OOC: http://www.gaidin.org/members/displaybio.php?rank=3&id=128 here is my bio if you wish to read it. It may help you in your posts. Also on an additional character note, so you don’t jump to conclusions from the bio: Neroin is a jokester and a prankster. This isn’t mentioned with enough emphasis in the bio but it is an important character trait for him. And here is a note for all those looking and thinking “what the… That’s the old training system!†Don’t worry, this is done out of a special request by the student.

IC: Neroin waited for his new student in the middle of the yard at noon. He was not in a joyful mood because he knew he was already overworked and underpaid. He wanted desperately to know how they had roped him into taking on another student. He only hoped that this student could take a joke. He had trained too many serious people and he hated every minute of it. A boy came running from the Tower toward Neroin, interrupting his thoughts. “You’re a tower trainee right?†The boy nodded, and made a weak gesture to his uniform. “You wouldn’t happen to be Natan would you?†The boy nodded again and Neroin grinned. “That’s good, because I would feel simply terrible about doing this to someone who isn’t my student.†He grinned and pulled a small string he had been hiding behind his back. The ground beneath the boy’s feet opened up and he fell into the earth with a yelp. “It’s only a few paces deep, and the walls aren’t quite vertical. When you get out follow me to the armory.â€

:::: Neroin began walking toward the tower armory. The ground was soft so the boy could easily make hand holds on his own. He heard the boy grunting as he made his way out of the hole and shuffled while patting off the dirt to catch up with Neroin.

:::: Upon entering the armory Neroin grinned. The weapons glittered in the light, and Natan entered just as Neroin turned. “What took you so long? No matter. Choose.†Neroin gestured around the armory. “Take what you want to learn to use, but if you take more than you can handle then I will only laugh at you.â€

OOC: Everything Neroin says is good natured and joking. Don’t take him too seriously. Anyway choose a primary weapon and if you want a secondary (and even tertiary if you so desire) and then we’ll continue. Here is a rather incomplete list from the warder website on weapons: http://www.gaidin.org/armory.php . You may use that for the moment. This is an important decision so feel free to take your time and we can post back and forth discussing the pros and cons of each weapon. As a discipline master I get blanket weapon’s mastery so Icly Neroin would know what he is talking about. IRL I do actually know a lot about weaponry so feel confident that you will get good info.

Leaving his room Natan headed to the yard to finally meet his mentor. He ran all the way there and when he saw a guy standing in the middle of the yard he simply assumed it was Neroin. As he arrived Neroin said “You’re a tower trainee right?†Natan nodded, slightly out of breath. “You wouldn’t happen to be Natan would you?†Natan nodded again. “That’s good, because I would feel simply terrible about doing this to someone who isn’t my student.†Natan was confused until Neroin pulled a string and Natan felt the ground drop out from beneath him. He hit the bottom with a thud and grunted. “It’s only a few paces deep, and the walls aren’t quite vertical. When you get out follow me to the armory.†What a cruel trick, he hadnt even seen it coming. Ashamed that he hadnt thought of something that he himself probably could have pulled off he stood and brushed himself off. Natan chuckled to himself as he readied to climb his "prison". Neroin hadn't really fully thought this through. Natan had been born and raised in Tear. He had tried climbing the Stone nearly every day. He succeeded three times. This little hole would be a sinch. He scrambled up and out just in time to see Neroin walking away. He brushed himself off again and took off after him.

Natan walked into the armory as Neroin turned around. “What took you so long? No matter. Choose.â€Neroin gestured around the armory. “Take what you want to learn to use, but if you take more than you can handle then I will only laugh at you.†Natan sneered at Neroin and walked among the weapons picking one up every once in a while to check the heft. He found a Katana in the corner of the room and grabbed it. It felt perfect in his hands so he decided to keep it. Instictively putting his hand on his left hip, were his Rapier usually was, he made a mental note to tell Neroin he would be continueing in that field. Searching around some more he found some quarterstaffs leaning against the wall. He picked one up and found a spear hiding behind it. He grabbed the spear instead and it felt right to use it. He returned to Neroin with his choices. "I pick; Katana, Spear and I've decided to continue my Rapier training. Mine is back in my room. I believe I can handle this much." He smiled at Neroin.

OOC: It’s ok, as a discipline master I have all weapons proficiency and spears are very easy to use, but difficult to master. Mostly its just stabbing down at things from the tops of a battlement wall or sticking it in the ground so that a charging horse will run into it and run himself through, but if you actually intend to fight with the spear you are better off learning quarterstaff then graduating to having one side weighted then you can use a real spearhead without worrying about unintentionally cutting someone. I have an aiel character so I may be taking a bit of the training from that. Well then I guess we’ll begin with taking care of your weapon.

IC: “You know how to use a rapier already? that wasn’t in your file.†Said Neroin. “Good choice with the Katana. I use a heron-marked blade so that will be easy to teach…†Said Neroin running his hand over the wrapped hilt of his heron marked blade. “As for the spear, I think you should take a quarterstaff and wrap a small sand bag on the end instead. They are dangerous when learning because you have a lot of range so it’s easy to misjudge and cut someone unintentionally.†Neroin rummaged through another cabinet in the armory, took out two items and picked up a quarterstaff of the same proportions as Natan’s spear, then walked outside into the sunlight fully expecting to be followed. “Well swords in general tend to be sharp so cleaning it could be a disaster if you don’t know what your doing.†Neroin held out what he had taken. It was a small wooden box. “This is a standard cleaning kit. It contains oil, a whetstone, and cleaning swabs and cloths. Nothing fancy, only what you need.†Neroin opened the box removed a swab and some oil, and then he unsheathed his heron marked blade. He dabbed the swab on the oil and began tapping the edge of the blade until it was wet with the oil. He pulled out the whetstone and slid it over the edge of the blade carefully and smoothly. “You generally want more oil, but my sword is made quite a bit better than yours so it doesn’t need to be sharpened. Regardless, that is how to use the whet stone. You have to do repeated swipes to actually sharpen the blade. My sword, like yours, only has one edge so you only have to do it once. To clean you take the cloth and hold the blade so the flat side of the blade is facing you. Then slide the cloth upward and away from you. This is all simple. You try.†Neroin handed him the cleaning kit and watched as the student repeated what he had done. Neroin still held his sword.

:::: Neroin held out his hand and the boy stared at it. “Your sword.†He prompted and he handed it to him with reddening cheeks. He tested the sharpness of the edge by scraping his thumb lightly perpendicular to the edge and nodded slightly. “It’s enough to cut skin,†he said thoughtfully as he fought a grin, “but you may want to work on it a bit more…†a muscle twitched and his grin surfaced, “Now I’ll show you how to sharpen the tip.â€

:::: Neroin returned inside briefly and took a rapier off the wall and came back out to take the whet-stone from the girl. “Take a cloth and use it to hold the blade near the tip. Now it takes some arm strength to do this, but you need to rub one edge of the tip back and forth along the stone, then switch it over to the other side and do the same. Once you’ve done this rubbing for each side of each edge the tip’s edges should be sharp. Now the tip itself you run forward and backward on an angle on both flat sides of the blade. Don’t point the tip itself into the stone and rub back and forth that’s just stupid. You want to hone down all the sides and edges around the blade to sharpen it to a point.†Even as he spoke his hands were working. Sharpening the edges and tip of the blade. “Now I want you to do it with your sword.†He returned the whet stone. “Oh and one more thing,†Neroin produced a thick piece of cowhide and a fist sized block of wood from one of his numerous pouches. “When you finish I want the sword to be able to slash through this piece of wood and be able to pierce this cowhide with the tip. When you finish your Katana you should do the spear head and the spare rapier I have here. Hold it by the head when you sharpen it so that you can get some leverage.â€

OOC: Simple stuff. You’ll probably get some grease on your clothes. Sharpen the blade as I showed you and test the edge on the wood and the point on the cowhide. You probably wont get it sharp enough on the first couple of tries, but you wont wear down the blade or anything. Don’t go any farther than completing this task, because next we work on your stance.
