There are two things , which I dislike a lot in the series - Ta'verenness and Balefire effect . The first one makes characters own successes and development artificial and seams like compultion made by the pattern ( or the author if you prefer ) . The second one is a very cheap kind of save-load mechanism , making almost anything and everyone returnable .

I think that only one true simple FM friendship shown in WoT is Birgitte and Mat , the other ones are guiding or alliance . Egwene and Rand relations are both guidance and alliance , they never discuss their inner problems each other , what is mean friendship , imho .

They don't need another one's authority . The Dragon is a famous hero , who did some realy impressive things and will do another several , like , for example , Hercules . The Amyrlin is Mother-Goddess figure , the Roofmistress of all , who watch that all be right under the Roof , like Isis or Cybele .
