  1. The summer sun is fading as the year grows old And darker days are drawing near Rhya had pulled back the curtains with a distinct lack of hope that morning. Outside, the sky had been greeting the start of a new day with an impressive array of grey shades, along with a sort of smug heaviness that promised rain would be an all too likely outcome. Ten days ago, with torrential rain halting all but the most essential outdoor activities, she'd made the mistake of voicing boredom to Owen. She really should have known better. Spending the week in the salting rooms with the Sages had not been on her list of preferred things to do, but Owen had volunteered her services to Aislyn within the hour. Rhya hadn't had the heart to wriggle out of it after being faced with her friend's gratitude. She was cognisant of how vital such work would be in the coming months. Autumn was upon them already and without meat laid by, winter would be extremely hard in the mountains. She'd set to with the best will she could muster as all of the Sages took delighted turns at reminding her that many hands make light work. They'd finally finished the rather dull, repetitive chore the previous evening, so facing another waterlogged day had not filled her with enthusiasm. Thankfully, by mid morning the cloud cover had miraculously broken, allowing blue skies and a warm sun to break through. Much more the thing in Rhya's opinion and the main reason she was now striding towards the stables with a purposeful air and her gear slung over her shoulder. She wasn't about to hang around waiting to be handed any more random jobs. The large double doors to the stable block stood open, allowing fresh air to circulate, and several younger 'kin were busy mucking out or dealing with other odd jobs delayed by the weather. Exchanging brief nods and smiles with each of them, Rhya paused briefly at the entrance grimacing against the smell of manure which hadn't yet cleared. Even so the skin around her eyes relaxed in tandem with the tension flowing out of her shoulders. She loved the light and warmth in this building, with its lofty rafters, dust motes floating in the air, and the soft whickering of the horses accompanied by their occasional hoof stamps. With a sigh of pleasure and anticipation, Rhya abandoned her momentary reverie and was about to go find her own mount when a strong hand landed on her shoulder and she whirled around, startled. "Blood and bloody ashes, Lorelai! I thought it was Owen, come to drag me back to that confounded salting shed," she took a long calming breath, scowling slightly at her fellow Ranger's obvious amusement.
  2. ~ Granted, you only have two legs, but that doesn't mean you can't use them, black cub ~ Lorelai grumbled. Seth and herself were close to the stedding and it was a half day's walk away. But sadly Lorelai woke up with a cramp in her left leg which seemed to have made it a whole day's walk. It seemed the cold night did not agree with her. Seth was very polite and proper, walking in her pace. Yet Nightfall was less understanding. Unsurprisingly, at that. ~ What's the hurry? You got someone waiting for you, Nightfall? You naughty beast, you ~ Nightfall growled and gave Lorelai a long sharp glare. Lorelai avoided her eyes. Holding her stare would have required concentration she lacked at the moment, since it was being used for her merits to avoid the throbbing pain. It seemed like she'd be joining Seth in the visit at the Sage. A muscle relaxing ointment would definitely help. Lorelai just hoped it wouldn't smell too horrible. "Finally!". Lorelai gave Nightfall a look and turned to Seth. "Come Seth, follow me. We're home!". Lorelai led Seth into the Stedding. Nightfall parted ways, as she decided to go hunt on her own. "The first thing on the agenda is to get you to a Sage. Don't worry, it's routine. Just to make sure you're healthy and well. And I'll be right there with you as I need some treatment myself." Locating the infirmary, Lorelai led Seth in. Lorelai Ranger
  3. Night fell quickly. Lorelai dropped at her house to take the gear she needed for the gathering she was going to have with Speed. Last she saw of him she planned on meeting him the next day, but agreeing to go along with Owen, Susomo and John in search of Iris prevented her from setting the record straight very day. Now that they were back, though, Lorelai had every intention to. She was far from being forgetful. Picking up her bow, arrows and four flasks of whisky, she headed towards the shooting range. That's where she was supposed to meet with Speed to even the score. While she made her way there she couldn't help but think about Owen. He has always been dear to her. In a way, he was the only person she truly trusted. But he lost his trust in her and she was unsure if she still maintained hers in him. Arriving at the shooting range, Lorelai spotted Speed seated against a tree, his bow and arrows to his side. As she approached him he got up, smelling of confusion, yet curiosity seemed to pop out here and there. "Last time you were the last one standing. Lets put that to the test once again." Lorelai took out two flasks from her bag and threw them at Speed. "We shoot. If we hit the target, we have a sip. If we don't hit the target, well, it would probably mean we're not standing anymore, as I'm quite crafty with a bow and so are you, from what I've heard. Are you up for the challenge?". Lorelai Ranger _________________ Back to top Myth Joined: 24 Mar 2006 Location: what passes for civilization Posted: Sun May 13, 2007 1:21 pm Post subject: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speed wasn’t sure what this meeting was all about. In fact, he hadn’t seen Lorelai, as he had learned her name to be, at all since the day he had accidentally run into her several weeks ago. He wasn’t sure whether or not she had been avoiding him, but he had been so busy with his training that she’d almost slipped his mind completely. Still, he had shown up a bit early for their rendezvous, uncertain of what was in store but hoping to be up to the task. He stood as she arrived, and plucked the two flasks out of the air when she tossed them to him. A drinking game? He’d heard several of the older Wolfkin joke about drinking games, and had of course seen a few deep into their cups from time to time, but Owen frowned on him drinking any of the spirits. He had only sneaked a mug or two of ale in his entire stay in the stedding. He wasn’t sure what liquid was contained in the flasks that Lorelai had shared, but from the mischievous look in her eyes it was bound to be potent stuff. Smiling broadly with the impetuousness of exuberant youth, Speed answered the challenge. “You’re on.”
  4. Stifling a yawn Nightsfire blew out the candle on the nightstand beside his bed and let his head hit the pillow. After a hard day of training in the wilderness he looked forward to a good nights sleep and closed his eyes. The sound of crickets and other nocturnal creatures could be heard through his open window. A cool breeze blew through the room and within moments Nights drifted into a sound sleep. The mind often plays tricks when in the deep recesses of slumber and with the wolf dream one had to be careful. It seemed only moments from when he had closed his eyes that he was awoken by the sharp cries of men. Men it would seem preparing for battle. Sitting up Nights was sure for a moment he was still dreaming. His room was gone and in its place a field full of men armored and looking anxious surrounded him. ~Hurry Nightsfire rise this place smells of evil~ Turning his head Nights saw Quickening standing off a few feet away. The big grey wolf smelled worried. She was crouched low to the ground viewing the field around them with caution. Standing Nights looked around at the field of men staring off into the distance. ~What is this place Quickening.~ Quickening flooded his mind with visions of a time long past. Visions of ancient Mantheren and a battle that destroyed the magnificent kingdom and scattered its people. A battled that ended with a desperate stand in which the Aes Sedai Queen leveled the trolloc army with the one power killing herself in the process. ~How can I be in a battle that happened hundreds of years ago?~ Quickening had no answer for that. ~The others are here Nightsfire we must find them.~ Scanning the ranks of men the distant sound of fighting spread through the camp and the warning of trollocs approaching echoed in the distance. Others? Quickening showed Nights images of Owen and Janna and the other Wolfkin spread throughout the camp. She also showed him an image of a hill to the back of the camp where a regal woman stood watching over the field. A woman who had to be Aes Sedai and wore a crown on her head. She was surrounded by guards and her face was hardened in resolve. Relieved to find his sword beside him Nights quickly strapped it on his back as the sounds of battle drew closer. The men in the camp paid him no mind, in fact they almost seemed to not realize he was there. The guttural sound of trollocs began to mingle with the cries of men and Nights quickly darted off in search of his brothers and sister. Quickening ran beside him the hate the approaching trollocs filled her with radiated off her as they went. The sound of men and trollocs dying filled the air now and small pockets of the shadow spawn could be seen engaged in battle with the army. Nights could smell the desperation in the air as the enormous trolloc army poured over the river pushing the defenders further back. There were just too many of them and the end was already predetermined. What mattered now was finding his friends and trying to make sense of this madness. Surely this had to be the work of the dark one or at the very least one of the Forsaken. As he ran Nights kept low and ran in the direction Quickening had shown him the Queen to be located. The smell of blood and death mingled with the vile smell of the trollocs filled the field. With a growing sense of alarm Nigths searched for his friends as the trolloc hordes began to overcome the army pushing it further back. Fades came in view now driving the trollocs forward wanting a quick and deciding victory. Quickening snarled and turned toward one of the eyeless. ~No we must find the others.~ With great willpower the wolf turned away and the two resumed their hunt in earnest. Suddenly the low hill came in view surrounded by elite guards. The Queen stood in its center defiant as ever. ~Nightsfire Twisted Chime and Windracer.~ Sure enough the tracker leader was advancing toward the ring of guard with Wind in tow looking as uneasy as Nights was sure he did himself. Calling to her Nights ran to greet her and embraced her in a tight hug. “Thank the light I have found someone.†Just then a familiar head of white hair came in view and the keen eyes of Owen found Nights and Janna. Nights could not be sure but he thought the Ranger leader had others with him. “John and Janna to me!†The two ran toward Owen’s position and stopped. The field was in desperate straights now the trollocs advancing at will. Smoke drifted over the battle obscuring the lines as the group waited for the end that would come sooner rather than later. ooc: enjoy all more to come
  5. The moon above gave the forest a soft glow that was undisturbed but for the breeze whistling through the leaves. In the cool dark air, a thin mist covered the ground lazily moving in the breeze. But the moment was disrupted. None but someone accustomed to the forest would have noticed, it could only be told by the hush that fell over the birds and other animals in the area. Quietly, though not on purpose, a man walked into the clearing. Looking around for a moment he gave a satisfied nod and set his pack on the ground. As he rolled out his blanket another form walked into the clearing. With its eyes glowing in the moonlight, he gave a soft growl, staring at the man. He stiffened and looked behind him into the eyes of a large dark grey wolf. The low rumble grew into a full fledged growl, the wolf’s hind quarters crouching as if to leap. “Relax, Smoke, I will give you your dinner. Be careful, though…the others will think that I tamed you.†The dark skinned man crouched and tossed a small piece of meat to the wolf, which was quickly snapped from the ground and swallowed in one gulp. The wolf sniffed the air and walked over near the blanket on the ground and lay down next to it. With a small laugh, the man lay next to the wolf and slept. It was a fitful rest as it had been for the last few weeks. Images of a long ago love and a sense of imminent danger. He woke, as he had from the other dreams, with a sheen of sweat dripping from his forehead. The dreams disturbed him, it was not the dream he was accustomed to...not The Dream World...they seemed to be regular dreams. But he could not shake the feeling that they meant something. Which was why he was going back...back to a place he thought never to see again. A place that represented pain and betrayal. Would she remember him? ~Of course she will remember me. She may try to take my heart out, but I don’t think she would forget me. It has only been a couple years.~ He shook his head at himself and changed into fresh clothes (or as fresh as he had after his travels). He slipped his knife around his waist and threw his pack over his shoulder. After the morning sun reach it’s noonday height, He felt the cold familiar splash of walking through the barrier. He was back in the Stedding. Fear Gripped him again...and, for a moment, he was held by the terror of what he had fled...the lies...the... “No…I can’t let this happen†He whispered. He did not know what the dream meant...or if it meant anything at all. But, He still loved her, and if there was a chance that she was going to be harmed, he would still give his life for her. Even if it meant going through... ~Stop thinking about it and go in!~ *Smoke…Wait on the outskirts. I will call if I need you. Please stay out of sight and keep a low profile…I do not want to even be noticed if at all possible.* *You are still a pup, running up here to your she-wolf. There is either the dream or not and you were not in the Dream.* The man shook his head…this was a conversation he had with the wolf before, but he still could not shake the feeling that she would need him. Smoke gave a harrumph and trotted off the way they had come. Kare’el stood and looked again at the last hill before entering the main town. Then he took a breath and started walking. As he topped the rise, he crouched low, looking for the sentries that he knew would be watching. Carefully he found them. His old friend…the man who betrayed him, had taught him well. He scanned his surroundings and found a route that would serve him well. He might be seen, but he would likely be mistaken for one of the Wolfkin. Through the brush, he made his way into town, and though he was seen, a wave of the hand and a nod was all it had taken to make it past. The young man on duty, he hoped, would not be punished to severely for his mistake. The hardest part was upon him. Slowly, but trying not to be too careful so he wouldn't look suspicious, he made it through the town. Behind a house he had seen the betrayer off in the distance. Owen...training the recruits as usual. ~How could they?! Why would they let him live after... ~ he shook his head, He may have to confront the man yet, but he would not do it before he absolutely had to. He was here for one purpose only. To find Lorelai and help her. He made a wide circumference making his way to the only spot he had felt safe here. He was not especially worried about being recognized at a distance. He was nothing of the man he was two years ago. His had given up his long black hair to the Short dark hair he wore now, and though his skin was the same dark brown it had always been, his small wiry body was a tightly wound spring, compared to the soft weak man he had left as. His fine clothes that he had been so proud of had all been thrown to the fire. He was now clothed in the garb of a woodsman, for he had nobody he could trust, so he had left the world of man to roam with Smoke. His rough wool shirt and coarse trousers did not bother him…until he thought of her. But it did well to keep any from knowing him as the man who had left. He made it around the town and up the mountains…his plan was to stay in his spot and find Lorelai tomorrow...Tomorrow. OOC:Well Lorelai, Here is a start. I thought I would make my way to my spot on the mountainside and stay there, then find you. As you can see, I have changed a bit in my Physical appearance, but underneath it all, I am the same man who loved you. :) My Dream can be just my own unfinished business with you or a random fortelling of the future, your choice. Feel free to play with this…I will roll with whatever you come up with. You can even be in our spot and surprise me or…whatever you like. Anyway, On We go!!!
