  1. Ok :)

It means that you can't take the heat out of somewhere when a female chaneller. This is how Egwene burned her arm IIRC. But Rand can do it by transfering the heat. I think it is indeed a difference between male and female.

    here are the quotes

Rand’s face took on a pained expression. “I don’t know.” He sounded embarrassed. “When I want fire, for a lamp or a fireplace, I just make it, but I do not know how. I don’t really need to think to do things with fire.”

    That almost stood to reason. Of the Five Powers, Fire and Earth had been strongest in men in the Age of Legends, and Air and Water in women;

This time it was Elayne who pressed him. “Do you know how you extinguished them? You seemed to think before they went out.”

“That I do remember, because I don’t believe I have ever done it before. I took in the heat from the tables and spread it into the stone of the fireplace; a fireplace wouldn’t even notice that much heat.”

Elayne gasped, unconsciously cradling her left arm for a moment, and Egwene winced in sympathy. She remembered when that arm had been a mass of blisters because the Daughter-Heir had done what Rand had just described, and with just the lamp in her room. Sheriam had threatened to let the blisters heal by themselves; she had not done it, but she had threatened. It was one of the warnings novices were given; never draw heat in. A flame could be extinguished using Air or Water, but using Fire to pull the heat away meant disaster with a flame of any size. It was not a matter of strength, so Sheriam had said; heat once taken in could not be gotten rid of, not by the strongest woman ever to come out of the White Tower. Women had actually burst into flame themselves that way. Women had burst into flame. Egwene drew a ragged breath.

    “What’s the matter?” Rand asked.

“I think you just proved the difference to me.” She sighed.

“Oh. Does that mean you’re ready to give up?”

“No!” She tried to make her voice softer

  2. How can the gholam be destroyed?

The SteelyPips website had a lot of options:

    http://www.steelypips.org/wotfaq/1_dark/1.6_beasties/1.6.2_gholam.html

unfortunately that site hasn't been updated in a long time.

I assume it merged into one of these other Wheel of Time sites.

edit: looks like it was taken over by dragonmount.

I wish they would have kept all the great theories from SteelyPips.

this is my theory about the Gholam
every thing u ever wanted to know about the gholam but were afraid to ask!!!

There is a lot of people who think the Gholam is immune to the power . if we just look at what has been explained already we should realize that is both right and wrong! Let me explain.

    1. We know a lot about the power. And  that there is a male part and female.

    2. We know the 2 parts are different.

    3. We know that there are male and female Gholam.

    4. We know They were made to assassinate Aes Sedai. No other reason.

    5. We know they can sense the ability to channel.

    6. We know that a male gholam makes female flows disappear.

    7. We know Mats medallion makes female flows disappear.

    8. We know that the medallion hurts the Gholam.

    9. We know that things made to work for or against the male and female powers work  in  different ways.

    10. We know “Gholam were created in the middle of the War of the Power, during the Age of Legends”

So with this info we can extrapolate what about the gholam? Any question you can think of.

    1. Male gholam were made to kill female channelers

    2. Male gholam were made of and using Saidar, And that is why it cant hurt them

    3. Female  gholam were made to kill males.

    4. Female  gholam were made by and of Sadin. And that is why it cant hurt them.

    5. Also it is why a gholam “can sense the ability to channel, if they're within, say, fifty paces of you. They can feel the power in you, too”

Further clarification Both types are made of the power type they kill (like a walking Eye of the World or a flesh bag filled with sadar/sadin ) which tells us  that.

    1. no weapon can hurt them .

    2. why they are so fast.

    3. why they have no bones.

    4. Why they're strong enough to rip a door off steel hinges with one hand

This also confirms a other often debated question

    1. Mat’s medallion works against both types.

    2. Why  Mat’s medallion works on the gholam is that it is taking the flows and unraveling them (think of it like slow bailfire to the ghoalms skin.) or more simply poking small holes in a ziplock / flesh bag full of liquid sadar/sadin. It will take a lot of pokes or one big tear to get the sadar/sadin to drain out.

So now what these fact make me theorize is

    1. It drinks blood as a food to keep its energy

    2. The blood of an Aes Sedai is like a drug increasing his power in just about every way.

    3. gholams are blood junkys

    4. And that is why a bag of  sadar/sadin would kill people that can use it

  3. Is there anyway to find a list of characters in each book?

I'm trying to find a list of new characters in The Gathering Storm, characters we didn't see in earlier books.

is there an easy way to do that?

Wotmania had a similar function when it was around.  As far as I am aware, the function was not transferred to anywhere.

Closest current option might be the chapter summaries at various sites.

I've got it. Use Google to search for [First appeared TDR site:wot.wikia.com] (brackets mine, play with it a little to search for other books). Didn't think of it until now.

this site is new and not fully up to date yet but it might help http://www.wotdb.com/
  4. Another question, wildlife in TAR we were told was a no, right?  Or some?  We were told during a Wolf Dream segment I think.  I can't seem to recall this bit.

Au contraire, the Unseen World has its own wildlife. It's trained animals that don't appear there.

And one more, people say the Eye of the World wasn't used for its intended purpose, do we have a source to that?  Or is it something we've heard and heard and just took for fact?

I don't think anyone takes this for fact. It's just been suggested, and there isn't much in the way of evidence either way.

It comes from this quote in tEotW
but your right there is no evidence
  5. Firstly, Mat's seepage of memories and OT phrases from before TSR is explained by Moiraine as 'the old blood singing', i.e. it comes from his ancestors, not past lives.

Secondly, if we keep debating this, we should probably start a new thread. This one is for simple questions and answers.

And lastly, it doesn't really matter, but bobothebarbarian - why do you post several posts in a row, rather than using 'edit', or else preparing your posts in advance?

well yoniy0 there are a couple of reasons why the main one is Because the posts are about 2 different things.

One was about the Doorway, if it was a secret, and when it was used and who might of used it.

The other one was about how the Fins feed on emotions and experiences.

nether one had any thing to do with Mat's seepage of memories and OT phrases from before TSR. and I was not debating at all I was answering questions with direct quotes from the books and saying how I felt that quote explained the answer. The other reason I used the Quotes a lot in this thread and why I post several posts in a row is to keep it as simple as it could possibly be. with no way to confuse any one. But i guess it still did I am sorry

  6. I can't recall the timing of this "recollection" of Mat's. Was it after his memories implant?

    * Do the finn's collect by only bargaining? Or is there some more sinister method?

    the quotes
You were both in there. That is why . . . !” She made a vexed hiss. “One of you would have been bad enough, but two ta’veren at once — you might have torn the connection entirely and been trapped there. What do they get out of it? The snakes with legs. “Sensations,” Moiraine replied with a grimace. “Sensations, emotions, experiences. They rummage through them; you can feel them doing it, making your skin crawl. Perhaps they feed on them in some manner. always made me think that once you left the doorway it was like you then became a TV set to the fins for the rest of your life. but while you are actually there they actually get to feed of your thread like a moth eating your part in the fabric  ;D

As a side note do you think this part — you might have torn the connection entirely and been trapped there. Wretched boys playing with things you do not know the danger of.

is Ironic or just sad for Moiraine?

  7. from TSR Chapter 6 Doorways

“They ceased their collecting nearly three hundred years gone. It was just before they stopped completely that they acquired this ter’angreal. Up until then it was the possession of the Firsts of Mayene, who used its answers to help keep Mayene out of Tear’s grasp. And they allowed Aes Sedai to study it. In secret, of course; Mayene has never dared anger Tear too openly.”

“If it was so important to Mayene,” Nynaeve said suspiciously, “why is it here, in the Stone?”

“Because Firsts have made bad decisions as well as good in trying to keep Mayene free of Tear. Three hundred years ago the High Lords were planning to.....

so it was used up until 300 years ago but the part "And they allowed Aes Sedai to study it. In secret, of course; Mayene has never dared anger Tear too openly". Makes me think that the doorway was not a secret, just that they allowed Aes Sedai to study it was the secret.

So you never know maybe the Firsts would sell round trip tickets to Finn-landia ;D and who would want to buy a Ticket?

People that have to make life and death decisions, like solders. But I wonder why Mat doesn't have any memories of being a Aes Sedai researcher? I guess the male/female rules apply to the fins as well as the One power.

Additionally the Firsts of Mayene are descended from Hawkwing so we can assume that he had it when he was alive. If he did I am sure he would have let his generals and such use it.

  8. Ive made this argument before but I really doubt that Mat is Aemon reborn, or anyone like that for that matter. No one else remembers their memories except for Rand. Everyone is reborn, or close enough anyhow, and yet memories are not remembered. Rand is the exception, and he is the exception because it actually makes sense for him to remember. Mat on the other hand it doens't. Same goes with any other character. More likely Moiraine was simply correct (for a change): the Old Blood is strong in him. Egwene almost recognised what Mat said too.

    I agree completely!!!  ;D

;) accept about .. I do think he is the reborn version of some one that Thom has told stories about. Does that make sense? I don't have any Idea who And I am sure its not any king. but some one like Birgitte born humble and becomes a hero. and no I am not saying he is one of the heroes of the horn but he could be

  9. When mat gets healed from the dagger he has a flashback to Manetheren and he is commanding everyone. In this memory he is Aemon, a king, the king of Manetheren, i hope to see mat leading the two rivers boys instead of Perin, and they all do the Carai an Caldazar chant

Aemon was king and his queen was Aes Sedai and they were very much in love so I dont think he would say this
Mia ayende, Aes Sedai! Caballein mirain ye! Inde muagdhe Aes Sedai misain ye! Mia ayende!
    and that means

For a time,” she said finally, “I believe the past and the present were one. He was there, and he was here, and he knew who we were. He commanded us to release him.” She paused again.“ ’I am a free man, Aes Sedai. I am no Aes Sedai meat.’ That is what he said.”

in a the armies of Manetheren there was a commander for about every 80 to 100 solders just like in roman times I think that because when he first joins the armies he says

“What the Lord Dragon wants you to do,” he told them, “is to ride ahead slowly, just as if there wasn’t an Aiel inside a hundred miles. As soon as the pikes are through the gap, they’ll form a hollow square, and you get yourselves inside it double quick.”
The commander of the pikemen proved to be a pale, slender Cairhienin, half a head shorter than Mat and mounted on a gray gelding that looked past ready for the pasture. Daerid had hard eyes, though, an oft-broken nose, and three white scars crisscrossing his face, one of them not very old. He took off his bell-shaped helmet while he talked with Mat; the front of his head was shaved. No lord, he.

The Tairens are no friends of mine. And Daerid is . . . useful. Certainly not a friend.” Dry chuckles ran through the onlooking lords at the suggestion. “But I will lead one half, if you lead the other.”

Talmanes pulled off one steel-backed gauntlet and put out his hand, but for a moment Mat only stared at it. Lead? Him? I’m a gambler, not a soldier. A lover. Memories of battles long gone spun through his head, but he forced them down.

At the command orbem formate, the legionaries assumed a circle-like formation with the archers placed in the midst of and behind the legionaries providing missile fire support. This tactic was used mainly when a small number of legionaries had to hold a position and were surrounded by enemies.

At the command ciringite frontem, the legionaries held their position.

At the command frontem allargate, a scattered formation was adopted.

At the command testudinem formate, the legionaries assumed the testudo (tortoise) formation. This was slow moving but almost impenetrable to enemy fire, and thus very effective during sieges and/or when facing off against enemy archers. However in hand to hand fighting then the testudo was a weak formation and therefore it was only adopted when the enemy were far enough away so as the legionaries could get into another formation before being attacked.

how they organized the Roman army was Once the soldier had finished his training he was typically assigned to a legion, the basic mass fighting force. The legion was split into ten sub-units called cohorts, roughly comparable to a modern infantry battalion. The cohorts were further sub-divided into three maniples, which in turn were split into two centuries of about 60-100 men each. Total strength of a legion when fully staffed stood at around 60 centuries or 6,000 men. The first cohort in a legion was usually the strongest, with the fullest personnel complement and with the most skilled, experienced men. Several legions grouped together made up a distinctive field force or army

  10. nah i totally swear he mentioned a name to Lan and Lan said it was some king from during the Trolloc wars or something

I am almost sure in all off mat memories he was never a king but there is one where he sees a enemy king on the field and thinks to him self that he had a memory of serving that king also as the memory person he was was shot with arrows. and that memory person was from the band of the red hand something about holding them off for days then they left and mat thinks i wouldn't count on the mercy of your enemy
  11.

Just after he got his memories back he asked someone, i think Lan about people he had been in the past, and i think it was mat who said he had been known as the gambler, not 100% sure tho.

I would really like to know what you're referring to. I have no recollection of us ever learning who Mat was in past lives. We do know that he's currently known for being somewhat of a gambler (and I don't mean by his friends. That's a given). We have an example of that when the Aelfinn call him Gambler.

Check through The Shadow Rising after Mat and Rand get back from Rhuidian, altho the gambler part might have just been i myself affixed to him however, last time i read it was too far ago, it's all a bit hazy but i definately remember mention of past lives.

its book 5 Fires of Heaven Chapter 42 Before the Arrow that i think your talking about they just talk about the battle plans against the shadio. the last morning mat was a free man and not a General. a few things in this chapter say a lot about Mat the best parts are
He himself had never noticed anything twisting around him except the fall of dice. He would not turn away from some of the things that happened to ta’veren in stories. Wealth and fame dropped into their pockets as if from the sky; men who wanted to kill them decided to follow instead, and women with ice in their eyes decided to melt.

and i think this 1 answers your question

Know the terrain. That was the second rule, close behind “Know your enemy,” and not much to choose between them.

The thought put a sour twist to his mouth. Those rules came from other men’s memories; the only rules remember were “Never kiss a girl whose brothers have knife scars” and “Never gamble without knowing a back way out.” He almost wished those memories of other men were still separate lumps in his brain instead of oozing into his thoughts when he least expected.

he thinks this but dose not say it to Lan
It was like Cuaindaigh Fords, too, late in the Trolloc Wars, and on much the same scale. Not much different from the Tora Shan, either. Or Sulmein Gap, before Hawkwing found his stride. The names flickered through his head, the images of bloody fields forgotten even by historians. Absorbed in the map as he was, they did not register as anything but his own remembrances
and that gives us a time line and
He more than merely liked gambling, and battle was a gamble to make dicing in taverns a thing for children and toothless invalids. Lives were the stake here
is the reason  I think of him as a real gambler.

With that it all crashed home, what he had been saying, the memories he had been embracing. Burn you for a fool, for not guarding your tongue! Why had Lan had to take the conversation that way? Why could he not have talked about horses, or the weather, or just kept his mouth shut? The Warder had never seemed all that eager to talk before. Usually the man made a tree seem talkative

and finely that's why i am pretty sure it was this chapter you were talking about. It is one of my favorite chapters of all the book, but then again almost all the mat chapters are.
  12. Wow bobo, I was hitting post to reference that same quote when it said there was a new reply...

    Found Here

the quote is here from The Gathering Storm Book Tour, Scottsdale Public Library, Phoenix Arizona 16 November 2009 - kcf reporting

did I mention I live in Scottsdale and I was at the Public Library on the 16 November 2009

It was also mentioned that balefire does not mean that someone can’t be reborn into the Pattern. I was very surprised by this and hadn’t heard it before, but apparently Brandon has said it in previous Q&A sessions. Brandon said he was also surprised but that Maria was very insistent about this – so if the Dragon Reborn was balefired, he could still be reborn.

I just have to LOL and wonder cause I was actually there that night in Scottsdale AZ and don't recall that being the same answer. but I will concede I could be wrong

  13. I'm confused on Balefire and the dream world.

I seem to recall that balefire burns out your thread and you're done. Truly finished forever.

However, I think I remember Brandon said that balefire keeps the Dark One from being able to resurrect you, but your soul will be reborn eventually.

So is balefire really not the end of all things for a person?

someone that is bale-fired will not be reborn

If Rand were Balefired, would he be spun back out when the world needed him?

Would he be able to channel like he does in every life, or would he be done forever, and a new Dragon would replace him?

    i would guess

The wolves say if they are killed in the wolf Dream, then they are killed forever.

Is that how it works with humans too? Is dying in T'A'R more finite then balefire?

    Could the wolves be wrong?

T'A'R is heaven for the the wolves there soul is there when they are dead if your soul is killed you cant be reborn

If a Forsaken has an evil soul, will that soul still be evil and likely to join the darkside if they are balefired and reborn?
you can't be balefired and reborn but you can die then be reborn if that happened to a forsaken i think  he would start with a clean slate as long as they were actually reborn not trans...ified

Do souls ever change forms? Like can a wolf that died naturally be reborn as a human in its next life, or a darkfriend come back as a toad?

no as far as we know a soul is constant unless the DO meddles like putting a mans soul in a female body

:P cant you just see lanfear brought back in the body of a rat a cute little rat in white silk clothes and silver jewels :o ;D

  14. How is it that Rand can get a faint sense of when a female channels near him?

Why do fish swim, and birds fly? That's just the way the WoTverse works.

No, I mean I was reading a quote where the forsaken are having a meeting in tFoH, Rahvin guesses that Graendel and Lanfear are holding the power. Shouldn't he be sure of it if every man could do what Rand can?

Rahvin could have told if one was if they were not hiding it with inversion
  15. 1. they are only at the mercy of someone if a. that person is also a dreamwalker or b. that person has a strong emotional connection to them such as Gawyn/Egwene.

    2. only masters of TAR can pull some one into TAR, and only if they have some sort of connection to them, such as Ishy and darkfriends.

    3. i doubt it happened, only apprentices of dreamwalkers could be pulled in, and i dont see that happening much.

    4. i reckon you don't actually lose a part of yourself when going to TAR in the flesh, Egwene didn't lose a part of herself, and Rand didn't, not because of TAR anyway...

Mostly true, but why do you reckon it's only possible to pull someone you have a connection with into tel'aran'rhiod? I don't see any evidence for that.

BTW bobothebarbarian, the man Ishamael killed was there in the dream, not flesh. It's certainly possible to die that way in TAR.

yes i know he was dreaming but i believe Ishamael was there in the flesh to be able to pull a dreaming person in to T'A'R
  16. i had always thought it was just a story made up to keep people from doing it but now that i think about it here is what i come up with

    1. the dramwalkers can talk to some one in there dream but are at the mercy of that person

    2. in 1 book (i forget what book)Moridin brings a few darkfriends in to T'A'R and kills 1 as an example

so from those diferent ways of talking to some one in T'A'R i wold assume that to bring some one in to T'A'R to kill them you would have to be there in the flesh and that made me think about

    3. it would take a twisted person to do that and i would assume that in the AoL that kind of thing was done often

    4. most likely rumors started then that to go to T'A'R in the flesh makes you lose a part of yourself or become a little crazy or maybe even makes you become a darkfriend

but then i thought about when Moridin and lanfear tried to get the boys to drink the wine what was that about? maybe it was like taking the blue pill or the red pill, a way to track them

  17. What I found particularly interesting is that Ishamael died in T'A'R but it didn't amount to permanent death. It doesn't prove anything because the DO was involved, and we were never sure humans die permanently in T'A'R like wolves do, but it's still interesting.

when wolves are in T'A'R it is just the soul so for them to die in T'A'R the soul is killed. when Ishamael died in T'A'R he had traveled there in the flesh

  18. wow very interesting topic. lot's of theories and discussion on the nature of the power, and aes sedai intentions and well, over 100 pages of good stuff that brings back the series, thank you all for a really great read.

i have a few questions, they really are simple and probably more on the practical side of things but they've been nagging me for years

1- what is a spit dog? is it like a hamster wheel with a bit of food dangling like a carrot that keeps a dog running? dogs are usually smarter than this right? (i'm pretty sure there is at least 1 spit dog per book starting with book 4 or 6 and i always wondered what they were)

just like a sheep dog is a working animal so is a spit dog. yes it is it like a hamster wheel its job is to walk in it

2- how can one divide a dress for riding? i've tried looking this up on google once and there were links to renaissance costumes sites but no good picture. is the dress basically split? or is it really wide?

take a dress cut a line down center sew in to legs. when standing the legs come together so you cant really tell but you would need to sit side saddle with out it divided or you might show your calf to a boy!! :o

8- and these in regards to musical instruments (probably could of just googled these but hey might as well add them to this great thread!) what is a hammered dulcimer and do i remember right reading the term bittern as a musical instrument?

to see what a hammered dulcimer looks like go to http://www.masterworksok.com

i think you mean a cittern # Cittern  - small flat backed wire-strung plucked instrument; played with a plectrum; popular from renaissance to baroque times. Modern citterns are much bigger, and more like mandolins in shape. Usually with 10 strings in 5 courses. Related to Portuguese Guitarra.

  19. Ok, I have one; How does a Forsaken or whomever actually go about "Getting permission" to channel the TP? Is it some internal dialogue they have with the DO in their head which gives them instant permission. Or do they have to travel to SG and ask in person or what? How long of a process is it? Do we even have a clue on any of that?

LOL I just had a mental image of the forsaken in a DMV like line and the DO behind the counter saying ill need 2 forms of ID and these forms filled out in triplicate
