I think that Mat might be a character that Sanderson has a difficult time writing. It was one of the characters that Jordan was closest to from what I know. It would be difficult to capture the exact tone that Jordan used. I think he's done a fine job, though. Yes, Mat seems a little off, but that is to be expected. And, all in all, he's not written badly. He just seems a little "uncomfortable".

Perhaps some of Rand's not wanting to kill women also stem from his memories from Lews Therin. Lews killed his wife and all his children when he went insane. Ishy brought him back from insanity just so he could see and understand what he had done. While I have no doubt that not hurting women is ingrained in the Two Rivers way of life, I can't help but thinkt hat some of his reluctance, downright recalcitrance, in killing women stems from the crazy dude hanging out in his skull, screaming hysterically about his dead wife....I would think that would have some sort of impact on Rand's psyche.
