  1. Everything happened so quickly that Eva did not have the chance nor the opportunity to do anything before the bandits ran off down an alley with the trainee in pursuit. Dresses were not designed for running so Evaida followed at a brisk walk, the fool boy had no idea what the thieves were capable off and two against one – even a well trained one – were not good odds. She followed the trail of blood around the corner not knowing whose blood it was or what she might find. Still holding the sweet life of Saidar she paused only a second to take in the scene. The two thieves part way down the alley with mischievous grins, a large balding man wielding a mace and the trainee in the middle.

Eva wove a thick thread of air stopping the mace mid swing and another two threads stopping the two smaller thieves in their tracks. It was clear from the confusion on all of their faces that they had not yet spotted her. “You are either incredible brazen or incredibly foolish, the lot of you†she stepped around the large man coming into view of the others in the alley. “By the looks of things I would suggest the latter†she said as she plucked the mace out of the balding mans large hand. Evaida turned to the trainee who still had his weapon raised “Put that thing away, you could take someone’s eye out†before walking over to the thieves. Taking the knife from the first and the wallet from the second and retuning it to the trainee.

She noticed crimson patch growing on the trainee’s side “Oh dear, we can not have you wandering around like a gutted fish†she took his head in her hands Healing the shallow cut, it was only minor but best not left unattended. Occasionally people in the main street would glance down the alley then quicken their step and those that did not only stayed long enough to realise there was an Aes Sedai involved. Moments later a group of Tower Guards entered the alley much to Eva’s relief. The whole situation unsettled her – not that she let it show – what was the world coming to? That even the streets of Tar Valon were not safe.

Once the three men were safely in custody Eva turned her attention back to the trainee. The boy stood almost a whole head taller than her, well built with piercing green eyes. “You are a Tower trainee unless I am mistaken†she spoke with a hint of question, it had been while since she had last visited the yards and his was a face she did not recognise. “I am Evaida Sedai of the Gray Ajah. This was certainly not what I thought I would be doing when I woke up this morningâ€

  2. A hot wind whipped down the street of Tar Valon as Evaida wandered leisurely along. As like many new Sisters she had been tempted to wear her Gray fringed shawl so that she would be recognised as Aes Sedai, but a warm summers day was no time to be wearing a shawl so her serpent ring would have to suffice. Every now and then someone would notice her ring and incline their head but for the most part Eva blended into the crowed. Since the day after she was raised to the shawl Evaida scoured the markets in search of something almost as rare as an Aiel with a sword – a good horse, and today was no different. Much to her disappoint today was all too similar to every other day before it – nothing. She must have looked at hundreds of animals in the past weeks and not one of them was the one she was looking for. There were short shaggy ponies, and tall sleek war horses, elegant grays from Noble stables, and geriatric bays from the out-skirting farms. She didn’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of horse dealers trying to rip her off.

She wandered into the corral where Jon stood holding a tall gleaming chestnut gelding. Eva had purposefully worn her blue riding dress as Jon had promised he found a horse worthy of a trial at least. The animal was well conformed, good length of neck and back, strong legs and well muscled shoulders and hindquarters.

“How old is he?†Evaida asked as she approached, Jon knew well enough not to lie to her but she still checked the gelding’s teeth when he replied that it was 5 years old. She took up on his offer for a boost into the saddle and pressed the animal forward when Jon released the reins. It did not matter what horse she sat on Eva always felt more comfortable in the saddle than she did on her own two feet. The horse was responsive and forward with nice smooth paces but it was only a few minutes before she dismounted and led the horse back to the dealer.

“Not the one Evaida Sedai?†Jon asked with resignation “Not the one Jon, he doesn’t have enough…spirit†Eva replied handing over the reins “A fine horse indeed but I need something more…â€

“Firey?†Jon raised his brow in question “I know exactly what you are looking for but unfortunately an animal like that is hard to come by, you know what Tairens are like with their horses†he winked

“All to well dear Jon all too well. Maybe we will have more luck tomorrow†Eva knew the chances of that were slim, the only way she was going to find the right horse would be going back to Tear and she would not resort to that until absolutely necessary.

Walking back towards the Tower Evaida took in her surrounds. She certainly did not miss the constraints of the banded dress but the responsibility of being an Aes Sedai could be a wary burden particularly when you are the newest member of the Ajah. It was enough to make her drag her feet a little to prolong her time in the city. It was then that she noticed a young man walking just ahead of her, his gait was similar to that of a warder though not quite the stalking wolf of a fully trained Gaidin – a tower trainee perhaps.

Eva watched in alarm as another younger man approached him from behind blade in one hand while the other dipped into the trainees pocket inconspicuously relieving him of his wallet. Pick pockets and cut purses were rare in Tar Valon but it did not mean there was no one game enough to try. Without hesitation Evaida embraced Saidar and pushed through the crowed as the commotion began…

  3. ooc: Eek sorry for the late reply, busy busy busy :D

    IC:

Nodding at Moa's reply Evaida continued down the hall, it was not far now, the Mistress of Novices office was just around the corner a few doors down. She noticed the new girl's eyes well up, the poor thing was probably overwhelmed as many girls were on arrival. "It is not all that bad here, they keep you busy and you will not have alot of spare time. The classes are interesting and the chores can be back breaking but it is all worth it in the end. Not to worry, you will be navigating these halls like you have lived here all your life, just give it a few days."

Slowing on approach to Faerzyne Sedai's door Evaida turned to Moa "Now remember this is the Mistress of Novices, you do not want to be spending all your days as a novice in here so best be respectful and you will be fine" she said with a reassuring smile, before knocking and entering.

She met Faerzyne's steady gaze, the woman had to know when Evie was going to be tested for the shawl but she gave away nothing. Announcing Moa's arrival Evaida curtsied and waited outside, she would not leave a new girl to navigate her way to the novice quarters by herself...

  4. It was hard to hold back a giggle with the newcomer mistaking her for a Sister, but Evaida took it as a compliment, it would not be long until she was truly worthy of the title "Oh dear do not let any Sisters hear you say that" she said with a wink "I am only an Accepted" Evie tugged at the banded dress she wore, it was cut in such a way that it would be unflattering on any woman, she could not wait to be rid of it and wear some proper dresses. "The mistress of novices? I think I can help you with that follow me" Evaida led the way into the Tower and the maze of stairs and corridors.

"My name is Evaida by the way. Best pay close attention so that you can find your way around. The halls and corridors can look very similar when you first arrive and it is easy to get yourself lost." she kept leisurely pace to allow the other young woman to take in her surroundings, it could be quite daunting finding yourself in such a large place especially if you were not from a city. "So ahh... sorry I did not catch your name" she waited for the newcomer to give her name before continuing "That is fine looking mare that you brought, any Tairen blood in her?" Evie always had an eye for horses and could talk about them for hours, never passing on an opportunity to introduce the topic.

  5. Leading the girls towards the market, Evaida began to wonder what had cause the whole ordeal in the first place. It seemed that Rossa had fainted with all the smoke, Evie had practically grown up in her fathers smithy so such thing did not really bother her. Still she felt like there was more to the story, like the novice was holding something back. She could read between the lines and it was obvious that the girl did not want to talk about it so Evie decided to let it go.

Lost in her thoughts Evie found herself in the middle of the buzzing crowed of the market. It was an ordered chaos as nothing in Tar Valon was truley chaotic. Stall keepers shouting their weares customers bargaining, sheep bleeting in pens, and the odd horse and cart trying to push their way through the people. There was nothing like the excitement of the market.

"If you two would purchase a reel of strong cotten and a few balls of colourful yarn, I have some other business to attend to. Hopefully I won't be to long but feel free to browse the stalls for a little while as you wait" she handed them some more coin and plunged into the crowed. There was someone she wished to see and with any luck they would have what she wanted...

  6. Spare time was a rare commodity for a White Tower initiate and there was nothing that Evaida loved more to fill that time than riding around Tar Valon. She had seen the sights a hundred times before, it was more the slight taste of freedom that made it so enjoyable. The gates to the Tower stables came into view as they trotted around the corner. The sight was enough to make Evie sigh, soon her brief taste of freedom would be over and it would be back to the books.

Akai pranced as they entered into the stable yard, the gray stallion tossing his head impatiently. He was getting old but he still had the spirit of a young colt and their short outings into the city were never enough to burn his energy. Evaida tried to take him out for a ride as often as possible but as studies and chores took up most of her days she had little enough time to rest let alone exercise her horse.

Handing the stable hand the reins she watched with regret as Akai was led away. Evie savoured every second of their outings and never looked forward to that moment when they went their separate ways. Turning back to the Tower Evaida noticed a young woman looking bewildered at the Tower entrance.

Wandering over she appeared the blonde woman’s side apparently unnoticed. It was not unusual for new comers to be overawed by the magnificence of the Tar Valon architecture and magnitude of the White Tower. "Can I help you?" she asked with a reassuring smile.

  7. Looking at the two girls covered in soot desperately trying to apologize Evaida smiled. It seemed like another life time when she was in a similar delemma as they, messing up a chore and facing possible punishment for it. The sister that had caught her with the warder trainee had shown mercy and she would show the same mercy to Rossa and Faile, "What is done, is done. There is no use crying over spilt milk, let me have a look at that silk" she took the bundle and examined the fabric "A lovely choice, if a little stained" she winked "Nothing that can not be fixed" You were not meant to use the One Power to do chores but on a number of occasions Evie had seen sisters use this particular weave to fix their dresses - afterall an Aes Sedai must always look her best. They could not go back with dirty silk and they did not have enough coin to buy more so she figured just this one time it would be acceptable.

Using small threads of air and water Evaida combed the fabric and watched the spots dissappear, with a final touch fire to iron out the creases. "There, as good as new" she folded the silk carefully and tied it back in the bundle. "You are probably a little hungry after the Healing" she handed Rossa a candied apple "And all that rescueing must have you famished" Evie said as she handed Faile a candied apple as well, taking the last one for herself. "There are just a few more little bits and pieces left to get. We can't have Tower initiates wandering around like you have just been and a tavern brawl." she performed the stain removal weave again on their dresses until they were as white as freshly fallen snow "You are not to use this weave for chores, especially around sisters or you will be doing laundry for the rest of your time as a novice"

Taking another bite of her candied apple she looked the pair up and down, their dresses were clean but their faces and hands were still covered in soot "Best clean youselves up so we can head for the market, that is of course if you are feeling up to it?"

  8. Surrounded by the feathers of quills and the jars of ink in all the colours of the rainbow, Evaida took in the slightly musty smell of the Scribe shop. She had always loved shopping, whether it be dresses or fruit, just the atmoshpere of life was enough to liven the spirit. Browsing through the various sizes of quills until she finally found what she was after, a good quality fine tip and a small jar of black ink. Taking it to the counter at the back of the shop she dropped a small curtsey to the withered shop keeper "Good day Master Talbot" causing a cracked small to appear on the old mans face.

"A good day for seeing your face dear Evaida. Still wearing the banded dress I see" he laughed as he took the items and began to pack them in a canvas scrip "Not for much longer I hope. Can I have ten sheets of heavy duty parchment as well please?"

The shop keeper shuffled into the back room before reappearing with a wad of parchment which he rolled up and packed in the scrip with the quill and ink. Master Talbot was one of her favourite shop keepers in Tar Valon, an honest man with a good heart and strange sense of humour. Handing over the coins Evie took the scrip and with a final curtsey made her way back out into the street.

It was only a short walk to the grocers and Evaida half expected Faile and Rossa to waiting for her after the time she took deciding on a quill. The novices were no where to be seen when she arrived so she purchased 3 candied apples and walked back up the street in the direction she had seen them go. Maybe they had as much trouble deciding on material as she did quills. Then again there was a chance that they had wandered off and got themselves lost. Either way if they were going to have any spare time at the market they had to get going.

Up ahead she saw a thick cloud of smoke emerge from a smithy. Thinking nothing of it Evaida walked towards it as that was the direction Faile and Rossa had gone. Using her cloak to cover her face she walked through paying careful attention not to bump into anyone only to almost trip over what looked like a body on the other side of the smoke cloud. She looked down to find Faile kneeling next to Rossa. "What happened here?" she asked immediatly kneeling down beside Rossa, taking the girl's head in her hands and Delving. She had not so much of a Talent for Healing but more a nack for picking up weaves just by watching them done. After a few sessions in the infirmary the more basic weaves of Healing came naturally. Releasing Rossa she waited for the Novices to explain...

  9. Evaida could not help but be a little disappointed. She still had not managed to cheer Rahiendazar up, she had tried everything she could think off.

"He is a good horse accepted, I am sure he did very well bringing you here"

“Yes he is a good horse, of the top Tairen bloodlines too†her voice held a hint of sadness, Evie knew she would have to give him up eventually, he would be happy in a large field with plenty of grass but she couldn’t help but feel like she was loosing her best friend. “Anyway, I am sure you will want to be getting to your room and settling in†she said as she lead Rahien back into the Tower “If you need anything or even just someone to talk to my room is on the second level of the Accepted quarters right in the very middle and any interruption from study is usually a welcome one†Evaida hoped that the novice would one day accept her new life in the White Tower and perhaps even come to enjoy it.

  10. Niether of the girls had any questions so with the market near the North Harbour in mind, Evaida kept on the road the lead directly from the Tower to the Harbour. "I should probably make the introductions" she said as they kept walking, Evie remembered their names from when she singled them out for the chore "I am Evaida al'Marnae. If my memory serves me correctly this is Faile" she indicated to the slightly shorter young woman to her left and waited for a nod of confirmation before continuing "and this is Rossa" she smiled at the taller girl to her right. The two were definitely from different regions, opposite sides of the world probably but she could not pin point exactly where they may have originated from.

All the buildings they passed sat neatly along the street. The architecture here was the kind you could never grow weary of, every building was unique and not one looked out of place. Stopping outside a scribe shop Evaida turned to the novices “Now the Sister wanted some heavier material for a winter cloak and some silk for a dress†she spoke as she handed them a few gold marks each “it is up to you as to what colour, however the cloak should be reasonably nondescript and the silk is not to be too loud†some Aes Sedai insisted on wearing only the colour of their ajah but Evie could see how it would become as monotonous as wearing novice whites or the banded dresses she had grown sick of wearing. “You will find what you need in this street but try not to go any further than 4 blocks, if you get lost it will take me all day to find you so stay together. Once you are done meet me at the grocers a few doors up from here†with that she sent them on their way and went into the scribe shop. Evaida had considered giving them a tracking stone each, it was a weave she had experimented with not long after she was given a tracking stone herself to carry as a novice. She had not quite perfected it but it would have been enough to ensure the novices did not wander too far. She would just have to trust the girls and wait and see.

  11. It was a typical Autumn day in Tar Valon, the sky was over cast but the sun peaked through a gap in the clouds. The air held a slight chill and Evaida drew her banded cloak around her to keep the out occasional cold breeze. She stood on the steps of the White Tower, she hadn't been there long and she did not expect to be their much longer. The novices she commandeered were probably just as excited to get out of the Tower as she was. As if they had read her mind, two girls in novice whites appeared at her side. “We best be on our way if we are to get everything with a few detours†she smiled slyly, clutching the list a Gray Sister had given her earlier in one hand and the pouch of coins in the other.

The items on the list were nothing unusual, material, yarn, cotton, quills, ink, parchment and a few other things. Sisters often recruited Accepted to run such errands to allow them to get out and take a break from study. Besides Evie was never one to pass up an opportunity to refine her bargaining skills. “Once we get to the main street it might be quicker if we split up. I will get the quills, ink and parchment and you two can start with the material†it would be interesting to see how they went with the task, Evaida remembered when she was given the task of buying material for the first time, it certainly was not as easy as it sounded. Being an initiate of the Tower meant that most people payed you the proper respect however being in novice whites sometimes gave people the impression of naivety. “Any questions?â€

  12. There was something, if only for a brief moment, that changed in Rahien, a slight twinkle in her eye when they settled on the rows and rows of books. But the second Evaida thought she saw something it was gone. With a short walk through the book cases pointing out the different sections Evie headed back into the corridors with one more place in mind. Her favourite place in the whole of the Tower.

Taking the quickest route to the nearest exit brought them out into the gardens. Following the paths that she knew like the back of her hand Evaida lead Rahien towards the back of the Tower grounds. "Some of these trees are as old as the Tower itself and you will find that even though the gardens are a popular place to study there is always a quiet corner to be found. Through there," Evie nodded at a gate just to their left that was framed by two large stone herons "is the heron garden. My mentor took me there when I first came to the Tower. It hold alot of memories. In fact I discovered my block in there. I am a wilder too." she smiled at Rahien "But there is one more place I would like to show you."

Continuing down the path they found themselves in the stable yard. Taking in the smell of horses and hay, Evie followed the rows of stalls until she came to the one she was looking for. "This is my favourite place. If I am not studying or in class I am here." she produced a sugar cube from her belt pouch and fed it to the grey stallion reaching over the stable door "This my my horse Akai. He brought me to the Tower and I will retire him when I become Aes Sedai" she stroked old stallion on the forehead "Do you like horses?"

  13. Coming to a halt outside the novice quarters Evaida considered Rahien's answers. A budding brown perhaps? It was far too early to tell. "This will be home for the first few years at least" she looked up at the levels of novice rooms. The top level hadn't been used in years, standing as a symbol of the dwindling numbers in the Tower. "The rooms are not big but they are quite cosy and you will spend most of your time out and about with classes and such".

Turning back to the corridors Evie headed towards the library via the kitchen and dining halls. Still the new novice followed solemnly. Evaida paused just a moment to poke her head in the door of the kitchen before she could get dragged in to scrub some pots. “Hopefully you won’t have to spend much time in there†she said before moving on “The dining hall is one place you don’t want to be late for if you want to get a decent helping at meal timeâ€. Winding through the corridors Evie stopped outside a pair of large doors “You said you liked reading, well then you may like what lies behind these doors†she pushed the door open quietly to reveal the library “this is probably the largest collection of books in the world today, you could read one a day every day until you were a hundred and never read the same book twiceâ€. She perused over the masterful bookcases stacked with book and scrolls between glances at Rahien, there had to be some way to get the girl talking.

  14. Standing outside the Mistress of Novices office Evaida watched as novices and accepted alike scuttled past the dreaded door. There were only a few reasons why you would go to this office and most of them weren't pleasant. Just when she thought she would be waiting all day Rahiendazar came through the door.

"Well, I guess I can officially welcome you to the White Tower" she said cheerfully hoping to liven the girls spirits to no avail “It looks like I will be your mentor. Come this way and I will show you to your roomâ€. They did not even reach the end of the hall when a novice came bursting out of Faerzyne’s office at an alarming pace headed for the stables, no doubt with instructions as to where Rahien’s belongings were to be taken. “Best pay close attention so you know where to go, the halls are very much alike and it is not hard to get yourself lost. So Rahien where do you hail from?†by the looks of her she was from the East, she was far to fair to be from as far south as Tear. Only a tad shorter than Evie, Rahien looked as though she could be Caihienen if a little tall.

“It is really not that bad here once you get use to the busy schedule. You won’t get a lot of spare time but you will get a free day every two weeks. What do you do with your spare time? Any hobbies…interests…?†Evaida glanced at the girl walking beside her whose face remained emotionless, there had to be something she could do to get even a hint of a smile from Rahien.

  15. Today was like every other day in the Tower, busy. There was never a dull moment for an Accepted such as Evaida and today she had the pleasure of greeting visitors in the main hall. It did not matter what time of day or what the weather may be there was always a petitioner wanting a dispute settled, a mother with a sick child to be healed or a girl wanting to be tested – although those were few and far between. Yes today was no different to any other day, or so Evaida thought.

Having just settled a disagreement between two rather fervent shopkeepers Evie was just about ready to have a break. Men always seemed to think they knew best and trying to reach a compromise between two of them was no easy task. Glancing around the room all the visitors seemed to be taken care of. She was just about to head to the kitchen to get something to settle her ravaging stomach when a small voice came from behind her.

"I can channel, i would like to be taken to someone who can enrol me… Please" the girl practically whispered

It was hard to hide her surprise, it certainly wasn’t everyday that a Wilder walked into the Tower let alone by herself. Evaida smiled warmly “Of course, follow me†there was no need to test the girl to be sure Evie could sense her ability, what made her wonder was how the girl knew. A Wilders ability could manifest itself in many different ways, often unbeknownst to the girl herself. Evaida had the spark inborn and did not find out until she came to the Tower.

The young woman followed silently behind as Evie led the way to the Mistress of Novices office. Slowing her pace a little she drew level with the girl. She seemed… solemn, which was unusual, most girls were ecstatic when they found out they could channel, depending of course on the circumstances. Originating for Tear, Evaida could understand a fear of channelling but somehow she felt there was more to the story.

Deep in thought she almost missed the corridor that led to Faerzyne Sedai’s office, taking a quick left she continued down the hall, their destination only a few doors away. “What is your name?†she broke the silence as they approached the door, taking a mental note of the girl’s reply, “I’m Evaida, and this is the Mistress of Novices office, Faerzyne Sedai will take care of your enrolment.â€

Knocking on the door, Evaida entered at the Gray sister’s summons. She had a great deal of respect for the Sister particularly because she was of the Ajah Evie aspired to but also because the Mistress of Novices was a woman that demanded respect. “Please excuse the interruption Aes Sedai, I have a young woman to be enrolled†curtsying deeply she ushered Rahien in and waited outside by Faerzyne’s instruction.

  16. Standing outside Kelgin's shop Evaida tapped her foot impatiently waiting for Maldrin to catch up. Had the boy even listened to word she said? Evie doubted it, she could have been talking about the weather for all the effect it would have. When he finally appeared through the crowd, Maldrin put the chest of money down "Um...Sorry?"he grinned, it was entirly infuriating!

Evaida merely arched an eyebrow, looking suitably unimpressed, she was still working on the Aes Sedai serenity sometimes she wondered how Sister kept themselves calm under such circumstances. Taking a small bag of coins from the chest "Wait here" she instructed before disappearing into the shop. Perhaps she shouldn't be so hard on the trainee, he was trying, however poor his effort was, but then again how else was he suppose to learn how to behave, he would have to learn self control if he was to become a warder. That aside Evie wandered to the back of the shop where Mistress Kelgin was bent over some needlework. At least this should be straight forward...

ooc: Sorry I took so long, computer keeps having a fit, this was actually my third attempt posting :? Oh well third time lucky :D

  17. It hadn’t been Evaida’s fault arriving to breakfast just a few moments too late, that brown sister had kept her up into the early hours scribing. It was not Evie’s fault that she struggled to drag herself out of bed in the mornings particularly when she had very little sleep, and it certainly was not her fault that Mistress Laras was in a bad mood today. Either way she was stuck with organising novices for this evening’s dinner service in the Aes Sedai dining room. It could have been worse, a lot worse in fact, at least she would not be scrubbing pots or turning the spit, how hard could it be to keep a group of novices in line?

It was not hard to tell those that were new to the Tower, it usually only took a few weeks to realise that you should never get caught looking like you have nothing to do, that was just an invitation for someone to fill that ‘spare time’ for you. Often you would see novices go scurrying in the wake of an Aes Sedai and occasionally an Accepted, at least if you appeared like you were going somewhere you were less likely to get singled out for a chore. Rounding the corner into the main hall Evaida spotted two novices chatting in the corner, just what she needed “You two follow me†she did not bother to check that they following she knew that they would be if they knew what was best for them. Dawdling was frowned upon in the Tower but shirking a chore was even worse, that was a lesson usually learnt in the first week as a Novice.

Evaida had already picked out a few novices during the day with strict instructions to be at the kitchen well before dinner service started. She hoped they were already there, if they weren’t it was Evaida that would get the blame from Mistress Laras. Pushing through the doors into the kitchen Evie gave a sigh of relief, as far as she could tell all the novices were there lined up and waiting to get started. Handing them each an apron she checked they were all presentable and neat, but at second count Evaida realised there was someone missing. She tried to remember who it was, she could remember the face but the name escaped her. Mistress Laras was doing her rounds of the kitchen, checking that everyone was pulling their weight and all the food was being prepared correctly, she was slowly but surely getting closer to Evaida and the Novices. Laras had been clear that she wanted no less than six novices for the service and there stood only five. If that last novice did not arrive soon, she and Evie would be spending the rest of the night scrubbing the scullery pots.

Mistress Laras was only a few feet away testing a pot of soup when the last novice came bursting through the door. Evaida threw the apron at her and turned to address Mistress Laras. The woman merely glanced at the girls, gave a nod of approval and moved on. Letting out the breath she didn’t realise she was holding Evie turned back to the novices “I should not have to remind you that you are serving Aes Sedai tonight and the utmost care must be taken. I do not want to see any dawdling, chatting, giggling or eavesdropping. Do not speak unless you are spoken to and do not forget your manners.†It was not in Evaida’s nature to lecture but the near miss with Laras had her on edge. “Now I want three of you to take those trays and begin serving the soup†she directed them to the silver trays that were already being laden with bowls. “The other three I would like serving the wine†she handed three large pitchers of hot spiced wine to the girls. “Any special requests from the sisters are to come to me first. Alright, lets get started†she said with a brief smile before leading the girls into the dining room.

  18. Has she been a whit quicker Evaida would have woven an invisible gag of air for the boy. Maldrin did not seem to know when to keep his mouth shut, nor the meaning of subtlety. The banker was painstakingly slow in retrieving the funds - no amount of waving her serpent ring seemed to make a difference - and Evie had no doubt it was because of Maldrin's comments. If this kept up they wouldn't even get half of the things on the list before sundown.

Evie thought perhaps carrying the money might keep the trainee quiet for awhile only to find it made him whine all the more. Making no attempt to hide her irritation as they made they way to the next port of call Evaida shot him a glare that could not be mistaken for anything other than annoyance. How could he be so blissfully unaware of his runaway mouth? Things were becoming clear as to how he got himself banned from Mistress Jornahn's shop, she certainly would not tolerate ignorant rudeness.

"What? I didn't do anything!" he protested with a confused look

Evaida rolled her eyes, did he really have no idea? That invisible gag was looking more and more inviting “It is not what you did Maldrin, it is what you said†she tried to keep the bite from her voice “Perhaps it might be best if you did not say anything at all! Unless of course you can learn to control that tongue of yours.†That seemed unlikely but at least it may make him think about what he says before he says it.

Approaching the dressmakers shop Evaida slowed “It may be best if you stayed outside†Mistress Kelgin was a formidable woman and one wrong word would cost them.

  19. That grin was all Evaida needed, to know that this was not going to be one ordinary straight forward trip into Tar Valon. Why was it that she always got mixed up with trainees like this, they were nothing but trouble. It did not surprise her in the least that Maldrin was already in trouble, shirking duties was not exactly a rare occurrence in the warders yards. Such behaviour from Novices or Accepted would only end in a visit to the Mistress of Novices leaving you unable to sit for a week at best.

Maldrin seemed nice enough but with the luck Evie had been having lately with trainees perhaps she should consider the Red Ajah… dismissing that thought as soon as it came she focused on the quickest route to the bank. The faster they got these things done the less chance there was of landing themselves in hot water.

"Ah, this should be easy. The only snag in it I see is Jornahn's shop. I've been banned from there for reasons as unlikely and ridiculous as an Aiel with a sword. You'll have to go in there alone. And we should get the brandy last. I know a great place."

Evie raised an eyebrow at the last comment, no this defiantly was not going to be straight forward. Scanning the list again she considered whether they would need a pack horse, looking at Maldrin again she smiled to herself No need for a pack horse when you have a trainee at your beck and call.

"How about a couple drinks when we're finished? Estel Liones' treat."

Almost stumbling over her own feet, it took a split second for Evaida to regain her composure, this young man really had a death wish. If they were caught using Aes Sedai money to buy a pint in a tavern not being able to sit down for a week would be the least of their worries. Then again, with her new found bargaining skills Evie was confident she could get a more than decent price for most of the items on the list, Estel Sedai would not even know if they did…borrow some coin for a refreshment or two. “How about we focus on the items on the list first†she said as they turned down the main street with the Golden Pearl only a few doors away. Dismissing the boy’s ridiculous idea outright would only have him pestering her for the rest of the afternoon and even hinting that she considered the idea was out of the question.

Starting up the stairs to the entrance of the bank, Evaida looked at Maldrin sideways “Perhaps I should do the talking†if he could get into trouble in a Seamstress shop – the light only knows how he managed that – there was no telling what might happen should he say the wrong thing to a banker. Negotiations were coming more naturally to Evie now with her sights set on the Gray Ajah and the great serpent ring circling her left middle finger helped a little too.

  20. It was one of those days where everything starts off so well but with every waking hour things just seemed to get worse and worse. As most days did for Evaida, today had started early in the stables. Grooming her stallion Akai was the one thing that took her mind away from the stresses of study and classes, even if she did not have the time to ride just being around the horse was relaxing. It was when she entered the dining room for breakfast that things started to go down hill. She was running late which was nothing unusual and by the time she sat down to eat Evie only had minutes to scoff down the lukewarm porridge if she was to make it in time to meet her roommate for 100 weave practice.

Sitting in a hard wooden seat with sweat dripping down her face Evaida begun the 57th weave for the third time. Normally she could make it to 80th or 90th weave before she really begun to struggle but today she could not make it to 60 without dropping a thread and having to start back at number one. The backs of her legs were stinging from what seemed like a thousand invisible switches and her ears were still ringing from the loud bang that sounded like something exploded inside her head. Evie was so close to completing the weave with one last thread of earth to add, but the thread just seemed to slip away causing the weave to collapse.

Evaida blinked her eyes a couple of times only to realise she was actually starring at the ceiling, it wasn't just her imagination. "I've had enough, I'm going for a walk" she picked herself up off the floor and went outside closing the door not so gently behind her. Perhaps the gardens could help her regain her concentration.

It was well past mid-day when Evie found herself approaching the warders yards, a place she had been avoiding since her last awkward encounter with Leawen. That trainee seemed to bring her nothing but trouble and she was not about to jeopardise her studies for a young man with little respect for boundaries and no manners. Pausing only a second to glance in the yards Evaida walked briskly in the opposite direction. She was almost around the next corner when a sharp "Accepted!" brought her to a halt.

Oh this was just what she needed, an Aes Sedai in a bad mood. It was not hard to tell that Estel Sedai should have perhaps gotten up on the other side of the bed this morning, the temperature seemed to drop the moment her voice rang across the yards. Evaida hurried over and curtsied, she did not even get a word out before the Blue began her instructions."I need some errands run in the city! You boy, are to accompany her." handing Evie a list. Reading the list she could have groaned, it was going to take the rest of the day to get all of this done and having a trainee tagging along was only going to make it slower.

"Now run, both of you. I want everything on this list before sundown!"

“Yes Aed Sedai, right away†Evaida bobbed a quick curtsey and scurried in the direction of the town. Looking over her shoulder she saw the trainee a few paces behind her “Well come on we don’t have all dayâ€, slowing just a little to allow him to catch up.

“I’m Evaida†she gave a brief smile “and we are going to be in big trouble if we don’t get all this by sundownâ€

  21. Never in her life did Evaida imagine such a test would be so difficult, it was not a test of skill or knowledge but a test of the heart. Facing your fears would never be easy but having faced the first two arches only made it all the more difficult to face the last. What was her greatest fear? Evie tried to think of what it may be but her nerves kept focus just out of her reach.

Faerzyne guided Evaida to the last arch "The third time is for what will be. Be steadfast for the way back will come but once."

Standing there in front of the third arch Evie considered refusing, at least she would only be put out of the Tower, going in to the arch on the other hand was walking into the unknown there was no telling what would happen or if she would return. Taking one last look at the room she remembered all the women that stood there, the women she admired had all been through this. If this is what she had to go through to become an Aes Sedai then so be it.

Passing through the arch she stepped into darkness. It took awhile for her eyes to adjust and take in her surroundings. Something nudged Evaida in the back causing her to jump. She turned to find her horse shifting impatiently “Always seeking attention aren’t you boy†Evaida whispered scratching the stallion on the forehead.

“Evaida Sedai, I do not like this we are too close to the Blight. It is tactically unsound and smells like a trap†a deep voice came from her left, the wave of unease hit her unexpectedly as she was not the source.

“We will not back away from negotiations†another voice came from Evie’s right, she could only make out the Gray fringe of the young Gray a few feet away from her.

“What hope is there for these people, they bicker among themselves like children and they will not listen to reasonâ€

“As long as they are willing to talk there is always hope†Evaida reassured her warder but it took an effort to keep her own unease from rising. She did not like the situation, it was tempting to weave a ball of light at least to shed some light on the situation but she did not want to bring suspicion to the negotiation before it even started. Saidar shone just on the edge of her reach, that at least was a comfort as long as the brilliance of Saidar was there she was safe.

The sharp crack of a twig breaking caused all their heads to turn towards the tree line in front of them.

    “Trollocs†her warder growled

“No, I don’t think it is†Evaida squinted trying to see through the darkness

    “I think we should leaveâ€

“Wait†the negotiations may be fruitless but she had to try

    “Evaida get on your horseâ€

“Do not speak to me like that-“ the whistle of something flying inches from her head caused Evie to stop, urgency flooded through the bond. Swinging into the saddle she set her horse at a gallop. Embracing Saidar she began frantically weaving a shield, the weave was about to snap into place when she suddenly her horse disappeared from under her.

Evaida hit the ground with a thud, knocking the wind out her lungs. Scrambling to her feet she staggered over to the large dark shape laying lifeless on the ground. Blood seeped from the arrow lodged in her horse’s chest. “No†she sobbed, without thinking she began a healing weave

“Evaida, it’s no use†her fellow Gray appeared beside her “We must goâ€

Her hand were covered in blood and Evaida drew on as much Saidar as she could handle but she knew it would not work she just was not strong enough. A glint of silvery light appeared at the edge of her vision, the arch stood masterfully next to her. All it would take was one small step but she could not let go, this was all her fault. If they had of left a few seconds earlier, had she been that little bit quicker to weave that shield the animal would still be alive. The horse that had saved her life on so many occasions was going to die because of her, Evaida failed.

The sounds of approaching danger were getting closer. There was no telling how many of them there were and time was running out, if only she could get this weave right. One small step. She was so close but she had to let go. Finally she took that step, plunging out of the darkness into the light of that familiar chamber. She never knew one small step could carry so much weight. She failed… and her failure ended in death. Tears flowed freely and Evaida promised herself she would never fail again.

It took awhile for her to realize more Aes Sedai had entered the chamber. In a way one failure led to another success, she passed the test, she had earned the ring. Kneeling before the Amyrlin Seat in the seven stripped stole and the representatives from each ajah in the colour fringed shawls, Evie took comfort in their presence.

The Amyrlin Seat poured the final chalice of cold water over Evaida’s head saying "You are washed clean of Evaida al’Marnae of Tear. You are washed clean of all ties that bind you to the world. You come to us washed clean in heart and soul. You are Evaida al’Marnae, Accepted of the White Tower. You are sealed to us, now. Welcome, daughter," with that the Amyrlin Seat slipped a Great Serpent ring on to Evie’s third finger on her left hand and helped her to her feet. "Welcome, Daughter", she says kissing Evaida’s cheeks "Welcome."

It was over, finally, she had faced her fears, fears of loss, of hurt, of pain and for that she was a better person. She had a renewed strength, this was only the beginning.

  22. Never in her life did Evaida imagine such a test would be so difficult, it was not a test of skill or knowledge but a test of the heart. 23. Standing Evaida made her way to the next arch, the three sisters sitting on the floor were still focused on the ter’angreal.

“The second arch is for what is. The way will come but once. Be steadfast.†Faerzyne Sedai intoned

Taking those few steps into the Arch was harder than she thought it would be especially now that she been though one. Stepping out onto a closely kept lawn Evaida took in her surroundings, it was a garden with the White Tower as a backdrop. However she could not remember how she had gotten there. Shrugging it off walking towards the Tower, perhaps today she might go for a walk in Tar Valon.

The banded skirts of the Accepted dress she wore swished as she wandered down the street. The buildings in the city were beautiful, each a work of art sculpted by Ogiers, Evaida never grew tired of looking at those buildings. Turning down another street she missed a step when she heard a familiar voice. Drawing closer to it’s source there was no mistaking it, the voice was that of an older woman talking to a shop keeper. She stood dazed staring at her mother, no wonder that voice sounded familiar. She must have sensed Evie looking at her because she turned and looked straight at her “Evaida?†the hint of question slowly disappeared “What are you doing here? I thought you would be in Andor or Cairhien that is where you said you were going when you left all those years ago†Evaida stood stunned as her mother embraced her.

“What are you doing here?†Evie asked slowly, this was the last place she thought she would find her mother, a Tairen to the bone avoiding anything to do with the One Power and Aes Sedai.

“I was on my way to look for you. You have been gone so long and you never hinted at returning in your letters†the older woman released Evie and took in her dress and her serpent ring causing her eyes to widen “What is this? Why are you wearing that dress and that ring? I do not know what you are playing at girl but it is a very dangerous game.â€

“I am not playing at anything mother, I am an Accepted of the White Tower†she said matter-of-factly “I am going to be Aes Sedaiâ€

“Evaida al’Marnae, you will change out of that dress immediately and come home with me. You can get into a lot of trouble pretending to be something that you are not and I refuse to believe you would disappear for all these years and never mention in your letters that you are studying at the White Tower†Lindah al’Marnae took her daughters wrist and began dragging her in the direction of an inn.

Evie snatched her wrist back “No I will not. I am Accepted and I am staying hereâ€

“Would you turn your back on your family and your heritage to follow a foolish dream?â€

“It is not foolish nor is it a dream, it is very real mother†she crossed her arms stubbornly “Nor am I a little girl to be directed by her mother, I am quite capable of making my own decisionsâ€

Her mothers face softened “Of course you are but it is not too late to turn back, come home, come back to your family†her voice was pleading and Evie’s heart was breaking. Just then a silvery arch appeared only a few feet away, it was almost like it was drawing her.

“I can not go with you mother, I have made my decision†Evaida began walking towards the arch her mother pleading with her every step of the way begging her to turn back. Evie could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, she never wanted it to be like this. She had known it would be difficult to tell her family but this was beyond difficult, walking away from her old life, her family, her friends, what use to be her entire world. She refused to look back, scared that she would change her mind, deep down she knew that she had to go through that arch and if she looked back she did not think she could go through with it. The final step carried her out of the street and into the familiar domed chamber.

Tears rolled down Evaida’s cheeks as the blue sister poured the second chalice of water over her head “You are washed clean of false pride. You are washed clean of false ambition. You come to us washed clean, in heart and soul.â€

She would write that letter she had never been able to before, as soon as she got back to her room. The words would be difficult and almost ten years since she had left Tear would make it no easier but she had to do it. No matter how hard it was it would be better than going through what she just had.

  24. Standing Evaida made her way to the next arch, the three sisters sitting on the floor were still focused on the ter’angreal.

The words would be difficult and almost ten years since she had left Tear would make it no easier but she had to do it. No matter how hard it was it would be better than going through what she just had.

  25. The little room in the novice quarters was becoming dim with the fading light of dusk. The small nub of a candle did not give off much light but it was just enough for Evaida to make out the words on the parchment. The letters that came out of Tear from her family were rare yet more numerous than her replies, she could not count the number of times over the years she tried to tell them that she was studying to be Aes Sedai in the White Tower but the words never made it on to the paper. Just the same vague replies time after time that she was safe, well and working hard. The tiny flame of the candle stirred as the door to Evie’s room opened revealing Faerzyne Sedai in her gray fringed shawl, the Mistress of Novice’s calm face revealed nothing but Evaida knew why she was there. She had been waiting for this for days and it had been tiresome at best, you knew it was coming but never the day nor the hour in which you would be summoned.

Faerzyne led Evie through the Tower, weaving through the hallways, down spiraling ramps and staircases moving to the depths of the Tower. With every step nearer to their destination Evaida’s heart beat faster and butterflies were creating a whirlwind in her stomach. Just when she thought the journey would last forever they stopped abruptly, entering into a large domed chamber. The chamber was far from empty, there were four sisters in their shawls fringed in the colour of their Ajahs. Three of the Aes Sedai sat on the floor, the focus of their attention three silvery arches with their ends touching, placed on a thick silver ring. The fourth sister stood at a table holding three water filled silver chalices.

Faerzyne Sedai began in a formal rehearsed tone "There are two things that no woman hears until she enters this room. Once you begin, you must continue to the end. Refuse to go on, no matter your potential and you will be very kindly put out of the Tower with enough silver to support you a year, and you will never be allowed back. Second. To seek, to strive, is to know danger. You will know danger here. Some women have entered, and never come out. When the ter'angreal was allowed to grow quiet, they - were - not - there. And they were never seen again. If you will survive, you must be steadfast. Faltering leads to a failure."

Evaida could feel her eyes growing wider, her gaze flicking to the arches that held a darkness that would not reveal what lay inside. The hours spent waiting for this were no preparation for what lay ahead.

"This is your last chance, child. You may turn back now, and you will have only mark against you. Twice more will you be allowed to come here, and only at the third refusal will you be put out of the Tower. It is no shame to refuse. Many cannot do it their first time here. Now you may speak."

Oh Light she did not want to go in there, but she knew if she did not face it now she would probably never be able to face it. Evie was determined to become Aes Sedai and baulking at the test to be raised to Accepted was not an option, the only thing to do was to go forward. “I am ready†it did not matter how many times she had been taught this ceremony those three words were the hardest she had ever had to say.

The sister at the table slightly plump in her blue fringed shawl intoned “Whom do you bring with you, Sister?â€

“One who comes as a candidate for Acceptance, Sister.†Faerzyne Sedai replied

    “Is she ready?â€

“She is ready to leave behind what she was, and, passing through her fears, gain Acceptance.â€

    “Does she know her fears?â€

“She has never faced them, but now is willing.â€

“Then let her face what she fears.â€

Evaida let the words roll over her, all she could think about was what was about to happen. Before she knew it she was in just her skin standing in front of the first arch, what lay beyond that soft white glow nobody knew.

“The first time is for what was. The way back will come but once. Be steadfast.†Faerzyne Sedai gave Evie one last reassuring glance and then she was alone taking the last few steps into the unknown.

Stepping through the heavily carved doorway, Evie found herself in a large bedchamber. She stood stunned for a moment, it was almost like she was not meant to be there even though she was, at least she thought she was.

“Lady Evaida†a middle aged woman dropped a curtsy presenting a silver cup of spiced wine. Strangely Evaida could not remember her maid’s name, the whole situation felt… odd. Waving away the maid Evie walked over to the large stand mirror in the corner admiring her fine blue silk riding dress with silver embroidered Tairen mazes working the hem, cuffs and neck. She absently fingered the single emerald that hung from a silver necklace, it felt like she was forgetting something.

The double doors to the anteroom swung open, admitting the tall handsome Lord Morikan “Evaida my lovely wife†he strode across the room to where she stood in front of the mirror “I thought you were going to try on that new dress I had made for you†his sharp eyes taking in her riding dress seemed none to pleased.

Wife? “I’m taking Akai out, he is getting restless in the stables†her mind was racing, how could she forget marrying Morikan? But no matter how hard she tried she could not remember.

“If I did not know better I would say you love that horse more than you love me†he stood behind her, both their images reflecting in the mirror, and brushed her hair aside. “Where are you going on your ride? Not far I hopeâ€

Evie managed a weak smile “Not far†this was not right, that nagging feeling just would not go away.

“Not like that time I found you halfway between Caemlyn and Tar Valon. At least you got that foolish idea of going to the White Tower out of your headâ€

Tar Valon… White Tower… there was something in those names that seemed vaguely… familiar. “Of course not, I am just going riding in the woods, I am no longer on my mother’s apron strings and I do not need you looking over my shoulder†Evie tried to keep the bite out of her voice. She remained standing at the mirror as Morikan walked over to a small gilded table holding a pitcher of wine and two silver cups.

“Oh Evie do you take me for a fool†he laughed as he poured the wine into the cups “From the day I met you I knew you were… spirited. I wonder what you parents would think if they knew where you really were those nights you snuck out†he said absently as he handed her a cup full of wine. Evaida stood frozen to the spot, those nights were one thing she could not forget no matter how hard she tried I did want I had to do to survive she thought to herself, but no matter how many times she told herself that it did not make her feel any better.

“I know what you are planning†he leaned back casually in a large armchair watching her but his tone suggested nothing casual

“I have no idea what you are talking about†Evie took a sip of the wine and turned to face him

“You really must think I am a fool. Let me tell you this, if you leave me your family will be out in the cold, better yet in prison, an accusation of stealing should suffice. You will not get half way to Illian even if you tryâ€

“I still do not know what you are talking about†Evie’s grip on her cup had grown so tight that her hand began to ache

“You are planning to leave me, run away and hide in Illian. Do not look so surprised some servants in the manor are still loyal to me†his voice began to escalate as he slammed his now empty cup back down on the table “I have given you everything you have ever wanted and more and this is how you repay me?!â€

“I will not talk to you while you are like this, I am going riding†Evie turned and started for the door

“Do not bother I have already had Akai unsaddledâ€

She could feel her face growing darker “You can not keep here like a prisoner†her hand was shaking and the wine threatened to spill over the edge of the cup “If you try you will find yourself alone in the morning, besides you would not dare, you need meâ€

“You need me as much as I need you. Without me, you and your family would be beggars on the street, is that what you want?â€

Evie met his stare silently, it was not what she wanted but neither was this. The way will come but once. Be steadfast., the words echoed in her head but she could not remember where she had heard them.

“Now, Lord Tarlus has invited us to a banquet tonight and I want you to wear that new dressâ€

Evaida was about to open her mouth to protest, the dress was cut entirely to low it would make any Domani proud, but Morikan cut her off with a dismissive wave “Do not pout, Tarlus is planning something to gain favor with the High Lords and I want you to find out what it is. He always was fond of you and incredibly jealous when we wed. Only a little persuasion should be needâ€

The sick feeling in her stomach rose but something in the corner of her eye caught her attention. She turned to where the anteroom doors were, except now in place of them was a large silvery arch. Curiously she stepped towards it, she knew she had to go through it. Morikan was on his feet

“Evie where are you going? Look at me!†he took a few steps towards her but she kept walking “Evaida if you walk out those doors you will regret it. Think about your family, what will happen to themâ€

It was enough to make her pause but Evie knew she had to go through that arch, it was only a few more steps away. “Evaida†Morikan growled “Evaida come back hereâ€

Those few steps seemed to take forever, she could still hear him behind her, demanding she come back “You will never escape from me†his last words followed her as she stepped out into the domed chamber.

The blue sister that had been standing at the table now stood in front of Evie, her heart felt like it was in her throat and the sick feeling remained in her stomach. The Aes Sedai poured cold water from one of the silver chalices over Evaida’s head and said "You are washed clean of what sin you may have done and of those done against you. You are washed clean of what crime you may have committed, and of those committed against you. You come to us washed clean and pure, in heart and soul."

Oh light she wished that water could wash away her memories, but it could not. She did feel better though, perhaps now she could let go of her past.
