  1. OOC: So sorry this took so long. Internet problems and all that.  Here we go, finally. :)

    IC:

Jaedlyn took in the room before her.  It was simple and yet elegant.  The furniture had obviously seen many years of use, but had also received just as many years of meticulous care.  On top of the desk was a pile of papers laid exactly in the corner. I can tell that this woman is quite organized.  She enjoys having control of her surroundings. She exudes an air of power, but does not seem to lord it over others.  She will be a good one to watch.  Jaedlyn sat on the edge of the chair, back straight, chin up, eyes cast slightly down.

"I am Pia Tovisen, and I am the mistress of novices." With reverent care, Pia opened the book, flipping through the ancient pages until she reached the most recent entry. "Since the ability to channel has already been found in you, I will now enter you into the book of novices. Every girl who has ever trained in the White Tower is recorded in this book, including me." Pia gave Jaedlyn a friendly wink.  Ah, a sign of companionship, of warmth.  Jaedlyn returned the wink with a slight turn in the right corner of her mouth, nodding her head slightly. "Please state for me your full name, place of birth, and your age." Pia's precise handwriting flowed across the page as the new novice dictated, and Pia finished the entry with the date and her signature. "Be welcome to the tower, novice Jaedlyn." Her handwriting is just as meticulous as her desk and office.  Most assuredly she enjoys controlling her environment.

“My name is Jaedlyn Rancoura, from Arad Doman, and I am 15 years old,” said Jaedlyn, reverting to her normal pattern of soft speech. This must be the most unbelievably uncomfortable chair I have ever sat in, thought Jaed. She took pains to make sure she didn’t show her discomfort.  Jaedlyn watched the woman in front of her carefully, measuring her actions.  So, this is the woman that holds my fate until I become Accepted, and perhaps after that.  Tilting her head slightly, Jaedlyn asked “Pia Sedai, I know that I am to give up all of my possessions now that I belong to the tower.  It would be a shame to have these go to waste.  Would you accept them as a token of my gratitude for this opportunity?”  Jaed reached into her pocket and took a small box of sweets.  “They are from Caemlyn, and regarded as among the best in the city.”

  2. There it was.  Right in front of her stood Tar Valon, the fabled home of the Aes Sedai.  Aes Sedai - those women who were so good at putting people to their proper uses that they used Monarchs as pawns, or so the stories went.    They had arrived at mid day and it was a glorious sight.  Not a story she had heard had done justice to this marvelous white city.  Even Jaedlyn, normally so calm and poised, lost her breath.

The Sister to her side smiled at her as if she were a lost child.  “It is beautiful, isn’t it?  Every time I find myself taking it’s majesty for granted, I notice someone with that exact same look on her face.  But, I need to make sure you understand, once your name is in the novice book, it is unlikely you will see any of the city through more than a tiny window for 10 years.”

Though Jaedlyn was irritated at being looked upon like a toddler pulling on a stranger’s skirt, Jaedlyn simply nodded.  The city would still be there when she was raised to Accepted.  If it was as old as the stories said, 10 years wouldn’t change a thing about it.  She was led on a very direct path to what could only be the White Tower from the legends.  As they arrived at the steps, Jaedlyn began to feel nervous, for the first time in her memory.  The Sister must have noticed, for she placed a hand on Jaedlyn’s shoulder.

“Jaedlyn, do not be afraid.  I do believe that every sister in this tower thought about turning back when they walked up these steps, but there is no need for fear.  We are going to go straight to the Mistress of Novices.  She will meet with you and get everything in order for your stay with us.  I suggest doing some of those breathing exercises I’ve taught you.  They will calm your nerves.”

She closed her eyes briefly and took a slow, shallow breath.  This is something I need to do, if I ever want the sort of power I tasted in Whitebridge.  I can do this. I will do this and I will come out with more power than I have ever dreamed. When she opened her eyes again, she straightened her back a little and began marching herself up those stairs.  She must have taken her escort by surprise, as the Sister had to hurry a little to catch up to her.  It was almost unnoticeable, but Jaedlyn had trained herself to catch these sorts of “imperceptible” actions. Jaedlyn’s mouth turned up at the corners for a brief second before her face was smooth again.

A large line of people stood waiting to get in to the tower.  A young woman wearing a white dress with multicolored stripes at the bottom seemed to be directing the line, turning some people away, allowing some access, taking packages from others, and directing some to other women around the courtyard.  As Jaedlyn approached, the Sister a step behind her, the woman asked, “What business do you have with the White Tower?”

“I wish to enter into the Novice Book,” Jaedlyn said, quietly but clear.  With a glance to the Sister behind her, the woman stepped aside.  Jaedlyn and the Sister moved inside the doors.  Once inside the Sister took the lead and began navigating a series of hallways until they reached a door which the Sister knocked on.

“This is the Mistress of Novice’s office.  She will take your name and information and get you started in your path to the Shawl.  Treat her with respect, and she will be kind to you.  She is fair and just.  Curtsey when you enter her room.  You’ll learn the rest as you go.”

“Enter,” came the call from behind the door.  The sister opened her door and bowed her head slightly to the woman behind the desk.  “This is Jaedlyn Rancoura.  I have tested her and found within her the ability to channel.”  With that, the Sister departed.  Jaedlyn curtseyed, waiting for some indication that she could sit.
