  1. Just finished the Soldier's Son trilogy by Robin Hobb and have to say I was very happy with it.

Went to the bookstore yesterday to buy Elantris by Brandon Sanderson and came home with Elantris, The First Complete Tale of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach by Steven Erikson, and the entire First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

    Currently reading Elantris.

  2. Been reading the "Soldier's Son" trilogy by Robin Hobb. Currently about 150 pages into the third book; "Renegades Magic". Quite enjoyed it so far, not as good as the Assassin or Tawny Man trilogies but certainly on par with the Liveships story I feel.

  3. I'm about halfway through the first Malazon book. Still not 100% sure whether I'll buy the second book...

Do NOT give up on the series before book 2. Deadhouse Gates (Book 2) and Memories of Ice (Book 3) are amazing and much much better than Gardens of the Moon.

  4. I just finished The Crippled God yesterday, and with it The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Not really sure what to say about it. The book was amazing but it's always sad when a series is finished.

Took me a better part of a year to read the entire thing as well. Not sure what I'll be reading next.

  5. Have decided to read Mistborn Book 1 The Final Empire before reading aSoIaF Book 2. Game of Thrones wasnt quite as good as I expected it to be. It has some very, very good parts(e.g the final chapter, which was brilliant!!), but I didn't find at any point that I needed to read on, and I found Eddard Stark a complete fool, not sure if thats a widespread opinion or not.

Am going to read Mistborn 1 and then decide on which series to complete 1st. Peoples thoughts on Mistborn would b welcome(would prefer no spoilers in any replies  )

Awesome series, great and unique magic system and awesome characters. Probably one of my favourites.

  6. DoD spoilers follow:

Did anyone else find that the parts in the Wasteland with the Snake and the K'chain Che Malle were pretty boring? I mean I absolutely love the parts with the Letherii and Malazans, and the Perish parts to an extent. The Barghast parts are also quite interesting but my god the Wasteland stuff drags.

The K'chain Che Malle and Snake parts are incredibly important, so pay very close attention to everything, cause in TCG he's going to pop quiz you like a sledgehammer to the face. In fact he'll quiz the hell out of you about the K'chain at the end of DoD as well. You really have to think of DoD and TCG as one book. There's nothing in either that's not vitally important.

Sigh.. I guess you're gonna tell me the Shake storyline is super important as well?

Thank god for the Malazans, Tehol, Khundryl and Perish.

The Shake remain disconnected from the main plotline, and could have been removed with no change to the plot. And one of the big problems I have with Erikson is that for all he has some wonderful stuff in there, there does tend to be an awful lot of really boring stuff as well.

I have the exact same thing. I've been enjoying MBOTF a lot, so much so it's probably my favorite Fantasy series, if not THE favorite. But there are some parts that just don't do it for me at all.

  8. Currently reading Dust of Dreams (Only got that and The Crippled God left of the series  )

  9. 200 Pages left of Toll the Hounds

(Dont read the spoiler tags unless youve read the book/isn't planning on reading it - ever.

And this book is flaming depressing! Murillio dead, Mallet dead, Bluepearl dead, Seerdomin and Salind apparently burned, I know Anomander is going to die, Banisk died (the city!), Kedeviss dead, Clip possessed, too many downs and too few ups! Still a great book though

  10.

Deadhouse Gates (Book 2) and Memories of ice (Book 3) are mind blowingly awesome. I was on the fence after Gardens of the Moon as well, but the two next books sealed the deal for me.

I agree. I am reading House of Chains now and it too is awesome. There is a huge cast of characters in this series but it comes back to a core of those in each book.

The overall storyline is vast as well. The planning that must have gone into the creation of this series is impressive.

A little warning. While Deadhouse Gates was truly epic, the cast is almost entirely defferent, as are the locations. Don't let that stop you though. Your patience will be rewarded. Memories of Ice comes back to the original cast and answers some questions from the first two books.

Do yourself a favor and read on.

Well theres Kalam, Fiddler (yay!), Apsalar and Crokus so you dont feel too lost.

  11. Just read Gardens of the Moons from the Book of the Fallen series. Are all the books in this similar style? I had a hard time reading this. Just when I felt I was getting to know Whiskyjack and the whole gang, it shifts over to a total different set of characters that I had to get to know. Then I had a hard time figuring out what was actually happening in the end.

Specifically the parts where Paran fights a tree. Somehow a house is made out of it. What's an Azath? Suddenly Vorcan is the major antagonist but is saved. A major antagonist (Tennshyn) throughout the book doesn't even appear in the end. I'm not trying to complain. The storyline after retrospect was very good. It's just frustrating to read the first time through.

Although I'd have to say, Kruppe is very fun to read.

I assume you mean Tayschrenn? Why does he have to appear towards the end of the book? It's a series, his status as an antagonist and whether he's a bad boy or not is addressed in later books. And an Azath is a being that strives for balance. In essence its a "house" that serves as a prison designed to lock up extremely powerful entities, such as Raest the Jaghut Tyrant. Oh and yes there are a shit ton of characters in MBOTF, get used to it ;)

Tayschrenn, yes. I totally annihilated his name lol. I see your point. Thanks for the explanation on an Azath. I just have this feeling that I'm gonna get frustrated with this series. The only things that are keeping my interest are the Paran/Tattersail storyline and Tayschrenn. And I want to see what Quick Ben's powers are. Since he was good enough to win that cage match thing a while back. Meh...I'll give the next book a shot.

  13. Finished Deadhouse Gates (finally) and started Memories of Ice. DG was fantastic. Once I found the time to sit down with it I couldn't put it down. Hope MoI is the same.

It's just as good if not better than DG imo, hard to rank them.

  14. Just finished Bonehunters, and I loved it. Personally thought it was easily the third best book in the series so far (After Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice on a shared first place).

Hoping to pick up Reapers Gale tomorrow.

  15. Just finished Midnight Tides by Steven Ericson. Man that was a slow read. Not that I didn't like it, some of the characters were amazing (Bugg and Tehol anyone?) and the end was certainly dramatic enough, even if it didn't explain how Trull is shorn from his brothers and family.

Going to purchase Bonehunters today and start reading that.

You thought MT was slow? Oh dude. RG and TtH are going to kill you!

Both are really good though. It just become even more apparent then ever before that nothing happens until the last 200 pages.

It's not so much that its a slow/boring read, rather that I found it hard to get thrown into a completely new world with completely new characters 5 books into a series. The book itself was great but it felt almost like starting a new series, which always means I take much much longer to finish the book. Kinda like how I spent almost a month with Gardens of the Moon but Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice took me under a week.

The Crimson Guardsmen also made me speed up a lot, nice to have some reference to the world of the previous books.

    Still a great book though.

  17. Currently reading three books.

Memories of Ice (Malazan Book of the Fallen) by Steven Erikson

Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Also reading a Norwegian book about soldiers in Afghanistan called "Med Mandat til å Drepe", directly translated it's "With license to kill".

Hoping to finish all of them before I get Towers of Midnight :P

  18. Ohhh, your going from Ian Esselemont aswell. Not just Erikson's storyline.

Jee, I have no idea to be honest, I havent read Esselemonts books in the series so i wouldnt know.

I thought you meant Midnight Tides and stuff, because it is set years before the first book.

I agree with the order of the Erikson novels that you have stated, I am not sure where the Esselemont books fit in though.

Yeah it's how the other stories fit in that confused me :D
