  1. and reading The Darkness that Comes Before by Bakker although Bakker's book is a bit tedious in reading. A bit boring at the moment, about 70 pages into it.

Stick with it, trust me...Bakker IMO is the most talented fantasy writer out right now.

I typically give books a 100 page limit. Is that fair in this case? I do like action in my fantasy books.

  2. Just finished Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Reading the Fire by same author and reading The Darkness that Comes Before by Bakker although Bakker's book is a bit tedious in reading. A bit boring at the moment, about 70 pages into it.

  3. Also Falme (far west) cannot be reached easily and quickly from Carhein (just east of the Wall) except via the Ways or Travel, which neither Mordeth nor Fain know about the existence of.

So it cuts down the odds of his being followed except by Rand's relatively small party.

Actually, Fain has traveled the Ways and Fain is so twisted that the Black Wind FLED from Fain because of how twisted and evil Fain is.

  4. What if the very fact of an absence of power/force on cuendillar results in it's slow and inevitable disintigration? A sort of half-life rule, which gets reset whenever a force is applied to it.

I suppose this might account for Taim's apparent fear of Rand threatening to break the seal (ie, make it stronger).

That's not the case. The integrity of the Cuendillar seals has been compromised. Didn't Moiraine scratch off flecks with a knife. She couldn't do that if the seals weren't corrupted.

  5. However, I do agree it was not a good time for her petty political squabbles. Given that she IS the daughter of the previous queen, you'd think she'd be able to negotiate a "Queen Regent" type title with an agreement to hold a proper contest after TG. Would probably have to give some concessions, like some influential advisers from some strong houses, but it'd still have saved a lot of time.

Never would have happened. Morgase had her strongest supporters tortured by Rahvin's compulsion. Having been out of Andor for quite some time, she has not been the face of Andor. I doubt the any house would trust the daughter of Morgase enough to accept the role of influential underling just like that

  6. She is pregnant and cannot use the OP on a consistant basis. I'm sure Rahvin and Rand's battle are still fresh on people's mind and remember what the OP can do and may not be solidly behind Elayne if she used it instead of the traditional method.

As for Bashere and Rand, Andorans don't like formal alien armies. They hated the Aiel and Bashere. Bashere had to camp his men miles outside of the city. To me, it seems tradition is very important to Andorans and winning by gaining the support of the majority of the Houses is the key to maintaining that your house rules for a LONG time. She has to look to the future of her people after the Last Battle. Using foreign armies gives the impression that you are weak and you won't win the support of the people.

  7. And, this is just her actions through the first 3 books.

I'm not an Elayne hater, but to say she's not selfish completely ignores all events and facts to the contrary. The only time she's felt the slightest bit of remorse was when she didn't write a letter to her mother the first time she ran away, and also when forced to apologize to Mat by Avi. When she met Gawayn in ToM, she had no idea how much she ruined his life and made a hugely condescending remark about excusing him from his duties as Captain-General.

What if we judge Mat by the first 3 books?

Read Lord of Chaos and Path of Daggers again. Mat's offering of us medallion and her subsequent refusal as their aren't enough to go around to Avi and Nynaeve is one of the sweetest things you can read in these books. After having zero experience unweaving, she orders everyone else to leave so she can prevent the Seanchan from possibly reading her weaves and discovering Traveling. Is she selfish and petulant through part of the books? Yes, but who isn't, besides Bela of course.

  8. I think the thing that was most painful to me was the letter he wrote to Elayne. Are we really supposed to believe that a guy who knows the Old Tongue ("sifted whole out of those dreams") and has memories from hundreds (?) of brilliant people doesn't know how to spell?

I can believe it. I'm sure if he wanted to spell in the Old Tongue he wouldn't have a problem. He knows tactics. I know plenty of smart people that don't spell very well in the real world.

  9. Oh damn it.

How was I so oblivious :<

And Verin is also the reason why the sisters swore fealthy to Rand, right?

If you're talking about right after Dumai's Well, then no, that was a matter of an angry, slightly insane Rand/LTT scaring the crap out of everyone with Ta'veren assisting. If you're talking about afterwards when Verin had her "chat" with the other sisters, I would say yes.

  10. it might just be myself, but it seems to me that all the women, not just Aes Sedai, consider themselves somehow better and/or more inteligent than everyone else.

Give me a Far Dareis Mai for protection anytime over any other man besides Lan as far as non channeler proctection

  11. The Aes Sedai do that. Aiel don't do that. If you have gotten to Chapter 35 in the fires of heaven:

    Birgitte would never do that

Aes Sedai are used to getting their way so in some fashion, they are spoiled brats.
