare already saddled and awaiting him. Indeed for a sleepy mansion there was a great deal of life at this early hour.

Securing the bag to the horse, he swung gently into the saddle and looked over the party. Sovald sat his mount ahead of Dawn and Nyssa, leaving Corin to guard the rear for the start of the journey. He had been told little of the journeys’ plan including it seemed about assumed names, as Dawn addressed Sovald as Master Rul. The best of plans were known to the fewest of people. He assumed he would be told after the party departed leaving prying ears behind. Adjusting the cloak once more to ensure the water ran down the cloak and not down his back he followed the party out into the heavy grey curtain of rain; lighting creating glowing pockets in the clouds intermittently.

Once out on the open road and away from the lights of Aringill, Corin adjusted his pace and position to ensure the sisters remained in sight in the reduced visibility of the rain, yet fare enough back to allow them their privacy. He knew how much Aes Sedia cherished that and found favor on those that realized their need for it. The last thing he needed on this trip was yet another Sedia annoyed at him. All his training to date told him even numbers as they were would make things difficult if a problem arose to keep the sisters safe. It was always a number game. Yet the nature of the mission dictated the even count in an attempt to avoid the problem in the first place. He was only to glad he did not have to make the judgment calls that created this parties size for the task set out. That burden rested on one of their shoulders, he guessed Dawn but with Sedia involved one could never be sure.

The sleep had been light, too light, and she woke up very tired. Before she opened her eyes she listened as the rain hit the window, and wind howl through the trees. She felt pity for the group travelling to Tear, and thanked light she didn't need to go with them. Although it would have been interesting. This was the first trip outside the tower since raising, and it would have been great experience to see Tear too, to see the stone and witness the stories of it.

Deiria dressed up, and hurried to the Dawn's room. She knocked few times the door, but no-one answered. Deiria opened the door, quietly, and glanced the room. It looked empty and untouched. They had left already? Deiria run to the down to room where they had their breakfast. Maybe she could see Dawn and Nyssa there, and wish luck for them. The trip was not going to be pleasant, but hopefully it was succesful! She stepped into the room the breakfast was served, but, alas, only found Fayth, eating without even noticing Deiria. So, Dawn and Nyssa were already left. Quickly she returned to her room to fetch her cloak. It was raining heavily, and she didn't want to completely wet herself. Even, in case of sickness, there were yellow sisters present. Hoping to find her friend and another Gray sister, she run to the stables, finding it empty. She turned around and looked to every direction, until she saw riders, far far away, and after a moment they were gone.

"Good luck, Dawn and Nyssa" She whispered, and returned to the house.

Despite the cloak the hem of the skirt was wet, but she was too hungry to dry it with the saidar. She let it be, and seated herself, in front of Fayth, opposite side of the table. Before she took a something to eat, she spent a short moment to look at the sister. She was tall, and she had short brown hair. Deiria didn't know her, and had only talked very briefly last night....

OOC: Dawn/Fayth, want to have an idle chat ??

***

A broad yawn, a stretching of her arms and then Fayth felt ready to face the cold of the marble floor and pull her bare feet out from under the blanket. She felt the shiver run up her skin and looked through the window, the curtain was half drawn open and realized a storm was raging outside. Soon the party would leave for Tear and they would have to face that weather, she was suddenly very happy that she had not asked to join them. It seemed that there was something to gain from going to Tear, but she liked the comfort of the mansion and was curious about the men and women who resided. The study of medicine could wait until she had spoken to Nemeira who seemed to be more focused than Fayth could ever be. She blamed Lwena for sending her on this trip and being in everyone’s way, then shrugged and tugged on a couple of stuffed woolen boots. Her nightgown was quickly replaced with a snug fitting warm black skirt and a pale yellow shirt with a warm black vest over it. It looked a bit dark, especially since she had not combed through her hair but she did not care. There was not man to swoop, nor a Sitter to bow to, so she ran a brush through the wildfire on her head and then made it to the breakfast area.

In solitude, Fayth enjoyed hot tea and a bread roll, when someone entered. It was the White Sister they had brought along and Fayth arched an eyebrow upon seeing her, had she not joined the group that went to Tear? Fayth thought that only she and Nemeira were left and smiled as the woman joined the table for her breakfast. Maybe this solitude would be broken after all, she smiled warmly and tapped the plate, which was by now empty. “I enjoyed breakfast here very much, the cook sure knows what she is doing.†Deiria nodded as the plate was placed in front of her by a servant girl who looked sleepy and not yet fully awake. “Can you bring me some more tea, Francine,†she asked the servant who looked up and nodded, “Yes Aes Sedai,†and Fayth turned her glance back to Deiria who had just started to eat. “Did you sleep well, I know I did, finally a warm bed and the wind howling outside made it all the more comfortable to be indoors,†she said with a wink. Then realized the small group that had left through the storm and added in an afterthought, “I do hope the weather will change soon, otherwise I’ll have my work cut out when they return cold and sneezing,†she said and sipped on the warm tea the servant brought her.

Fayth

***

Fayth broke the silence before Deiria had a chance to talk, or think what to talk. She thanked the woman, secretly in her heart. She was sometimes terrible figuring out what to say, and how to start and now Fayth had saved her from the trouble.

"Yes, she surely is very good. Last nights dinner was one proof of her expertise" She replied back, and thanked the serving maid for the tea, cheese, fruits and bread roll she placed before her.

"Oh no, I hardly slept at all" she said and explained further, reasoning the lack of sleep with long riding and rather heavy dinner they had. She didn't mention what she had seen from the balcony. That was not Fayth, and not even Deiria's task to know. She sipped her tea. Yes, she liked lemon in it.

Deiria had to laugh to Fayth's comment about the weather, she was so right.

"Yes, I thanked the light this morning that Dawn and Nyssa didn't ask me to join them. I prefer to be here. It is warm here, and the cook is excellent. I trully hope their journey is succesfull. In the meantime, we can only wait, and get all the preparations done..."

She asked the maid more tea, and another bread roll, light she was hungry. And with no time at all, she had filled her plate and tea cup..

"So tell me. Have you liked your time here? What do you think about the Mansion"

She knew the question was not very good. They had been at the mansion for so little time, but she wanted to hear Fayth's first impression of it. She, herself, had a strange feeling that something was not quite right, and wanted to hear something to prove her own thoughts false. She did know that answer of another sister could not be what you thought (that common folks phrase was so right!), but she wanted hear it, nevertheless...

OOC: Thought I bring in a bit of an adventure Smile

Fayth finished her tea when Deiria asked her what she felt about the Mansion, about their stay there. She simply shrugged and said, “I find the staff helpful and I find the guards we brought along quiet and working hard to keep us safe.†She studied her hands for a moment, the Great Serpent ring she often fumbled with when bored or trying to concentrate on a problem looked a little pale. It needed a good rub, so it would shine once more, she looked up at Deiria who finished breakfast. Such a big appetite, she thought and then smiled, “Why don’t we take a walk around the mansion?†She had not seen much of it yet and when Deiria agreed, she wondered where their trip would take them.

“So far I’ve not been passed my quarters and I’ve taken a glimpse at the Library, surely there should be a parlor of some kind where we can sit and talk,†she said and studied a red wooden door with a silver line going down. It looked stately, even more so than the rest of the house and Fayth wondered about it. Her curiosity took the upper hand and while leading Deiria along, she passed through the corridor and tried the door. At first it did not give way, then she pushed a little harder and found the door opening with a creaking sound. Dust flew up in small clouds as Fayth stepped in and had a good look around the room. It looked old, weary and dusty, she wondered if the staff even bothered to clean here once in a while. Tapping her finger on the wooden shelf next to the door, she found it gray with dust. “Ah, this is so disgusting, we should have someone clean this some time,†she said and took antoher step inside.

Then she noticed the room looked more like her own quarters in the Tower. It had a writing desk, shelves, a large table where one could sit and talk with friends or Sisters. She smiled and said, “This reminds me of the quarters home,†and then realized how easily the word ‘home’ had come from her mouth. She had never needed more than a little bit of furniture, food and people to Heal. Yes, this ddid remind her of home, when Deiria opened another door that led into a bedroom. It looked spacious with a huge double bed, Fayth clasped a hand over her mouth and said, “This looks like the room a Lord would live in, could it be that nobody has lived here since he died,†she turned to Deiria and said, “Do you know who used to occupy this mansion?â€

Fayth Do'Vine

***

Fayth's answer didn't give much, which was expected, but still she felt a slight sting of dissapointment. Deiria finished her breakfast, and tried watch Fayth imperceptibly. She looked very calm, and her face didn't reveal anything unusual, but she toyed her great serpent ring for a moment. Could it mean something? Or was she over-sensitive again?

Deiria accepted gladly her suggestion to see the mansion around. They were suppose to spend here for awhile and it might be useful to get to know where you lived. Fayth had already seen the library, now that sounded interesting. You never knew what kind of treasures you might find, she surely needed to take a look at it. Later. Right now they stood in front of a red wooden door, that looked very old, and very solid. The door looked very tempting, begging opening, but it would not budge. On a second try Deiria gave a hand to Fayth, and the door opened a bit by bit revealing a dark dusty room. Probably no-one had opened the door in ages. Deiria embraced the source and made some light to the room. She had to agree with Fayth that the room needed cleaning: "Yes, we should tell them to take care of this" she sneezde.

The room was obviously someone's study, and yes, it looked very familiar: "This must be someone's study" she repeated her thoughts and looked around:

"Here is another door" she noticed a simple wooden door with simple golden decorations. She opened it, carefully this time to avoid the dust clouds. Behind the door was a bedchamber, yet again untouched for ages.

“Do you know who used to occupy this mansion?†Fayth asked suddenly.

"Oh no, I didn't participate arranging the mansion, and it didn't occure to my mind to ask Dawn." she said regrefully. "these rooms look a bit different than other parts of the mansion - at least compared to the parts we have seen this far. What do you think? Why they left these rooms untouched?"

"Do you know what I think?" said after a few seconds of silence "I think that the personel here is hired just recently. Perhpaps it was the purpose in the begining with, perhaps not. I don't know if that is the truth, but if look at them, they are like they are working in a wrong house. They do not seem to belong here"

Had she gone mad, she asked herself and shivered. Maybe the athmosphere of the house did effect on her too much...

OOC: do you have something spooky in your mind?? If there is anything I need to change, just let me know...

Fayth looked back at Deiria and fumbled with her ring, then released her hand and clenched both hands on either side of her hips. She was not going to let the other woman’s words scare her, even if the White did seem cautious around the room. “I have not noticed much,†she said lightly and wondered what she had noticed herself exactly. Fayth did not pride herself on being very perceptive, often the last to know and now it seemed there was a lot more going on in the mansion than she could ever have known. “Well, maybe we should leave the room for what it is,†she said and was about to step back when the door suddenly fell shut. They heard something and then a soft creaking sound. Deiria moved towards the door, but Fayth was closer and started to pull on the handle. It did not budge and she looked over at Deiria, pale as a sheet while stammering, “I could have sworn I heard someone lock it,†she sighed and stopped pulling on the door, “We’re locked in Deiria,†she said. The other woman looked at the door and then embraced Saidar, Fayth could feel it.

As she studied the lock, she could feel how Deiria was trying to pick apart the lock. Then she noticed a weave she could deduct as trying to melt the lock, “No, don’t melt it, we don’t want to have it known we were snooping,†she said and placed a hand on Deiria’s arm. The White released Saidar and Fayth studied the lock, while embracing Saidar and using a small weave of Air and Fire to make some light. “We should wait for someone to pass by and get us out,†she said when she suddenly heard something. But what if it was the same person who had locked them in? She took a deep breath, then decided this was ridiculous and called, “Help, we’re locked in here!†She stared at Deiria who looked cautious and had embraced Saidar again. They heard someone stumble, then a thump on the door and a voice, “Is there someone in here?†it was a dark voice but Fayth thought she recognized it. “Aidan?†she called towards the door and got no reply. Then the door suddenly budged and they heard a faint, “Stand back,†Deiria pulled Fayth’s arm and the two women jumped back as the door flew in and landed on the ground in front of them. Aidan stood looking at them as if he was prepared for a horde of trollocs, his face seemed clenched in something and he grabbed his shoulder. “Are you alright?†he asked at the same time Fayth asked him that. They smiled at each other and Fayth nodded, “Yes, the door would not open,†she explained and Aidan nodded in understanding. He smiled, “Good, I came by then,†and Fayth nodded.

“Can I help you with that shoulder?†she asked, already preparing a weave to help him but he waved it off, “Just a strain, I’ll be fine,†he said. Fayth looked over at Deiria, “Something fishy is going on here, I can’t believe someone actually locked us in on purpose, but how else did the door fall shut like that, it’s very strange,†she said and then they followed Aidan back to the parlor. He told them he wanted to finish his round, in case other Aes Sedai found themselves trapped in rooms he passed. He meant that as a joke and Fayth could forgive him, she waited until he left the room when she said, “Maybe it was an accident, old house with old hinges in the doors. But maybe…â€and she did not dare finish that thought.

The dust of the room had setled down, and showed their footprints all over. Deiria hold the light above them, but it was not very bright. She didn't want to spoil their eyes! Fayth yet again toyed her ring, it could be only a harmless hobby, or a sign she was troubled by her thoughts. She did deny seeing anything strange, though.

Since she was holding the saidar, Deiria heard something outside the room, but could not locate what it was, something familiar, but she could not pinpint what, and soon the voices were covered by Fayth's suggestion to leave the room. And that instant the door slammed closed behind them, and locked it.

"Yes I heard it locked too" She said still holding the light. Fayth seemed to be scared about the fact and her remark that they were locked didn't lighten the situation. Deiria had always wondered some people who stated the facts everyone knew, and usually made the situation seem worse, like 'it's terrible weather' or 'we are in a trouble'. But she forgave Fayth in her mind. Deiria didn't understand people usually, anyway. Maybe it was her own flaw, not everyone's else's.

"I will try to get us out" Deiria said, released the light, and weaved thin few threads of Earth. She was not very talented with earth, but the weave she knew like her own pockets. She layed the threads on the lock and searched through its mechanics. Yes, she could locate the bolts holding the lock in locked postion, but... it was jammed. Somehow the one who had locked them inside had destroyed the lock as well. She tried to bend the metal inside, bend the bolts to release and to aid it she added thin threads of Fire and started to warm it. But Fayth didn't think that a good idea, and yes she was right. It could leave too visible marks on the lock. And you didn't need brains to see it was a work of the Power. Deiria let go the weaves, and now Fayth lit the lights with saidar. It was much better to see the room you were locked in.

Suddenly they heard voices again outside, this time Fayth yelled help. Deiria didn't know was that a good idea, so wanted to be prepaired if something happened. She hold the source, but released it as soon as she could recognise the person behind the door as Aidan. With in no time, he set them free, but unfortunately the door was broken as well as Aidan's shoulder. To Fayth's dissappointment he refused the healing. Deiria glanced the broken door. Yes, now no-one can notice someone snooping here, she thought ironicly. That thought she kept herself.

After the incident Deiria and Fayth sat comfortably (and free) in the parlor, and discussed. Fayth wanted to believe that it might have been accident, but Deiria had to disagree. She could not see the fact supporting Fayth's believe. She thought it differect, and more she thought about more convince she was.

"Nonsense" she knocked out Fayth suggestions, perhaps even too harshly "I was holding the source - for the light - and so I could hear something outside the door. It was someone, or someones. Ijust cannot think where I have heard that funny voice before" she tapped her chin with her finger.

"Besides the lock was detroyed inside somehow, perhaps it was a trap prepaired in advance - in case sombody snoops the room - and needed only triggering. Or it was destroyed there and then with a tool specialised for it." she paused for a moment before continueing "and that is a fact, and couln't happen by accident"

She thought a moment, and tried to smile encouragingly to Fayth who was still a bit pale and toyed with her ring.

"Don't worry" she said gently "we don't have nothing to be afraid of. I don't think that the one who this did to us, could have known who were inside the room. Think of it: the room was dark, the door almost closed and the person had to act fast. That is our advantage, Fayth. And one thing more, it's was lucky that you didn't let me melt the lock. Now, the person cannot know were the locked ones Aes Sedai, or someone else. " Deiria almost chuckled to the last notion.

"If someone asks, we have been discussing all the morning - which is true - and parlor is excellent place for it - which it also true. We just have to tell Aidan to keep his mouth shut..."

Riding a horse in this kind of weather was hard enough for Nyssa without the added challenge of channelling to keep herself dry, and trying to open the letter Finella had given her. She had been given explicit orders not to open the letter until they left the mansion in Aringill. Nyssa had wondered about that for a while. It seemed that the Gray Sitter didn’t trust the people in the mansion as much as she had told Phaedra she did. Nyssa had tried to be casual under the little secret she was carrying with her. It was always nice to know that you had to keep your eyes open at all times, and that the servants in the mansion couldn’t be trusted.

Dawn rode alongside her as she opened the letter. It almost fell from her hands, and she found herself uttering a few choice world. Next to her Dawn smiled. “One of these days I will learn how to ride a horse properly.†She joked with her former mentor. Finally she managed to open the letter. It’s contents were clear. They were to make their way to Tear as swiftly as possible. Lord Hearne had been informed that they would come to take his son to Aringill, and he had made the proper preparations. His son would be ready to depart.

“Well, that settles that then.†She said. She glanced at Dawn again, who looked about as convinced as she felt. One could never be too sure when dealing with a Tairen lord. Nyssa hoped that Finella’s connection with the man was as strong as she wanted them to believe. Near the Tairen border Nyssa had to stop channelling completely. It was too risky. Besides, in this weather people would notice a pair of woman who seemed to travel on untouched by the rain. They stayed of the main roads as much as possible, to avoid unwanted attention. Not that their small party would draw that many eyes to begin with.

They spent a few nights at various inns, before finally arriving at the edge of Hearne’s lands. Nyssa hoped that they could trust this man. She hoped that he had managed to keep his cousin away from his mansion. She had a lot of hopes and wishes. “Will you do the talking?†She asked Dawn when the mansion came in sight.

~Nyssa

The walls seemed to close in on her, Dawn had never felt more alone than the night she spent in the walls of Lord Hearne’s house. They had gotten two rooms, Nyssa and Dawn shared a room and the tower guards shared a room. Nyssa had fallen asleep quite soon after they had finished talking about the events of the next day, but Dawn sat on the windowsill in her robe and pondered over what was awaiting them. Nyssa would be the quiet back up, but Dawn would have to convince the boy to come with them. The servants would only know that Derek was leaving with two women who would present him to his bride to be. It was actually a custom that Dawn had found so horrid she could hardly believe it. She pulled the soft purple velvet fabric tighter around her and then let her eyes gaze over the sleeping body of her Gray Sister. She was beautiful, calmly breathing in the night, her hair in a braid that laid over the blanket. The old mentor smiled and rose from her seat to her own bed. She took another deep breath and then fell asleep, for she needed to rest even if her mind was still a jumble.

“Lady Herald, can we speak after breakfast,†Lord Hearne basked over the table and Dawn gave a stiff nod. “Of course Lord, we shall,†she did not try to think over all her words. It had to sound natural and it was hard to come off natural when thinking over every little detail. Corin and Sovald were treated like man servants, personal bodyguards to the Lady and her friend. They had not been clear about their roles, Lord Hearne knew they were Aes Sedai but he was the only one. He had wanted it that way and they had not complained. Tear was not a safe place for Aes Sedai and with the minimum guard of only two Tower Guards they had to be extra careful. Right now, Dawn was glad that Sovald had talked her into bringing them along. Yet, she was not quite ready to openly admit that to him just yet. Corin’s glance met hers and she gave him a nod as she rose from the table, it meant so little and yet so much. They would await her orders, but she had none. For now she had to talk to Lord Hearne while she knew her friend would try to meet with Derek Hearne. Because of the boy’s illness he was kept in his quarters most of the time, he only got out for dinner and as they had arrived late the day before, the first time they would meet officially would be that evening.

As the other three left the room, Dawn followed the Lord out to a room adjacent to the dining room where they had all shared breakfast. He closed the door and paced through the room, checking the other two doors, Dawn embraced Saidar and then released it. The walls had ears, she could not use an eavesdropping weave here in Tear, not now. He finally stopped pacing and Dawn remained standing by the window, as far away from any doors as she could get and waited for him to speak. Finally, Lord Hearne raised his face and she thought she saw him blink away a few tears.

“Lady Herald, we both know that is not your real name, but can I call you by it nonetheless,†Dawn nodded. “Naomi Herald,†she merely replied. He raised his voice back to the basking sound and said, “Take good care of my boy Naomi, he must find a wonderful wife, one that will warm his bed at night and bring good offspring to our family,†Dawn studied his face and kept her features smooth. No need to frown on such comments, he was hiding his fear and if there were other listening, this was as good a thing to overhear as anything. They both sat down and Dawn waited again, then looked up at him.

“But of course Lord Hearne,†she said in a high pitched voice, pretending to be in awe of the man in front of her. He frowned then said, in a very low and soft voice, “Do take care of my boy, don’t let anything happen to him,†and Dawn merely nodded. She wished for a way to use a ward when she suddenly heard something at the door. It was a servant, bringing in tea without bothering to knock. The walls have ears, Sedai she thought. They shared tea and talked lightly about what type of wife Derek would want. Then silence fell between them and as they both knew that time had to pass before the match maker could leave the father’s room, it was still hard to count the minutes passing by. Finally Dawn rose and nodded at him, “Thank you for tea,†she said and he rose as well he replied, “Find him a woman he is fond off, one that will warm his heart,†and she nodded. A smile hinted on her lips, but somehow Dawn was too nervous to let it shine through. She wondered about the Lord’s intentions and was suddenly very happy they were leaving again in the morning. That night they would all have dinner and if Nyssa had not succeeded in sneaking in, it would be a first meeting for all of them with Derek Hearne.

***

“Lady Naomi,†Dawn nodded and smiled brightly at Lord Hearne, his eyes shone from the wine he had been drinking and the excitement he felt. She had chosen a light cream-colored dress with a low cut neckline. Perfectly made for a matchmaker, always on the look out for the perfect flirt and the loveliest smile. There was a good intention behind it, she had prepared for this dinner and had made sure to look her best. The soft curls shining with life in the candle light on the table, her eyes seemingly unfocused as she gulped down the wine. Yes, she looked vulnerable and feminine to a tee, just as she and Nyssa had discussed. For they would have to use all their might not to come off as Aes Sedai, but as young women who were going on an adventure with the young Lordling. Finally, Derek Hearne was presented to the table, he was an unsteady looking young man. Gray eyes, small and squinting that looked up at Dawn from under light brown hair. He studied her dress and she could tell from the look of admiration that it had the desired effect. It mattered little how he felt about her from here on after, she was now underestimated and she could see that others around the table visibly relaxed as he sat down across from her. “Lady Herald, it will be my pleasure to join you come morning, at dawn,†Dawn’s eyes flew over his face and a blush appeared on her cheeks. Stupid, stupid to let that word sound like her name, he had no idea and she was not about to ruin it all. So a hand flung over her lips as she moved her lips into a soft smile, “Yes, to me it will be as well,†for some reason she glanced over a familiar face down the table. He was not looking at her, for some reason his eyes were averted from her side of the table. Why had she chosen him to glance at? She was so sure of her dislike for him and yet now she looked at him for a meaningful glance, something to hold on to. Nyssa gave her a soft pinch in her leg, this brought Dawn back to the table. The young Lord was talking about how excited he was to be traveling with such lovely ladies and his father stopped taking in gulps of wine. He relaxed along with the rest of them and Dawn could believe that all would come to a good ending. She gave Nyssa a quick glance and did not allow herself another look at him.

Dawn Sedai

Lady Naomi Herald

((Sov, no idea where this is going, but take it as you like.))

***

- - - - - At least Dawn Sedai didn't remark on what he had. It couldn't be that bad, if she didn't even say anything. Too early was that thought in his mind. "Are we ready to go, Master Rul?" And that smile on her face. Was that smugness? But he had little time for idle thought. It was time to ride. Even in such strange clothes, he strapped his things on Jeade'en, carefully packing his few things in the saddlebags, before mounting up in a single motion. A soft motion, and he led the trot out of the walls of the compound, and down the first path of all the paths and roads they would be taking. The land was wet, from the rain, and it still poured down. A day of the south. Tracking was nothing in this weather, the horses hooves clomping through the mud. It would be a long ride, no doubt, with very little scenery to watch. He turned his mind back, back a few days. Slowly they rode, and he blanked out to the world outside, reciting, instead, in his head, Flanking Tactics in the Aiel War. At least he got to bring his sword. And wear it openly. The weight on his back was quite pleasing. He kept his eyes watching for any potential trouble, of course, And kept a safe distance from the Sedai. That he did. They had to stop at inns along the way, but with a little money and making a point of the title of Lady, they got rooms at the end of the hall every time. The safer for all involved.

- - - - - After several days of that, they finally reached the man's lands who they had come to see. And no major problems. Bandits hadn't been stupid enough to hit them. Quite disappointing, actually. Sovald almost wished for an opportunity to swing his sword, after having to look like 'royalty' for so long. The rooms were lush extravagence, where they waited. Overkill, in Sovald's opinion. Far more than was needed. And he still had to wear those ridiculous clothes. His eyes were still open -- here, most of all, treachery was likely. And here most of all the Sedai were most likely to sneak off. It was a concern to Sovald -- if you couldn't see or hear them, it made it very hard to protect them. Yet they insisted on their closed door meetings, without giving Sovald notice. And he found that out quickly. Escorting Nys.. Athena out from breakfast, he turned, to find that Naomi was missing. He sighed. No use losing them both. Quietly he followed. That woman...

- - - - - At least they would be leaving soon. The sooner they left, the sooner he could change out of these clothes. Sovald grumpily straightened his clothes. A dinner. A formal dinner. Why a simple bodyguard was required to be formal, he still wasn't sure. At least courtesy would demand that Da.. Naomi and Athena would have to stay at the table, and so it would be much easier to keep an eye on them. Sighing, he went out the door, closing it quietly, and slipped down the steps. As he entered the door to the dining room, he saw some servants shirk. He didn't look THAT annoyed, did he? He forced a smile, then entered. Moving to sit, he noticed Dawn Sedai. And had to avoid from staring. A Sedai in that? Diplomacy indeed! Very… feminine. After thinking about it for a second, it did make sense. It was a great way to distract a man, and keep his attention there – disarm him, even. After all, they were dealing with a young man here, who was very unpredictable. The unknown was always unpredictable. He sat down slowly, and his thoughts began to ramble. He sampled his food, not really paying attention. Down the table his eyes strayed.. then he whipped them back. And turned the other direction. She was discussing – he could hear the dialogue going on, and he ignored it generally. His sharp eyes caught her gaze on him... what was she thinking? What was going through that blonde head of hers? And why WAS she staring at him for so long? She gave a little jump, then turned away. And Sovald had to avoid letting out a sigh of relief. He would pay her no extra attention. He would. Quietly he ate, quietly he waited. It should be a hard ride tomorrow. But they had this new one to deal with -- he might slow them down, so Sovald must be extra careful. The boy was under his protection now as well. The sooner they could make it back to the relative safety of the mansion, the better. Let the Sedai wave their hands and do their work. He would keep the bandits away, and the place secure.

***

She and Dawn had split up almost from the very second they had entered the mansion. They had planned this, after all, and if the plans were executed perfectly, then all would be well. Dawn would be working on the alliance with the old Hearne, and Nyssa would make sure that the young Hearne realised that his trip to Aringil was very, very important. It had proven to be quite difficult to draw him away from his inquisitive cousin, but after a few hours she had managed to set up a private meeting with the boy. She had been quite blunt about it, informing the cousin that it was time she found out what kind of material she was working with. She managed to look haughty and flirty at the same time. It was quite perfect.

If only Derek Hearne hadn’t sniggered. Nyssa had arched an eyebrow at him, and scribbled down a few notes in her book, as if she was giving him a negative mark. He had stopped sniggering after that, and the cousin had seemed somewhat impressed by Nyssa’s apparent power over young and silly men. She had of course scolded Derek about that later. “But it’s all so exciting!†he looked sickly, but indeed very excited. She allowed him to rant about it for a while, before she managed to impress the importance of the trip on him. “Death?!†he had almost squealed. She clapped him on the shoulder in a comforting way. “I’m afraid so my boy… There’s nothing we can do here, and if your cousin finds out, things will get quite nasty, and we won’t be able to do anything there either. You know you’re not healthy.†She looked as if she concentrated on his forehead very hard. Then she sighed and looked worried.

“Is it really that bad?!†she had nodded firmly. It wasn’t a lie, of course. From what Finella had said, it really was that bad. “So behave, look excited to meet some lovely young ladies, and don’t even think about mentioning Aes Sedai. That would seriously hamper our operation.†He looked convinced. She left his room, and quietly joined Dawn’s side. She looked worried, but not quite as worried as the old Hearne, who was drinking himself into a stupor. “He’ll be ready to leave by morning.†She whispered to her former mentor. All would be well in the end. If Dawn would keep her attention on the matter at hand, that was. She pinched her sister as she noticed her attention drift of to one of the Tower Guards they had brought. Dawn had the decency to look mildly embarrassed. After a while Nyssa rose from the table. “If the gentlemen will excuse me. I feel the need to prepare myself for our journey in the morrow.†She looked sternly at the young lord. “It would be wise if you did the same, my lord. Women prefer to see their potential husbands without those unflattering bags under their eyes.†Just before she turned to walk away she could see that both Derek and his father looked perfectly flustered. They’d lay of the spiced wine and go to bed early that night. Just as she had hoped.

As Nyssa rose from her seat, Dawn looked up at her face and gave an almost invisible nod. She waited for Lord Hearne to thank them for a lovely evening and then rose from her own chair. Feeling someone’s hand on her back she turned slowly, only to find the Lord standing right behind her. Dawn shivered but held her complexion calm, she was not alone in the room and any sign of odd behavior could ruin everything. “I take it you will find a suiting wife for my boy,†he said and pinched her softly in the arm. Dawn nodded, squinted her eyes and let his eyes wander over the dress she wore. He was drunk, she could smell it on his breath. Suddenly the Gray wanted nothing more than to be gone. She waited, then felt his grip loosen and said, “Goodnight Sir,†at which she pushed herself passed him and hurried out of the door.

Back in her room, Dawn let herself drop in a chair and stared into the darkness. She was not sure of herself, not sure that this was a sound plan and that they would be safe. Something told her that this was not going to be as easy as it all seemed to be. Derek Hearne seemed charmed by both Sisters, Nyssa had gotten through to him, that was good. Dawn changed into her night robe and soon fell asleep, tired as she was from the day behind her. Tired also from what lay ahead, a dreamless sleep of which she awoke quite early and rested gave her the energy she needed. The next morning Dawn put on her dark gray dress with an Andoran high cut, her riding boots and the dark gray cloak she wore on cold days. She had a servant gather the rest of her things and send word to prepare their horses. Lord Hearne did not show himself, which was probably for the better as now they could leave in silence.

Dawn found the guards ready to go a good hour later. When Derek was saddled on one of the horses, complaining of a headache that was probably caused by the wine he had the night before, they took off. Dawn took the rear and stayed close to the boy, readying herself to protect him if harm would come, knowing full well that she had no battle training, nor much knowledge of weapons. They would have to trust that the Wheel would guide them a safe passage to Aringill. She loosened her grip on the reins a bit as the sun appeared on a watery light blue heaven. At least no rain this time, though a cold wind took up soon after they left the city walls. Out on the open road, she ducked in her cloak and was soon lost in thought. The wind blew hard and the group went to ride closer together, the boy in the centre of their little group as he was looking more pale by the minute. Dawn thought about giving him some Healing, but she knew the rules, no channeling in Tear. They should not attract attention and that was more important than his discomfort. A glance over the boy’s face told her he did not agree though.

At first, with their arrival at the mansion finally a reality Corin had been excited to see the place and observe how the Sedia would work their story to secure the boy without suspicion. That joy had been short lived once they were out of the saddle though. With rooms assigned and their belonging stored, the reality of his task as a guard became painfully apparent.

Sovald had talked many times with him about his expectations related to the sisters and tasks that he wanted Corin to look after. That was the easy part, completing those tasks; even attempting to meet the expectations set by his leader on this little adventure turned out to be impossible. The Aes Sedia where worse then children when it came to ensuring their safety.

Within mere moments of arrival they had successfully set Sovald on edge and Corin in a state of utter confusion. â€Ensure they are always kept in sight save for their rooms while we are here,†Sovald’s words still echoing in his head. Oh sure that was easy to say. Athena seemed to make it a goal of her’s to ensure Corin was left standing guard on a vacant room more times they he cared to remember. When she did allow him to be present with her and not try to slip away. He was kept under an air of unspoken threat, any attempt to offer assistance or even concern was met with those confounded raised eyebrows that seemed to be second nature to Sedia.

He just loved the couple of times, while looking for where his charge had once again disappeared to; he had run into Sovald, the look said it all. Hopefully the man forgot before they arrived at the first Inn outside the mansion on the way back or he would probably be in for a lecture. Something he was neither relishing nor believed was rightfully due. But how do you explain that the women would not listen to reason. He was almost shocked when she had actually waited for him at her room door before proceeding to supper. Though the attire she had chosen seemed a bit off for a Sedia, which turned out to be nothing after seeing what Naomi arrived wearing. It had taken a great deal not to let his eyes roam over that display, but the constant reminder that she was a Sedia and his responsibility helped. Sovald’s reaction to her appearance when he did finally arrive aided in easing his guilt. Apparently he was not the only one that found the sight intriguing.

The next morning offered little in the way of improvement. He knew the Sedia’s had made the decision of when they would leave; however he did not know if they told anyone beside themselves. Judging from the touchiness he had received from Sovald, they had not. It took almost a full extra hour to ready everything for departure, but between the two of them they had succeeded, though it had helped greatly that for the first time since their arrival the sisters had actually stayed somewhat together and in one place.

With the sun shining bright and a false sense of warmth quickly stolen by the strength of the cold wind that blew head long into the group they had departed with the young man between the sisters. Sovald had taken the lead once more as with their arrival and Corin had the rear guard. The improved visibility without the drudging rain they had been sieged under on their trip here allowed a better view of the surrounding for both the pleasure of the countryside as well as tactical advantage. Things could only get better from his standpoint now that they where back on the road to Aringill. After all the sisters were usually quiet content to spend most of the time in their rooms when they were in the various Inn’s along the way. If that held true for the return trip it would mean their job of guarding them would be significantly easier and he may even get a chance to pop downstairs now and then for an ale and perhaps some fun flirting with the serving girls, old habits where hard to break.

A stiff neck and cold hands were the least of her worries as Dawn turned in the saddle and told Derek to stop straying behind them. She kept turning to him and had for the last hour kept his reins in her hand. He did not want to travel anymore, for he had done so for the last four days and he was a nobleman who could choose his days of travel himself. Dawn had pursed her lip out, bit down a few comments that would surely shock him, coming from the lovely Lady Naomi Herald. So she had taken his reins and pulled the horse along next to her own, earning her a few comments about having to listen to reason from a man who knew better. The looks Corin and Sovald then shot him were enough to quiet the boy down, but Dawn’s fingers were still itching to use a simple Air weave on the boy. She thanked the Light they were near the border of Tear and would in two days reach Aringill, safe and warm where the Healing could begin. Dawn would not have to deal with the menace from Tear for a few days at least, Fayth would hopefully know what to do with the boy then. Nyssa came riding up next to Dawn, she had been riding up front for a while and Dawn was glad to find her Sister had not been as affected as she was by their passenger. The Gray offered to watch over Derek Hearne for a while and Dawn gladly accepted the change of pace, she heeded her horse and took to a place more in front of their small party.

A few hours later, Dawn’s eyes were dark shadows forming over the lands they passed, looking out for an inn to spend the night. It seemed that Derek had managed to impress himself on everyone in their small group and they all felt he effects of his presence as clear as a needle stuck in their behind. The boy kept whining about wanting to eat, sleep and enjoy his time with the ladies these match makers had promised him. Dawn almost missed Corin’s comment that he saw a light up ahead, he asked Sovald to have a look and soon enough the tower guard returned with the good news that an inn was open just a few miles south. They heeded the horses and soon found themselves in the warmth of a small common room. The innkeeper offered them rooms and food for a decent price and his son took care of their horses. All seemed to go well, even Derek helped by leaving them early in the evening. When Derek was finally up in his room, trying to get some sleep under the ragged blankets he had seen lie there. Dawn shook her head and ordered them a round of spiced wine to warm up and forget about the day’s pain, namely Derek Hearne.

Dawn was just about to wish them all a good night when the door swung open and three broad shouldered men entered, smelly of ale and sweat, looking for a room and some decent food. Their raw voices filled the small common room and Dawn could feel the two guards become on the edge of their senses, her own hands seeking the dagger she hid in her sleeve. Nyssa sat across from her at the table and had the best angle at these men who took a table by the door, calling for the innkeeper to hurry. Dawn rose and said, “I shall be retreating to my room now,†she was not sure these men were here to cause trouble. And another day with Derek Hearne on horseback required all the energy she could muster, so she started for the corridor to the back of the inn where their rooms lay. One of the men caught her leaving and called out for her, “Oy Lady, leaving so early in the night? Leaving me and my friends to eat our dinner all alone?†he called and rose from his seat. Dawn turned on her heel, embraced Saidar but was careful not to channel, they were not out of Tear yet and it was stupid to blow their cover only two days from Aringill over a fool man with a bad drunk. “I apologize good sir, but I wish you a good night and hope you will do me the same,†the man laughed and said, “Of course my Lady,†he said and Dawn could not help but let out a relieved sigh.

“That is, after you empty your pouch for me and, well…. why don’t you share a night cap with us, then you can be off to bed, my Lady,†his voice was no longer barking, it was crystal clear. It scared the Gray and for an instant it was plain on her face. However, she could not show that and kept herself steady on her feet, trying not to loose eye contact with the man who had spoken to her, he started to move towards her and Dawn’s calm face kept staring back at him. She said nothing, not sure what her friends could do to help her, not sure where the innkeeper was or what would happen if she channeled and tried to push them back. She was unsure and waited for the moment to pass, for the man to sit back down, apologize for his behavior and offer them a drink to make up. Only that moment did not seem to come and he kept walking up to Dawn whose face became a little more pale with every step the man took. She reached for her pouch but the man barked something that resembled, “I’ll find that pouch myself, don’t play funny with me,†then he turned towards the table, Dawn followed his eyes and noticed how all three were standing up next to the table, dead silent and frozen as she was, but more determined than she could ever imagine feeling. Dawn caught Nyssa’s eye and then looked back at the man threatening her, coming closer again. She took a step back and wrecked her brain for a good move that would not betray who they were. Derek Hearne must not know, he would not accept it and all would be for nothing, she bit her lip and waited.

OOC: Take it where you want, just don't blow the AS cover as they're still in Tear. Smile

- - - - - A rich little city boy was all this Derek was. An annoying one at that, too. The boy never seemed to shut up either. They might be taking him in for healing, but surely the Yellows wouldn't mind a few more minor things to heal.. He sighed, and massaged the hilt of his sword. He wouldn't use the Void on this small of a problem... although it might help in dealing with Dawn. She was... troublesome, to say the least. He wasn't sure how to quite approach that problem. But that was for a different time -- right now, he had to keep their party safe, no easy thing with Derek continually whining. Although Sovald wasn't sure if that danger was from others hearing him, or from his own party killing him. More than once, Sovald gave him glares, and when the boy had the insolence to attempt to tell Dawn to listen to his reason, he got a particularly cutting glance. That kept him quiet, if only for a few minutes. Then the boy started up again. Those little signs... the shifting of the cloak... Dawn was getting fed up with him. Sovald shook his head. Why was he paying so much attention? After a little while longer, Nyssa rode up, and some of the tension in Dawn's shoulders gave out as she spurred up in the line, away from Derek -- although it made Sovald nervous to have a Lady at the head of the line.

- - - - - Towns were few and far between in this area, and it was getting rather dark before a light was finally spotted. Sovald motioned for Corin to stay back, and he spurred Jeade'en forward. Once he got out of hearing range of the boy, he sighed. A bit of peace in quiet, if only for a moment. And it was fairly good news, as well -- an inn with room for four nobles and a boy. The others were visibly tired, and quite thankful when they were finally able to sit and rest themselves in the common room. Even more fortunate, after the day's ride, Derek went to sleep near immediatly. That left the rest of them to enjoy a nice drink, and a little rest on the ears. Sovald leaned back, keeping his eyes scanning the room. Just because they were in an inn did not mean they would not have any trouble -- there could be plenty to get in their way.

- - - - - The creak of the door swinging open already had Sovald looking for trouble. And in it walked. The first word that came to mind was thug. Petty thugs. But large petty thugs. Sovald slid his hand smoothly over the hilt of his sword. It wouldn't do to make a mess, but if they tried anything... He kept his eyes on them as he raised the mug to his lips... and movement caught his eye. Dawn was standing, and turned for the stairs. A bad move with this type... what was she thinking?! But then again, perhaps she had not been in too many common inns either. Or she was just tired. Either way, it attracted the men's attention. Then..

- - - - - “I shall be retreating to my room now.†Going out of her way to draw attention to herself? Politeness, perhaps. Things of nobility. A black-headed brute turned his leering gaze towards her, raising his own voice.

- - - - - “Oy Lady, leaving so early in the night? Leaving me and my friends to eat our dinner all alone?†This wasn't going to end at all well. Sovald took a quick inventory of the room as things progressed. They couldn't very well run the men through without a fuss. And at this point, showing steel was just asking for someone to get hurt. Best keep the women out of it. Corin was a Guard, he should be able enough at hand to hand combat. All this shot through Sovald's head as he tossed his hair back. A man was getting to his feet now. Sovald stood with the rest of them, leaving his sword lying on the ground. He tightened his broad shoulders, and heard the malice in the man's voice. Indeed, this was a brute -- with a powerful master. The man began approaching the table. Only one way to diffuse this situation. And Sovald didn't like what he'd have to do at first.

- - - - - Stepping into the man's path, he stared him straight down, and raised his voice. "I don't think you want to be laying a hand on the Lady." The man almost had a look of pleasure on his face. He was looking for a fight, and wasn't too impressed by Sovald's bulk. Of course, he didn't see Corin edging around the table to get an angle on one of the man's friends either. Nor did he know that they were more than prettied-up noblemen playing at soldier. Well... he hadn't before Sovald stood up. Now... The man sneered.

- - - - - "And you're going to be the one stopping me, with your wall of velvet?" He reached out and put a hand on Sovald's chest and shoved. Sovald smiled, and his eyes glittered dangerously. He had not been having a great day, and maybe this wouldn't be too bad either. He saw the room perfectly now, the Void surrounding him. Thugs used to their reputation and strength keeping them going. One doing his best to sneak up on Sovald, the other holding still for Corin. To hope they did not bare steel. He raised his hand, and siezed the man's wrist firmly, twisting slowly. The man was strong! Stronger than Sovald had thought, anyways, but it turned the same. A flash, and all so slowly. Someone bull-rushed Sovald, but he was already gone. He let go of the wrist, his hand coming in low, with a short jab right in the lower part of his opponent's stomach, moving forward as the other man got pushed back. It was a simple trick, but Sovald trailed his foot back, and the man who tried to surprise him went flying, slamming into one of the tables. Sovald had other things to worry about though. His opponent was no longer surprised, and had blocked the swift shot to the side of his neck. At least Corin was taking out the third man. The innkeeper had disappeared. So to keep the men away from the women... why didn't they head for the stairs, the fools? Noblewomen were of no use here. Around, around he looked as he exchanged blows, jabs, slowly beating at the man, blocking when needed.

The distant light; hope in the darkening glumness of another day in the saddle with the sniveling spoilt brat. Was like the warmth of a roaring fire after a long day’s journey in a blizzard. With the attitude the boy displayed he would never last a week in the yard under the trainers he had seen or followed. A grin for the first time in what, at the moment, seemed eternity made half a home on Corin’s face. His mind played out some of the wonderful surprises he would have in store for the lad if he were in the yard and assigned as his mentee. Sovalds sudden spur ahead drew him back from his brief yet somewhat satisfying dream; eyes and ears alert for the slightest noise. Sovald had moved ahead with Dawn leaving him to protect Nyssa and the annoying boy. Even his firm and now well tested control of emotions could not keep the soft sigh from escaping him. He could have been back at the tower, warm and relaxed, tending to the many things Sirayn would have held him accountable for instead of being a nurse maid for this poor excuse for nobility. In reality he should have been off in the north protecting her; teeth ground bitterly, stalling the boy in mid sentence of yet another complaint. It was not entirely the boy fault as tension and discourse seized him briefly. It was knowing that his rightful place was being served by another. Another who’s cold dark presence offered little in the way of comfort around Sirayn. Why the blasted women could not see something so obvious confused him to no end of late.

The return of the scouting group and word of food and sleep bought a sense of relief finally to shoulders far too tight. They had seen little in the way of physical work to have set them so. But the constant bickering of the boy; the tension around the Aes Sedais and Sovald was building on him as well. Arrival back in Aringill could not come soon enough for Corin’s liking. It took what seemed record time to have the rooms checked, the horses secured for the night, and their belongings stowed away in the rooms they would be occupying. With the boy secured and asleep in his room; Corin was still thinking it would be a good idea to tie and gag him if for no other reason then self gratification. In reality there was not an extreme amount of objection to his subtle suggestion. All had succeeded in bringing them to the quiet table they now sat with drink in hand as a calmness settled over them allowing each to find release and relief in different measures. It was a welcome quietness that Corin drank in deeper then the contents of the mug before him. He hoped not all assignments with Aes Sedai would turn out to be so trying on the nerves. He had thoughts of adventure and danger originally; after his meeting and dealings with Sirayn even careful control of diplomats had entered that vision. But babysitting a sniffling, whine grown up child was never part of it. How Sovald had put up with this he did not understand; would not have pictured the man so passive and long on patience.

The noise of voices and the closing of the door snapped Corin from his thoughts; one look at Sovald brought added alertness and clarity to his mind. Nothing really changed in Sovalds outside appearance, yet there was a sudden sense of awareness about him that had not been as forefront prior to their arrival. Dawn’s untimely choice in retiring for the night did little to ease Sovald’s sense which in turn kept Corin’s tight as a tents main guide wire. When they had sat themselves to the table Sovald had positioned to see the entrance and Corin the stairwell to the rooms; a decision he regretted at this moment. Internally he was wound tight like a spring ready to uncoil; outwardly he leaned casually forward as if he had not registered the new guest.

Hope of a quiet peaceful resolve faded quickly with the exchange of words and the movement of Sovald. Corin took his lead from the older man and as he rose Corin stepped out lightly from his chair and moved off to one side hoping to separate the party. He was not fond of, or great in experience when it came to a general brawl but he believed he could hold his own, at least against the one bloke I should be able to. the last free thought to float to the top before he slipped into the comfort and awareness of the void. Unlike Sovald, he had kept his sword on his hip and was somewhat reassured to feel the familiar weight. There should be no need for steel, but he preferred to be ready just the same. Training still so freshly ingrained in him from the yard had taught him to never leave his sword outside his arms reach. A habit time would undoubtedly change, but not yet; he watched the group break up as Sovald had predicted and positioned to keep at least the trailing man’s attention firmly on himself.

Time itself seemed to slow; seconds becoming minutes as Sovald began his dance. The motion, a signal for the single figure Corin now confronted. He watched with vivid clarity as the man’s weight transferred from left to right, hips pivoting to follow the motion of his right hand. Ducking low, Corin transferred his weight to the right; left foot shooting out as it swept in an arc. The man crashed to the floor heavily, the breath bursting from his lungs. Turning Corin checked on the status of the ladies they accompanied. Both still seemed frozen in place, what are they waiting for. For crying out loud MOVE! The stairs will be easier defended then this open space. His though interrupted as his left shoulder was pulled hard from behind. Spinning, his mouth seemed to explode in a dull pain; his head snapped back as instinct and training took the blow’s force and transferred it to movement away and to the right. The man had not lost his breath as Corin had first thought and the split lip that now added the coppery taste of blood to his mouth was proof. A stupid over sight that could have cost him his life if steel had been bare.

Allowing trained senses to gather the location of the ladies and the other dance, Corin kept himself between them and the lone man. “Come little boy, lets see what else we can make bleed.†An edge of laughter seemed to flitter in the man’s words but was lost on the surface of the void. He came forward again as last but on his left this time. Collecting his wrist, Corin stepped back slightly pulling the man further off balance before sinking his left fist in to the kidney of his assailant followed by a knee to the midsection; the man dropped to the floor again but Corin’s attention stayed with him this time. He was not about to make the same mistake twice given the opportunity to learn from it. A glint of metal at the mans wrist had Corin’s foot in motion kicking a dagger across the common room floor before the fellow could rollover and make use of it. Already ingrained training had Corin’s hand on his swords hilt.

The fight started and Dawn tried to move as far away from it as she could, both guards found themselves surrounded by the assailants, while Dawn and Nyssa moved towards the staircase. She was just halfway when the lights went out over her eyes, someone was holding her in his arms, while keeping a hand over her eeys. Kicking and thrashing, Dawn felt the man who was breathing hard in her ear, pulling her away from the stairs. “Let go of me! Brute!†she called and thought about channeling a weave of air and earth to make him let go. She tried to escape his grasp, but with every attempt he seemed more determined to hold on. As they moved back, she tried to thrash her arms, maybe grab something to hit him with but the longer it was dark over her eyes, the less she could see.

All of a sudden, the man released her and Dawn fell on the floor, her knees hitting the woodwork hard and her hands searching for something to hold onto. She slowly rose, dizzy and adjusting to the light again when she felt a lighter hand on her arm, pull her back. It was Nyssa, who pulled her away and as Dawn looked at the spot where she had landed, her eye fell on a tall man, with a gush on his cheek, and a broken chair lying next to his still body. “You hit him?†she asked Nyssa who nodded fiercely as they moved back towards the stairs. They were halfway, when the innkeeper appeared in the doorway and started to push people outside. He got help from some men who appeared in the backdoor with him and as Dawn and Nyssa ran to their rooms, waiting it out they heard the men ending the fight.

Sovald and Corin soon appeared in Nyssa’s room, where they had gone for safety. Dawn still felt dizzy and rubbed her ribs where the man had grabbed her. “What in the Light were they trying to do,†she said in a low voice as she tried to make sense of the different thoughts racing through her brain. At least they were gone now and the innkeeper had assured the tower guards that he would not let them back in that evening. Dawn did not feel reassured much, but she had little say in the matter as it was too late to travel to a different inn. “We’ll be in Aringill soon, let us hope we make it in one piece,†she mused and excused herself to find her own room and some rest.
