This story contains spoilers for the entire Wheel of Time series, until the very end of A Memory of Light. Please proceed with caution if you haven’t finished the book!

Brandon Sanderson and Harriet McDougal hold copies of A Memory of Light in January 2013. 

It has been ten years since A Memory of Light, the final volume of The Wheel of Time was released. Since then fans have read and reread the books. New fans have found their way to the books, and have finished the series. Most of the mysteries from the series are tied up, but not all of them.

For ten years, author Brandon Sanderson has been holding onto one final secret, which he revealed during a recent interview with Matt Hatch on The Dusty Wheel YouTube channel.  

Brandon talked with Team Jordan, and the plan was to always reveal this final secret after ten years. Matt and Brandon also discussed other secrets that have been haunting fans for the last ten years. They divided the conversation into three parts, the first, are secrets that are perhaps resolved, and have been discussed before. The middle is the big new reveal, and the final section is a Q&A from fans.

There are number of existing fan theories from the end of A Memory of Light that Brandon and Matt covered during their conversation.

• First is “the pipe”. Rand lights a pipe in the Epilogue, and Brandon confirms it is one of the last mysteries of the series. We will forever be able to debate and theorize about it because Robert Jordan left no answers. Brandon believes that Rand was close to the pattern, and therefore able to affect objects In the real world. Harriet believes it’s Jordan’s way of showing us that the 4th age will be as different from the 3rd as the 3rd was from the 2nd. Matt Hatch said his favorite theory is his friend Mary’s - it’s a ter’angreal.
• The next mystery is the identity of Nakomi, the aiel woman who visits first Aviendha and then Rand at the end of the books. Robert Jordan included a woman at the bore after Rand had walked out of Shayol Ghul, but left no details and no one from Team Jordan knew who she was. Brandon added the scene with Aviendha to foreshadow this mystery woman. He said it’s canon that Aviendha is asleep, but the details of Nakomi’s identity is Brandon’s theory more than anything.  All the details about Nakomi are revealed in Origins of the Wheel of Time by Michael Livingston.
• Brandon and Matt also discussed the body swap theory from the end of the books. There was a thread on reddit in 2019 where someone correctly outlined how the body swap worked, with the two men being linked by balefire streams crossing. Brandon confirmed this theory, and confirmed the answer comes from Robert Jordan via Harriet.

  Quote

  The soul that wanted to live found the body that wanted to live, and the soul that wanted to die didn't go to the effort."

  Brandon sees this as a chance for Rand to lay down the weight and go live a life. 

Then we come to the big “final” secret. 

• At the very end of A Memory of Light, the forsaken, Lanfear, is alive. She faked her death!
• Matt and Brandon give some background on this from way back when Matt was a beta reader. Matt found the foreshadowing too obvious in A Memory of Light, but time has proven Brandon correct that sometimes foreshadowing needs to be a little bit more heavy handed - not many people picked up on the subtle game Lanfear played with Perrin during the final book. Brandon frames the thought process this way - Lanfear was in a no-win situation where no solution would work. She needed a credible witness to confirm her death so the good guys wouldn’t come after her, and she needed the good guys to win so the dark one wouldn’t punish her in the end. She helps Perrin and manipulates Perrin into thinking he cannot be affected by compulsion. And in the end, she lives with everyone believing she is dead.

The rest of the interview involve a few other points about the ending of the books, including Egwene’s story line, and who decided her fate (Team Jordan), whether Rand would raise his children (yes!), and that we will see the Bridal Wreath scene (eventually, someday). The final section of the interview are some fun and interesting Q&A from fans. Brandon reveals some fun tidbits: like Harriet wrote most of the chapter titles for Robert Jordan and for Brandon; Brandon would remove some the spanking scenes in hindsight; and he’d have his team help with the timelines now knowing there are three books. Brandon would add more Padan Fain, but keep the ending with Mat. Brandon had many calls from fans for a Narg cameo, but in the end, he didn’t include a talking trolloc.

The release of A Memory of Light was the end of the book series, and yet in the 10 years since then we’ve continued to have some new material, in the companion book, in Origins of the Wheel of Time, and from interviews with Brandon, Harriet and Team Jordan. And now, it seems, we know everything that we ever will know. The rest is speculation and theorizing.

There are no endings to the Wheel of Time, but it was an ending.

Today Tor Books released new information about the Wheel of Time Companion, the upcoming encyclopedia-style supplement to the Wheel of Time series.  

Here's what we know about the book so far:

• It will be released in November 2015.
• It's organized alphabetically, like an encyclopedia, with entries for all 2,000+ named characters in the series.
• It includes a complete dictionary for the Old Tongue.
• It includes other information about the characters, history, and world such as the relative strengths for many channelers.
• It includes new maps and character illustrations (although we are not sure if they are color or black and white. No artists have been announced).
• It includes all of the maps previously found inside the books.
• The complete book is over 350,000 words, which makes it as longer than an average-sized WoT novel.
• The Companion will have spoilers for the entire series.

There are quite a few questions that were asked over the past year or so, since the release of A Memory of Light, that have been given a "MAFO" (Maria and Find Out) instead of the usual "RAFO" (Read and Find Out).  Basically, whoever answered--be it Brandon Sanderson or even Harriet McDougal--said there might be more details in Robert Jordan's notes, and one of his assistants could be able to supply more information.  There are twenty-three questions that Maria was asked, and she elaborates on many of them.  Enjoy!

Question One

Luckers: Who was behind the attack on Demira Sedai?

Brandon: MAFO

That was Padan Fain and his corrupted Whitecloaks. (I gave this answer to James earlier, but I don’t know if he disseminated it.)

Question Two

Luckers: Can someone who is leashed by an a’dam touch Tel’aran’rhiod?

Brandon: *blinks at me* Umm. That’s a really good question.

Luckers: I ask, because it’s odd that Moghedien never tried to use the dream to escape, or to capture someone in Salidar and compel her to free Moghedien in the waking world, or anything like that.

Brandon: Yeah, that’s a good question. I’d guess no, but you can MAFO that.

I believe that you cannot touch Tel’aran’rhiod while leashed, but I can’t find anything in the notes that states so outright.

Question Three

Luckers: Okay, so the warding on the Great Holding in Tear… it’s just, Moiraine, Mat, Rand, the Wonder Girls, all come and go with ease, yet Mesaana speaks of there being a nasty warding that stopped her getting in, and there is no sign that Be’lal… I mean, why wouldn’t Be’lal have taken the fat man angreal?

Brandon: *nodding before I finished* MAFO. That was something I was going to look into myself, because it stumped me during my last re-read.

It is my understanding that Rand put that warding on when he was getting ready to leave Tear. As for Be’lal . . . well, he was one of the Chosen; what need had he of an angreal to go up against an untrained sheepherder? That’s my best guess, anyway.

Question Four

Luckers: Sammael claims to have a truce with Rand, even though we see Rand turn him down. Was Sammael lying, or did…

Brandon: I’m fairly sure he was lying. As in, I’ve seen something in the notes at one point, and I’m pretty sure it was… but my memory being what it is, I will say you can MAFO that. But I’m pretty sure he was lying.

Sammael was lying in an attempt to manipulate Graendal. (the other one that I gave to Luckers before)

Question Five

Luckers: What was the stylized raven that Min viewed around Carlinya?

Brandon: I thought that had already been answered. Did Jim not answer this?

Luckers: No. Everyone thought it referred to Carlinya being da’covale to the Empress. But no, it hasn’t been answered.

Brandon: Oh. Oh, okay. Well, I will RAFO/MAFO it. You can email Maria and me about it, but I may have to RAFO it.

The raven is a symbol of the Dark One as well as the Seanchan; Carlinya was killed fighting the Black Ajah.

Question Six (this question was misquoted the first time it was answered)

Original Line of Question

Roga: Does Elayne know that Alanna bonded Rand?

Brandon:  Ah...well...I'll have to check that. MAFO. Good question.

Maria: From Winter’s Heart, chapter 12, Rand speaking to Elayne, Aviendha, and Min: “Anyway, Alanna Mosvani got there ahead of you, and she didn’t bother asking . . . I’ve been bonded to her for months now.”

Actual Question

Roga: If this question came from the Dallas signing, then it was from me. I asked about Egwene. The reason behind the question was, I wanted to know: if Alanna's name had been on Verin's list in The Gathering Storm, would Egwene have passed over it? However, Brandon pointed out that Verin knew about the bond, so unless she had some reason to keep quiet, I'd think she should've made some kind of special warning note if Alanna had been in her list.

Egwene did not know.

Question Seven

Terez:  There is one case in which I suspect that RJ gave an Aes Sedai answer and the reporter may not have gotten it exactly. Question: Was Else always Lanfear? RJ Answer: No. Else did exist as a separate human but was played by Lanfear after Else was expelled. Terez Question: Strange, because of the personality 'Else' showed, and the Tear trap being Mesaana's trap, not Lanfear's. Any comment?

Brandon: MAFO

I cannot find anything to clarify the question.

Question  Eight

Terez: I thought of a Lan question. Did Elyas really teach Lan anything about the Blight? Or was that a TEOTWism? I have a feeling you are going to MAFO that. Does @MariaLSimons play Magic? Surely we can bribe her with something.

Brandon: I've never questioned that one, so I haven't thought to ask about it or look it up. Is there a reason I should wonder?

Terez: Only that Lan was practically raised in the Blight by the Malkieri. Wouldn't think Elyas could teach him much about it.

Brandon: That is a good point. I'll go ahead and do as you said and MAFO that one. You might be right; might be an EoTWism.

I can’t find anything to clarify this, either. I will just offer up anecdote: I have been reading WoT for 22 years, and went to work for its creator over 17 years ago. I could be said to live and breathe The Wheel of Time. But Terez has taught me much about WoT. It could be a TEOTWism, or Lan could have been thinking of some very specific things that Elyas shared that he found helpful.

Question Nine

Could thirteen Aes Sedai linked shield Rand while he was channeling using Callandor? What about with Choedan Kal at full power?

I really don’t think so, for either, but I cannot find it specifically stated.

Question Ten

How many rounds are there in the Age of Legends game sha'rah?

I don’t know.

Question Eleven

Question: Can you clear up the timeline issues? How do Mat, Perrin, Rand, and Egwene all match up in the timeline?

Brandon: The Gathering Storm begins sometime in April. It ends around the end of June/beginning of July. However, Perrin advanced very little—only about two weeks. Mat advanced a bit more, but was still about a month behind Rand and Egwene (this gets an asterisk as a MAFO), but Mat traveled to Caemlyn about 30 days before the end of the book—he emphasized 30 days and asked if I understood the significance of that—I said that I do. (Interpretation: Mat will open Verin’s letter very early in Towers of Midnight). Tuon's timeline jumps around the most. In Knife of Dreams, she ended about a month ahead of everyone else. There were probably (MAFO) about two weeks between her meeting with Rand and the launch of the attack on the White Tower.

 That sounds about right to me.

Question Twelve

Question: When I was in line, I asked Brandon and Harriet (mostly Harriet, since she was signing my books) if the Andoran royal line is descended from Rand's Aiel line (see this post).

 Harriet: I got a lovely smile from Harriet that told me she was pleased that someone had finally figured that out, and she said that she believes I am exactly right about that. She was a little sketchy on the details, though, and so was Brandon, so Brandon said it was essentially a MAFO. So I talked to Maria after that session, and she was taking a break so I didn't want to ask her about it just then, so I asked her if I could message her about it, and the other MAFO we got today, and she said yes, so I will hopefully be hearing more about that soon. Brandon asked me not to put that one in the interview database until I hear from Maria about it.

Oops. I really have been terribly slow with these. I can’t find anything that says yea or nay on this one.

Question Thirteen

Who thought up the mindtrap? Any circumstances you can divulge...?

I know nothing.

Question Fourteen

Can a Dreamer access Tel'aran'rhiod if trapped by the 'Finns?

I don’t know. I don’t think so, but I can’t back that up.

Question Fifteen

What did Cadsuane use to blackmail Flinn, Narishma, and Manfor?

A quote from the notes: “For the men, it would have been at least partly a matter of blackmail. They are distrusting of Rand, and also of Taim to various degrees; none thinks it’s safe to go back to the Black Tower; they are known in Cairhien as men who can channel, and also elsewhere, making them marked to an extent, at least on their own.”

So it wasn’t anything really hidden, it was just “let us bond you and we’ll help you; otherwise you’re all on your own.” And it was Hopwil, not Manfor, who was in the first group bonded.

Question  Sixteen

Are there any rogue Heroes of the Horn? [as in] if a Hero was acting intentionally or not to either advance the goals of the Shadow or to interfere with the actions of other Heroes.

Brandon: I do not know of any. We can MAFO it, but I'm pretty sure that there are none doing that. They don't all get along, mind you. But I don't believe any of them are Darkfriends.

There are no rogue Heroes of the Horn.

Question  Seventeen

Why did Fain say he had to go to Caemlyn first before the White Tower, though he actually went to the White Tower then Caemlyn (as least as far as we see in the books)?

The next time we see him he is in Tar Valon, it is true, but that doesn't mean he didn't stop by Caemlyn on the way.  He could have gone to Caemlyn before Tar Valon, although the timing would be rather tight, I think. There are other possibilities: he intended to go to Caemlyn, somehow learned Rahvin was there, and decided to skip that for the time being. Or he intended to go to Caemlyn, but his baser instincts prevailed and he decided to get his dagger first. I can't find a solid answer.

Question Eighteen

Did Nynaeve realize that Suroth was a Darkfriend from their meeting in Falme, and if so, why didn't she warn Rand after he got the invitation from her?

I think that with the Seanchan being as they were, Nynaeve might not assume that one who does something such as this would have to be a Darkfriend; the Seanchan are different--they collar women who can channel and own other people, two things that most Randlanders find evil. So I can see Nynaeve not making the connection. Egwene and Min were a little distracted at the time, being collared and almost killed, so I can see it not making the impact on them that it does on readers.

Question Nineteen

Why didn't the Seanchan invade Ghealdan?

From Alan: Their plan was to push east quickly through Illian and eventually sweep north into Andor and beyond.  Ghealdan was not a military threat to them for the time being, and it would fall easily to them once they had consolidated control of the southeast.  There are only so many fronts on which an army wishes, or should wish, to fight simultaneously, even an army of great strength.  History is littered with the corpses of generals who made that mistake.

Question Twenty

How many of the Heroes of the Horn are currently "in the flesh"?

Oh, the passage of time. If I had answered these back when I should have, I would have RAFOed. But now that AMoL is out, at least I will say that there are fewer than there were. I don’t have hard numbers on all the heroes.

How did the Eye of the World's location move about?

I don’t know.

Question Twenty-Two

 How Moiraine is able to able to learn which Forsaken is in power in Tear and Illian in The Dragon Reborn?

I’ve always assumed research, research, research. I have no better answer.

Question Twenty-Three

When Lan tracked down Myrelle in Lord of Chaos, she used the bond to Compel him to come to her, in such a way that he wouldn't detect it. Did she have to use the bond to seduce Lan, or did he just go along because he didn't have anything better to do?

The question poses a false dichotomous argument: was Lan "seduced" by the bond or did he have nothing better to do?  Suffice to say that Lan was psychologically devastated at this point--not in his right mind, his will to live shattered.  Myrelle took control of him to save his life; he really had no choice in the matter.   And here’s a quote from the notes for you: “She had to use the bond to compel [notice lower case here] him, sometimes, which she found both odd and somewhat insulting.”  But one has to put this in the context of her other Warders, who eagerly complied with her desires, carnal or otherwise.

This morning Brandon Sanderson launched a new page on his website discussing the process of creating the final three Wheel of Time novels: The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light. 

The page is intended to be the first in an on-going series of articles chronicling some of the lessons and discoveries he made while writing these books. But Brandon said that a lot of details about why he made certain decisions will have to wait before being shared with us:

 

Harriet pointed out that work on the encyclopedia of the Wheel of Time is still in progress. She and Team Jordan haven’t yet finished deciding what tidbits from the notes they want to include in the encyclopedia, and she thinks now is not the time to release them. (Or even for me to talk about specifics.)

 

Therefore, I can’t talk about many specific scenes. Instead, then, I want to talk about the general process—which might be of more interest to many of you.

At JordanCon V, I had the distinct privilege to purchase one of Michael Whelan's original concept paintings for A Memory of Light. 

The story behind is this image is that it’s one of several concepts that Michael provided to Tor Books. From what I understand, this particular painting was one of the top choices to become the actual book cover, but the publisher wanted an image which included the lunar eclipse.  If this image had been selected, Michael would have re-painted it, and added a significant amount of more detail.

The painting depicts Rand, holding Callandor, outside the cave at Shayol Ghul, right before he descends to face the Dark One.

Harriet and I decided we were going to make [The Eye of the World] a bestseller. We did it in trade paper because we were afraid we couldn’t get enough out of a fat hardcover book. Trade paper wasn’t anywhere near as big then as it is now, but we thought that’s good, too, because it will call attention to itself. It’ll be different. So we did it in trade paper and sold 40,000 copies, which was huge for trade paper in those days, for the first of a fantasy series.

[The late ebook release] wasn’t a selfish reason. The brick‑and‑mortar bookstores were very good to Robert Jordan throughout his career. They are having a hard time now. A Memory of Light, the final book in the Wheel of Time series, has debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. This is the seventh straight book in the series to debut at #1.

Congratulations to Brandon, Harriet, Team Jordan, and everyone at Tor Books. This is a fitting and appropriate accomplishment for the end of the series.

The Book Tour
Brandon Sanderson and Harriet McDougal will be going on Book Tour. You can attend the events below and meet them in person. Harriet will sign any book written by Robert Jordan, and Brandon will sign his books, including the 3 WoT books he wrote. Some of the events will also have other guests such as Alan and Maria from Team Jordan, myself, Jennifer Liang, Matt Hatch (from Theoryland.com), and others.

Each event will also have a team of "Memory Keepers"--volunteer fans who help organize the event and will be conducting games and handing out promotional materials.

Dragonmount is pleased to announce the "Memory Keepers" for the A Memory of Light signing tour that will take place in just a few weeks. These volunteers will be at each event handing out promotional materials, assisting Brandon Sanderson and Harriet McDougal and taking notes for the official signing reports to be posted here. The final book in the Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light, will be released on January 8, 2013. This date also marks the beginning of Brandon Sanderson's A Memory of Light book tour. You can find the list of dates, locations, and venues here.

Dragonmount will be recruiting approximately 5-7 Memory Keepers for each book signing event. The Memory Keepers will get the coveted opportunity to meet with Brandon (and in some cases, Harriet McDougal Rigney) in a casual setting before the actual book signing. This usually involves meeting for a meal at a location near the signing venue. Memory Keepers will have the chance to get their books signed without having to wait in line with the crowds. They will also receive a free Memory Keepers tee shirt to commemorate their involvement with the book tour.

In return for this opportunity, we're going to put you to work. Each Memory Keeper will be asked to help document the event in different ways. Some will take photos. Others will take notes and do a blog write-up for Dragonmount to share with the wider community. Some will hand out promotional materials to people standing in line. If the bookstore needs help organizing lines, one of the Memory Keepers will be there to help. If Harriet needs a glass of water, the Memory Keepers will be there to take care of that.

Another important task for some of the Memory Keepers will be to get involved on our message boards and on our Facebook group to help promote the event. We'll probably ask that each "regiment" of the Memory Keepers get together in person at the bookstore once before the event in order to work out logistics and delegate tasks. You'll be provided with a packet of more detailed guidelines once the teams are assembled.

How to Apply:

We are currently accepting applications. Click here and fill out the form to apply. You cannot apply more than once. You cannot serve as a Memory Keeper for more than one event in this tour, and we regret that we cannot choose you again if you were chosen as a Storm Leader or Tower Guard in previous years.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 PM (Pacific Standard Time) on December 7th. We will be contacting everyone via e-mail within a week of the deadline to let you know if you have been selected or not.

The information you've been waiting for is finally here! The following is a list of all the dates and locations for Brandon Sanderson's A Memory of Light signing tour. As usual, the tour will kick off with a midnight release party at the BYU Bookstore in Provo, UT. Festivities will conclude in Birmingham, AL.

You may notice a few things about this list. First of all, unlike last year's shorter tour, Brandon will be doing a full length tour this year. Second, this will be a split tour with some January dates and some February dates. Finally, some of the entries on this list say "to be confirmed" next to them. This just means that Tor is waiting for confirmation from those venues. We'll edit this list with updates when we receive them.

Also, just like the previous two tours, each site will have a select group of volunteer fans who will help run the show and document the event. These "Memory Keepers" will get a chance to meet with Brandon (and in some cases, Harriet McDougal Rigney) in private before the signing event. You can listen to chapter 2 on Tor.com's website.

A Memory of Light will be published on January 8, 2013 in hardcover and audiobook formats. It will be published as an eBook on April 9th.
