Well a bit rocky, but not too.

Janet, my ever-youthful bride of 32 years and I spent the weekend with RJ and Harriet in Charleston. They are both as fine as anyone could be in the middle of such an ordeal.

The weakness persists, an unwanted side affect of the medications. Claims that he could sleep 22 hours a day if Harriet were to allow it. She won't. You'll recall that we've both spoken cryptically of the nasty side affects of the drugs required to fight Amyloidosis. Prolonged exposure to both the Revlimid and Dexamethasone have left his skin thinned and fragile. As a result, he bruises and cuts pretty easily these days, so we passed on the opportunity to wrestle in the side yard. The cuts that are there are attended to daily by the best warder a person could wish for, Harriet. His hair is back in spades however, as is the beard. Not a gray strand on top, not one. The Lambda light chain number was up ever so slightly this month. No one, not even the Mayo, is concerned about that. Most likely this was due to the month of February being off the Revlimid and that in March they had cut the dosage by 40%. Besides, he told me he had an angel looking out for him. Really!

Though I've known him, well, all my life, he still hits me with a tidbit from time to time that I have either forgotten or never knew. Here's one of those. When he was 2 to 3 years old, seems he would on occasion dart out into the street in front of their home. Looking for traffic was out of the question. Adults would scamper after him and tell him that he had to stay out of the street or a car would hit him. He told them not to worry, that he had an angel who looked out for him and wouldn't let him be harmed. I asked him how he knew about the angel and he said he could sense that he was there. RJ somehow felt that the angel was a he even though angels are most often described as being without sexual definition. RJ even felt that were he to spin quickly around he would catch a fleeting glimpse of his angel as he vaporized to be unseen. RJ is feeling like, if not looking a bit like; one of those cars may have tagged him just a bit. But he knows that he has his angel looking out for him. I wonder if it's the same angel from his early youth. Hope so.

For Janice. Prayers offered for your Peace Officer as he also fights this awful disease.

For Sherry, thanks for the praise. Undeserved. It's easy to love someone who loves you as much as RJ loves this guy. Amazing how the ones seemingly in need of strength give it to those around them.

For Major Jim. First, thank you for your service. A correction however, RJ flew IN helicopters, he wasn't the pilot. Volunteered he did, to be a door gunner on a huey. Freaking insane. Imagine if you can a rather large 19 year old tethered to the chopper, standing outside on the skid, laying suppressing machine gun fire on the landing zone in front of and below the helicopter. On one occasion, one of the times he knew he would be dead in seconds, an RPG (rocket propelled grenade) was fired at their ship as they were slowing to land. The business end of the grenade is smaller than a football and travels at blinding speed. RJ saw it approaching and knew they were all dead. The only thing he could do to defend his crew was to fire his machine gun at the rapidly approaching object. What are the chances of hitting it? With the luck of Ganesh, his bullets found the target and it exploded, close enough that shrapnel rained on the helicopter.

To Ryan Toy. Thank you for sharing about your fight. If a 14 year old can do it... Inspirational you are. Thanks.

For Sgt Cody. Shook his hand, hugged his neck, kissed him on the cheek and told him I loved him. Hope that covers your request. From the heart, thanks for your service. Hooah!

Do keep the prayers coming. We're a long way from not needing them.

Wilson, thank you so much for the update and the story! It's great that RJ is doing OK, although we all know it's a long road. Prayers and good thoughts to all of you - the battle is always a group effort, isn't it? Re-reading WOT yet again, the magic grows each time....

Much love from the English Lake District,

Dawn

Wilson, thanks as always for your updates. Your a good man for helping Jim and Harriet out in their time of need, there should be more people like all of you. Stong, stubborn people of good faith and true heart. I hate knowing that Jim is so ill and that he suffers from such weakness and fatigue, which probably must be Hell for the man descibed in all your posts. It breaks my heart to think of any one in such a state. But I have a feeling Jim is fighting for all he's worth, and with a man such as he, that has to count a lot. The man you lovingly describe to us does not seem the type to throw in the towel even if he has been knocked down a time or two, but can you expect from a man who was able to shoot an RPG down mid-flight, that took nerve and determination, and so does the fight he's currently in.

And as always, Harriet has my greatest respect and admiration. She must be one Hell of a woman, just as strong, tough and determined as her man. I hope she is taking good care of herself as well.

And you too Wilson, I have great respect for you. Who goes out of his way to help Jim with blog, and who posts all the entries to let us know how "The Man" is doing, when really his whole struggle is not any of our damn bussiness.

I mean the fact that we read his books does not give us rights to his personal and private struggles, but the fact that you all let us in shows the quality of people you all are. And it seems Jim wants to inspire other by letting us witness his ongoing battle. He must surely be a great man. I send to all of you love and prayers. God bless all of you and all of us.

I had the pleasure of meeting RJ at a book signing here in Illinois many years back. He and Pat Conroy demonstrate what truly great writing is. I am very sad, but know that I need to remain optimistic for him. Hope he gets well soon.

RJ,

You have managed to inspire me since I read my first Wheel of Time book, years back. I hope you may continue to do so for many decades to come.

Prayers and light be with you all. May the coming of spring and the warmth of the sun bring you all a renewed strength and an increase of energy. May joy, friendship, love, and humor speed the days to healing and recovery even when the shadows lengthen, and may Mr. Jordan's angel remain vigilant!

Blessings to you all,

RJ, you certainly have kept your guardian angel busy throughout your lifetime! Have pity on the poor creature and get well soon! It sounds like he needs a vacation.

Keeping you and Harriet, Wilson and Janet and the kids in my prayers.

Thanks for the update, I hope that RJ will overcome this disease and wish him well, if he is as skilled at staying alive as he is at writing I doubt anything will ever get to him tho. Keep fighting it.

Again, refuah shlema, perfect healing and peace.

And to reassure you and Dr. Stubbe, adrenal insufficiency only occurs when you have been on dexamethasone a long time and are abruptly removed from it. And the symptoms occur very soon after the abrupt discontinuation. Having been on this regimen myself, I know that RJ's physicians are smart enough to do this right and avoid this possible complication.

Dear Mr. Jordan,

My husband introduced me to your work when we were first married 8 years ago. Since then you have been our constant companion on our road trips via book on tape. Our traveling includes trips from NC to MI to PA to ME visiting family and taking vacations. Your writing has become a topic of discussion and helped to bring us closer as a couple. With the delivery of our first child 2 months away I look forward to sharing you with our budding family. I was saddened to hear of your sickness and now find myself wondering how you are on a regular basis. Thank you for the blog! I hope only the best for you. We think of you often wishing you well even though we have never met.

Yours truly

Matkat

Mr. Jordan, Harriet, Wilson and all

The strain of the crisis Mr, Jordan is facing just amazes me everyday. I can only fathom how this would effect my family. I think RJ is an inspiration. I find my self drawn to this site almost everyday. I always want to be among the first to read any updates in RJ's condition but also there is such hope and inspiration in this E community. Hearing RJ and Wilson talk about each other and there beautiful brides and then just letting us know how things are going creates such a fantastic image. Then all the out poring from other fans. When I found the books I had no idea I would find this amazing community or feel (in a small way) part of a mans struggle.

RJ my thoughts and prayers go out to you everyday. Thanks for writing and thanks for just being.

Be well

R.J. is not crazy and is dead on accurate about his Guardian Angel being male. According to the Old Testament Angels are male, re: The sons of God beheld the daughters of man and found them desireable and took them to wife. And in those days there were giants.

The giants were the result of Angels crossbreeding with humans, hence Goliath and his 4 brothers and others. Goliath was 9'6". Read the book, R.J. has.

R.J., I just want to say thanks for your service to America first and your story-telling second. Oh Remover of Obstacles you make J.R.R.Tolkein look like an amatuer.

I love learning all the various types of Dec 21,2012 mayan prophecy, I imagine one redeeming idea that has come of all of this, even if nothing takes place is that it has opened our minds to the possibility that we may not be here forever and that we need to hold dear the lifespan we have.
