  1. Wanderlust...it was decent, about what you would expect.

I'm looking forward to The Hunger Games too. Unfortunately, the friends I want to see it with are leaving for India for two weeks the friday it opens.

    You read the books?

i did. A friend's wife tried convincing me to give them a try for about six months but i was very skeptical. i finally said ok in late december and was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah they are YA ..I think but I liked the books too. Haven´t read the last one though, but Im going too. I just hope they don´t make the movie too kidfriendly

  2. Watched "Devil Inside" a couple of days ago. Was an okay horror flick until the gd end... wow. If I knew that I wouldn´t have wasted... 7 bucks lol.

I do look forward to the Hunger Games though, it´s gonna be epic (two more weeks and then it shows in Sweden =))

  3. Her image has been ruined. It's not the spanking, it's the loss of face. Semirhage values her image, her awesomeness above all.

Now everyone there would see her as human, as a misbehaving child. Everyone. And the tales they will carry.

I´m reading tGS and Semirhage is captured. Cad and CO are forbidden to torture her (Rand Sedai´s order) so Cadsuane ponders how she is gonna break her and realizes that she is abit like Semi and she needs to figure out how to break herself. She ponders and ponders and tada... if she spanks Semi she will break. I know the spanking is not the actual point but that it´s humiliating.

My prob with this is... I don´t buy that Semi would think that is so humiliating. Are there any hints in her character that she would break under such circumstances (getting spanked?) For example... I do understand that Aiel would find it extremly shaming/humiliating to sort pebbles cause their society is based on usefulness/being warrioirs and so on). So if Semi was Aiel she would get such a task. I do understand that if the Aiel wanted to humiliate a wetlander I´m sure there would be lots if: "Go attend the sweattents" or "jump around naked" cause that would humiliate the wetlander. Those examples fit with the world/chars Jordan has created.

Can someone explain how Semi, one that was so feared her own jailors smuggled her out, someone that has tortured many people simply cause it´s fun... breaks from some quick smacks on the botton =/

Well, she was a very powerful couple of hundreds years old person in the AoL, when spanking and public humiliation were a big no no, and they were the only one that did it after they were Forsaken.

Now, they have almost godlike status with the shadowspawn and DF, and are feared by the rest.

Even as a captive, everybody was afraid of her. To lose that status and be treated as a ten year old, and spanked and reduced to tears in front of servants, was a huge shock to her.

She took a position of power even as her undercover facade. As the Voice/Speaker of the Royal bloodline of Seachan, he could treat the most powerful person in the world like trash and get away with it.

But I think what really got to her was the fact that a DF/Forsaken could actually find out about that treatment, and that would be the end for her. She would became a joke for the Forsaken. Being spanked by a 'so called AS', in front of servants.

Not even Shaidar Haran will stoop that low to look at her, not to mention rape her. Well, that will be only good thing that could come out of that.

Question: What if Cadsuade captures Shaidar Haran and uses the same tactics on him? And he escapes. What will he do to her before feeding her to his Trollocs?

Hmm... when you put it like that I guess I can understand why Cadsuane choose that as a method. If one has high thoughts about oneself then being spanked by so-called AS that you regard as children would be, humiliating, especially if that fact find it´s way to other Forsaken or DF´s ears. Thanks to both of you!

  5. How do you mean? Weren't all the apes CGI?

Yes, but thats not what I meant.

Examine the story a little and it almost reaked of some kind of P.E.T.A involvement.

    How do I put it...

70s/80s the original the apes were obviously about race relations. This one feels more like its about 'animal rights'. Something the original didn't have that 'feel' to it. :P

I saw it yesterday and I didn´t get the PETA-feeling at all. I think it poses some really interesting questions. Setting aside the normal apes, is it right to keep an animal caged when it´s obviously more intelligent then a human and has self-awareness?

I don´t know if chimpanzees (spelling?) have a sense of self-awareness but I think so, cause if I remember correctly they can recognize themselves in the mirror, and they recognize if you have altered their fur or put some weird clothes on them.

I think it was a good movie, but the first one was better...

  6. it's an act so dark that only those in the service of the Dark perform/condone it. That could've been a reasonable explaination except that none of the male/male Forsaken has had that kind of punishment, not even hinted at by what I recall.

Yeah, I don't think that's it. We have instances where rape or rapers are mentioned with no apparent connection to DFs:

Beside the wide arched gate into the city, a long platform displayed, on spikes twenty feet above the ground, the tarred but still recognizable heads of over a dozen men and two women who had fallen afoul of Seanchan justice. Above them hung the symbol for that justice, a headsman's slant-edged axe with the haft wrapped in an intricately knotted white cord. A placard below each head announced the crime that had placed it there, murder or rape, robbery with violence, assault on one of the Blood.

Quite aside from all the sunken ships and dead, freeing damane was another death penalty charge, and disgusting besides, in the Seanchan view, as bad as rape or molesting children.

Seems not. And tbh I find the point odd that in a female dominated society there would be no rape/rape attempts. I don´t think that was RJ´s point.

  7. Im rereading KoD and at the same time reading Leighs Wheel of time Rereads. Anyways, I was reading the part where Faile finds the oathrod and Rolan is there and says he wants to take her with him when he goes back to the Three-Fold Land, and Leigh talks about rape in our world vs Randland. One of the comments to that post was among other things this:

"I don't think its fair to say that rape doesn't exist in the WoT world. Rather, it's just not something focused on as there are bigger, more pressing matters at hand for the characters who get the most screen time.

Going by the 'rape isn't sex it's power, control, and humiliation definition used in the above recap there are many instances of rape or attempted rape in Randland:

    EVERY damane ever, including Egwene"

Is he/she talking about actual rape or the mental process of violating/breaking someone?

Very strange comment. Was someone in those comments trying to argue that rape did not exist in Randland?

Mark Grayson; Yeah I was thinking along the same lines. Cause I know how the Seanchan would feel about damane.

Majsju: I really don´t know. I know someone argued that in a world where women had the power and the Power rape would be a uncommon thing and maybe Jordan saw it like that also. By the comment below s/he seems to say that there is not alot of physical rape going on, but alot of mental one; the damane being forced to obey, maybe Tylin/Mat, Valda and Morgase, numerous forceful spankings and so on.

Leigh also saw the rape that the Myrddraal perform as "in character" for them, that it´s an act so dark that only those in the service of the Dark perform/condone it. That could´ve been a reasonable explaination except that none of the male/male Forsaken has had that kind of punishment, not even hinted at by what I recall.

  9. We know for a fact Halima was blocking Egwene's prophetic dreaming--she states as much in KoD 3; At the Gardens.

Thanks Luckers and everyone else. I´m about to begin on KoD soon and then just one more book and I can sink my teehth in ToM. I always thought that there was more to Halima´s headaches then just to give Egwene a headache or some kind of subtle Compulsion. And to block some dreams could harm the Light. I´m reluctant to think that she was Compulsed, but who knows.

  10. Having both words seems rather clunky. Maybe Valonian or Valonese?

Regardless, I believe you're right in that we never actually hear a name for citizens of Tar Valon.

P.S. Did anyone else immediately think of a catchy little rhyme as an answer to GYLD's post?

    Ehmm... no?

I have a question about the headscarfs the Wise One´s wear. How are they attached? They are always described as a piece of cloth folded over the forhead, yes, but how does it stay on there? Do they tie it in the back?

  11. Thanks Finnnssss and Sid. So nice of you to explain =)

The last two questions was as I suspected but the Ajah Head one wasn´t. So basically the Ajah Heads wanted to control the younger Sitters in the Tower but the too young Sitters refused? So therefor their plan to reunite the Hall will fail? (I haven´t read ToM yet just so you know)

No ToM required actually. Pick up your copy of tGS and re-read Jesse's PoV in chaptr 43. Should help clear things up for ya

=) It did clear up alot. Thanks.

Oh btw... do you use some kinda search to find that PoV or do you just have an awesome memory?

Usually memory to recall which book and roughly where it was, then http://www.encyclopaedia-wot.org/ to find it exactly.

Alas I fear I will fail then... My memory sucks... Thanks anyway!

  12. Thanks Finnnssss and Sid. So nice of you to explain =)

  13. *Logain´s Pet rips out her hair* This is a You know you spent too much time on WoT thread... discussions about I want to kiss Egwene´s feet/I want to thrust a blade in Egwene can be taken there.

You know you've spent too much time on WoT when you tug your hair in times of frustration, especially if it's a braid.

No braid this time, but that´s easily fixed.

You know you spent too much time on WoT:

    - when you have awesome dreams about Logain and Rand showing up at work to get their most powerful Aes Sedai back to Randland to save the day... aka me lol.

    - When you look at certain clothes and think: "Hmm this would fit as an Asha´man coat.

    - When you look at certain people and go: "Aha, there goes Mazrim Taim."

    - When you explain certain plotpoints happenings to your loved ones, who doesn´t wanna listen. You make them listen!

    - When you have more awesome dreams about battles and more Wheel of Time related stuffs.

    - When you get angry if someone says bad things about WoT

  14. I have a question about the darn Sitters in the Hall in the White Tower. Yukiri discovers that the Sitters that were replaced when the Righteous Rebels fled were much younger then average, some only having the shawl for a couple of decades. The Heads were also meeting in secret. Why is this so earth-shattering and what are they trying to achieve?

Also a question about that army in Murandy? Is that Egwene´s army being seen as they Travel closer to the Tower or is it Roedran´s forces gathering?

And what is Ituraldes uberplan? To smash the Seanchan in a trap when they follow him into Arad Doman?

  15. So? She is the one who works most to save the world. Except maybe Rand Sedai.

If by "the world," you mean "the Tower." Moiraine, Verin, Nynaeve, and a bunch of others have done much more to save the world than Egwene.

  16. Just finished Brave New World. Finally getting around to reading Brandon Sanderson's Elantris now.

Keep meaning to read Elantris as well. The story sounds really interesting. Let us know what you think.

Great book unless you're only after action scenes. I loved it even though 2 of the 3 main characters are waaay too perfect, witty, smart... you get the point.

I just finished Elantris-this is an incredible debut novel! MierinWru, I hear you on 1 of the 3 main characters perhaps being perfect, but Sarene and Hrathen are fully fleshed out characters. I think of this novel as a mix of fantasy/mystery for most of the book, but enough action to pull you in. I totally recommend it. I've posted a full review on my blog on here: http://www.dragonmount.com/forums/blog/26/entry-1223-review-of-elantris-by-brandon-sanderson/

And now that I've finished Elantris, I'm re-reading Game of Thrones before I start watching the HBO series.

Cool. Just ordered it last week from America so should have it by August. The joys of living in Ireland.

I thought Elantris was ok... kinda slow and frankly boring sometimes. It was a "I have to finish this"-feeling, but there was some plotpoints that kept it interesting.

Right now I´m rereading Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter (<3) just started my reread on CoT and Im also on book one in the Darkest Jewels Trilogy (really good and angsty reading!)
