Clearly it struck an emotional chord in fans of the series and I knew it would be a great visual....but so close to the end of the series, I was hoping to showcase Rand. And there are awesome Rand battle scenes! But no matter how many people I asked, including all of the WoT community on Tor.com, everyone kept mentioning this scene.

How can I describe a dream come true? With this report,I'll give it my best try. My day started with my son waking me up saying..It's today! Yes, I admit it,even my eight year old knew how special a day this particular Sunday was going to be for me.

After going to church and offering prayers for the success of the whole Tour with special Trisagion Prayers of Mercy being said for the repose of the Soul of our beloved Departed Creator "Robert Jordan" and for the continued health of Harriet. I drove to Cambridge loaded with books, instructions and questions.

I also had all the the Tower Guard T-shirts. Since the Tower Guards and I did not get to meet prior to the Book Signing, I wouldn't wear my t-shirt until each of the other Tower Guard's had theirs. I wanted so badly to show it off, but felt honor bound not to..so I waited.

All the Tower Guards met at the Harvard Coop where there were lovely displays of the whole of the Wheel of Time Series as well as all of Brandon's books. I was pleased to see that Karen Porter from the bookstore was able to have all the books in time because last year I was unable to obtain even one full set of Brandon's books. This year, they were well stocked.

If one were to guess the amount of people planning to attend the book signing from the facebook page, they would have been surprised. I think we had over fifty people waiting in line at the time the Tower Guards arrived, and we arrived at least

three hours prior to the Signing. We got ourselves set up and Dennis got started right away asking people questions from his specially prepared list. I will include the questions at the end of this report. I must say that the people who "WON" the prizes deserved them. These were no easy questions. In the meantime, I had my cell phone on and was patiently waiting for a call from Brandon and Harriet's driver's to tell us they arrived, when all of a sudden, in walks Brandon. It was like, HE's here..OMG...he's here.

One of the fan's went up and introduced himself to Brandon, reminding him that they met before and Brandon being the gentleman that he is, started to get involved in the conversation. We,. the Tower Guards being jealous of our personal time with Brandon and feeling it dwindle away, rushed him off to the fourth floor where the Coop kindly brought up a light lunch for us all. One of the Guards met with Harriet and we all sat down for our books to be signed, receive special instructions and ask questions.

We're not allowed to "discuss" spoilers but suffice it to say that most of our questions were met with "RAFO". I needed to be told what RAFO stood for. (Read and Found Out). Brandon told us that this was one of +Robert Jordan's favorite answers. I can see why. After our time for which I and I'm certain the other Tower Guards are forever grateful for, we went to the book signing area where it seemed that the amount of people tripled. The first thing evident other than the size of the crowd was the diversity of the crowd. We had people from all over the world, Brazil, Portugal, India, China, Korea, Japan, Israel and Lebanon. Children, infant's and parents all were together to show support and love for the Wheel of Time Series and for their new favorite author.

I met many people there who actually found out about the Wheel of Time because of Brandon's Sanderson's books and vice versa. While listening to many of the conversations the majority of people echoed the grateful feelings that Brandon is the one finishing the Series and that he is doing a "bang up job" of it. (bang up job-not being my words). I don't remember her name, sorry, but when I was asked by a young lady who the woman was sitting next to Brandon and I told her that it was Harriet, +Robert Jordan's widow, she was in awe almost to the point of tears.

Brandon was introduced by Richard, a member of the Harvard Coop who was incredible. He compared the Wheel of Time with Mahabaharat both in size and complexity and really "blew it out the of the ballpark"! Brandon said a few words and made his plea for everyone to patronize the book store and thanked the Harvard Coop for hosting us. He then introduced Harriet who read from my book! Squee!! Brandon had chosen to read from my book last year and HE mentioned that Harriet should read from my book this year so I would have a set. Isn't he Super Fantastic??!! Silly question I know.

Harriet read the Prologue and the few dry eyes that were in the crowd were probably hiding their tears well. I hope that my Tower Guard who had to step away for a moment doesn't get angry at me for writing this. What passion! What a Blessing to have had Harriet with us!

After the Reading, which I do have on video and will post here, the actual signing took place. On a sidenote, my Red Sister, Kaths made me a shawl so that I could have it in time for the signing, and Harriet LOVED it. Kaths, you did good! I draped the shawl over the chair that Harriet or Brandon were going to sit in and there it stayed!

I digress.

Venkat and Andrea, who is the Mistress of Novices at theoryland.net, immediately started taking pictures, Bob and Dennis organized the people and started asking questions, I was standing there to make sure that everything was going well and if Brandon or Harriet needed anything, I was there to get it . The line went quickly with many surprise gifts for Brandon, Peter, his assistant, and Harriet.

We actually finished half an hour prior to Brandon's deadline and got to spend an extra

half an hour of quality time with the small group that remained. There were many people that made great impressions on us. The Wolf Brother was one, Kalyani, who made special t-shirts for Brandon and Harriet and a special one for Peter, because he answers all her questions. Kalyana was promised to be a Trooper/Guard next year and it struck a chord because the first thing out of her mouth was,

"I hope I am in the US next year." I will go anywhere." It's fair to say that all who heard her heartfelt wish also want her to be in the US for the next Signing. Kalyani, I hope to see you next year!

The little babies who were at the signing were a treasure but the young 13 year old who asked Brendan a question to which he was answered.."RAFO" was adorable. Okay,so I'm showing my age..but he was. Last but not least was the Pi Lanningham. who insisted that he be the "last" in line. Check out his t-shirt. I want one of those!

After everyone had their books signed, extra books signed for the Coop, we presented Harriet and Brandon with our gifts to them. We got "Dark Magic Cards" for Brandon and a Harvard Sweatshirt for him and for Harriet. My trooper decided to get some small gifts for Brandon's children because as he said, parents love to buy gifts for their children and it didn't look like Brandon would have any time to do much shopping. I agree, great job!

Some things you may or may have not known.

Harriet graduated from Harvard University. She had a hand in editing "The Way of Kings. and drum roll please, Brandon let it slip that there will be one more opportunity to make a donation and

have the chance to have your name be in the Final book of the series!!!!!!

THANK YOU!

After the signing a small group of us,not wanting to end this magical day went to Grendel's Den and had dinner. Thank you Alric, it was a perfect place to talk, eat, have a drink and re-hash the events of the day.

I would like to end this report by mentioning the dedication of the Towers of Midnight. What a tribute!

I offer my sincere Thanks to Brandon, Harriet and all of you who work behind the scenes. This was a great signing because of all your hard work and dedication and the Troopers and I thank you so much for this opportunity.

May your Memory Be Eternal Creator!

So brush up those theories and watch out for RAFO cards, I hear Brandon’s getting quite the throwing arm…

Three weeks ago we announced that we were taking applications for "Tower Guard" for the upcoming TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT signing tour. Like last year's Storm Leaders, these are volunteers that will assist Brandon and Harriet at each signing event. You might see them taking photos, writing notes for an official report or handing out some really cool Wheel of Time swag.

In total, we received 324 applications for 56 positions in eight cities, the most coming in for Provo, Utah's midnight release event. So if you didn't get chosen, don't feel bad. You're in good company. If you weren't chosen this year, please try again when A MEMORY OF LIGHT is released.

Here are the first names and last initials of everyone selected this year.

Note: There are some extra names on some lists. These are people who have made extraordinary contributions to the fandom and have been added to the list by request. They did not take a spot away from another Tower Guard.

The prologue was released as an eBook several weeks ago and can be purchased online. Chapter 7 (the first Mat point-of-view chapter) was made available recently on Brandon Sanderson's website, and can also be read right here on Dragonmont.

On November 2nd, Towers of Midnight, book thirteen of the Wheel of Time, will be released around the world. Beginning at midnight that morning, Brandon Sanderson will kick off his U.S tour. You can get the exact times and locations of each tour stop below.

For each one of the book tour events, Dragonmount will be recruiting approximately 5-7 Tower Guards. The Tower Guard will get the rare opportunity to meet with Brandon and Harriet in a casual setting before the actual book signing, and discuss whatever you guys like. You can also get your books signed and personalized in advance. The amount of time you'll have to hang out will vary from city to city depending on Brandon's schedule, but right now we're estimating that it will be about an hour. And, of course, you'll receive an Official Collector's Edition 2010 Towers of Midnight Tour T-shirt. (Oh yeah)

In return for this opportunity, we're going to put you to work. Each member of the Tower Guard will be asked to help document the event in different ways. Some Guard Members will take photos. Others will take notes and do a blog write-up for DM to share with the wider community. Some will hand out promotional material to people standing in line. If the bookstore needs help organizing lines, one of the Guard will be there to help. If Harriet needs a glass of water, the Tower Guard will be there to take care of that.

Another important task for some of the Tower Guard will be to get involved on our message boards, and on our Facebook group to help promote the event. We'll probably ask that each "regiment" of the Tower Guard get together in person at the bookstore once before the event in order to work out the logistics and delegate tasks to be in charge of. You'll be provided with a packet of more detailed guidelines once the teams are assembled.

What are we looking for in members of the Tower Guard?

First and foremost, we're looking for people who are excited about this book release, and excited about meeting Brandon, Harriet and your fellow fans. Because being a member of the Tower Guard requires a lot of organization and initiative, we're looking for people who are proactive and willing to work a little bit. Age isn't a factor. In fact, we want to put teams together that have a diverse range of ages. If you have some good experience in organizing club activities, or have been a contributing member to the various online WoT communities, be sure to mention that in your application. Above all, tell us why you should get selected and why Brandon and Harriet might want to meet you.

What if I'm just a casual fan but still want to be a part of this?

No problem. You don't have to have been a part of a WoT community staff for the last decade to get involved. As long as you're willing to help with the tasks that need to get done, then we'll consider you.

Who's doing the selections?

Jason Denzel, Jennifer Liang and myself (James Luckman) will be going through the applications and putting together interesting and diverse groups. We don't accept bribes, and we hope you won't hurt us if you're not selected. We're expecting a pretty big turn-out of applications. Everyone will get a fair shot. We might even save some open slots to be filled by random selection.

Okay, so how do I apply?

We are now accepting applications. To apply, fill out the web form below. You cannot apply more than once, but you can list your first and second choice of events to attend. You cannot serve on the Tower Guard for more than one event, and we regret that we cannot choose you again if you were chosen as a Storm Leader last year.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 PM (U.S. Pacific Time) on October 8th.

We will review all of the applications and offer positions on the Tower Guard to people within a week after the deadline. This should hopefully give you enough time to get the day/afternoon/evening off from work or other commitments.

About a year ago, you and I and the rest of the Wheel of Time fan base were eagerly awaiting the release of The Gathering Storm, the twelfth book in the series, and the first one written in large part by Brandon Sanderson, the relatively unheard-at-the-time fantasy writer who was chosen to complete Robert Jordan's epic. The burning question back then was, "Can Brandon deliver?". The answer was nearly unanimous amongst fans: not only did he deliver a good Wheel of Time book, but he delivered one of the most exciting Wheel of Time books yet. The book was a smash success, and by and large fans everywhere took a deep sigh of relief. In my original review of The Gathering Storm (TGS), I called the book one of the finest in the series, and I stand by that statement.

So now the question has become: can Brandon do it again? Is Towers of Midnight (TofM), the penultimate novel in The Wheel of Time series, as good as--or better-- than its predecessor? Brandon gained fan confidence by writing TGS. The bar has been raised. Does this next novel live up to the hype?

Of course it does. It's an amazing novel.

I've had the privilege of reading it, and I'd like to share some thoughts regarding it with you.

But first, I'm once again obliged to give a few disclaimers. My involvement with the WoT franchise is deeper than most fans. More and more, rather than being a passive observer, I'm finding myself actually helping to create content for the Wheel of Time (via my involvement in other parts of the franchise such as games, movies, etc). In this case, I was one of Brandon Sanderson's beta readers. This means that the version of the book I'm reviewing was a version that was still incomplete, and was towards the end of its editing process. More importantly, I provided feedback, both technical and creative, which may have had an impact on the writing. (I say 'may' because I honestly don't know yet whether some or any of my suggestions and feedback were taken.) In addition, I happen to run a large WoT fan site and therefore find myself promoting these books on a daily basis. I've had business dealings with Tor (although I have never been paid to do any of this and I do not accept money for promoting WoT). I'm not here to sell books. I am here to represent you, and share my honest feelings regarding this new book. I realize I can never be truly impartial, but I'll sure do my best. Like you, I'm a fan first, and always will be.

So with all that said, let's cut to it. Towers of Midnight is an outstanding novel, but I wouldn't say it was the finest in the series, nor can I say I personally enjoyed it more than its predecessor. But don't let that fool you. As <a href="http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/09/the-wheel-of-time-towers-of-midnight-advance-review" target="news">Leigh Butler wrote in her recent review, these books are all like family, and so of course I loved it overall. And so will you. It's just that for me, as an individual reader, I personally enjoyed the tighter focus of the previous novel over this one. Viewed in terms of the whole series, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that TofM fits into the series and successfully sets the stage for the final, explosive novel.

Let's take a closer look.

"To understand something", Perrin notes early in the book, "you have to know its parts." Well, Towers of Midnight is made up of a lot of complicated parts. It makes The Gathering Storm seem simplistic by comparison. The two of them are as different as The Great Hunt is from Lord of Chaos. This surprised me. I expected Brandon to deliver a novel that was just like the last one; to just continue with the same pacing and style as before. But he didn't. Instead, he did what I feel was the right thing and followed the needs of the story. TofM is darker, grittier, and filled with a lot more external conflict than TGS. The prose is consistent with its predecessor, but overall the book has the feel of the later WoT novels. More viewpoints. A wider scope. I loved reading about the increasing threat to the world; the mounting tide of darkness sweeping across the land.

[begin minor spoilers. Some of you will think these aren't true spoilers, and some of you will complain if I don't label them. So I'm playing it safe.]

In TGS, the primary focus of the book was on Rand and Egwene. It was that intense focus on their dramatic character arcs that made me love that novel so much. Although Rand and Egwene have some important roles to play in ToM, the primary focus shifts over to Mat and Perrin. Perrin has a wonderful arc in this book, even if it is just a tad slow to initially get going. (But hey, nobody ever said anything in WoT was fast, eh? Just chew your food and savor the taste). This is balanced by the fact that Perrin probably has the most action in the book. Well, except for poor Ituralde. The man just can't catch a break can he?

Chief among the aspects of this book that I loved is our favorite gambler. I'm happy to report that Mat is back. In a big way. I give Brandon a lot of credit for listening to feedback from fans who thought Mat's character voice was somewhat "off" in TGS. We'll never know how much of the book was personally written by Robert Jordan before he died, and how much was written by Brandon, but the point is that Mat not only sounds right in most of his chapters, but he is in his finest form. Quite simply, Mat redefines the very meaning of Awesome in this book. He's funny, but in a less slapstick way like he was in TGS. His internalized sarcastic humor is contrasted by the fact that he just bloody cares too much about people around him, and that makes him the old Mat we all know and love.

(If you haven't already heard, you can read the first Mat viewpoint chapter from ToM right here on Dragonmount)

I won't tell you what the best parts of the book were, of course, but I'll tell you that two of them were so good, they'll just shred you to pieces emotionally. Both of them are completely unexpected, and they happen to occur in a series of three back-to-back-to-back chapters. (Well, in the version I read. They may have been re-ordered since I read it in manuscript form) One of the chapters involved Perrin. And no… She's not involved. It's not what you think. So stop guessing.

The other scene that rocked me to read is one that completely embraces the spirit of the whole series. It's the epitome of what makes The Wheel of Time stand apart from all other fantasy series. To say that I was moved by it is an understatement. After reading it, I honestly began to question whether this story will actually have a happy ending or not. I mean, let's face it. Most of us assume the series will conclude with a victory at the Last Battle, with maybe a few heroic deaths along the way, right? Well this sequence I'm talking about proves that even victory can be disaster. It shows that even the most noble of intentions can have a butterfly-effect ripple across the Pattern. The sequence was beautiful to behold, and that alone makes ToM worthy of being on the shelf with your other WoT books.

What else?

Ah yes. If you'll excuse some shameless self-promotion, you need to go watch the Towers of Midnight book trailer. Once you've done that, then we can talk about Her.

Yes that plotline is addressed in ToM. But not in any way that resembles the video linked above. (The video was produced before I read the actual book) Some aspects play out as you might expect, but there are a lot of key surprises along the way. I devoured every word, and loved everything to do with it. And of course, it left me wanting more!

One last plot-related item…. Olver. There's a chapter involving him that just breaks my heart. Now maybe it's just me. I'm not talking about a big dramatic scene. (Although it does have another big reveal). Most people might find humor in it. But not me. Maybe I'm just sensitive. Remember what I said earlier about the price of victory? What happens here is both endearing and tragic. On one hand it was logical and inevitable that things would play out this way. On the other hand, I just never saw it coming, and neither will you (not that it will stop you from trying, huh?). I tip my hat to you, Mr. Jordan and Mr. Sanderson. Once again, you've given us a moment that people can debate. For me personally, it'll stick in my gut for a long time.

[END spoilers.]

It occurred to me as I finished this book that this is almost it. After ToM, there's only one more book to go. One last round in the great fight. These characters, this world, they're a part of me. And clearly, they're a part of you and a great many others as well. Some of you are new to the series, and many of you have been reading it for a very long time. Regardless of when we started though, we all see the same looming horizon before us. The inevitable arrival of the Last Battle, and the fabled "Last Chapter" that Robert Jordan spoke of for years. We've reached the sunset of this Age, and after reading ToM, I just don't know how it will end anymore.

This book will always have a special place in my heart. In part for my involvement as a beta reader, in part for the book trailer project, and even for the book's dedication which is a profound and humbling gesture. But mostly, this book will be special to me because it marks the true beginning of the end. Story-wise, the "good guys" are gathered and ready to go. But in fact they're in shambles, just barely held together. But in terms of us, as a community of fans, we are gathered like never before. I'm proud to see our fandom linked in this last year like I've never seen. We all know there's something special about this series, and Towers of Midnight is without a doubt a fine and worthy addition to its ranks. I look forward to riding the storm with you guys one last time to Tarmon Gaidon. One last charge. One last book.

We will meet it with swords raised.

We've been given all the information for the Towers of Midnight book tour. As with The Gathering Storm tour, the events will kick off with a midnight release party in Provo, UT. Then the tour begins on the West Coast in Sacramento, CA (Dragonmount.com's home town!) and will conclude in New York City on November 8th.

The tour this time will be shorter than last year's due in part to the fact that Brandon just had another recent tour (completed this week) for The Way of Kings, his latest solo novel. But there's a special surprise: Harriet will be attending every one of the book tour events!

Also, just like last year, each site will have a a select group of volunteer fans who will help run the show and document the event. These "Tower Guards" will get a chance to meet with Brandon and Harriet in private before the signing event. Applications to be a Tower Guard will go online on our website in the near future.

As you might know, Brandon and company have been tantalizing the fandom with The Great Hunt-- a scavenger hunt to decode an exclusive chapter preview from Towers of Midnight, the thirteenth novel in the Wheel of Time series.

The chapter title is The Seven-Striped Lass, and is a chapter featuring Mat Cauthon.

The last clue was placed at a Venice, Italy photo booth. This was discovered entirely due to the collaboration of WoT fans world wide. Unfortunately when our intrepid Italian WoT friend Federico went to get the clue, it had been lost. But he did get a great picture! Brandon took pity and gave us credit for finding it anyway! The Chapter Preview is now completely unlocked at Brandon's site. It's been an amazing experience for all involved, and we all want to thank Brandon, his brother Jordan, Peter Ahlstrom, and TOR Books for bringing us The Great Hunt!

The book is on schedule for a November 2, 2010 release. At this point Tor needs to take the digital manuscript-- basically just a Microsoft Word File-- and turn it into a novel. It needs to be copyedited, laid out with the right fonts and margins, artwork needs to be added, review copies generated, and printed. (It can take a long time to print that many books and bind them!)

Brandon is scheduled to go on a book tour for Towers of Midnight in November. Once the schedule is posted, well share it with you here on Dragonmount. Some of you have been asking if we'll be doing the Storm Leaders for this this year's tour. The answer is yes, but we don't have details yet. Applications will probably go online within a few weeks, after DragonCon (Sept 3-6).

In the meantime, be aware that Brandon will be on tour for his other upcoming novel, <a href="<a href="http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/05/way-of-kings-master-index%22>The" rel="external nofollow">http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/05/way-of-kings-master-index">The Way of Kings. The complete tour schedule for that <a href="<a href="http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/06/brandon-sandersons-the-way-of-kings-tour-announced%22>can" rel="external nofollow">http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/06/brandon-sandersons-the-way-of-kings-tour-announced">can be found on this page at Tor.com.
