Clouds were gathering in the north, dark and strengthening as they soared on the winds toward Tar Valon. Though she could not see them in the distant sky as she walked Tiassale knew they were there and that by the end of the afternoon the Green Ajah training field would be little more than a mud pit. She had pulled on her stoutest pair of boots this morning and her dress was plain green wool, well cut and fit but unadorned. With her blonde hair pulled tight into a simple bun she resembled a farmwife more than a Battle Sister. The frown creasing her forehead caused even most Sisters to give her a wide berth as she stalked through the hallways.

I’ll have to speak with Laesine Sedia again, she admitted to herself glumly. The headaches were worsening and as yet the Yellow Sister had found nothing that helped relieve the pain. She was loathe to take something stronger, something that might cloud the unpredictable warning sign of her Talent but she was running out of options at this point. Either she suffered, both from the pain and from her efforts to mask the Bond and thus spare Andular any pain, or she took to her bed for the day, drugged and nearly incoherent. There must be some other treatment.

Alyria was waiting for her when she arrived, walking amongst the dummy Trollocs and Shadowspawn. Some ambitious groundskeeper had gone so far as to construct something that she supposed was a Draghkar, at least it had wings.

“Good morning Alyria Sedai,†Tiassale nodded pleasantly to the newest Recruit of the Green and her former student. That fact would either make this easier or much more difficult. Some new Recruits felt the need to challenge their one time mentors, on every possible point.

“Today we will begin the lessons the Battle Ajah requires. We will begin with Air.†Seizing hold of the Power helped diminish a bit of the ache in her skull, “The first will be a cutting edge, or as many Battle Sisters call it – the Air Razor.†She wove slowly, so that Alyria might glimpse each thread as she intertwined it – predominately Air the weave held Spirit as well. The Green Sister turned and picking a stuffed Trolloc at random sent the Razor spinning towards it. Tufts of straw and dust filled the air as an arm fell to the ground.

“As you can see, most effective. Imagine setting such a weapon loose amongst an army of Shadowspawn. Now, you try it.†Stepping back Tia watched as the nimbus of Saidar suddenly blossomed around Alyria.

There had been a knock at her door last night, right after the dinner bell. Wandering over to the door she assumed the smooth, serene look on her face that she had come to know so well. She opened the door to find Andular there with a letter from Tiassale. Thanking him, she closed the door and slid a finger under the wax seal. She was to start her training to be a Battle Sister tomorrow and was to meet Tiassale in the morning. Alyria channeled a small flow of fire and watched as the letter burned up in her hand.

The next morning, Alyria rose from her bed a put on the plainest white shirt, green breeches, and stout brown boots she could find. If they were going to be training, she needed to be in something she could move in. She looked at her short sword, wondering if she should bring that as well. She wrapped the belt around her waist and slid her sword into place. She hurried down to where Tia had specified, knowing she should not be late.

Upon arriving, she almost let out a small smile. There were stuffed darkfriends everywhere, or at least things trying to resemble darkfriends. Alyria walked through the rows of creatures, looking over each one with curiosity. She had seen a trolloc before, in detail as a matter of fact, and these slightly resembled them.

Looking up, she saw Tia watching her. “Good morning Alyria Sedai,†She said with a nod. Alyria looked at the woman, taking in the sound of her name. "Good Morning Tiassale Sedai," Alyria said, also returning the nod. Alyria thanked her mother for giving her the training to look indifferent. Alyria genuinly liked Tia. She had helped her through all of her rough times as a novice. It was not her fault Sirayn had refused her into the Ajah.

“Today we will begin the lessons the Battle Ajah requires. We will begin with Air.†Tia said. Alyria watched as the glow of Saidar surrounded her. “The first will be a cutting edge, or as many Battle Sisters call it – the Air Razor.†Alyria watched intently as Tia wove Spirit and Air together. Alyria smiled, those were her strongest elements and she knew she would have not problems with this weave. It was intricate, but she was not worried.

Tia turned and sent the weave off towards one of the stuff monstrosities, a puff of dust and straw exploding into the air. The arm of the creature fell to the ground and the air razor disappeared. “As you can see, most effective. Imagine setting such a weapon loose amongst an army of Shadowspawn. Now, you try it.†Tia replied after looking at her destruction.

Alyria grabbed hold of Saidar and started the slow weave of Air and Spirit. She watched as she formed the same disk of air that Tia had, although Alyria's seemed to be different. It looked the same, yet not as sharp as Tia's. Completing the intricate weave, she also flung it at the same Trolloc, watching in silence as the weave sliced through the other arm, dropping it to the floor. She turned and gave Tia a small smile, letting her know she was happy with the results. She tried it again and again, each time making the weave faster and faster, until the Trolloc they had begun on, was nothing but straw and fabric on the floor.

Smiling, Alyria turned to Tiassale. "I can definitely see how that will be effective in battle. I am assuming there are cases where that weave will not work?"

Tia nodded as she surveyed the damage done by Alyria’s razor, “And some things that will not always notice a missing limb or head. The Shadow has an endless variety of monstrosities. The key is control, you can send a large razor flying willy nilly through the ranks of an army that might not due as much damage as something smaller and more refined. And in battle such a thing could deprive a Fist of its Fade handler.â€

“The next weave is even less sophisticated and not nearly as deadly but quite effective for taking prisoners alive, yet unconscious.†Tiassale chuckled as she wove her club of Air and examined it critically. “Mine is smaller than most, yet denser I think. It’s almost as if the club I weave I intend to hold in my hand and I’ve made the weight and dimensions reflect that.†She gave herself a shake, “Each Sister’s is unique and not all seem to fit their hand as well.â€

She sent the club flying with a small motion of her hand and it capered through the field, knocking against the stuffed dummies before fading into nothingness. “If I aimed for fewer targets the force behind the club would be fiercer.â€

She turned to Alyria with a smile, her headache beginning to fade a bit. “Let’s see what sort of club you come up with, dear. Mind, you’ll enhance all of these weaves as you use them in the years to come.â€

“And some things that will not always notice a missing limb or head. The Shadow has an endless variety of monstrosities. The key is control, you can send a large razor flying willy nilly through the ranks of an army that might not due as much damage as something smaller and more refined. And in battle such a thing could deprive a Fist of its Fade handler.†Alyria nodded, fully aware that control made all the difference in the world. They were actually taught that as novices, in their first Saidar class.

“The next weave is even less sophisticated and not nearly as deadly but quite effective for taking prisoners alive, yet unconscious.†Tia said, once again grasping hold of Saidar. Alyria watched the woman as she wove a tight, small club, made entirely out of Air. She gave a small giggle as she examined the club she had made. “Mine is smaller than most, yet denser I think. It’s almost as if the club I weave I intend to hold in my hand and I’ve made the weight and dimensions reflect that.†Tiassale said with a small shake of her head. “Each Sister’s is unique and not all seem to fit their hand as well.â€

Tiassale gave a small movement of her hand, and the club went flying through the air. It smacked into the large, stuffed creatues, floating back and forth between them, until it faded away. Alyria smiled, thinking of how much fun it would have been to know that weave as a Novice! She nearly let out a giggle thinking about it. She turned to Tiassale with a smile.

“If I aimed for fewer targets the force behind the club would be fiercer. Let’s see what sort of club you come up with, dear. Mind, you’ll enhance all of these weaves as you use them in the years to come.†Tiassale said with a smile on her face.

Alyria opened herself to the source, still amazed at the wonderful feeling it gave her each time. You would think after using it so much, the feeling of exhilaration would feel like second nature, yet it was breath taking each time. Alyria wove small threads of Air, copying the weave the way Tiassale had made it. She continued, weaving the threads tighter with each pull, until she had a club of Air. When she looked at it, she let out a giggle. She looked at Tiassale and saw her smiling too. The club Alyria had made was huge, at least twice the size of Tiassale's. It was a bit flat on one side, making the overall appearance, something to laugh at. Alyria let go of Saidar, erupting in a fit of giggles.

"I am sorry Tiassale, but that was the funniest looking club I have ever seen. Maybe I should try to make one a bit smaller?" She once again grasped Saidar, this time weaving a smaller club, making it look a bit more uniformed than before. It still would not have fit into her hand, but at least it was not the size of a small child!

Alyria gave a small flick of her hand, like Tiassale had, focusing on hitting 3 of the stuffed target instead of the lot of them like Tia had. The club managed to hit 2 of the targets before fading away. Alyria smiled brightly, happy to see Tia beaming with pride at her accomplishments. She practiced making the club a few more times, before Tia began to speak.

It was difficult to suppress the surge of laughter. When did that happen? she wondered ruefully, When did laughter become such a stranger to me?

Still, Tiassale managed to smother the giggle that might have joined Alyria’s. This was after all, serious if not deadly knowledge. Laughter will soon be lost to this young one as well. She struggled to look severe as she went on.“As I said child, you’ll soon find a size that suits you. All of these weaves will be made your own.â€

“This is a weave that I’ve only used once, during a display of our abilities before the Tower at large.†Tiassale wove the dome effortlessly, enclosing herself in a shield that would protect her from most things….most things.

As she turned toward her student the shield shimmered, entirely made of Air it floated like a whisper, just above Tiassale’s skin, thicker where it faced the young woman. “Can you see it, Alyria? Did I weave it too quickly?â€

The newest Green shook her head vigorously, “No Tia, I see it.â€

“Make one of your own then.†Tiassale let her shield fade and watched as Alyria wove the same around herself. After a few moments of adjusting it was ready. Nodding with approval the Green looked Alyria straight in the eye, “Now, I want you to hold it steady, girl. I’m going to try and breach it.â€

With no more warning Tiassale attacked, weaving the club she had only just shown her student. Deftly Alyria not only sidestepped but her shield seemed to strengthen itself wherever Tiassale struck. “Excellent, Alyria. That's it. Repair the shield where it weakens.†Tia tried a feint but the younger woman adjusted perfectly. Tiassale struck a few more blows but all were turned aside. She smiled broadly as she let her club fade, “Most impressive, Sister. You must have spent some time in the Training Yards to have such good instincts.â€

Tiassale squinted at the sky, while they had practiced the promised storm had found them and hung over the city gloomily, “Let us finish for today, I think you are sufficiently practiced in Air to move on to the next element. Tomorrow we shall begin Earth and I’d rather you had a good nights rest before that lesson.†She laid a hand on Alyria’s arm, “Before we move on however, show me how you might have altered these weaves I’ve shown you. A new and younger eye is always welcome.â€

Ooc- Air Shield (Air 4, Skill 4). This one requires less skill than Air Razor, but greater strength with Air than both previous Air weaves we did. Remind me to mention to Sira we should also work warcraft strategy into this class.

“As I said child, you’ll soon find a size that suits you. All of these weaves will be made your own." Tia said, tryihg to look serious. "This is a weave that I’ve only used once, during a display of our abilities before the Tower at large.â€

Tiassale wove a dome, one that completely enclosed herself. She turned to look at Alyria, making the shield shimmer. It floated just above Tia's skin, making it look thicker. “Can you see it, Alyria? Did I weave it too quickly?â€

Alyria nodded vigerously. "No Tia, I see it." “Make one of your own then.†Tia said, letting the shield around herself disolve. Alyria opened herself to Saidar, smiling as the rush filled her. She wove the threads of Air, almost exactly like Tia did. The shield slowly appeared around her, settling just above the hair on her arms. To Alyria, it almost felt like a dress that was one size too big. It took a few moments of Tia pointing out weak spots and holes in the shield before Tia looked her in the eye and nodded.

Now, I want you to hold it steady, girl. I’m going to try and breach it.†Tia said, a hard look on her face. Alyria did not even have time to nod before Tiassale attacked the shield. She had woven the club Alyria had just learned earlier and started to beat on the shield. Alyria felt the club threaten the shield, causing a normal instinct within her, to strengthen the weave. She also felt herself slipping into the training Raisa had been teaching her, sidestepping a blow or two.

“Excellent, Alyria. That's it. Repair the shield where it weakens.†Tia said. Alyria adjusted the flows and the weakened spot was easily fixed. Tia try to trick her, leaning to the right, but the going left. Raisa had taught her well, how to avoid falling into that type of trap. There were a few more glancing blows made before Tia let the club fade away. “Most impressive, Sister. You must have spent some time in the Training Yards to have such good instincts.†Tia said with a smile

Tia looked up at the sky, “Let us finish for today, I think you are sufficiently practiced in Air to move on to the next element. Tomorrow we shall begin Earth and I’d rather you had a good nights rest before that lesson.†She laid a hand on Alyria’s arm, “Before we move on however, show me how you might have altered these weaves I’ve shown you. A new and younger eye is always welcome.â€

Alyria thought for a moment; the easiest to alter was the dome. First she wove it, as Tia had, making a dome around herself. The dome was large enough to fit both her and Tia inside. "I imagine, if we were linked, Sister, we could make a dome large enough for many others." Alyria let go of the dome, and wrapped one around Tia. This one was a full dome, a little higher than her head, and wide enough for her to lay down in. "I also imagine it would make and excellent cell."

The next weave was the Air Razor. With a little more effort and a bit more intricate weave, Alyria made it into the shape of a solid, sharp circle. She flung it at the trolloc and found it to be just as effective, if not more so, than the normal razor they had woven. "By making it sharp on all sides, and smaller, it can slice through a bit more, and is much easier to conceal."

With the club of Air though, Alyria was not quite sure she could alter it to be more effective. "I am sure you could weave the club into the shap of a sword or even a different weapon, but I am not sure how effective it would be." Alyria tried to weave it into a sword, getting it almost in the shape of it before letting saidar go. "I think it will take some practice though."

By comparison the following day dawned bright and clear, everything left fresh and clean from the nights rain. A bright smile on her face, part relief from pain, part anticipation of another day speeding her former mentee towards her goal, Tiassale met Alyria in the halls and together they walked companionably to the practice field, discussing the day’s lesson.

“Earth does tend to confound most Sisters,†Tiassale wanted Alyria to be prepared for difficulty of what she was about to face, “but that makes it more important. The Creator protect us, when Tarmon Gaidon comes we’ll face worse than Trollocs and Fades.â€

“Dreadlords and ladies who can perhaps weave things we’ve not imagined. Whose strengths are unknown and whose weaknesses must be exploited. Battle Weaves of Earth may be one way to do that. If you ever have the opportunity to observe Sirayn Sedai weaving Earth you'll understand what I mean. Its quite the education.â€

They paused at the practice field, surveying the repairs the groundskeepers were making to the havoc Alyria had caused the previous day. But Tiassale gently pulled Alyria away, circling a small stone wall to an open, barren field.

“This first weave is called Riven Earth. Meant to rend the earth around in front of an enemy, it can be used is a excellent distraction when you need to gain time to retreat or to cause confusion amongst ranks.†Embracing the source she faced the open part of the field and wove a arrow shaped weave with a slight amount of Spirit and reinforced with Fire woven at the tip. Once the weave was formed she sent it off with a quick burst of Air and watched as it hit the targeted ground and exploded. Clods of dirt landed a few feet away and an ugly scorching trench marred the field.

“Start small,†she cautioned Alyria, “and be careful not to overtax your strength.â€

Alyria found herself awake early this morning. She couldn't sleep. She was having the same nightmares over and over again. She needed to talk to Throm; he always made the bad dreams disappear. She was so tired of dreaming about her mother and that man that attacked them both.

She found herself walking slowly through the Green Ajah halls, looking at the items hanging on the walls when Tiassale approached her. They walked to the practice yards, talking happily about yesterday's lesson.

“Earth does tend to confound most Sisters but that makes it more important.

Its quite the education.†Tia said with a smile. Alyria tried not to scowl at hearing Sirayn's name. She was still so angry with her she could scream. Why the woman had to be so vicious in her rejection was beyond her. It still stung a bit to think about.

Alyria stopped as they reached the practice field, watching the groundskeepers cleaning up yesterday's destruction. Alyria felt Tia's hand on her arm and reluctently moved away. She found herself standing in a stone circle, full of nothing but dirt and stone.

“This first weave is called Riven Earth. Meant to rend the earth around in front of an enemy, it can be used is a excellent distraction when you need to gain time to retreat or to cause confusion amongst ranks.†Alyria watched as Tiassale embraced the source and faced the open part of the field. She wove a arrow shaped weave with a slight amount of Spirit and reinforced with Fire woven at the tip. Once the weave was formed she sent it off with a quick burst of Air and watched as it hit the targeted ground and exploded. Clods of dirt landed a few feet away and an ugly scorching trench marred the field.

“Start small,†Tiassale replied, “and be careful not to overtax your strength.â€

Alyria nodded before embracing the source. She felt the wonderful feeling as the warmth of Saidar entered her every fiber. She took in a deep breath, slowly weaving the arrow of Spirit like Tia had. That was easy for the most part. Spirit had always come easy to her. She started to weave the fire and earth into it, copying Tia, but found it was a lot harder than it looked. The entire weave jumbled tightly into a knot. Alyria sighed and let the weave go, trying again.

She tried again, sweat starting to bead on her forehead. After a few more tries, she got the weave right as she sent it off towards the ground with the flow of Air. She could see why Tia had warned her not to tax her strength. It took alot to weave complicated weaves, especially earth and fire. Alyria watched as the arrow went barreling toward the ground, producing a very small explosion. It was half the size Tiassale's had been, then again, so was the final weave she had made.

She looked at Tia, loving the smile she saw there. She had seemed so tired lately; it was nice to see her smile. She smiled at the woman and started another weave, trying to perfect the one she had just made. After a few more attempts, a few more scorch marks, shewas finally able to make one the size of Tia's.

She wiped the sweat off of her head with the back of her hand, grabbing her flask to get some water. "I never realized how hard it was to weave those together before today Tia. I think I will need alot of practice. Can I use these grounds anytime I am free to practice?"

Earth 2

Tiassale nodded vigorously, “By all means, Alyria. Just be certain the groundsmen are safely in another part of the garden and that you do not overtax yourself. Working with Earth can be very tiring. Let’s take a small break, shall we?â€

They walked to a nearby bench and sat for several minutes, discussing trivialities of Tower gossip until Tiassale felt Alyria had lost the strained look about her features.

Nodding to the girl she began to speak, “Very well, the next weave we will be working on is Grenade, as you will see this weave can be very effective in the correct environment.â€

Reaching a thread of earth out she delved into the earth until she found the kind of rock she was looking for. Pulling the rock out of the ground she drew it back toward her and then began to weave thread of Earth and Fire into it to form the initial charge, then making a fine net of Earth Tiassale wove it completely around the rock and matched it up with the inner threads. The light began to glow with a slight red and brown and began to emit a crackling noise that meant the weave was ready to be sent forth.

Shooting it as far as she could with a thread of Air she watched with a grin as it exploded into many pieces, shooting rock bits in every directions. Turning back to her mintee she said, “Isn’t it good to be a Green?†She chuckled at the woman’s response and then instructed her to begin. Nodding her head in satisfactions as she saw Alyria easily complete the weave the first time she tried she headed back over to the wall to watch her practice...

OOC - No worries my dear mentor....I also have been extremely busy. I just started a new job and they have been working me like crazy!!! I love it though. (Bed Bath and Beyond is a GREAT company to work for)

IC - Alyria smiled as Tia suggested they take a small break. Alyria knew working with Earth was tiring, she just did not realize how tiring it could be. They chatted for a bit, mostly about the weather and things going on in the tower. She truly felt a kinship with the woman, a friendship that was most important to her. After everything that had happened, Alyria felt it a hard thing to trust anyone. To have some one like Tia in her life made her feel truly blessed.

“Very well, the next weave we will be working on is Grenade, as you will see this weave can be very effective in the correct environment.†Alyira watched as Tia found a rock and began to weave around it. The weave was a bit complex and actually start to turn red and crackle. She saw Tia give a small smile as she threw it forward with a flow of Air. The rock exploded, sending bits of it in every direction. Alyria's eyes opened wide at the thought of the destruction it could cause. The smile that grew upon her face was one as large as Tia's.

She turned to look at the woman, noticing her chuckling slightly. “Isn’t it good to be a Green?†Alyria smiled wider, if it was possible. "It is amazing to be a green, if only in spirit." Alyria knew it was her turn to try the weave. She found a similar rock and began the weave, smiling when it completed easily and began to glow and crackle. She threw it forward with Air and smiled when it exploded, just like Tia's. She found the thrill of it exhilarating. Alyria stepped forward and continued to weave and throw rocks. It was quite theraputic to make something and destroy it. She felt the anxiety of the days previous fade. She would have continued all day if Tia had not stopped her.

When Alyria was done with that weave Tiassale quickly moved on to the next, acutely aware of her rumbling stomach. The sun was long past its peak. “This weave is known as Pitfall and requires a marginally greater strength in Earth than the last two weaves. Basically it amounts to creating a hole in the ground. Your ability and strength determines how big that hole will end up.â€

Embracing the source Tia wove a narrow net of earth, strengthening it with Spirit on the surface of the ground in front of her. She let the weave settle and then pinched the middle of it downwards, into an arrow point. The ground began to fall in toward the weave and was very strong because of her strength in Earth. Tia tried not to cough as the dust rose up into the air around them.

Once the dirt has settled you could clearly see a large pit in the place her weave had settled, she smiled as she gazed down into her hole and said, “Sisters methods of weaving are as different as the sisters themselves, and sometimes the weaves are almost unrecognizable in the way they are laid down. Yet they all have the essential properties of the Pitfall weave. The Earth reinforced with Fire, the middle of the weave being the strongest point and so being the point best suited to drilling into the earth… and so on.â€

She turned away from the hole and said, “I didn’t use my full strength on this weave for I could have torn the ground in front of us apart and that wouldn’t have done at all. I think you can imagine how this could be used in battle. You may begin now, if you need a angreal I would be more than happy to lend you one I’ve borrowed from the storerooms.â€
