  1. I had no idea how to read most of the pronunciation "guidelines" in the glossary when I first read the books and was trying to figure that stuff out. They make a bit more sense now that I can sort of, maybe, imagine how an English-speaker would read them, but personally, give me phonetic transcription any day over moor-GAYZ etc.

  2. I think the worse one for people has to be Taim.

I mean, come on, everyone reads it as TAME.

    ...Well, actually... :D

I always read it as "time", because that's the Finnish pronunciation.

  3. Yeah alright, it probably wouldn't have been Aviendha who told Nynaeve at any point, but I do believe that Nynaeve would have been let in on the secret eventually. Either Rand himself telling her, or Elayne (with Rand's consent), at some point a bit later when things have calmed down. Same with Tam; I'm not buying that they would have just let him live the rest of his life thinking his son dead.

  4. I don't think Aviendha would have told Nynaeve at that point. It was too big of a thing to be discussed in the middle of all the things going on, especially as it was not meant to become common knowledge. But I think Nynaeve suspected, and Cadsuane suspected something at least, and they probably wouldn't have spread the information on Moridin's identity too widely, either, because having a real live Forsaken in the camp would probably have caused someone to do something stupid. So I imagine his disappearance was probably relatively easy to gloss over.

  5. I've been wondering about this for the past few days and finally realised that hey, I can ask here. Aren't I the bright one. Anyway.

In the Age of Legends people were born with two names and earned the third one. As we all know. But which of the names, on those known AoL characters who have three names, is the special earned name?

I used to just assume it was the last one, until I came across Ilyena's wiki page, which tells me that her full name was Ilyena Moerelle Dalisar until she married Lews Therin Telamon, at which point she became Ilyena Therin Moerelle. (I'm assuming this info is from the Big White Book because the wiki doesn't cite sources on this one. My BWB is sadly half a continent away so I can't check.) And it doesn't seem likely to me that they would give up the earned name upon getting married, so... Does this make it safe to assume that the middle name is the earned one?

  6. This is your result in its entirety:

    Blue Ajah: 6
    Brown Ajah: 5
    White Ajah: 5
    Gray Ajah: 4
    Green Ajah: 2
    Red Ajah: 2
    Yellow Ajah: 1

Hmm... Maybe, but I feel more close to the White Ajah at heart.

  7. The walk from the South Harbor to the Tower grounds and into the White Tower itself was an exercise in discipline; Aislin had considered herself a relatively well-educated and widely travelled woman for her age, but this city defied everything she had taught herself along the years of travelling with her father. She felt like a complete country bumpkin, trying to look at everything at once, eyes wide with wonder. It took every ounce of discipline in her body to not stop and stare; Amelia Sedai would not appreciate such silliness. So Aislin trailed after the Aes Sedai, trying to emulate her stance and expression to the best of her abilities. She managed the former, to some extent, but as for the latter, it simply was not possible to remain so indifferent to the grandeur around her.

The White Tower was no less impressive on the inside; wide corridors and high ceilings, majestic flights of stairs, tapestries and carvings and chandeliers. Aes Sedai in colourful silks glided by, some of them wearing their shawls but most without, some with one or more Warders trailing after them. Younger women in white were clearly trying to copy the Aes Sedai’s composure, but not quite succeeding. Ordinary women in all kinds of dresses, clearly from many different countries. Aislin was irrationally glad that she had opted for the dark grey travelling dress for the arrival in the city rather than anything prettier; she wasn’t here to impress anyone with her wardrobe, and looking at the heaps of jewellery on some of the women she passed, impressing anyone at all would obviously have been an impossibility.

Besides, soon enough she would be wearing white — just like that poor girl who nearly tripped over her feet in her haste to curtsy as Amelia Sedai passed her. Aislin grimaced slightly. Surely she would never act as clumsy as that.

Then they reached a door and Amelia Sedai came to a halt. “This is the Mistress of Novices’ study,” she said in her crisp voice. “You will wait here until she has time to see you. She will instruct you in getting started with your new life here in the White Tower.”

“Yes, Amelia Sedai,” Aislin replied, trying to sound calm and confident. She was fairly sure she succeeded. “Thank you, Amelia Sedai.” A heartbeat later she remembered that she was probably supposed to curtsy, and she did so, a faint blush of embarrassment colouring her cheeks.

The Aes Sedai gave her an appraising look. “Goodbye, child. I wish you the best and hope to see you earn the shawl one day.” Her mouth twitched slightly in what might have been a smile. “Even if I doubt you will be choosing the Green. Oh well. Good luck.”

“Thank you—” Aislin began, but the Aes Sedai was already gliding away. “—Amelia Sedai,” she finished anyway, with another curtsy, just for the sake of practice. Amelia Sedai ‘doubted’ Aislin would choose the Green? She didn’t know much about Ajahs, but if the Green Ajah were all like the stern yet temperamental woman Aislin had travelled with, she found herself inclined to agree with the Aes Sedai. Of course, it all depended on what the other options were. It would not do to jump into conclusions without knowing the facts first.

Well, she suspected she would have plenty of time to learn and to decide, if the training took half as long as Amelia Sedai had told her…

  8.

Question related to balefire. This is mainly a hypothetical question, and it's really just to use in a "Werewolf" game on another forum.

    Let there be 4 people - A, B, C and D.

The idea - B wishes to kill A. B shoots an arrow but C jumps in front of A and takes the arrow. C is injured and A survives.

Should D balefire C so that C did not exist prior to the jump, would A then be affected by arrow?

It depends on when B was balefire'd and the strength of D's channeling.  The stronger the balefire, the farther back time is affected.  If D's balefire is weak enough that it only affects time by a second or two, A would probably still be safe.  On the other hand, if D's went back by a minute or so, then A would probably be calling out "Message for you sir!"  as he drops dead from the arrow.

The bolded bit seems to indicate that Vieira meant the balefire to be strong enough to remove C from the pattern before they intercepted the arrow.

And yes, it would seem most logical to me that A would, in this scenario, be hit by the arrow.

  9. Is it more or does it seem like Ishamael hasn't actually done much since the series began?

He killed a Ta'veren in Hawkwing. He started the trolloc wars and kept the world in this sorry state but since the series began he's been doing bugger all but fail. He was said to be saner as Moridin but he still hasn't been doing much and he's angry ALL the time.

Isn't he meant to be smart? Wasn't he all "Rand is dancing to my tune"

I was getting excited for a second there I thought he was up to something competent.

I read a very good post somewhere on these here forums about how Moridin seemed to spend most of his time towards the end of the series "getting high on True Power"... But I can't seem to find it again. (It was probably in the AMoL forum.)

As in, no, it's not just you. And damn, I really want to find that post again because I wanted to reference it somewhere.
