Eurovision Song Contest Week (Monday 19th May 2008 --> Sunday 25th May 2008)

For those of us in Europe, we have a week of musical fun and comedy ahead of us. It is called:

The Eurovision Song Contest

Now into its 53rd year, Eurovision is bigger, better (this is debatable), and more contraversal than ever. But it somehow manages to gel Europe for a couple of hours during a week through music. The voting is always dodgy, the songs can be awful, there is the legacy of scoring a "nul point", but the competition still manages to survive. And this year, a record breaking 43 countries are taking part, with tiny San Marino taking part for the first time ever.

To sum Eurovision up, each country puts forth a song that they believe will win. This year, there are two semi-finals (Tuesday 20th May and Thursday 22nd May) before the grand final on Saturday 24th May. All countries vote, and this goes on to determine the qualifiers and then the eventual winner. The great issue is whether the voting is political or actually about the music. But whatever, it always causes discussion.

So, for this week, a series of threads will be run by the Band discussing Eurovision, as well as looking at the great flops, the great victories, the moments of contraversy, as well as the Marshal-General himself, Corki, give his view on each night of the competition. And I will also be doing my best to pick the winner, but my success isn't great. It has been 2 in the last 10 years. Maybe it will change this year...

Anyway, all are welcome. The first thread up will be a general discussion thread, and later on today, I will get a thread up about the "Top of the Flops".

Corki, you should have got The Band to write their own Eurovision horror - I mean song.  Just the words and set it against an established tune. That would have been entertaining. :D

But foisting the Eurovision on the World, tsk tsk Corki - the UN will be out to get you. ;D
