  1. I have decided to try something different than my usual genres of books.

Has anyone here read anything from the alternate-history sub-genre of science fiction?

Currently, I am reading 1634: The Baltic War (the Ring of Fire series) by Eric Flint and David Weber.

I just googled the series a little bit, sounds pretty interesting... How are you finding it so far?

  2. Finished King of Thorns, not a huge fan of the whole "4 years earlier" model. Hope the next one (presumably Emperor of Thorns) wont do the same.

Currently reading The Many Deaths of the Black Company and so far I'm surprised by how engaging Water Sleeps is. The books had taken a turn for the worse in the last few entries but these are great.

  3. Just finished Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. Currently have Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss, The Many Deaths of The Black Company by Glen Cook siting on my shelf. Also have King of Thorns by Mark Lawrence and Forge of Darkness by Steven Erikson shipping from Amazon shortly.

    Oh the choices...

  4. Just finished the second Omnibus edition of The Black Company. Series is still holding strong for me, I was especially surprised at how much I enjoyed the new characters in The Silver Spike (Smeds, Fish and crew).

Waiting for "The Return of the Black Company" that I ordered from Amazon now.

  5. Finished the last book of the Black Company, Soldiers Live. I'm curious if there will be more. While the story does come to a satisfying end it is left in such a way that there is more story that can be told.

He has two more books planned.. so he says.. try getting the Dread Empire omnibus its good too. I'm starting DeadHouse Gates, and then A Memory of ice.

I was going to ask what people thought of Dread Empire, curious to start it once I finish The Black Company.

  6. Just finished the first omnibus edition of the Black Company series. Really enjoying it now, can't wait to get started on Books of the South (Still don't understand why the first Omnibus isn't called Books of the North).

  7. Finished the first Black Company book, onto the second now (Darkness never sleeps?). The series has grown on me since about halfway through book 1. Enjoying it now.

Did you finish the first Chronicle (contains first three books) or just the first Book The Black Company?

Just the first actual book. Still have 2 more in the first chronicle. Not had much time for reading lately :(

  8. I also just started The Black Company and I have to say it's surprisingly hard to get used to the first person POV.

I have the omnibus edition. The first person has somewhat put me off really trying to read it. I've only read one series that with first person POV and that was The Saga of Darren Shan from my childhood. I only re-read it for nostalgia's sake .

Exact same here actually. Having a real hard time getting into reading "I did this, and I remember that" all the time. And yes I also read the Darren Shan books (and the Demonata ones too) but mostly because I started them when I was far younger.

  9. I picked up Elantris and Warbreaker the other day. Currently reading Elantris. Already like Raoden. He didn't fall to pieces when he was chucked into the city. He has strength. I like that. Dislike Hrathen. Not because he's religious, but because he's not the right religion ! Reserving judgement on Sarene.

Nobody likes zealots anyway. That said, Hrathen is pretty badass.

  10. Decided to finally take the plunge and started Stephen King's, The Gunslinger, last night. Hopefully I'm in for a long, exciting ride.

It has its moments - some extremely good. If you've read a decent amount of his other stories, it's absolutely fascinating how many things you'll recognize from other books.

The ending... is controversial. Let me just say that. I was satisfied, many were livid.

Yeah, I've read most of his other somewhat better received books... The Stand, It, Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary, The Dark Half, and some of his newer stuff like Duma Key, Under the Dome, Cell, Dreamcatcher and bits and pieces of his short stories. I always like his books. I think I own all of them as I've picked up any and everything I find in used books stores. I've always known if I went down this Dark Tower path I would have to put everything else aside for a while. I'm pretty excited, I think I'm down for it. Thanks for your thoughts!

Heh good thing you've read Salem's Lot, will come in handy while reading the DT ;)

  11. ok... im convinced. I saw this at the bookstore and passed on it cause of the modern era. Something to read later when it dropped in price (was like $32 dollars which is really expensive for a book, especially one that size).

    Maybe next pay check :)

You wont regret it. Obviously the books has the traditionally awesome Mistborn action sequences, but mixed into that is Steampunk/Wild West technology, great dialogue and a really engaging story and characters. I think I enjoyed Alloy of Law even more than the original trilogy to be honest.

  12. Finished Elantris and The Blade Itself now. Currently reading Before They Are Hanged and really enjoying the trilogy.

I have this book on my shelf yet to read. Glad to hear you liked it.

If you're talking about the First Law books, when I was finished I wasn't very satisfied.

  13. Just got my large shipment of books from Amazon.

Currently reading Orb, Sceptre, Throne by Esselemont. After that Ill move on to Alloy of Law, then Way of Kings and the first 3 books in Black Company (not sure which one Ill do first) and then probably Heroes and Best Served Cold by Abercrombie.
