I think the most likely reason for the change is to give Egwene a real reason to join them when they leave Emond's Field. The reason in the book is silly and not realistic, and although I understand people who say that is part of her character growth, I also see why they would want to change it.
They could have just let Moiraine tell her she could channel and has to go to Tar Valon, but they probably want that build up to come later.
