Welcome to this month's edition of the Hornsounder!

The Hornsounder is back once more, and boy has it been a busy month here in the Band.  Our EiC has bowed out  once more, but we're still going to deliver your news in grand fashion!

We are continuing to move forward with our process and there have been some changes in the Hornsounder with different pieces coming and going.  We have two fantastic articles making a comeback this month!  Paladin Manny, Footman, and Snin brought back a very lengthy article about the Org Game, and there's lots of juicy details that you might find interesting.  Check that article out for a breakdown of the current Bel Tine Festival.  Also making a comeback this month is the Caption the Picture Competition.  Lady Stef has brought this game storming back and I've got to tell you, that picture is going to make creating a caption a lot of fun!  If you like making funny comments about a picture, be sure to check that out!

Another month is in the bag and it's hard to believe that we are already a third of the way through 2008!  We've got plenty of stories again this month and we are hoping to bring you even more stories next month!

Grab yourself a drink, sit back with a snack and enjoy this month's edition of The Hornsounder.

Paladin Jon the Direwolf,

Senior Editor

JoTS Winner of the Month

This month's topic was: Brews of the Band.

And the winner: Lady Stefania of the Cavalry

Congratulations, Stef :)

The winning JoTS:

Why are shoes in my potted plants?

Can’t remember where things went wrong.

We hadn’t been at the Warhorse that long

We were singing a karaoke song

Brew was flowing with Jak O’the Shadows

Now could someone please hand me my pants?

Why are shoes in my potted plants?

And that vase that you broke was my aunt’s!

Morning after dancing with Jak O’the Shadows

Why Join the BotRH?

So, having read some of the activities the Band gets up to, you want to know more about the ORG? One of the ORG's focus is music, and the Band's other focus is travel. Banders are regularly writing reviews about any music album they own, whether it be old or new, as well as any gigs and concerts they have been to and various locations around the world they've visited. Responses to these reviews are encouraged, which gives Banders points, and these points allow for promotion through the many ranks in the Band. This is the basis of the ORG.

When you first join up with the Band of the Red Hand, you become a Raw Recruit. During this time, you experience life with each of the three Regiment (Archers, Cavalry, Infantry) and the Band itself as well so you get to know how the ORG works, and you don't get lost in your early days in the Band. After your three weeks of completing various tasks as a Recruit, you then pick the Regiment you wish to join and thus become a fully fledged member of the Band of the Red Hand. Also, once you picked your Regiment, you will be guided to become an Infantry Blademaster or a Knight of the Cavalry or an Assassin within the Archers.

However, the Band is not all about work. We have many fun activities going on within the ORG, ranging from simple word games to our ORG Game, created by Canis Rufus with the help of Mallett. Everything is based on the luck of rolling dice, so build up your stats to give yourself the chance of getting better rolls! Once you've taken the seven easy lessons, you can then challenge any Bander to a duel in the Arena and bring great glories to your name! Look out for Festivals of Games as another way to bring glory to your name! We are the only ORG to gamble as well, so create a Bank Account and join in the Lottery to earn some big winnings just like Mat!

As you can see, the Band is a place with a variety of activities, hopefully catering for everyone's needs. There are various activities for those who want points to go up the ranks, or fun and games for those who want to socialise. The Band is open to everyone, so come and join the fun at the best ORG at DM!

Gig Reveiws

(by Lady Stefania)

A couple Banders have been out and about this month. Kedomat enjoyed a concert by Linkin Park at the Ford Center in OKC, OK, USA. He had a good time despite the lead singer’s sickness. Our very own Elegost was the next to review, filling us in on a show by Muse at the Wembley Stadium. In his own words, this show “cemented Muse as one of (his) favorite bands”. Sounds like a great concert!

We want to hear all about the gigs you attend. Post a review in the Gig Reviw Section for a possible 2 ORG points or respond to a recent review for one!

Bander's Real Life Stories

(compiled by Paladin Jon the Direwolf)

Whoa!! Is it that time already?  Welcome to another exciting edition of Bander's Real Life!!  That craziness outside of the boards has certainly stepped in on many occasions, so let's say we take a look at some stories from our Band members.  This month we had three submissions, one from Sora Jea of the Archers, one from Climhazzard of the Infantry, and one from Snin of the Archers.  I guess that means it's time for me to quit yakking at you and present you with our stories.

College Interview Trip

(by Sora Jea)

Technically this should've gone in last month's, but I forgot to mention it to everyone here. A few may know what happened but just in case, I'll share!

So, way back in February, I went to Missouri Western State University for a college interview. My parents and I had a bit of a long discussion about my trip there. You see, this college is about an hour and a half away from where I live and so my parents were very concerned about me driving myself. After a while though, they decided it would be good for me to go by myself, and so I did! I got directions from Mapquest of course and got on the road armed with a good meal from Taco Bell and my water (I always have a bottle of water with me, so that was very necessary so, lol). It took me just under an hour and a half to arrive at the school. I had left nearly half an hour early so I was almost an hour early to my scheduled interview because the interviews were also running a little behind schedule.

Before my own interview I waited in this nice room with goodies (cookies and fruit and the like) and other interviewees. We listened to the Director of the Honors Program talk about one of the college's more interesting classes, called an outdoor semester where you spend some time traveling cross country by camping out and stuff like that. After a few minutes of that I was called out to be interviewed. The interview went great! I had already had one interview, for which I was very nervous, but this time the nerves weren't there which probably improved that interview a lot! The four professors that interviewed me were all very nice and I actually got them laughing a bit at a few things.

Well, after that, I went back to the waiting room, grabbed some grapes and a few pineapples along with a cookie that I never ate....and then I headed back out to my car to go home. This was the first time I really noticed how much snow was on the ground. The sidewalks and parking lots were all clear but on the grass was about a foot of snow. Now, where I live in Missouri, we never get that much snow! So for me, this was quite the sight!

The trip home started out a bit rough. I knew there was another way out of the city the college is in, but I didn't remember everything for sure, but I decided to try out the other way anyways. Bad idea! I ended up taking the WRONG highway and headed in the wrong direction for nearly half an hour before trying to turn around. The key word there is trying....the crossover I decided to use on this highway just so happened to be the only one I had seen so far that had a foot of snow in it...possibly more as the crossover went downhill. So, when I turned into the crossover, my car of course stopped and would not go. I tried...and eventually got out of my car to take a look.

Now keep in mind that I had dressed up a bit for my interview. So lets just say, heels and snow do NOT mix. I saw that my wheels were pretty much stuck so I got back in the car and kind of just sat there for a while, praying that help would come. About ten minutes later, a car pulls into the other side of the crossover and an older guy gets out and comes over and asks me if I'm stuck. I simply rolled my window down and told him I was while thinking, "Why else would I just be sitting here?"

It took a lot of work, and I'm pretty sure I hurt my engine a little bit (and possibly killed the muffler or something like that, because I need a new muffler now...), but eventually my car was free! The funniest part, looking back, was when my friend called. We didn't have school that day, because of the weather, and she called me to ask if I knew if the Courtwarming dance was still the next night. My response: "I have no idea, I'm stuck in snow, I don't know!" Her response: "Snow? What?" And my way of ending call: "Yeah...I'm in St. Joseph, or somewhere close, and I'm stuck in snow, I'll call you back when I get unstuck!"

So, the moral of the story, look before you leap, or in this case drive. Instead of it taking an hour and a half to get home, it took me a full three hours!!!!! Next time I'll know which highway to take. The best part of the whole thing though is that I got the scholarship!!!!!!!! So, on the 19th of this month (April) I will enroll in my classes and get another try at making it to the college and back without help. Yes, my mother will be coming with me, but I am banning her from helping me get there because I am determined to do it on my own again! Hopefully this time I won't get stuck in snow again...of course, I hope there won't be any snow there to get stuck in!

The Walking Wounded

(by Climhazzard)

Just to let all of you know, I will be having knee surgery in the next couple of weeks. I just found out that I tore the meniscus in my left knee and damaged the ligaments. Also my best friend is having back surgery on May 1. Unfortunately he is not a member here. So please keep us in your thoughts and prayers for the next few weeks. But the good news is, I'll be able to start posting more.  :P

Coming Face-to-Face with the Real World

(by Snin)

So it is hitting home here pretty hard that I am going to be out in the real world here in just a short time.  And time is winding down fast!!  I am currently 25, and have been in college at The Ohio State University for about 7 years.  It has been the best years of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for anything else.  I have made great friends that I can tell are going to be close for probably the rest of my life, and have had many memorable experiences.

I started here in the college of engineering when I was 18.  Ever since I was a kid, I was always interested in building things and how they went together and designing them.  So when I went to school I decided that I wanted to be a Civil Engineer.  After close to five years, I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in Construction Project Management.  By the time I had graduated, however, I realized that I didn’t want to work in the construction industry.

I did have an interest in a different specialization within Civil Engineering though.  That is Geotechnical Engineering, which deals with anything soil and earth related.  I had worked a little bit on a research project with a good friend of mine while I was an undergrad, and when he graduated, I was able to take over his position.  It has been great working on the project, which is using trees as a means of slope erosion protection.

Anyway, I have been done with classes for quite sometime, and am coming to a close with my thesis and field work.  Then it is out into the real world where I will be slapped in the face with working full time and having much greater responsibilities.  My life right now has gotten quite hectic with writing when I have free time, going out on field visits, and trying to find a job so I am not without one when I graduate.  So far I have had one company that I have interviewed at and another one that has contacted me about a possible interview.  I am looking forward to graduating and going out into the real world, but at the same time, it can be kind of overwhelming to think of the extreme lifestyle change that comes with that.

The Org Game Update

(by Sir Manriva, Footy, and Snin)

game1.gif

GameCenterLogo2.png

STARTS RIGHT NOW!

Manny: Hey knothea... um Sportsfans .. we got a Game Center tonight you're not gonna want to miss. Well maybe you would if some cute young thing was to come over with a bottle of wine and some Cool Ranch Doritos...... So... guys.. With the Wimmin's busy, guess it's just you couch taters' n'us for this edition, which will feature a report from Snin of the Archers from The Bel Tine Festival Center. Snin's gonna have us updated results from Current Games and Player Upgrades... YO.. Snin! Ya' with us there bucko?

(Camera cuts to Snin who is in the middle of chugging a brew, the papers he holds blow out of his hand, and Snin scrambles to retrieve them.  Camera quick cuts to Manny, who is shaking his head and muttering to himself. Camera pans back over to Snin who is finally getting himself together)

Snin: So…ahhh…right….the Bel Tine Festival. Its been an exciting month with fierce competition put up by all of the regiments, including some of the senior staff. Sixteen brave Banders entered the games, with the top four seeds going to Footman, Taymist, Manriva, and Direwolf Jon. It appears that the Cavalry and Infantry are going to be the favorites in most of the events....

Okay, here we go....there were six events that took place during the festival. Two events from each regimental battle style were played out and the finals in all of them are quickly coming to a close. (shuffle through papers for close to a minute…the camera man is starting to show impatience…making rude noises) ... Ah, found it. Infantry based games included the Sword fight and Caber Toss. The sword fights had some great competition, but as predicted, the top four seeds went to the semi-finals with Footman and Taymist going to the finals, Manny and DJ battling for the bronze. Over at the Caber Toss, twelve contestants tried to flip their way to the top and win the gold. The finals, still underway, are being battled out by Kastchei, Manriva, Taymist and Samuraiflip. All three regiments being represented and a Senior Staffer... Well done! And it seems female spectators are especially enamored of the kilt wearing competitors.... Who knew?

Hmm, Cavalry based games consisted of the Joust and the Horse Race. The jousts have seen great matches, with the finals being fought out between Footman and Manriva for the top two spots, followed by DJ and me.. Snin, and we're battling it out for the bronze. I would like to give a shout out to me.. Snin, on my advancement to the semi-finals and finals by disqualification. My extreme lack of ability is an inspiration to us all. (looks around at all of the half sneers) What?? Ok, moving on to the Horse Race. We've seen some…errr... interesting… competition out there as Banders tried to show off their abilities at racing these mangy beasts. Advancing to the finals were Jeannaisais, Uasal Arach, Direwolf Jon, and Kastchei. The final heat has been run, and it appears that Kastchei just barely necked out a win in front of Jeannaisais. Great job, Kastchei. It looks like the Cavalry need to brush up on their skills riding their horses.

And now, finally on to my expertise, the Archery based events, which included the Biathlon and the Turkey Shoot. Oh, and by expertise, I mean that I think I know what a bow looks like and that it is supposed to shoot something…..I think an arrow….or something like that. Anyway, the Biathlon is a grueling test of endurance and marksmanship. One must dash between shooting stations quickly while still being steady as a rock when it counts. The competition was intense, with Footman, Direwolf Jon, Manriva and Uasal making it to the finals. So far it's looking competitive, with Direwolf Jon edging Uasal, but we still need to see how the top two seeds perform.

Lastly, we move on to the Turkey Shoot. This was an absolute disaster for the Archers, with me .. Snin ranking the best of them all at a whopping 9th place. Way to go Archers, I would recommend you go learn what a bow is and then train with it tirelessly if you plan on competing again next time. Oh, wait, that means that I.. Snin.. am terrible at what I do. For example; the worst attempt probably in the history of the game was by .. yes, me ..Snin ..  when I posted a mammoth score of 4 in one attempt. It takes a lot of skill to be that bad. I hope I don’t get exiled from the regiment. *shakes head* Oh well, this was some great competition. Footman came away with the bronze medal by posting a monster score of 82 in just two attempts. Our own UC, Taymist, came away with the silver by posting two monster scores of 90 and 55, with an average of 72.5. And the gold goes to…..Kastchei!! Kast posted an unbelievable 104 points on one target... Great efforts by everyone.

Yes, this year has been great at the games, and we are all looking forward to the next Festival.

(Shuffles more pages around and looks at the time and realizes that he must be quick with the next part)

Snin: Here is a quick rundown of events so far this year at the arena with the Organization Game. There have been 19 matches completed so far this year, with Direwolf Jon and Jeannaisais coming out with a whopping nine wins between them. The titans of the Game have been relatively quiet this year, with Manriva, Taymist and Footman finishing just one match each. Several rookies have started their quest toward titanism this year, with Snin, Samuraiflip, Thewindsoftime, and el Nyn completing their training and participating in some games. Snin has had a rough start to his career by posting a gentleman’s record of 0-4. Below is the rundown of past events, current games, and standing records this year. Let’s see ‘em.

(A graphic of recent records is shown)

Direwolf Jon defeats: Jeannaisais, Kastchei, Snin twice, and Climhazzard

Jeannaisais defeats: MG Corki, Snin twice, and Climhazzard

MG Corki defeats: North Star, Uasal Arach, and Horus

Uasal defeats: Jeannaisais twice

Footman defeats: Mystica

Taymist defeats: Kastchei

Kastchei defeats: Climhazzard

North Star defeats: Amavia

Manriva defeats: Uasal Arach

Currently, there are an astounding nine matches that are underway. Snin is participating in a remarkable five of them. I'd say that is stretching himself just a bit thin. Bold strategy to say the least, but we shall see how it pans out next month. There was also one misfire of a game, where some players were reportedly using faulty stats. And this just in, it appears that bribery has also been a part of some players’ strategies. I can’t believe that some players would stoop to that level. *Looks around and sees everyone glaring at him* What, all I did was give Bridmorgan's horse a bag of oats in order to make the game more…..interesting.

(Current matches shown in another graphic)

Snin vs. Direwolf Jon

Thewindsoftime vs. Climhazzard Redux

Snin vs. el Nyn ~Battle of the Woodsmen~

Climhazzard vs. Snin

Jeannaisais vs. Snin

Bridmorgan vs. Snin

Direwolf Jon vs. Bridmorgan ~Battle of the Engaged~

MG Corki vs. Manriva ~Apocalypse Now!

Footman vs. Taymist ~Battle of the Titans~

The standings for the year are shown here. It’s still anyone’s game for the best record by the end of the year.

(Standings in yet another)

Direwolf Jon (5-0)

Jeannaisais (4-3)

MG Corki (3-1)

Uasal Arach (2-2)

Kastchei (1-2)

North Star (1-1)

Footman (1-0)

Taymist (1-0)

Manriva (1-0)

Snin (0-4)

Climhazzard (0-3)

Horus (0-1)

Mystica (0-1)

Amavia (0-1)

Lastly, it is time to report on upgrades. There are far too many to go into details, with everyone upgrading their stats to kick as…umm ...kick butt in the games.

Well, that is all from me, back to you ya ol' geez….. err... Manny.

Manny:( looking back from off camera a bit confused and a little nonplussed) Umm.. Good report there Snin, We umm ah.... Thanks sport.. nice report .. we ahhhh...

Manny: (with a finger to one ear, distracted) ...."Well as you all can see my partner Mr. Pink isn't here at the moment. Just had a report that he has left the building. But a crew is trailing him and maybe .. just maybe we'll hear from him shortly, who knows with the mysterious Pink one .. most anything is possible. In the meantime here are some partial scores from festival events in progress...In one Sword Fight Final we have Taymist; What the? oh, partial.. my bad. I trail in the other fight with ..... HOW MANY? Which of you louts is writing THIS STUFF! And where are the PETA knuckleheads when ya need em? Footman, losing in his heat at the Horse Race is reported to have carried his mount across the finish line.. IN HIS FLAMIN BELLY!!

(Mr. Pink ducks away from the camera crew into the nearest outhouse. The camera comes up to the rickety outhouse, and through a crack, Mr. Pink can be seen drinking from a flask and making bowel movement sounds with his hand under his armpit.)

Camera man: Mr. Pink, are you ok in there?

Mr. Pink: Yeah, doing fine, just had some f@geetahs last night and they ran right through me. Be out in a minute.

Camera man: Fajitas, Mr. Pink? We can see you in there drinking, sir…

Mr. Pink: (barging out of the outhouse and screaming) What?! A guy can’t get a drink in private? 3 months in a mental institute to try and cure my multiple personality disorder and not a SINGLE DROP TO DRINK!! Do you know what that can do to a man?! It can DRIVE YOU INSANE!!!

Camera Man: Sir, we’re live.

Mr. Pink: (with a look of shock, then gathering himself, tucking his shirt in and straightening his tie) Tonight we talk with my co-anchor Riva, The Man, Manny about the significance of the Org Game, its impact on The Band of the Red Hand, and one of the Legends that has excelled at the Game! Riva, back to you while I head back up there! (pauses, then to the Camera Man) Turn that *bleep* off, so I can chug this CC before I get up there!!

Manny: (scrambling to fill time) Well.. guess we found Mr. Pink... my co-anchor seems to be in a bit of a crisis. Just Showwwwws ta go ya'.. It's always somethin'. One minute yer ridin yer mule to work the next yer hidin' in a outhouse swillin Combat Cognac.. Oh well, The Wheel Weaves ....................

Mr. Pink: (entering rather unsteadily, and not quite as dapper as earlier) Heyyyy, Manny! What’s shakin? So let’s talk about what the Org Game has done for the Band, besides making me a raging lush!

Manny: Speaking for myself, it's given me an outlet to hack, slash, brutalize and ventilate many of The Bands denizens. In a good way of course! I enjoy the "whats goin to happen next" aspect. Who can tell how the dice will tumble I guess you could say.

Mr. Pink: That is an interesting point, Manny! I feel that the Org Game has given senior Banders something to keep them interested and active. Some of the regular players have something to strive for when they’ve attained the highest rank. A reason to participate in activities that earn Org points, which translate directly into Game Points. But not only do people like to earn things through fighting, festival participation, and Org points, but the main reason the Org Game appeals is the way the fights play out. Folks try to get creative with what happens during the fights. Not many people would consider a sea bass a lethal weapon, but I’ve seen an Org game won with such a weapon! One of the most creative fighters, would be the Band’s Under Commander, Taymist, and the man that knows her best is the man to my right

Manny: Left, Pinky

Mr. Pink: The man to my left, Manny, the Auld Mold River, Riva… I need a drink more than I need air right now.

Manny: (looking at Mr. Pink like he’s a flamin' moron) Pinkster... You need a drink like you need another hole in yer' head. I know someone who knows a guy who said he talked to a guy who is acquainted with a guy who can arrange that actually. In a Good Way of course.... Yes my pickled friend, the UC is a very creative fighter. She can out think, out drink, out stin..... out .. umm fight! yeah, out fight any Bander around even on a bad day. I have been fortunate to meet her and survive on several occasions, though by the splinters of my teeth. Although I think I have yet to whup her backside in a Festival. Or Footman's for that matter, he's another who is as likely to drop a house on you as to let the air outta you with a blade... Very disconcerting to tangle with, so he is..

Mr. Pink: Footman?! Waste of space, air sucker is what he is, but, Hey! Who am I to know what's what... And in breaking news, rumors abound that the Org Game may just be hosting Olympic style games in the near to distant future! Start earning those GP now so that you'll be ready to compete!! Stay tuned to future Game Center broadcasts for further information on this late breaking story!!

Manny:Well Ladies and Gentlefish .. That's another edition of Game Center. Join us next time when we will discuss the ramifications of the rising price of oil fish and how that effects the climate in Kandor... Huh? Oh.. wrong teleprompter... Ummm... We'll have a report on Dwarf Tossing and how it's all the rage in Ebou Darii Taverns and Hells.. Until Next Time then, I'm Auld Manriva ...

Mr. Pink: (taking a breath from swilling his CC) An ahm ME! Good night and good fight!!

News From The Range!

(by Snin)

Once again, greetings fellow Banders and DMer’s from all of us here at the Range.  It has been another great month here at the Range with many new Recruits going through their training and fellow Archers livening things up with much spamming and fun conversations.  So without further delay, here is the scoop from the most joking Regiments of the Band:

New Archers

This month the Archer’s were pleased to welcome a new member to our ranks.  Barracuda was promoted to the rank of Private and decided to join the Archers at the middle of this month.  He was a great recruit during his time with our regiment and will be a valuable member now that he has officially joined our ranks.  We are all looking forward to getting to know him further and it will be nice to have yet another new face around the Range.

Archer of the Month

In the first issue of this years Hornsounder, a new award was introduced that recognized the efforts and achievements of current Archers.  A collection of Arrows, each representing an effort made by an individual to help the regiment or the Band in general, is conducted at the end of each month.  Our own Captain-General, Sora Jeannaisais, was the first recipient of the award in January.  Snin clutched the award for February in a tight victory over Dragonlover

March saw yet another tight race as all of the Archers were very active in the regiment and the Band in general.  However, despite everyone’s great efforts, there can be only one winner.  And once again, for the second straight month, Snin came out on top with the most arrows, and clutches the March award.  *Spit-shines the medals and pats himself on the back*

Promotions

Throughout this last month, the Archers have seen several of their own promoted.

April 1st Promotions:

From Sergeant to Under-Lieutenant

Udr. Lt. snin83 of the Archers

From Sergeant to Master Sergeant

Mst. Sgt. Samuraiflip05 of the Archers

From Corporal to Master Sergeant

Mst. Sgt. el Nynaeve of the Archers

April 15th Promotions:

From Master Sergeant to Under-Lieutenant

Udr. Lt. el Nynaeve of the Archers

From Raw Recruit to Private

Pvt. Barracuda of the Archers

Congratulations to everyone who saw a promotion on their efforts.  A special congratulation once again this month to El Nynaeve for attaining the rank of Under-Lieutenant in such a short time.  Her time and presence at the Range have been invaluable and appreciated.  *mutters to self on how she is probably going to outrank him come the next promotion period*

New Term, New Leadership

As most of you know, a new term is fast approaching, which means that new appointments are going to be made for leadership of the regiments.  For the past few terms, Sora Jeannaisais, the current Captain-General, has donated her time selflessly to helping rebuild and lead the Archer’s regiment to what it is today.  Sadly, she will most likely be stepping aside to let someone else take charge, as RL issues will be requiring more of her time.  She has done a fantastic job at helping the regiment get back on its feet and has left some large shoes to fill when a new appointment is made.  This month saw many promotions, as seen in the previous section, and thankfully, there are now more Archer’s that have the appropriate rank to apply for senior leadership of the regiment.  We are all looking forward to seeing how the new leadership will take charge and keep things moving as they have so well now for the last few terms.

RLO Business from the Range

The Range was a busy place again with new Raw Recruits joining us for their training.  The first recruit of the month was Albion.  He was a busy recruit posting all over the place in the Range.  He wrote a funny article about his time working at an archery range and getting an unusual wound, and also kept the Archer’s throats from drying out at the Broken Arrow II bar.  Finally, he predicted everyone’s unusual fortunes at the Nutty Fortune Telling Tent.  Next, Elegost joined us.  He wrote a great JoTS compilation about the magical singing of an arrows flight.  Then, he provided services to Banders by running a fletchers shop and then served all of the Archers at the Flaming Shot Pub II.  The lovely Nocturne then signed in and conducted her week with us.  She wrote a great article that is presented in this months issue under the Raw Recruits section.  She then conducted a great interview with the Senior RLO, Samuraiflip05, and then spent some time in the dunk tank, quizzing the Archer’s on their WoT knowledge.  Finally, the last RR to complete their time with us this month was Moghedian.  She wrote a great JoTS verse about Silverbow, and then provided great entertainment in the Entertainment thread as well as served drinks to the Archer’s at Gasoline Alley II.  This was a great bunch of recruits this month, and we are looking forward to more in the future as the Band expands its numbers.

Redarm Business from the Range

Everyone was pretty lawful this month at the Range.  There was a minor brawl that broke out in the Flaming Shot Pub II where some of the brawlers brushed the edge of the law.  There was, however, one spotfine issued to an Archer who had always prided herself on her lawful behavior and clean record.  Our own CG, Sora Jeannaisais, was caught sleeping in the Broken Arrow Tavern II with a Battle Brew in hand that consequently was spilled to the floor.  The RA’s are keeping a good eye on things in the Range and making sure that the Bands laws are being upheld.

The Journey to Assassin

The goal of an Archer is to reach the deadly rank of assassin.  This is achieved by accomplishing tasks as first an apprentice and then a Journeyman/Journeywoman.  Here is where currently active Archers are at in their Journey:

Apprentices:  Amavia, Samuraiflip, Corki (MG), Iron Monk, Tharengore, Snin, El Nynaeve, and Barracuda

Journeyman/woman:  Dragonlover, and Alishandra (our very own BG and LG)

Assassin:  Jeannaisais (of course, the CG)

Regimental Competition

The Archers had a great showing in the March Regimental Competition, coming in second place, just behind the Cavalry.  It was a great event and we all learned a great deal about Irish history and fun facts.  April’s Regimental Competition is being conducted through the annual Spring Festival, the Bel Tine.  There are several games that are played throughout the festival, drawing on all specialties that the Band has.  An impressive five Arches signed up for the games, more than any other regiment, but are the extreme underdogs in all of the events.  Snin attained the highest position in the rankings for the Archers with the 10th position.  Three Archer’s have done very well in the games by advancing to the finals in several events.  Sora Jeannaisais had a good showing in the Horse Race, advancing all the way to the finals.  Samuraiflip showed his talent off at the Caber Toss, advancing to the finals and posting a promising score.  Snin relied more on luck rather than skill in the Joust by advancing to the finals there.  More on that in the Organization Game section.  Finally, the Archer’s, who are supposedly advanced in their skills with the bow, displayed very poor results in the archery events at the games.  They did not advance past the semi-finals in the Biathlon and placed no higher than 9th in the Turkey Shoot.  We certainly have our work cut out for us if we plan to compete next year.

Well, that is all this month.  Goodbye!!

From the Horse’s Mouth ~ News of the Cavalry!

(By Paladin Uasal)

Greetings from the Yard!!

Greetings from the Cavalry! We have had a wonderful month. We’ve welcomed a new Knight, had lots of promotions, new members, jousts and fun. So sit back, relax and join us in our telling of the tale of the Cav’s exploits for the month of April.

First I’d like to thank DJ for his time and effort writing the Cav Article. He has recently stepped down from the position as Sr Cav Reporter. I have stepped in the take his place and I know I will have some big shoes to fill. Thank you DJ for all you have done.

In other news:

We had four birthdays in our ranks this month, Feral, Horn, Mayleigh, and Tallanvor. We won’t ask the ladies their age.  Happy Birthday! May each of you have many more both in RL and here with us in the Band.

The Cav RA’s have been ever diligent this month. Why they even caught Sir Uasal stealing MG-Brew. Shame on you Uasal…and a Paladin to boot. RA Steel took the honors in this Spot Fine. Let’s hope there won’t be a repeat theft.

The Cavalry saw a banner month in promotions. Nine people were promoted. Mayleigh went from Sergeant to Under-Lieutenant in one month. Now that’s dedication. Sir Uasal joined the ranks of Banner-Captain. That makes seven Cav Banner-Captains! Go CAV!

From Captain to Banner-Captain

Bnr. Capt. Uasal Arach of the Cavalry

From Senior-Lieutenant to Lieutenant-Captain

Lt. Capt. Stefania Sedai of the Cavalry

From Master Sergeant to Under-Lieutenant

Udr. Lt. Mayleigh of the Cavalry

From Sergeant to Master Sergeant

Mst. Sgt. Tigara of the Cavalry

From Corporal to Master Sergeant

Mst. Sgt. Mayleigh of the Cavalry

From Corporal to Sergeant

Sgt. Diamondmask of the Cavalry

From Private First Class to Corporal

Cpl. Cairos of the Cavalry

From Raw Recruit to Private First Class

P.F.C. Lord Josh Tallanvor of the Cavalry

P.F.C. Hazmite of the Cavalry

And there you have it from the horses mouth!

Jousting Arena

(by Diamondmask)

The April jousting competitions proved exciting and varied. There were truly magnificent performances by both the combatants and the spectators! The April storms produced lightening which made it more interesting considering our heroes were all in amour!

RR Jousts

RR Nocturne vs. Lady Stefania/Paladin DJ

Play Interrupted (2 all so far)

Once again in this Arena a raw recruit faced not one but two Paladin Knights. The veteran Knight Lady Stefania launched her attack on RR Nocturne by demanding to know the name Faile first chose for herself, to the amusement of Perrin. Nocturne answered Mandarb - showing she was not going to be intimidated by the Lady Knight. Then she squared off with the question of who was LTT's wife. Lady Stef successfully deflected Nocturne's lance and came back with "who was the Aiel who made Faile gaishain?" At this point the crowd went mad with excitement (and too many runts and coke). Never write off Nocturne - she replied "Rolan" and sent a zinger of her own at Paladin DJ - who stood in for Lady Stefania who sadly had to leave the Arena due to a crisis on her borders. Ever enthusiastic, Sir DJ replied quickly and launched his own offensive with the superb - how many high collared coats Moiraine had placed in Rand's wardrobe in Fal Dara. An almost unstoppable charge. The crowd went wild in anticipation - then the announcement was made - RR Nocturne had been urgently redeployed and the competition will have to be resumed on her return from her mission.

Squire Mayleigh vs. Lady Stefania

Lady Stefania 3 - 0 Squire Mayleigh

An all female competition this one - between a knight and her squire which added spice to the event! The formidable Lady Stefania kicked her mount into action, showing she would give no quarter to her squire, by asking her to name the High Seat of Mintear! Squire Mayleigh was unable to answer this, but remained seated on her steed. Not showing an ounce of fear, Mayleigh demands of her knight the places Suroth was High Lady of. It was an outstanding effort but Lady Stef showed her mettle and replied Suroth was High Lady of Asinbayer and Barsabba. Stefania rode mercilessly at Mayleigh, wanting the names of Elayne's whitehead maidservant and the two young tirewomen she was training. This proved too much for the brave squire, who was unhorsed. Once back in the saddle, May bravely attacked with wanting Stefania to name the 9 dead Asha'man. This squire has a style all of her own, but Lady Stef came back with the correct answer. Bizarrely both competitors have now abandoned their mounts and are charging on foot! Who is Otarin? shouts Mayleigh as she readies herself for impact. With as much dignity as she can muster she replies that he was one of the heroes called by the Horn of Valere in Falme. This unique competition is finally over and while the talented Lady Stefania deservedly won the game, Mayleigh proved her bravery and showed great honor and will be a dangerous opponent when her training is complete.

RR Barracuda vs. Paladin DJ

RR Barracuda 0 - Paladin DJ 0

Fireworks marked the start of this jousting event and was reflected in a fierce struggle between these two combatants. It started with Paladin DJ thundering towards RR Barracuda with the tried and true play of what is 'Heron Wading in the Rushes' is good practice for. But Barracuda was ready for him and deflected him confidently, to the delight of the crowd. RR Barracuda forged ahead with his lance wanting to know who was the innkeeper at the Queens Blessing. Paladin DJ avoided this strike with a slick body twist at the last minute with "Basel Gill". Paladin DJ taking the measure of his opponent attacked with the question of Loial's age. Barracuda handled the danger without flinching. Deciding to pile on the pressure, the fearless Barracuda lowered his lance, riding at DJ with all possible speed, demanding where Matt was when the bond with the knife was broken. A seasoned campaigner Paladin DJ's experience showed as he kept his nerve - replying the White Tower. Invigorated by this Lady's encouragement from the stand, DJ renewed his attack with the very impressive charge of where were the soldiers of Fal Dara were heading while Moiraine and the Emond's Fielders were going to the Eye of the World. You could have heard a pin drop in the Arena. Then to the surprise and delight of the crowd, Barracuda avoided disaster with his last attempt to win this competition from Paladin DJ with what was the name of the tallest of the Mydraals. This last pass showed how serious the combatants were about this competition when the wily old Wolf struck at the RR with Shadar Haran. This tense competition ended with a well deserved draw - both gentlemen showing great courage and depth of knowledge.

Notes from the LG

(by Paladin Uasal)

This has been an exciting month for our Squire Program. Squire Mayleigh declared for the Sarmatian Order and has completed her Squire Vigil with her Knight Lady Stefania. Now that was an interesting Vigil. Lots of girl talk and even a streaking at the end. Squire Diamondmask declared for the Templar Order and is currently in her Vigil with her Knight Sir Riva, the local Cav Pirate. Hopefully they will be finished soon….if we can get Riva away from the Bel Tine competitions lol.

We would like to introduce to the Band our newest Knight, Lady Mayleigh. Her knighting ceremony was a sight to behold with our own Band XO Lady Bridmorgan having the honors of knighting Lady Mayleigh. Congratulations Lady Mayleigh!

Notes from the BG

(by Lady Stefania)

Our first Page during the month of April has been Lord Josh Tallanvor. He made quite an impression on the Templars, the Arthurians had him opening a school for “barbaric Sarms”, and then while actually with the Sarmatians he was able to cause all types of chaos! Tall now heads over to Paladin Uasal to begin his time as a Squire! We wish him all the best in choosing his Order!

Page number two is the one, the only, Hazmite! He made a stop in with the Arthurians where he got a great coat of arms. This son of Uasal Arach hasn’t had tons of internet access, so his page time is progressing slowly, but we know that soon he will be a knight in the grand tradition of his father!

I am also excited to note that Nocturne has chosen to join with us in the Cavalry, so she will soon be beginning her time as a page with our illustrious Orders. Stay tuned to see where she ends up!!!

An award has been offered for information leading to the return of Pages Cairos and Oddette. We here in the page recovery program have received many leads (including one involving the Hell’s Angels and a sponge cake that, although entertaining, lacked plausibility), but unfortunately none have panned out. We wait anxiously for their return.

RLO: Realm of the Lost Ones

(by Lady Stefania)

Yeah, I need a cute title for this article. You know, something original. I was thinking of going with a soap opera theme. But on with the report.

*grimaces* I hate when I misplace Raw Recruits. Not only does it reflect poorly on me as an RLO, but then XO Bridmorgan beats me with a rubber hose until I cry. So you will understand that I was particularly distressed in April since I have been unable to locate RR Jelly as well as RR Dandrius. They both signed in only to disappear into the dark recesses of the unknown. I have conducted a thorough search of the stables and caves, as well as DJ’s Den (cause you can never be too careful), but they are yet to turn up. If anyone finds them, please let me know before Brid gets to me!!!!

There was no disappearing for RR Nocturne. This young lady made herself right at home with a successful (if somewhat delayed) Joust against yours truly and an exhilarating game of 20 Questions. The members of the Cav really took to this recruit. In fact, Nocturne is now calling the Cav home! And we are more than thrilled to have her!!!

RR Moghedian’s time in the Cavalry ended all too soon. She will be stopping back by the Yard soon to tie up a few loose ends. Can’t wait to see what fun she’ll be able to get up to!

What to say about RR Myndrunner? Hmmm……he has already rejected my theory that this rogue gleeman is a clone of our resident pirate Auld Manriva, but I am still hopeful that I will get the opportunity to lock those two in a room together and see what emerges!!! But RR Mynd has kept the whole Cav in stitches while with us. He and Uasal have just finished a particularly entertaining joust involving a mule named Petunia! He also did a great job on DJ’s Scavenger Hunt. I have personally conspired to keep this RR from the other regiments (but don’t tell Brid! The hose, you know?)

That’ll about do it for this RLO. Stay tuned for more developments on “As the Horse Turns”. No? How about “RR’s of Our Lives”? “All My RR’s”? I’ll keep working on that……

Welcome to Infantry Row!

(by Kara J)

Welcome to Infantry Row once again :)

We've had a lot of happenings this month, including three Bandings, one including an almighty drinking-fest that took in the sites of the whole Band.

First things first a warm welcome to those RR's that have passed through our barracks this month, each have been a pleasure to torture guide and we wish them all the best as they move on to the other regiments.

Special mention goes to Myndrunner, who was an exemplary recruit, and had us all in stitches time and again with his poems, songs and jokes.

We have also had Climhazzard and Arrandion celebrating something this month. Arrandion has celebrated completing his first Year at the Band, here's to the next one!

Clim has celebrated his reaching 1000 posts. That's some posting!

Onto the Bandings

Kedomat and Katiora started off the Banding at the beginning of April. Congratulations go to both of them. Unfortunately shortly after the Banding, Kedomat had to leave due to RL, so we wish him all the best and hope that he can return to us soon.

The next Banding occurred between Moose of the Cavalry and yours truly, which took many by surprise. Long may our Banding last!

Last but by no means least, our very own Taymist and Footman Banded. Of course they couldn't do it simply. They began it with a drinking competition, starting in the Tavern of the Band if the Red Hand in the Infantry. When they had drunk it dry, they moved to the Archers Range, then to the Cavalry and then to the Rhythm and Brew Bar, before finally returning...how, we're not sure...to the barracks after a mighty battle of some kind...which seems to grow bigger with the telling!  Sometime in between all that they got Banded and we wish them the best of luck!  (Tay will need it! ;))

In Other News

The Infantry ICQ continues to go well. This month featured a Mafia game....the Mafia won...this time......We innocents are certain it'll not happen again. Who'd have thought Tay and Talya could be so evil??  :o

The Mahdi programme is also going well, the Mahdis are working through it at their own pace under the watchful eyes of their Morats.

Unfortunately it appears the CG curse has swallowed up Demonspawn. His laptop has finally given up the ghost and, along with more pressure at work, it appears that he'll not be back with us for a while. :( We wish him all the best though and hope that he can come back to us soon.

The Infantry are doing well in the Festival, with several of our members reaching the final stages. Clim also deserves a mention for having a record number of attempts in the Turkey shoot. Unfortunately we came last in the March Regimental Competition, but we shall fight back!

Finally, congratulations goes to those of us who have been promoted this month. Good work all of you!

Raw Recruits of the Band

(by Lady Bridmorgan, XO)

For any future Banders out there, the Raw Recruit Program is how we initiate all new members to our Org. Each Recruit spends a week with our three regiments in turn, doing fun tasks and getting to know members. At the end of the three weeks they may choose a Regiment to join.

During the month of April we had three Recruits graduate and two receive their RR Stripe!!! They were Barracuda who chose the Archers,  Nocturne who chose the Cavalry and thewindsoftime who chose the Infantry.   Congratulations to you all and I know you'll do your new Regiments proud!

The Outstanding Recruit of the Month is the Recruit that has stood out to me as being the most motivated and dedicated. The Outstanding Recruit must excel amongst his/her peers and a reward for this prestigious title is the prize of one org point.

The Outstanding Recruit for the month of April is:  Myndrunner

Don’t forget to offer your congratulations the next time you see him!

Of the Recruits choosing Regiments the statistics for the new year are:

5 - Infantry

7 - Cavalry

4 - Archers

Missing In Action figures are very reasonable with 7 out of 26 Recruits going MIA this year and we have six new Recruits working their way through their training at the moment. A warm welcome to Moghedian, Albion, Elegost, Myndrunner, Dandrius and Blaze who are currently going through their Recruit time.

Our Recruits ran the gambit of tasks from crazy fortune telling to 20 questions, from gleeman tales to fletcher shops!  Check out the Regimental Articles for more information on their tasks!

I would like to thank the RLOs of this term who have made my job easy.  It was a great term thanks to you all!!

RLOs for the March/April Term:

Archers:

Samuraiflip

Snin

Cavalry:

Lady Stefania

Lord Horn

Infantry:

Arrandion

Kastchei

Next terms RLOs will be announced shortly at DM.

See you next month with more RR antics!

The Redarm Report

(by Auld Manriva)

Dear Readers... I sit here grief stricken tonight. Trying to think of some way to express to you the profoundly sad intel that has been relayed to me by secret means only known to myself and one or maybe five others.."Kat... would you feed the courier pigeons and water the little flyin' rats pretty please? Hmmmm? I must somehow relate this awful news to our readers and I just cannot bear to look at the little critters who bore this to us on feathered wing."

Ooops! Ummm... Well, I know of only one way to approach this and that is head on. So here it is in all it's sadly tacky and unfashionably tawdry glory.

There has been an outbreak of corrosio.... coricidin... corrugated...cornfusion... ummmmm ... corrupshu... TAY! little help here! ..... CORRUPTION!! Thats the one!! Thanks Sis.. Corruption what an awful concept, corruption in the Band... How could such a thing hap............

NO, NO, NO... not from the RA's you buncha conspiracy in every corner lubbers ... Corruption where it's most deadly, most dastardly, most likely to succeed, most likely to foster weeds, most likely to guzzle fosters, most likely to foster the most guzzling............. STOP THAT! Holy stuck on a silly phrase Batman.. What a redundant situation!

What we have here is a "Failyah ... tacommunicate".. Yes indeed.. a lack of communication without justification, undeniably, uncertifiably leading directly to corruption of the whole dang Band of the Red Hand. Excluding of course the Redarms. Who have battled this band wide scourge of corruption tooth and nail, fang and claw, furry cloak and rubber boot. Why they have gone to the wall repeatedly only to have their efforts thwarted time and time again by this veritable locust swarm, mudslide, overflowing cesspit of foul corruption..

To what corruption do I refer? ... I don't know.. What corruption? I ain't seen no corruption.. If any of you have seen any corruption; Welllllll.. Just point it out and I'll see that it's nipped in the bud, quashed, sent to file cabinet 13, rooted out, out sourced, source controlled, controlled en absentia, absented without leave.... Why I'll.... I'll........................... write about it next month too.

Moonlight cast an ethereal glow over the sleeping forms. Mounds of man and blanket stretched over the ground in twos and threes, each group centered on a fire pit’s glowing embers. Horses stood picketed along the outer boundary of the camp and the sickeningly sweet scent of manure permeated the air, blending with the reek of unwashed bodies. Irelynn had never been so close to an army before, and this cluster of men hardly counted as one, but she couldn’t see it as being a particularly enjoyable experience for the senses.

For three days she had held on to the stone Brendyn handed her, pondering over it and considering it, before she worked up the courage to show it to anyone else. Then it had taken an entire day of trying before anyone recognized the symbol. The first to admit to knowing of the red hand print was an old man who had grumbled about Dragonsworn and pointed a gnarled finger into the woods just north of the city. Subsequent questions had produced much the same response, only sometimes with more curses than grumbling, and once, from a hungry eyed young lad, with a look of awe.

But all those questions had lead her here, to a copse roughly three miles north of the city, to sit cross-legged on her brother’s blanket roll while he whispered in the ear of the dirty faced youth who had accosted her upon approaching the camp. The night watch, she supposed. Producing the imprinted stone had removed the lout’s blade from her throat, but judging from the looks that Brendyn was directing at her, coming under cover of darkness had been a bad idea.

Once more Irelynn studied her surroundings. Maybe fifty men, she decided. The closest to her shifted in his sleep and in the twilight she could just make out the beginnings of whiskers on his cheeks. He was young, too. She wondered if all the “men” were this young.

“You shouldn’t have come at this hour. You could have been killed.” Brendyn stood over her now, his face lined in shadows, looking more like her father than Irelynn ever remembered. The guard had moved on. Irelynn could just make out his footfalls somewhere behind her.

“It seemed best to come here in secret. The people who gave me directions……they didn’t seem happy that you all were here.”

Chuckling, Brendyn sat down on the ground across from her and folded his lanky legs up under himself. Except for the gnawing emptiness in her belly and the sense of doom that hung over her head, Irelynn could almost pretend that she and her brother were back at home around a campfire.

“No,” he laughed, “A city is never happy when an army of legend lies camped on its doorsteps!”

Incredulous, Irelynn turned to peer again at the sleeping youth nearest her. “This is an army of legend? There are barely fifty of you, Brendyn. ”

“Here there are barely fifty, Irelynn, but we are going to join with the rest. Ervan Tomgil, he’s our leader, he has actually been with them. Says there are hundreds, maybe thousands. And they have a commander who they say never looses a battle! Can you imagine? To never loose a battle!” Brendyn’s voice grew with fervor as he spoke.

Brendyn, I haven’t heard of any such army. Who are they? Where are they?”

Brendyn leaned close and pitched his voice low for her ear. His whisper held a reverent, almost worshipful tone. “The Band of the Red Hand. And I don’t know where they are, but Ervan says that he will find them and that when he does we’ll all join the ranks. We’ll be heroes!”

Irelynn sat for a moment, regarding her brother by the light of the glowing embers. He had grown, of course, in the years since she’d seen him. She herself was seventeen, so she supposed that would make him about twenty-two now. His face was chiseled, a man’s face, with her father’s square jaw and her mother’s sharp nose. Those dark eyes that she remembered so well held an intensity when he spoke of the army, but at other times they seemed almost to peer inwards. She wondered what her brother had been through to make him almost unable to meet her eyes.

Brendyn,” she asked after a moment, “what happened to Father?”

For what seemed like forever that last word hung between them. Brendyn studied his hands, the intensity of the moment before now vanished. Finally, he raised his head. “I wasn’t there. Don’t know that I could have changed it if I had been. Was a siege on the city, they said. Some siege. Two houses, couple hundred men. Foolishness.” He tossed his head in consternation. “Father was fighting with the pike men. They were to take the East Gate, but the guards on the inside were warned. They must have been. Archers were waiting on the walls. They never saw it coming.”

Irelynn nodded slowly. She’d expected much them same. “And Dradyn? What of him?”

Brendyn grimaced and worked his shoulders as though the answer made him uncomfortable. “As soon as word reached us of father’s death, we decided to sneak away. We’d been talking about it long before. Decided to leave under cover of night and head in opposite directions to throw off any trackers. We were to meet here in Cairhien in twenty days. I was slow in coming since I met up with Ervan and the rest, but I’ve been here nearly two weeks now. I’ve not seen him.”

Hope blossomed in Irelynn’s mind. “Well, if he told you that he would meet you here then he must be in the city, Brendyn, and now I am here to help you look!”

Brendyn leaned close again, but this time his eyes were filled with apprehension as he surveyed his sleeping companions. “But they are going to want to move on soon. I don’t know how much longer I can keep them here waiting. They didn’t want to stop here in the first place but I begged them to let me meet my brother. Everyday I go into the city and search and everyday I come back empty handed. They are eager to join the Band. One day soon they are going to decided that I’ve searched enough and leave out. When they do I am going to have to go with them whether I’ve found Dradyn or not.”

Irelynn couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You would leave your brother? And what about me? We could be together again. We could be a family.”

“You could come with me,” he said, his voice bordering on pleading. “The men here, they’re a rough sort, but they are good enough. Anyways, I could protect you. And I’m sure there’d be a job for you with the Band. Washing or cooking. We could make a life of it.”

She shook her head. “Not if it means abandoning Dradyn.”

“We’re not abandoning him if he’s not here!” Brendyn objected. “The Band means safety. It means a place to belong. I can’t loose that.”

Her mind ran back over the past couple weeks: the sleepless nights spent under a cart and the days spent clutching her belt knife, the run-ins with the civil guard, all the missed meals. A place to belong again sounded nice. With tears in her eyes, Irelynn nodded agreement. “But, please, just a few more days here. We’ll look together. If we don’t find him by then, I will move on with you.”

That night as she stretched out on borrowed blankets near her brother, Irelynn’s mind began forming a plan. She would not leave Dradyn behind.

The Art of Fletching Arrows

(by RR Nocturne)

What is fletching?  Simply put, fletching is the method used to

Aerodynamically stabilize arrows by using materials such as feathers.

So, how do we do it?

Shafts: First, start with straight shafting material.  Try to pick shafts as straight as you can get them. One way to do this is to hold them up and sight down the length of the shaft and rotate it.  Since you’ll  be cutting them shorter its okay if the ends take some bend. In reality, you’ll almost never find perfectly straight shaft material. You want to avoid really bendy material. If you get pieces that are more or less straight, you may get away with not doing any subsequent straightening.  The other thing to look at is the grain. Ideally, it should run the length of the shaft. If the grain runs off at a sharp angle the arrow will  break at that point if it hits something hard.

To prepare the shafts,  cut them to the proper draw length. If in doubt make the arrows a few inches longer than you think you’ll need them, and then put a finished arrow on the bow and pull it. Once you know your draw length its easy to cut shafts to that length. Cut the nock using three (or four) blades taped together so that the teeth of the blades face in opposite directions. It’s a good idea to clamp the shaft into something as you cut the nock.  Try to keep the cuts as vertical as possible.

Finally, you have to sand and seal the shafts. This will prevent the wood from warping.  Now you’re ready to add the feathers.

Feathers: The first thing you need to do is split them in half along the quill. Then cut off the thick bottom of the quill (where it was stuck in the bird). Once you’ve done this, you want to reduce the quill a bit, then cut it in half. Note that flight feathers only have one half, and tail feathers have two. Each half feather will naturally spin the arrow either clockwise or counter clockwise. Sort the fletches that you are making into sets of threes all with the same spin to them. Don't mix them!

Sinew: Is used for binding on fletches. The tendons of animals is an excellent choice. It is strong and (as long as it’s dry) will pretty much last forever.  If it’s wet, it’ll only Seve as a calling card to hungry dogs. If sinew isn‘t your thing, use cotton thread .

Tying on fletches with sinew: soak the sinew in water for up to a few days. This makes them soft and pliable. More than a few days just makes them smell. Take a shaft, a fletch, and a sinew thread. Put the fletch against the shaft to see where it should be positioned. Remember to leave space for your fingers above the nock. . Use the fletch to figure out where the front end of the fletches will be, and at that point wrap the sinew once around the shaft. If you mash the end of the sinew thread a bit it will tend to stay on the shaft and make your life easier. Then lay the front end of the first fletch so that it is 90 degrees to the nock, with its front end laying on the sinew on the bow shaft. Wrap the sinew once or twice over the front bit of the fletch and around the shaft. Add the next fletch at about a third of the way around the shaft and repeat. Then place the last fletch 120 degrees from the two fletches that are already tied on. Wrap the remainder of the sinew thread around the shaft totally covering the front edges of the fletching. Now if you want you can take them out, stick on the point of your choice, and shoot them.

Trimming the fletches: It‘s always nice to trim the fletches into a uniform length.  Remember that like with all things cut or trimmed, its easier to shorten the feathers than to lengthen them again. Higher fletches mean greater stability. Shorter ones are faster.

Battle Brew:  A Strategic Instrument of Battle?

(by RR Myndrunner)

It is often said that the Irish would have conquered the world if they had not invented whiskey.  Many of today’s military regiments discourage their soldiers from public intoxication and frown on public drunkenness.  Riding a horse while under the influence is a court martial offense, and many of the Children of the Light run “dry” battalions.

But what if drinking brew could actually improve a soldier’s performance in battle?  A study once lead by the late Herid Fel suggested that a steady diet of ale could actually loosen ones inhibitions and increase one’ s pain threshold.  He wrote, “Many of the survivors of the Trolloc Wars were nearly soused with drink and ale on a daily basis, and slew ten times more Myrdraal than those that were sober.”

Perhaps something is to be said for this study in that relieving one’s inhibitions also relieves one of ones fears.  The legendary leader of the Band of the Red Hand, Matrim Cauthon, had often been saved in battle by what was called “The Dark One’s Luck.”  Could the Dark One’s Luck been slang for being intoxicated?

Legends speak of an ancient warrior, known only as the Drunken Master, who would defeat numerous foes with only his bare fists.  The alcohol he would drink, called yellow wine in his homeland, would actually act as a stimulant to his synapses.  “He was a fierce warrior,” sites Fel, in his study on the topic.  “He could defeat many opponents so long as he maintained his blood alcohol level above 15%.”  Fel went on to site the rumor that this Drunken Master defeated Demandred in a showdown at Shayol Ghul.  Could alcohol in the blood stream actually protect one from the Dark One and his power?

drunkenmaster1.jpg

The Legendary Drunken Master, owns another Darkfriend!

Cleopatra of the Green Ajah adds some White Tower credibility to Herid Fel’s theories.  “I was what we call a Wilder when I first came to the tower,” a friend close to the Aes Sedai reported she said, “which is to mean that I began to dabble in the One Power long before reaching the protection of the tower.  Most wilders, like me, often build up barriers to protect ourselves from the dangers in messing with a power too great to fully understand.”

The Domani woman added, “I first began to break down this wall after a long night of drinking with some of my future warders.  The buzz that I had actually made touching saidar much easier…..as well as removing the clothes of a certain Illianer I met that night.”

Jaret Byar, the recently promoted Chief Inquisitor of the Children of the Light, disagrees.  “Public drunkenness is a deplorable crime and unbecoming of anyone who truly follows the light, let alone the valiant soldiers of the Children.”  He goes on to state “Alcohol consumption is truly the Dark One's business.  In our Legion, any of the Children who is found with alcohol in his blood while wearing the cloak shall be brought before me for questioning.”

bacon.jpg

Jaret Byar hates public drunkenness as much as Darkfriends.

Sgt. Saucey strongly disagrees with the Inquisitor.  "Aw, that's just a load of horse [manure]!!" he told the Hornsounder staff, "Battle Brew puts hair on yer flaming chin and give you bloody [intestinal fortitude]!!!  The Germans were drunk when they bombed Pearl Harbor!  Even the bloody Arthur flaming Hawkwing sauced himself up nice and good before he bombed the White Tower."  Many of the Sarge's raw recruits have been placed on a strict diet of Jack Daniels and kaff.  "I call it flaming Fade's [urine]!!  That drink will turn a flaming choir boy into a bloody death dealing Tyrannosaurus, just like me!  Besides, if a soldier can drink Fade's [urine], then the [expletive] will drink bloody anything!"

170px-Belushi_in_Animal_House.jpg

Sgt. Saucey with his new Battle Drink.

So, the debate continues, as the Band of the Red Hand puts Herid Fel's theories to the true test, much to the dismay of the Children of the Light.  Does alcohol impair a soldier’s judgment or improve one’s courage? If further studies prove Fel's theories to be sound, perhaps the Irish should have drunk more whiskey!

The Prophecy Begins

(by Sora Jea)

"What's this?" Crystal asked her friend when she saw a paper with words scribbled on it lying on the table between their beds.

"Its stuff you were mumbling in your sleep last night," Hannah explained from inside the closet.  "I probably didn't get it all though.  Besides, it's probably not that important."

"Maybe I can fill it in," Crystal said as her curiosity beckoned her to pick up the paper and take a closer look.  After reading through what her friend had discerned from her mumbling several times, Crystal immediately found a pen and began writing furiously, changing most of what Hannah had already written.

"'Five did come with one good friend to achieve a miracle long foretold and bring about the time of gold.  Two are smart and two have grace; another may some day betray, while the other leads the way.  They have none to lend them hand on these specific foretold lands.  By spirits bold through night, this riddle will meet its end.  In ten days, you will meet, and begin this miraculous feat.'"

Once she finished reading aloud what she had written to Hannah, Crystal glanced expectantly at her friend.  Hannah returned Crystal's look with an equal question before asking, "What do you think it means?"

"I don't know," Crystal said slowly, staring at the paper, wondering if she had even written it correctly or if it was pure nonsense considering it was unlike anything she had ever seen or heard.

"Is it a message telling us to do something?"  Hannah asked, trying to think of what it might mean.

"'Spirits bold through night," Crystal muttered, seemingly ignoring Hannah's question.  "It's definitely a message."

"But what is it telling us?"

"To meet....someone," Crystal said absentmindedly as she continued reading the paper on which she had written shat she could only classify as a prophecy.

"Ingoria wake up!  You're having a nightmare, wake up," Jennette yelled at Ingoria while shaking her.

"What was I doing?" Ingoria asked breathlessly after sitting bolt upright in her bed, frightened despite not being able to remember what had happened.

"You were screaming about some prophecy," Jennette explained, clearly shaken and confused by what she had heard her identical twin sister scream in her sleep.

"What did I say this time?" she asked with an almost disappointed sigh.  Nothing good had ever come from these nightmarish ramblings of hers.

"That we need to talk to Hannah and Crystal soon," Jennette answered, saying the names with slight disgust.

"Oh come on Jen, you can't be serious!"

"That's what you said Ingoria," Jen exclaimed with a shrug.

*

"Simon, are you ready to leave yet?" his mom hollered.

"Just five more minutes," he hollered back.

"All right, but we have to leave soon."

"I know Mom.  I'll be right down," Simon said, wishing he didn't have to go to the boarding school.  He knew it a good school but he was still afraid of what might happen.

"All set," Simon said as he walked down the stairs a few minutes later.  His dad had already left for work after saying goodbye that morning and being sure to leave the hovercraft he recently bought for Simon and his mother to use.  It took nearly an hour to arrive at the boarding school, driving through the majority of the town he was used to living in before seeing large open fields with only one large building within their midst.  Simon knew that this could only be the boarding school he would attend and, he noted with severe disappointment, he felt like he was in the middle of nowhere.

His sense of nowhere soon dissipated when he noticed that the entire student body was waiting outside.  he assumed this was a custom because of how many seemed perturbed, but Simon quickly forgot about those boys when he noticed who was standing next to their principal.  He had heard about how two complete strangers could look somewhat alike, but the similarities were simply way too close for this to be mere coincidence.  Staring at the young boy, Simon felt as though he was looking in a mirror.

"Welcome to Fellow's Boarding School, Simon.  I'm Principal Reynolds and this," Principal Reynolds said, waving a hand toward the young man by his side, "is your roommate, Noshi."

"Follow me," Noshi said quickly, grinning at the principal to let him know he had it from there.  Simon glanced back toward where his mother still waited in their hovercraft, confused.  "We're on the top floor," Noshi continued, leading the way toward the stairs.  "Don't worry about your luggage, I can take care of it later."

Simon no longer cared how or why he was at this school.  All he knew was that there was a reason he had arrived at this particular place.  During the seemingly endless journey up the many flights of stairs, Simon began to wonder about the many thing she had discovered in the last few minutes.  He no longer lived at home with his parents, he had met another boy his age who looked all but identical to him and, most importantly, this new twin of his already seemed strange.

"Can you guess which door we go through now?" Noshi asked playfully once they had reached the top floor.

"The only one I can see," Simon said dryly, beginning to wonder if he would ever like the guy.  After opening the door inward, Noshi gestured for Simon to enter first.  As he did, all of his doubts suddenly washed away in the extravagance of the room.  Blinking several times, Simon still wondered if he was truly seeing what he thought he was.  "I don't believe it," Simon said breathlessly, his mouth agape in shock.

"Believe it," Noshi said with a broad smile.  "Oh, and if you check the closet, you'll find your luggage."

"How?" Simon asked as he peered into the closet and, with another jolt of shock, realized that his luggage was all there, every last piece.  "How did you do that?  All of this, all of my luggage was down ten flights of stairs and now, its all sitting in a nice and neat little pile in the closet!"

"yep," Noshi said, pleased to have shown off just how much he could accomplish.

"You still haven't explained how," Simon told him, becoming more and more aggravated with how he was being ignored even though he was the only other person in the room.  Rather than respond, Noshi walked over to the door and locked it.  Even after Simon heard the lock click, Noshi did not move but leaned toward the doorknob.  Not being able to see or hear what he was doing, Simon only became more aggravated.

"Here, read this," Noshi said.  It seemed as though he had disappeared from where he had been and then reappeared in front of Simon.  "Just tap 'The Prophecy'," Noshi explained, helping Simon to realize that he was holding something.  Turning the ball-like object on, Simon tapped the button, silently wondering what Noshi was about to reveal to him now.

Children of the Blade: The Infantry BM's Forms

(by Winds of Time)

The Infantry Regiment are one of the most potent fighting forces in all of DM. fighting with blade, bludgeon, or hand they conquer the fields of battle with the support of the Cavalry and the archers. However there is more than meets the eye to the Infantry.

The blademasters of the infantry all practice some of the best loved techniques of the blade from the books in the Wheel of Time. with dangerous grace they perform their deadly dance with precision and the beauty unmatched by any other org. However what people don't realize is that the techniques they practice are extremely close to those reenactors practice in real life! Whether by coincidence or on purpose, one thing is for sure, the BM's of the band could quite possibly be potent fighters in real life if they have memorized the techniques that make up the sword style they use.

As a swordsman myself, i shiver to think what current blademasters Taymist, and Footman, could do in Real life with a blade. The mysterious connection of the forms and the real life swordsmanship definitively make the infantry, the most deadly org on DM. both in speech, and in truth.

The Tale of the Justly Stolen MG Brew

(by Paladin Uasal)

A tale of telling I will tell of the daring and dashing Paladin Uasal. Bound by his code of Chivalry, bound to come to the aid of his Banded Lady Stefania, he sets out through gale, hail, and stormy sail he quests for the secret stash of Corki's MG Brew.

Upon an isle he did find himself. Over run with mini versions of the Cruel tyrant MG Corki. Each one wore a mask and tiny spandex pants....Look more like the seven dwarfs than anything else. With determination and sheer skill he dispatches each mini Corki. As he continues into the depths of the island he can still hear them begging to be let down off the tree branches.

With death a possibility at every step Uasal takes care, eyes alert, sword at the ready. Suddenly he steps into a clearing that surrounded the opening of a massive cave. So vain and full of himself the evil Corki had carved the entrance to look like him. Grabbing a torch he enters the cave. The smell...oddly intoxicating, wafts through the cave. Side passages lead of in different directions, which one to take Paladin Uasal does not know. He trusts his faith to guide him. Lady Stefania ever in his mind gives him the courage to press on.

After the Light only knows how long, Uasal finds himself inside a huge cavern. Neatly stacked along the sides are cask upon cask of MG Brew stacked 5 high and 3 deep as far as he can see. As he searches the cavern he hears the mad laughter of the MG. Quietly he nears the sound and peeks around the edge of a cask. There upon a throne of bones and hide sits the tyrant himself. Bowing before him he recognizes other members of the Band. They have come to beg...BEG for his favor, beg for an MG Brew. Angered at such a sight Uasal jumps from behind the casks and shouts for everyone to get up.

"Good sirs and ladies! You should not have to beg like swine for what is rightfully yours. Your deeds and exploits merit such. For one such as you, my Banded Lady Stefania, does deserve this most sacred Brew. She has gained rank in the Band and as is custom should have received an MG Brew. But I see now that the tyrant you grovel before makes light and takes joy in the pleading and begging. NO MORE I say. For my Banded's honor I will TAKE what is hers and give her of it freely."

The tyrant Corki angered by Uasal's words calls for his guards, the Corrupt RA's, and charges them take Paladin Uasal. With a shout the brave Paladin charges. Left and right swords stab at him, seek to draw blood from his body, yet not a blade touches him. Suddenly a great sound is heard and one by one the Corrupt RA's are attacked from behind. The other Banders moved by Uasal's words join him in the battle. It is over before it began.

Knowing he is next MG Corki runs through a secret passage and escapes his just due. The crowd begins to raid the hoard of MG Brew but Paladin Uasal stops them. "Good sirs and ladies. Take only what you deserve, nothing more. For if you take all then what will be left for those that come after? It is the right and honorable thing to do." With looks of shame and understanding they replace what was taken. Paladin Uasal opens one cask and from it pours a mug for each one.

So Paladin Uasal departs with one mug of MG Brew for his Banded. Those that were there return with him, with a plan to make sure all are rewarded without having to go before the tyrant MG Corki again. But that is another tale to tell.

A Guide to Buying a Computer

(by el Nyn)

A lot of people have trouble buying a personal computer, they don't know what to look for nor how much they should spend for what they want. So here's a small guide to give those of you who fall into the above categories a little help.

What are you going to use your computer for?

This often dictates how much you're going to spend on a PC. Most people will want a mid-range PC that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and will just do what they want. Gaming PC's are often the most expensive, why? Because they have all the top of the range components to enhance your graphics and sound experience and a huge hard drive and tons of RAM (Random Access Memory) to cope with all that. If you walk into a shop, chances are the salesman will probably try to sell you one of these even if that's not what you want because he makes more money. This includes laptops as well. Dell XPS series is a gaming laptop series, while the Inspirons are for home use and Latitude series for business. In this instance, Google is your friend, do some research, find out what people are saying about the PC or laptop you are looking at buying.

Operating Systems

Commonly referred to as OS, these are Mac's, Linux and Windows. Linux is free to download and use but difficult to install and get to grips with if you don't know what you are doing. Mac's are the most reliable but more expensive, which is why most people go with Windows. The first recommendation I make to anyone is DO NOT buy Vista if you can help it! I have used it and it is a nightmare. Most of your programs will probably not work with it unless you buy the newest version (and you're spending more money), things aren't where you expect them to be and it takes twice the time to do anything with it. XP Pro is much better if you can get it.

Hard drive and RAM

Hard drive sizes have gotten a lot bigger in recent years, 60 or 80 Gb is fairly common nowadays. My current laptop has 120 Gb, also a common size. RAM is similar, the bigger it is, the more room you have on your computer to install programs. 256 MB is the most appropriate size you can get and computers often come with multiple sticks of these. Bottom line, the more RAM you can get for your money the better! Same with your hard drive.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

This is the bit that everyone thinks of as Intel or AMD. Pentiums are one of the best processors out there, but AMD are very good too. Dual core processors is a fairly recent technology and ensures that your machine runs better. Intel Centrino are also reliable. If the salesman is rambling on about processors tell him you want a Pentium Dual Core or Centrino Duo. You don't want the Celerons, they don't run as well and in my experience are less reliable.

Graphics and sound cards

This is one of the things that really makes a difference to the price tag. The best, top of the range cards will bump the price up. Nvidia GeForce series are one of the most reliable graphics cards you can buy, but beware, the higher the number of the model the better and more expensive it will be. Creative SoundBlaster sound cards are also top of the range. Research these on Google and see which one suits your needs best. Often you won't need the absolute top of the range one as those suit gamers' needs.

Software and security

Most pre-built computers come with a range of software and antivirus programs as standard. Pay attention to what these are and whether you'll use them. Computers including Microsft Office pushes the price up. If you must use Office try and get one with Office 2003 on it or buy it separately to the computer. Otherwise if you can get away without it, ask for a model without it. You can save money and use a program called OpenOffice, which is free to download off the internet and does everything that Microsoft Office does. Having a CD burning program is usually a good idea though, Roxio is a common program and will suit most people's needs. As for security, Norton and McAfee are not one's I'd recommend you buy. Ask for a model that does not include these. Symantec is ok, Sophos is best but more expensive. If you must save money, don't buy any anti-virus software that comes on the computer, but download a program called AVG Free. It is more reliable than some of those listed and the best bit, it's totally free! If you have problems with Spyware, also download Spybot Search & Destroy, also free.

A final word of advice, if you have a friend who knows his computer hardware and software stuff, ask him for advice! You'll thank yourself for it later. If he knows how to build a computer from components and knows where to look, you might consider asking him to build you a custom one, it may turn out to be cheaper than buying a ready built one! So now you have this little guide, hopefully you won't feel so confused when you go to buy a computer.

The Missing Piece

(by Paladin Uasal)

Who is the one that has my heart

It has flown from me like a dart

Into the sky and over the hills

Into another a space to fill

Where will I find it once more

Somewhere on some distant shore

Behind a shadow could it be

Calling come follow me

Where is my heart I cannot say

I can make another but out of clay

Useless until kindled by love

Strong and sure from the fire of love

This new heart is not the same

Kindled by a burning flame

I want my old heart scars and all

It's memories keep me from the fall

Calling out I can hear its voice

It has wandered of its own choice

At last I find it beating strong

In my loves hands soft and strong

I want to stay I cannot go

New wonders to me she wants to show

Just a while more and she will be mine

Always in her eyes I want to shine

I am sorry you cannot stay

Or soon my life will fade away

I do not know what will be

But you must needs come with me

Leave a part of you in her hand

She will keep it like none other can

Return to me and you will see

This is how it's meant to be

My heart you will one day go

Into the hands of one I love so

There you will rest in perfect peace

And she will replace your missing piece

Love

(by Sora Jea)

What is love?

A thought, a feeling, a song?

Love,

pain, grief or sorrow?

Joy, happiness and laughter?

What is love?

A simple word,

A complex definition,

Love surrounds all,

Love is everything and

Love always wins.

Truth

(by Sora Jea)

When in doubt,

A message still there lies.

The truth is not always seen,

but save it often can be.

Those words may come crashing down,

as a swift and terribly brutal sword,

and then they may come around,

making you wish you had stayed aground.

By then you'll see it all around,

the evidence of the truth.

No more lies,

No more games,

The truth has now been seen.

In the Shadows

(by Climhazzard)

I stand there

Hidden in the shadows

Watching the people pass me by

Without a second glance

Towards where I hide

I keep my head down

My eyes closed

Images flash before my eyes

Destruction, Peace, Hate, Love

Two realities, two different paths

Only the choices make the difference

Do I chose the light

Or the Dark

I look into the crowded streets

Searching for answers

Although I don't know the question

I open my eyes and peer through the shadows

And reach my out my hands to touch the light

To feel the living

While staying hidden in shadows

I am of both

Light and Dark

Destined to love

Even through the fierce rage I hold

And so here I stay

Between Darkness and Light

Living in the shadows

But protecting all.

An Irish Ghost Story

(by Dragonlover)

John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm.

The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming toward him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door.. only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of no where through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.

Shortly thereafter John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had.

A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying and....wasn't drunk.

Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other...

'Look Paddy.....there's that idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!!!!'

Clean Politicians

(by Arrandion)

A cannibal was walking through the jungle and came upon a restaurant opened by a fellow cannibal. Feeling somewhat hungry, he sat down and looked over the menu...

Broiled Missionary: $25.00

Fried Explorer: $35.00

Baked Politician: $100.00.

The cannibal called the waiter over and asked , "Why such a price difference for the politician?"

The cook replied "Have you ever tried to clean one of them?"

Bell Ringer

(by Arrandion)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame croaks so they need to find a new bell-ringer.

A guy with no arms comes along and says he can do it.

"But you've got no arms... you can't do this job!" says the church leader.

The new applicant shouts back - "Sure I can... I'll do it with my mouth!"

So the church hires him and he starts his bell-ringing duties the next day.

He begins ringing the bell using only his mouth, but the bell is so heavy, it tosses him out the window to the ground and splatters him dead.

He's lying dead on the ground and a big crowd gathers around him.

"Who is that guy?" one person says.

"I don't know says another, but his face sure rings a bell..."

A New Diet

(by Dragonlover)

Paddy weighs 20 stones, so his doctor puts him on a diet. "I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, eat for two days, skip a day and so on for two weeks, you should lose 5 pounds"

When Paddy returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost  4 stones.

"That's amazing!" said the doctor.... Paddy nodded...."I tell you by Jesus I thought I was gonna drop dead by the third day"

"What from hunger?" said the doctor

"No from all the skipping!!"

What Do You Do?

(by Dragonlover)

You're driving at a constant speed, on your left is a sheer drop, on your right is a fire engine, traveling at the same speed as you. In front is a galloping pig, the same size as your car and you can't overtake it. Behind you is a helicopter flying at ground level also traveling at the same speed.

What must you do to get yourself out of this highly dangerous situation?

Get off the kiddies merry go round you drunk idiot!!!

hornsounder_editorial_v2.jpg

What exactly IS the Hornsounder?

Hornsounder is the Band of the Red Hand's monthly Newspaper. It evolved from a newsletter into a newspaper in March 2007 when Mystica took over as Editor in Chief and started a full restructuring and re-organisation of what once was not much more than a points earning tool.

Today, Hornsounder is a full sized newspaper that is run by a whole team of people and covers not only news from the Band but also offers a space to all other groups on Dragonmount to share their news and events with the rest of the community. Although the main focus remains on the Band, of course, it is a nice extra forum for other groups to get in touch with those that have not yet been in touch with them as well as offers their members a certain amount of pride to see their beloved group represented in this newspaper. (we hope... )

Hornsounder is open to everyone on DM, regardless of which group they belong to or don't belong to. And this in both ways. Whether you just want to read, play the games or participate in the Competitions, everyone is welcome to join in. The same goes for being actively involved in the Hornsounder as a reporter. Everyone is welcome to participate, write articles, offer a project they would like to run or simply get involved by offering ideas and suggestions to increase the quality of your newspaper.

There are some restrictions where positions are concerned, given that Hornsounder IS the Band's newspaper and therefore Banders do get priority on certain aspects. But this does not exclude the possibility of involvement for Non-Banders who wish to be an active part of it.

Interested in getting involved? contact Mystica through pm and she'll get back to you asap after assessing your suggestion/idea.

How does the Hornsounder work?

Hornsounder, like every real newspaper, is divided into Sections and some of those have Subsections.

Sections are shown by their individual Graphic Headers.

Subsections are shown in BLUE

The Reporter Teams.

Each Section is run by a Section Senior Reporter who is the coordinator of the entire Section, including the subsections. It is their job to make sure all the elements are submitted at the deadline given and meets the required quality standards. Some Subsections are in themselves so big that they too have been assigned a Section Senior Reporter.

The different Sections and Subsections are made up of a series of articles that can be made/written by either the SSR's or by other writers: Junior Reporters. They write parts of the Section contents and work closely together with the SSR's. They get to be mentioned as the author of the articles they write/make, and in case of a Bander get the points that go along with it.

Next to the Section Reporters we also have Project Reporters.

Senior Project Reporters are those in charge of a large project that almost certainly requires the help of Junior Reporters.

Junior Project Reporters are those in charge of small or medium sized projects and may (or may not) need assistance from Junior Reporters.

Which projects are Senior or Junior level is decided by the Editor in Chief on a case-to-case basis.

The Editorial Team is made up by an Editor in Chief, a Senior Editor, a Graphic Editor and Junior Editors.

The Editor in Chief runs the whole newspaper. Creates and motivates the team, monitors progress and overlooks all Sections and everyone involved, gathers all the submissions and glues it all together into one coherent and appealing newspaper. The EiC also guards the quality of the newspaper, assesses new ideas/suggestions, implements new features and follows up on just about everything. The EiC has the final say on everything though should always strive to find the right balance between her team's ideas, the newspaper's needs and the readers' wishes.

The Senior Editor is the right hand of the EiC and picks up the reins in case the EiC is unable to perform the function. The SE is there to insure that the newspaper is published on time and with the set quality even if the EiC is indisposed.

The Graphic Editor is the left hand of the EiC and is in charge of all the graphical elements of the newspaper. From the Headers to the graphics in the articles, this is all the GE's domain. He/she is the one writers can turn to if they want to liven up their sections or articles with a graphical item.

The Junior Editor, are the assistants of the EiC and SE and tackle a variety of preperatory tasks on the editorial aspect of the Hornsounder. To become a JE one needs to be extremely active, willing and eager to work behind the scenes and be available for whatever the EiC and SE may need them for.

Hornsounder's Teams

Editorial Team

- Editor in Chief (EiC): Mystica

- Senior Editor (SE): Direwolf Jon

- Graphic Editor (GE): Son of Battles

- Junior Editors (JE): Bridmorgan, Stefania

How to be a part of the Hornsounder team.

If you would like to try your hand at being a reporter or you have an idea for a project, a game, a competition or you would like to participate in one of the Sections, then here's your chance!

Send a PM to Mystica with an outline of your idea or request.

She will assess it and give you an answer as soon as possible.

Note: Hornsounder claims the right to make any adjustments to your ideas that might be necessary to insure the quality and coherency of the newspaper
