Ella Yelich-O’Connor is hard to pin down. There are many reasons why the 16-year-old New Zealand girl who performs under the stage name Lorde perfectly fits the mold of the modern millenial pop star (or, alternately, doesn’t at all). She’s commanding, both in lyrical and vocal presence. But she’s got things so under wraps there’s a spooky sense she’s almost TOO commanding. Alternately, she comes off as apathetic, even beyond the level of an unassuming star like, say, Adele (cringe), with a tendency to completely shrug off the trappings of fame — or, in Lorde’s case, writing a song about shrugging off the trappings of fame that ends up reaching #1 on Billboard Hot 100. Touché.

So I could spend paragraphs merely attempting to expound on the cultural significance of having an artist like Lorde top charts & become a role model for the budding generation, but it wouldn’t really matter. She’s a different breed. Her music, as evidenced by stellar debut Pure Heroine, speaks for itself. “It’s a new art form, showing people how little we care,” smirks opener “Tennis Court”. On paper it sounds pretentious. Sung through her smoky lungs, it’s precocious.
