Other Men's Horses : A Story of the Texas Rangers by Elmer Kelton
Texas Ranger Andy Pickard is assigned what appears to be a routine duty: find and arrest Donley Bannister, a West Texas horse trader who killed a thief named Cletus Slocum for stealing one of his horses. However, the Bannister case turns out to be anything but simple.
Pickard picks up Bannister's trail and finds him holed up with cohorts who wound the young Ranger and vow to kill him. Ironically, Bannister saves Pickard's life by fending off the would-be killers. When Andy is able to ride again, he locates Bannister's young wife, Geneva, hoping she will lead him to the wanted man.
The trail takes unexpected turns: Near Fort Concho, Andy's mission is interrupted by an ugly racial incident resulting in the death of a black soldier; Bannister is shot by outlaw Curly Tadlock and left for dead; and Tadlock brutally assaults Geneva.
Andy Pickard, newly married and unsure of his career choice as a Ranger, must unravel this tangled series of events to bring the accused killer to justice in Other Men's Horses, a gripping Western novel by acclaimed Texas author Elmer Kelton.
