  1. Anyhooo

    Some of my favorite Nynaeves:

This lovely, almost Japanese-minimal version by fee-absinthe. Here's another sylized one. They are both so pretty.

I love the costume and flow of this dynamic Nynaeve by Ellyka.

The wonderfully named PurpleFriiday (sic) seems to have a thing for Wot Costume, and provides this fun version of Nynaeve. I just wish her scans were of better quality. Here;s another with a formally attired Nynaeve.

and I think that Rich Boye totally nailed it with this formal gown, and Nynaeve all gussied up for an audience with Tylin in this picture. He even remembered that she put "yellow opal" broaches in her braid!

  2. Er. "Ieatbabies," you do realize that this is 'Fan Art' so these are the impressions of WoT fans, not officially commissioned art by RJ? I would hazard a guess that almost all of this fan artwork was done by people who are not professionals or even fully trained artists.

I for one, love the myriad ways that RJ has touched fans around the world to express their creativity.

  3. whoops - hit 'submit' by accident:

I also still adore this one of Perrin, Faile and Loial, which is also very roughly done, but I just really like the build on Perrin, Faile's unthematic split skirt and the scale of Loial  (Rich Boye's old versions)

Here's another of my favorites from Hamilton Cline's ellfwood page - a very savage and feral Perrin.

And no survey of Perrin fan-art would be complete without Helena Zeegers iconic "So, Perrin - rumour has it you can talk to wolves?"

  4. o hai!

II feel remiss, because I haven't been able to chime in with my own personal selections, but I was really, really busy (I just moved).

For some reason, pictures of Perrin Aybara don't engender all that much interest for me because I don't think anyone gets him close to how *I* see him.

    Here are a few, however:

Hamilton Cline's"Perrin Posing" in black and white.

Although it's very Comic-booky, I still cleave this version of all three taveren to my heart, becauuse they all look so very badass.

I also still adore this one of Perrin, Faile and Loial, which is also very roughly done, but I just really like the build on Perrin, Faile's unthematic split skirt and teh scale of Loia ;) (Rich Boye's old versions)

  5. A good deal of Helena's stuff is still around on this site (her original site was on geocities [xoom?] and went the way of the betamax, sadly). She has an elfwood page, but's light on her wonder WOT creations.

I know that there was awesome picture of fan-created Seanchan nobles drawn by Rich Boye that Helena painted in her watercolors that was mindblowing, but I can find no trace... damn. The Internet can be so ephemeral.

  6. Ah, the Aiel!

I've always been pleased by Rich Boye's Sevanna, which shows her in her algode blouse and heavy skirt, but still tacky and gaudy and over-jeweled (and unlaced!), as contrasted with the same style outfit (but not as tawdry) of Amys and Lian (I can't find a larger picture of that, but i know that the thumbnail on the page used to lead to a larger picture. Indeed, I always that the intricate yin/yang (saidar/saidin)style-border on Lian's skirt was lovely, and all three seem to have been the starting off point for this lovely watercolor of an Aiel Wise One at the side of a Saldaean Queen (both appear be fan-creations, though), done by Archie-the-RedCat.

Illiena's drawing of a Wise One always struck as me a realistic version of what they might wear (aside from the lack of sleeves - sunburn!)

Over towards the Maidens of the Spear, I also really like the face and coloring of his Aviendha, even if I take issue with his caidin'sor. Here's a pair of ferocious Maidens, Bain and Chiad in a lovely painting that really conveys the veil-ness of their veils, even if the artist Stuuuu forgot that Maidens have buzzcuts with narrow braided tails. But they look so badass! Here's a less badass and more adorable (can something be adorably badass?) version of the same two characters, Bain and Chiad by RoseMuse.

And of course, no survey of Aiel-themed fanart would be complete without Mark Bray's Gaul and Chiad.

  7. I've always treasured the Japanese covers - my absolute favorite is this beautiful one of Egwene sleeping. (it's hard to link to the exact picture, but it's number two).

I also love these in (no particular order)

    - I've always assumed this was Siuan (No. 7), although it could be Alviarin.

    - this dazzling Lanfear (No. 2)

    - Egwene and Elayne meeting Min (No. 3)

    - Another spectacular Lanfear (No. 1)

    - A glorious Morgase on her throne wearing a beautiful gown/kimonos thingy (No. 3) - the hair is a tad '60s Mod, but it's just so lovely.

    - an awesome Birgitte with braid and bow (No. 5)

    - Nynaeve in disguise as red-haired Nana on the receiving of Valan Luca's attentions. (No. 7)

    - a sad valedictory for Moiraine(this corresponds to the portion of the book where she "dies") (No. 8)

    - Morgase all tarted up for Gaebril (No. 2)

    - Alanna bonding Rand(wearing a lather bustier, it seems :) (No. 3)

    - a beautiful Egwene in Aielwoman clothing (No. 5)

    - a magnificent Cadsuane that doesn't make her hair-thingy look atrocious. (No. 4)

    - an imposing duo: Elaida and Alviarin in striking gowns(No. 6) - this one always rather reminded me of this one of the same two characters by Rich Boye

    -

  8. ummm, that was weird - it posted without me being done.

Here's long been a favorite of mine: Katherine Catlin's "Rand al'Thor" depicting him young and naive, I think. (here's her elfwood page).

Indeed, I like to view that version in conjunction with Rich Boye's iconic) too me - "Rand as Dragon Reborn" which is for some reason not on his deviantart page, but is still available on Encyclopedia WOT. I like how they are both wearing red coats, but the second Rand now has him triked out with his insignia of power - the Laurel Crown and his Dragon Scepter. Those little details that I think Richard always did a great job on. It appears to be a little on the older side, I think - the anatomy is still a little crude.

And just because I am a huge dork, I am amused by this idea of the WoT Characters as comic book styled superheroes - with Rand as a Superman analog "Dragonlord"

  9. Sylathis,

Well, maybe - when we first meet the Seanchan in tGH, they definitely have a distinct Asian style: they wear long kimono or cheongson-type robes, and they lacquer their nails and armor, but then again, one of the first Seanchan figures we meet is blond, who has his hair shaved and braided one side (Huan, sho'jin to Turak), and that is a very Egyptian style. Just like Selucia up there. The pleated linen garments are very, very Egyptian.

As we see more and more Seanchan, some of them are 'black' or 'negroid' like Tuon and the imperial family. Heck, that's how Semirhage could just blend in, and she's definitely not 'Caucasian.' Selucia's former Truthspeaker was named 'Neferi' and if that's not an Egyptian homage, I don't know what is. The Empress' name Rhadhannan is also very Egyptian seeming, no?

Here's a nice summary from the WoTFAQ:

Seanchan: Imperial China, Imperial Japan, Persian Empire, Ottoman and Byzantine Empire. (RJ); The lacquer work of the Seanchan seems to be inspired by the Far East, the Emperor/Empress that is too magnificent for commoners to gaze upon is a concept borrowed from Japan. The phrase "Ever Victorious Army" was actually in use in Japan during one point of its history. Persian Empire: The Crystal Throne that inspires awe is a direct allusion to a Persian epic story. Ancient Egypt: pleated linen clothing, the tonsured heads, the patterns on Suroth's gown (symbols within cartouche-like ovals) which could be visualized as resembling hieroglyphics. WH provides even more cultural flavorings, including Greek names (Tuon's middle name is "Kore" [an ancient name for the Greek Goddess Persephone] and Selucia [selucid Kingdom]), and Egyptian names (Neferi [Nefertiti]).
  10. Jemron has a great point! Although DKS was often horrendously wrong, we all tend to use his version(s) of Mat as the 'canonical' version. Huh.

Sam Weber's Mat should be the archetypal Mat! It's so awesome.

As before, I have some favorites.

RoseMuse's 'Stages of Mat' and 'this standalone portrait' are swell. She had some delightful character study pieces on each of the characters, but sadly, they have been removed(?) (Here is google image's chached thumbnail). This action piece of 'the three ta'veren' makes me swoon.

I know that Richard Boye had a rather posh looking Mat in a grey silk coat with blue detailing, but it seems to not be present on his deviant-art page. I do like his comic-booky drawing of the three ta'veren looking really badass(but like comic book characters - I think it's one of his oldest, because it's very rough) . I do always wonder why most people always put Mat in a green coat, though? Is that another example of the fan-artists taking their cues (even unconsciously) from Darryl Sweet?

Por ejemplo, I like this Mat by Sk3tchit.

Hamilton Kline has a Mat that I like, even if he's vaguely hipster-ish with a small goatee.

  11. First of all, thank you so much Jennifer for doing this! It's such a great idea.

There does seem to be a dearth of good Seanchan art on the web, even though they are so interesting visually and sartorially.

Here are a few more of my favorites:

I see you've discovered RoseMuse, but here's a wonderful piece by her which shows Tuon, Selucia and a gaggle of Seanchan that also runs with the Egyptian flair.

This is a really funky picturethat has a really interesting take on the weird insectoid/samurai armor of the Seanchan by someone calling himself Prometheus.

Here's another version of Seanchan armor by Tumnus-d-faun.

and here are some cool pictures ot Tuon, all also carrying the Egyptian idea forward: Esrial's Tuon and Tiyger's Tuon.

There is also a very talented (and prolofic WoT artist on deviantart.com who calls herself Gala-maia, and she has a very visually intriguing picture of a sul'dam and damane and assorted Seanchan beasties.

And as I am sure you know, Richard Boye has an entire gallery of Seanchan pictures. I always loved his High Lady Suroth and that very pretty kimono-robe thing she's wearing.
