  1. Loraine smiled as she twisting together an easy weave of Air until she had a little rope of it that was about 3 feet long. "Now, here's one I used a lot when I was an Accepted. It becomes very useful, in fact, I still use a variation of this one on my door. There are a lot of different things you can do with this one, depending on your purpose. My goal is to teach you the basic Ward here." Salandrian appreciated Loraine's openness with her students. Despite her ageless face and the Great Serpent ring, the Aes Sedai haughtiness had not touched her.

Loraine grinned as she added Spirit. "Besides, I'm sure you'll be experimenting with this one later, too." Salandrian couldn't help but grin back at her. She looked around, and when she saw that no one else had smiled, she quickly covered her mouth. She didn't want the other girls to think her a teacher's pet. Deep down, she knew she needed to only please herself, but satisfying the teacher was easier sometimes.

"The purpose of this Ward is to give me a signal when someone crosses it. I used it mainly to line doorways, to let me know when someone is in my room without my permission." She smiled, slowly threading the Spirit through the weave in a simple in and out pattern. "There you are. Now, it's your turn! Let me know if you need my help!"

Air had never been Salandrian's strongest element, so she modified the weave. She made the rope of Air shorter, but threaded more Spirit through to compensate. A small bang! and a puff of smoke sent Salandrian jumping back. No one was hurt, and nothing more appeared. But Loraine Sedai came to her side. "Aes Sedai, can you help me figure this out?" She explained to the Green what she'd done, then frowned.

  2. After being rained on, having her hands pricked bloody by thorns and running to class, spending more than an hour with novices was the last thing Salandrian would have thought would calm her down. But repeating the rosebud exercise was calming to her, even while the novices struggled with it. And it gave her an excuse to hold saidar, which she relished. As the hour went on, the novices continued to improve, little by little. It was hard to track their minute progress, yet at the end of the hour some who could barely hold the Power were now, if not proficient, able to do so.

After the hour had passed, Saline taught them how to push which gave Salandrian time to sit. Only for a bit, because soon she was helping Saline make sure they understood pushing, and were actively practicing it. By the end of class when Saline dismissed them, no one was approaching proficient, but some grasped the basic practice. Salandrian had done her best.

As the students filed out, Salandrian awkwardly stood around, waiting for Saline's dismissal. Instead she smiled and said directly: “I wanted to teach you a new weave. Observe.”

Salandrian watched as Saline embraced saidar and quickly wove all five elements. Spirit was predominant but with a tinge of Earth as well. She set the weave over the basket of roses. "It is called Keeping. Now these roses will not wilt or rot for a long time." Salandrian nodded. Nothing had changed about the roses, yet the Power could be deceiving.

“Your assignment is to find out different ways the Keeping can be used. If you need to find me for any reason I’ll be in the shed. Be ready with the research in one week’s time. You may go.”

Salandrian thanked Saline, though she couldn’t help but show the confusion on her face. The weave was intricate but there was a pattern to it. And the fact that it highlighted her two strongest elements would make it easier to practice. She wondered what she could Keep? Flowers obviously, though they'd have to be cut off from the plant. Logically that meant that any piece of a plant, vegetable or fruit should be able to be preserved with the weaving. Could it be applied to meats then as well? Salandrian might have to conduct some smelly experiments. Her neighbors would not be pleased.

  3. Refreshing indeed! Salandrian stood up, rather abruptly and decided it was time for some real tea. "Loraine Sedai, let me get you another cup of tea." She stood up, looked Regalia square in the face, gave the child her best attempt at a smile, then went to the table with the tea and such. A chamomile tea might calm her down a bit. Yes, that was exactly what she needed. And for Loraine Sedai, a jasmine tea. Refreshing yes, but with a bit of bitterness as well. She noticed that Rasheta Sedai had been quite. After handing Loraine's tea to her, she left her in the company of the two novices.

"Rasheta Sedai, I have noticed you've kept quiet. May I be so bold as to ask you what brought you under the banner of the Green Ajah?"

  4. Ciprian Isandes Neramovni groaned as he rolled out of bed. His body was constantly aching and he just needed a break from this addiction to this excruciating, yet exhilarating saidin. But he couldn't return to Far Madding after what had happened, and the Black Tower was the only place he felt he could be himself. And there was the perk of being surrounded by beautiful, muscled men.

After splashing water on his face to wake himself up, Ciprian rushed down the stairs and into the mess hall to break his fast. Hearing the cocks crowing and the chickens gawking, the cows mooing and children crying, he went to the Training Yards to find somewhere quite, somewhere he could meditate before he started his day. Just when he began to quiet his mind, just his luck, a group of Dedicated began their training. He scowled and shook his head, but walked to the kitchens anyway. He was hungry enough.

As he approached, he saw a cluster of people around the kitchens. Even without saidin, he could smell a wonderful meat stew being cooked. His stomach grumbled. Avoiding the crowd altogether, he went to the back entrance of the building and made his way into the kitchen, where he saw an Asha'man judging from the pins on his collar, and an young student he thought he recognized, talking.

"Tell me what your experiences are in terms of cooking. What are your preferences, your likes and dislikes? What do you know and what do you want to know? And we’ll continue from there.”

"Sir, sorry to interrupt, but what can I do for a bowl of that?"

  5. "What brought you to the Tower? Aside from the obvious talent, of course..." Salandrian couldn't help but blush at that. She forgot all about the horrible tea and the novices' pranks. She had never had an Aes Sedai complement her so directly before. She wondered if Loraine Sedai meant it earnestly, or was simply trying to lure her into some complicated Aes Sedai plot. Did she mean that Salandrian had potential? Or was simply one of the few girls who could channel? She knew she was fairly weak by Tower Standards, but she felt that she was accomplished with what she could use.

"Loraine Sedai, you're flattering me." Salandrian said with a twinkle in her eye. "I chose to come to the Tower to study the world, the way it works, why rulers act the way they do. I felt that getting away from Ebou Dar was the only way I could do that. My family had a high respect for Aes Sedai, and when Yalara Sedai told them I had the potential, they encouraged me to go. At the time it seemed like a life-changing choice, and it was, but I look back and can't imagine doing anything else."

  6. "Ay!" Salandrian jumped back as she pricked her thumb for the umpteenth time on the roses she had cut for Saline Sedai. She had stained her white Accepted dress with blood, but that could come out with a little Air and Water. And a Yellow or any Aes Sedai with a tad of skill in Healing could soothe her hands. No, what really was bothering her was the rain and her soaking shift. It had been raining for almost three days, with the intensity ebbing and flowing. Salandrian had chosen to wait until the last minute to go outside to cut the rosebuds and as if to spite her for her procrastination, it began down-pouring when she stepped out into the gardens.

And she was late to meet Saline she realized when she heard the bells toll High. No time to dry herself. When she stepped back into the Red Quarters many Reds looked as her as if she were a wild forest girl. Trying to pay them no mind, she glided out the Red Quarters and through the Tower as gracefully as she could, alternating between running when no one was around, and walking when novices or Aes Sedai passed her.

At last she arrived in the classroom before the novices. Saline was there, and when Salandrian entered, the Red gave her the once over. "Saline Sedai, forgive my appearance, or lack-thereof. It began raining as soon as I went out to cut the roses. Here they are on the table." She set them down, then embraced saidar and began to dry herself off. A quarter of an hour later, her shift was damp, but clean, and she looked as if she had merely taken a bath, not run through a rainstorm.

When the novices arrived, she took charge of those who seemed to understand better than the rest how to embrace the Source. Despite her initial misgivings about this bunch, some had greatly improved their ability in only a fortnight. That didn't mean she liked them. For the most part, they were still a nasty bunch of novices. But they were growing on her.

  7. Salandrian watched the novices faces grow terrified as Saline lectured them on the dangers of saidar. Even after years of using it, albeit infrequently, she had become less afraid of touching it, but the lure of it was always there. Even now, the ultimate pleasure she felt from it teased the back of her mind. It called to her, however quietly, but she resisted. Some called it 'sweetness' yet to Salandrian it was more wondrous than sweet- it was pure exhilaration. She had never felt so alive as when using the One Power.

It surprised her when she felt it in the room. She looked up at Saline Sedai and saw that she was only entertaining the students. She couldn't help but smile to herself when she saw the looks on the novices faces as the purple flames danced in her hands. For some of them who before coming to the tower had no clue what Aes Sedai really did, she could image that they would be surprised, even frightened. Yet being Aes Sedai was much more than using the Power, Salandrian had learned. What exactly else it required, she was still learning.

As the lesson came to a close, the novices filed into a line and stood to receive the name they were assigned to. "I will be available to help you immediately following this class," she told the girls in their line. "Wait outside the classroom, and we will go to the Library together. I will be available to answer questions then and there." As the novices filed through, she gave them the names of Aes Sedai who had burned themselves out, though they didn't know that yet. After the good part of a quarter-hour, saying, repeating and spelling names, a group of ten or so novices remained to follow her to the Library.

"Follow me. Do not fall behind."

The towers of books loomed ahead as Salandrian stood underneath the doors of the library watching the somewhat familiar novices enter. "I can assist you in finding books that will have these sisters...ahem!" She corrected herself "...these women's stories'. Or you can ask the Aes Sedai who work in this Depository."

  8. "I'm sure you're aware that the world outside the Tower grounds can sometimes be less than friendly for Aes Sedai. My goal in this class is to teach you a few weaves that will protect you or buy you time to get away from an attacker or an uncomfortable situation before it's too late."

Salandrian liked Loraine Sedai's frankness. It was such a welcome change from the scheming, politicking, conniving that the other Aes Sedai excelled at. She knew that it allowed the Tower to wield the power it had, but it was slightly disturbing to her. Maybe the Greens kept their sensibility because they acted, not plotted. Maybe Green was right for her. She certainly wouldn't fear Myrddraal then!

As closely as she watched Loraine Sedai's weave, it was difficult for her to copy it. She embraced saidar and used Air to begin weaving. The shield pattern was intricate, but it repeated itself. Come on, bloody shield! Using the hand motions, she tried to copy the other Accepted. One girl, a tall Saldaean, finished her weave and bobbed up and down like a novice. Insistent that she would not be discouraged, Salandrian worked faster, though that caused her to loose the weave all-together. She took a deep breath and began again.

She started again with Air and at first felt that it was almost falling into place. She looked up for a brief second to make sure no one else had finished, and saw Loraine Sedai standing in front of her, watching. The Aes Sedai's watchful eyes made her nervous, and she sped up. If I can't get this simple weave, I won't stand a chance. Get it silly girl! Salandrian dropped the weave for a second time and scowled at herself. She shook her head and again embraced the Source. Speed certainly wasn't helping.

For a third time, she began the weave. It felt more comfortable, more familiar to her now. Loraine Sedai was helping another Accepted now. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Feeling Air as she pushed and pulled, threaded and prodded it into place. Slowly but surely her shield was taking shape. Anticipation grew in her stomach as she nearly finished. Using Spirit to shoot through the shield, she finished it and tied her weave off. She could not help but beam as she admired her handiwork.

  9. “Accepted Saladdressing. Please accept my humble tea.” Regalia curtsied and looked at Salandrian as she raised the cup to her lips. She smelled it and felt her stomach was about to empty over her dress. She bit her tongue and forced herself to appear to sip the very milky tea. She certainly did not let the horribly-made tea into her mouth. She looked up and smiled at the novice. "Wonderful. You know me well, Regalia."

Another novice entered and greeted the two Aes Sedai and Salandrian as well. Salandrian winked at Regalia then turned to the new, giggling novice. "Child, you simply must try this. Regalia, make the novice a cup of your tea. And be sure to follow your recipe to the 't'. Simply fantastic!" She took another fake sip and smacked her lips.

She turned to the Green sisters and decided to be blunt. "Loraine Sedai, I am grateful that you've asked me here to tea. You must forgive me for being blunt, but what made you decide to choose the Green Ajah?"

  10. Salandrian wished that she knew the Aes Sedai trick for not sweating. It definitely was not a weave, for she felt no Power being used, nor could she see the weaves around the sisters. Was it perhaps something to do with being Raised? Or would she have to discover it for herself? Perhaps they taught a class on it. Light, how much more was there to learn! Worrying about it made her sweat even more. And she was late for the Green Tea Party. As if being around Aes Sedai would make her less nervous. Light grant that they left their Warders in their proper quarters.

Switching back and forth between gliding like an Aes Sedai when there were some around, and running like a novice when she was alone, Salandrian managed to arrive before everyone else in the gardens. Do the Greens want to meet with me alone? She imagined being surrounded by a circle of Green sister and their Warders pressuring her to commit to the Battle Ajah.

Except for Frantelle, that dreamy-eyed novice she had taught.  Just when she thought she was liked by a particular sister, a novice threw a stitch in her plans. Her prospects of being Raised soon seemed slim to none right now. She was determined to make this novice suffer. What punishment could she give to make Frantelle fear her? Her mind began to tick.

"Good day, Aes Sedai." Salandrian curtsied the appropriate amount for an Accepted to a sister. "The garden is looking lovely, Loraine Sedai." She turned and nodded at Regalia. "Oh dear Regalia! How good it is to see you again! Be a dear and fetch me a cup of my favorite tea, won't you?" She would make the novice work.
