Necessity is the Mother of Invention ~ Maegen

Having never had much interest in angreal, Shaneevae headed toward that section of the library. Honestly, she’d never had much interest in the One Power and what she could actually accomplish with it save the basics and necessity. A stubborn Brown, she preferred to work things out for herself. Most times, she considered using Saidar to be the easy way out and preferred to accomplish a task with her bare hands or the power of her mind depending upon the circumstance. However, she was more than aware of her or any man’s limited abilities in more demanding areas, which is what had her searching out an angreal or ter’angreal to be of aid in her recent quest. Even the most brilliant and dedicated scientist could not do it all on her own. That is what kept Shaneevae from becoming too self-absorbed. The Brown was aware of her shortcomings and knew when to ask for help and this happened to be one of those times.

She casually smoothed the hair at the nape of her neck, which was falling from the simple up-do she had crafted that morning. Not sure why she fussed with such things, but even when her mind was on more cerebral ventures, vanity still managed to creep in on occasion. Of course, she still looked a hoyden three-fourths of the time, but that fact had never deterred the male portion of the species. Actually, in all truth, Shaneevae was quite certain her wild unkempt image entranced them all the more. Men were odd ducks.

Entering the stacks, she swayed through a wide beam of morning sun shining through the monstrous windows above. Running her finger across the bindings, she was unaware of the sunlight casting an ethereal glow about her person. Golden brown hair became even lighter, green-blue eyes caught the light and even with her hair askew, ink upon her hands and a gown cut indecent by most standards, she looked a mythical wood nymph.

Shaneevae paused her pursuit and sighed. Knowing in her heart of hearts that if there had been such an invention, she would have already read about it and the Tower would already be using it to their full advantage. How would she ever begin to find what she needed. A scientist she may be. An inventor she was not.

Ooc: Rusty? No worries ;) Mae's a bit rusty too..

Necessity. It was one thing her hair was not. Instead it flopped about in the messy bun that she had put her hair in that morning before running out to the yards to practive her sword forms with Aran, and that's how it stayed after her shower. Maybe what she needed was to make an Ter'Angreal that would smooth out her hair so that she didn't need to deal with it's unrully curls. However, Creating a Ter'Angreal of any kind was still seemingly out of her reach and she desperatly wished to crack it's code.

As a Scholar and a mathmatician, Maegan thrived on her studies for a way to shield a Channeler without exhausting herself or her sisters in holding the shield. The theory of how such a thing would work was easy, but the application of the methods and how it worked drove Maegan into a near obsession to find the answer. Setttling back in her chair Maegan pulled her specticles from her face and rubbed the bridge of her nose between her eyes where they usually sat. She coudn anouther dead end. Picking up the stone in front of her she dleved within it and still found no trace ot the intricate hour long weave she had tried to place on it. Was it the elements of the stone? or was there soemthing in her weave that she missed? Surely something would stick eventually, but how?

Setting the stone back down, she gathered up the few well read books on Angreal and stood up from her work desk. Glancing over her desk, she picked up a bit and rearranged it a little so that it would be more enticing for her to return to her work station, Maegan left her room and headed towards the Stack in the Library to return the books that she borrowed and to find others that she had, undoubtedly, already read through. Lost in thought she picked her way thorugh the Stacks, only to find that she was not alone in the Angreal section. Rarely did Maegan ever see anyone in the deeper section of the Stacks that it caught her off guard. She knew the woman well by name, but otherwise not at all.

"Afternoon Shanaeve Sedai." She inclined her head towards the other Head of Ajah. Her voice was clear and well intoned and she looked up to the woman with her usual un-emotional face. Placing the books that she had brought with her back in thier proper place She pulled out a few titles without really reading them, already knowing the content, hoping that she missed something and could find the answer she was looking for. She barely even heard the question that Shanaeve asked her.

The Red was…Maegan…..er, Shaneevae could not remember her surname, but she recognized the face. Red’s were typically impeccable in their dress, their manner and their demeanor, but Maegan was not. The younger woman had remained in her memory simply because she usually had the same frazzled, I’m too busy for appearances, style the Brown Sister fashioned and Shaneevae had to admit that she had been disappointed to learn the sister had chosen the Red Ajah so many years ago. For in the eyes of an old Brown, Maegan Sedai exuded the qualities she so admired about her own Ajah, fiercely intelligent, inquisitive with an unnatural love of books.

“Good afternoon, Maegan Sedai.” Shaneevae inclined her head toward the smaller woman and began to form a question in her mind. She had never been ashamed of not knowing the answer to a question and would never hesitate to ask in order to increase her own mind, but asking a Red about materials in the library, the sanctuary of her very own Ajah, was a bit humbling. Shaking off her pride, Shaneevae turned toward the bespectacled Red.

“Maegan Sedai, are you very familiar with the selection of scrolls and books in this section of the library. I’ll be frank, I know a little of Power wrought pieces, but I am at my knowledgeable end, as well as my wits end.” The Brown Sister chuckled a bit before continuing. “Do you know of any angreal or ter’angreal that increases the magnification of very small objects?”

Twitching her lips, she pushed the stray hair behind her ears, “And when I say very small objects, I mean objects that cannot be viewed with the naked eye.”

Ooc: Just to let you know that "telescope/microscope" was approved for creation. ;) Although some of this is on assumption that my wrk on the Academy will be approved (i don't see why it will not since i'm leaving the thoughts on it public for James and other admins)..

Ic:

The look of surprise was brief, but there. A Brown asking her about the existance of a Ter'Angreal.... Pushing up her specticles on her nose to recover a little from her surprise, Maegan paused for a moment as she scoured her memory. It was an odd questions and she hated to admit, "I'm afraid not. To my knowledge all Ter'Angreals were created to serve a purpose to make a task easier or anouther variable along those lines." Maegan frowned as she thought more over different objects. Maegan had spent years around the creation of objects with such thoughts and along side other inventors that carved away the makigns of great history with findings. However, Maegan kept much of this knowledge out of the Towers reach, and that of the Carihien high Houses and fear of it being used for political gain. Her and the Archivist (more well known as the Headmistress) of the Academy kept what was under works in private and until they both fell in agreement with how and when soemthign should be brought forward towards the public.

Maegan looked to the slight downcast int he woman's sigh, nearly undetectable by those that did not have sensetive hearing. Aes Sedai or not, Maegan recognized the woman for who she was, a Scholar, much like herself. Going out on a limb, she threw out a new idea, seeing how the bait sat with Shanaevae Sedai, listening carefully to the tone in the woman's voice.

"However I suspect that something of the like could be created, however not as an Angreal but something that is not One Power related. But nothing of either has come across my path." She paused, listening. "There is one that I know in Cairhien that has made a large crystal looking glass that allows one to see very far away without the need of a weave of the One Power. Perhaps, maybe have a suggestion as to how to create something similar to what you are looking for without the need of searching through Ter'angreals." .. like i must..

Feeling her hopes sink, Shaneevae almost let out an audible sigh of frustration. Her disappointment was great, as she had gone over all the possibilities time and again with no satisfactory conclusion. The Brown sister simply could not fathom how this simple little invention was not already in existence. As humbling an experience it was, asking a Red for something in the Library, she should have been relieved when Meagan knew no more than she did, but she was not. More pleased she could not have been if the woman had laughed in her face and told her what a fool she was for not knowing such an obvious invention. The scorn would be easier to handle than the knowledge that this magnifying apparatus did not exist.

Just as her dreams started to bottom out, Maegan interjected, “However I suspect that something of the like could be created, however not as an Angreal but something that is not One Power related.” Blue-green eyes widened and brightened with interest and renewed hope. Every ounce of energy was focused on that moment and the next words that came from the Red’s mouth. Had Shaneevae been a canine, her ears would have perked, zeroing in on the stimuli and the fur along her spine would have stood. She was not so sure that they hadn’t….well the ears part anyway, she was quite certain that she didn’t not have fur along her spine.

"There is a man that I know in Cairhein that has made a large crystal looking glass that allows one to see very far away without the need of a weave of the One Power. Perhaps he may have a suggestion as to how to create something similar to what you are looking for without the need of searching through Ter'angreals."

Inhaling sharply, sheer exuberance broke across her face. Yes, that man could do what she wanted. There was not a doubt in her mind that this would be the place she found her answer. Bouncing on the balls of her feet, Shaneevae grabbed her companion by the shoulders, “Oh Maegan, do you really think he can? Do you think that he’d be willing to work with me? Where exactly is he and how long will it take you to make preparations for departure?”

Realizing that she was practically shaking the woman across from her, Shaneevae dropped her hands quickly to her sides and rolled her eyes at her own asinine reaction. “Forgive me Maegan.” She chuckled. “The older I get the less I care about Aes Sedai propriety and decorum. I pray I have not hurt you with my over zealous nature.”

Ooc: I made a big boo boo in my last post. :) I decided after i made this post that the glass maker is a woman. LOL!! I'll go edit my post to reflect a non-gender character so that the flow of the RP stays the same.

Maegan was grinning. She could not help it. The woman's enthusiasm and trickle of excitment was as stimulating as a new-found descouver in any field she studdied. And this was of no difference in comparison. This woman had much potencial of which Maegan collectively decided she was not going to go to waste in these dusty stacks. She tucked the a small portion of her hair that seems, as always, stuck to the simple frame of her specticles.

"There is no need to appoligize, Sister, as I have also been known to show such enthusuasm." Maegan winked in good humour. "Undoubtably my own propriety and standards has been challenged to which I pride in." Returning herself to Shaneevae's original question , She continued without missing a beat. "Riuda al’Reres is actually a woman. Developer of the Telescope, Riuda is one of Cairhien's more prominant teachers. For years she taught physics and basic studies to the younger generations. Although retired to teaching only one class, an Introduction to Physics, to young Pupils, she still dabbles in her Arts. She is the would you would need to seek for your answers."

Maegan wondered if the older woman wouldn't mind the company of an Aes Sedai. Riuda was an odd bird and often refered to as eccentric within the Academy. She watched Shaneevae as carefully as before, confirming every doubt that this woman could be trusted, to some extent, with a secret she spend her life building completely under the Tower's ever watchful eyes. Few knew of the Academy, and even fewer would ever be accepted into it. But the time of Tairmon Gaidin was falling upon them, this she had no doubt, and it was time for the Academy t accept what was else in the world. She frowned a little. Understanding the secrecy within, she knew that they would not be happy with bringing forth things that had been only within their walled for over a millenia.
