  1. Like an omen the skies had been bleak and gray for days, making traveling monotonous. Sky, landscape, rivers and streams all seemed dull and shadowed and the mood seemed to rub off on Janna and her charge. They spoke little as they plodded closer and closer to the Mountains of Mist and the usual thrill Janna received on sighting them again was absent. They stopped only briefly in Baerlon for the Tracker was hesitant to leave the cubs in the woods on their own. And so despite the protests of her good friend and favorite trader, Mistress Hodge, they left the city the same day, well fed and re-supplied for their trek into the mountains. Even their beauty seemed dimmed by the gloomy weather and Janna’s depression deepened. It was a shame their newest Sister’s first impression of her new home would be so overshadowed. Janna yearned to show her the golden meadows scattered with wildflowers, the mighty leatherleafs and their green canopy and the hidden places in the mountains, spring fed waterfalls and hidden caves. She did point out several landmarks to Skylar – the rock face high overhead that looked vaguely like a man in profile, smoke from the miner’s camp several miles east, a high overhanging rock that looked ready to plunge into the ravine below it. All signs they were nearing their destination. The skies finally opened as they started up the trail that led into the Stedding. Rain poured down in sheets, instantly soaking all four of the weary travelers. Janna barely noticed the Ranger who signaled her from his post and her half hearted wave in return was stiff with cold. They hurried towards the Stedding, the village square empty in the rain. Houses were shut up tight against the storm with only the rims of the windows glowing with the warmth and light within. Though she wished she could dart to the nearest house and dry off a bit, it was strictly forbidden for any Wanderer to interact with the rest of the Stedding until they had been examined by a Sage. So instead she led Skylar across the square towards the Infirmary ducking inside the nearly empty building. Miryana sat next to the fire in the first room, stirring a pot of something that smelled of herbs and apples. Janna’s nose twitched as the Sage stood and hurried towards them. “Miryana, this is Skylar Rayne, our newest Wanderer.” Janna grinned as the two wet wolves bounded toward the fire, “And this is our newest brother, Cloud.” Janna Telenvar Twisted Chime Head Tracker ~ Wolfsister Companion to Silver
  2. The storm came hard and fast, swooping down on the unsuspecting Tracker and her companion with a fury that had Janna wondering if she’d offended the Creator in some way. Within moments her clothes were soaking, plastered against her like a second skin and she could barely see a few feet in front of her, despite her acute eyesight. Though harsh the rain was warm and to Janna’s surprise Silver was not afraid. The poor pup had an intense fear of storms, mostly the thunder, Silver would quiver and shake, press tightly against Janna and welcome soft strokes and comfort. But this storm was free of the dark rumblings and the flashes of lightning that followed. It actually felt…..welcoming. A warm balm, strong but safe. Wild but something to be trusted. Almost there Chime, just ahead….just…. The cub jumped against Janna, leaving muddy footprints on Janna’s trousers before she danced a bit further down the trail. Silver was ecstatic at having discovered a new Wanderer on her own, perhaps that’s why the storm did not frighten the young wolf. The Head Tracker watched with a smile as the cub sprinted ahead, her coat turned a light grey by the rain (not to mention the mud and the Creator knew what else she insisted on investigating and then rolling in). Janna shuddered to think what the wolf would smell like when she cuddled close later in the evening. Not that she minded. In fact, Silver had gone a long way to mending Janna’s broken heart over the loss of her beloved Wind. She snorted to think what the old wolf would say to being called beloved. He’d make a scathing remark about two-legs and the silly thing they called love….he’d brush it off with a sneeze and a superior stare. Sniffling a bit Janna reached out for Silver, felt her not far ahead and retreated. But the pup had felt her need, as she always did. Bounding back she ran at Janna full speed, head low and golden eyes intent, stopping only at the last moment to gracefully brace her front paws against the Tracker knees. Windracer would say he loves you, Chime. As I do. Janna dropped to her knees and cuddled Silver close, wet wolf smell and all. They sat frozen like that for several moments, until Silver’s slight wiggling shook the Tracker out of the past. They’re over the next hill, Chime! And he wants to play! If wolves could laugh out loud Silver did then, with a sharp bark as she bounded away, heart full of joy as she searched out her new Wanderer. Janna Telenvar Twisted Chime Head Tracker ~ Wolfsister Companion to Silver OOC: Janna is in her mid twenties, black hair worn in a tight braid (before she became a tracker she wove silver bells into her hair – hence the name). Her right arm is crippled, stunted since birth and she generally keeps it tucked tightly against her. Carries a crossbow specially made for her and a heavy pack. Silver is her new companion, a white pup, very young and enthusiastic – feel free to npc both as you need. ;) Welcome to the Wolfkin!
  3. Janna tossed restlessly in her bedroll, sending blankets asunder and crying softly in her sleep. Beside her Silver whined anxiously, tilting her head and watching her human companion grapple with the demons of the past. Dawn was still hours away and the young pup had a fair idea of what the Tracker dreamt. Chime would awaken bleary eyed and somber, memories of Wind a tangle. Two legged’s are so silly, the cub settled her head between her paws, golden eyes intent on Chime as she struggled. They know only today, cub. They live in the moment. Silver’s ears perked and she raised her head slowly. Beside her Windracer sat grooming himself, delicately licking his paws, and though transparent he exuded an unearthly glow. The cub pounced at him, startled when she tumbled on the ground without making any contact. The old wolf laughed and turned toward Chime, Aren’t you supposed to be guarding her? Silver regained her feet with as much dignity as she could muster, It’s so boring! The wolf cub huffed, She so much more fun when she’s awake. Windracer growled low in his throat and Silver hunched low, apologetic. She’s vulnerable when she sleeps, cub…you must protect her. For me. The old gray wolf approached Janna slowly, Silver a few steps behind. They both regarded the human with varying degrees of affection as she tossed and turned. Finally Wind bent low and nuzzled her neck. The Tracker sighed and relaxed suddenly, all the angst and tension gone, her sleep true and healing. Windracer gave her a last affectionate lick then turned to the cub, his golden eyes stern and intense. You must watch over her carefully, little one. Silver ducked her head, I will. It would be easier if you revealed yourself in the Dream. She won’t listen! The older wolf laughed again. Not yet…..and I have work for you. The cubs ears perked up once more and she listened and the image of the two legged became clear in her mind. They set out the next morning, Janna clear headed and well rested, the cub nearly falling over herself in her excitement. And you should see the way she catches rabbits! The silly things don’t stand a chance just **zing** and their caught! Janna let the cub chatter on as she considered how best to approach this new Wanderer. Silver said she was only just beginning the Howling…perhaps a straightforward meeting? Or should she wait for the newly made Wolfkin to approach her? The straightforward approach proved futile, the young woman was stealthy and avoided them at every turn. Finally Janna struck camp and let Silver do the looking, in the Dream. Hopefully their newest Sister would approach them. 4. She had kicked the covers to the floor where they lay in a tumbled heap while one leg and an arm hung limp off the side of the bed. Her breathing was deep, her face hidden by a curtain of dark curly hair. Windracer approached the bed sniffing cautiously. Janna was never in the best mood when first roused from sleep. Chime. A questioning grunt answered him before she rolled away, stuffing the pillow around her head. Chime She burrowed deeper into the corner one hand grasping blindly for the blanket she’d kicked away earlier. With a disgusted sneeze Windracer bounded onto the bed, his cold nose searching. Janna gasped and shot upright, “Wind!†Playfully he nudged her and as annoyed as she was she couldn’t resist the dancing light in his eye. Finding the spot that always itched she scratched sleepily, ducking her head to glance outside. “It’s the middle of the night and you suddenly want to play?†The gray wolf rolled onto his side, arching to give her better access. It is time. They wait for him. Blinking Janna stopped scratching abruptly and jumped from the bed. Windracer sighed, rolled over and rested his muzzle on his front paws, watching as she raced around the room dressing. He could sense Randon not far away, Eyota with him as ever. Hardpaws waited patiently with them and Windracers ears perked a bit as his anticipation grew. There would be singing, and dancing…and hunting. Janna had given up trying to braid her hair and instead stuffed it into an old and battered hat, giving her head a strange, lopsided look. Strapping on her equally ill treated backpack she turned to Wind with a teasing smile, “Aren’t you ready?†With a snort he jumped gracefully to the floor and followed her out the door. They walked in silence through the dark woods to the Stedding. No candles or lanterns were lit but Janna could sense Wolfkin awake behind the dark windows. She glanced up to the sky and the large full moon, unnaturally large and bright. Few could sleep easily beneath such a moon. A group of shadows separated from the dark and became Eyota and Wall, who both nodded gravely and matched her step for step as the approached the small cabin Eric Hammar had taken for his own. Pausing Janna reached up to knock but the door swung open before she could. “Eric….they are calling.†Janna Telenvar Head Tracker and Wolfsister Companion to Windracer ~Not all who wander are lost ~ OOC: Here’s the link to the Tracker website http://www.geocities.com/wolfkintrackers/ you’ll find an outline of the initiation there as well as guidelines for pickups and links to the bios I have atm (bad me mine’s not up there so…Janna is in her mid twenties, long dark hair (usually tightly braided), crippled left arm from birth. Originally from Arafel – Windracer is a crotchety old gray wolf. He always refers to Janna as Chime tho the other wolves call her Twisted Chime.) any question pm me!
  5. Janna narrowed her as eyes critically as she wiped the back of her hand across her sweaty brow, inadvertently smearing soil across her forehead. The autumn day was unseasonably warm but instead of bemoaning the heat Janna tipped her face towards the sun and let it wash over her, so few things warmed her these days. One of those few things bounded out of the forest toward her, white fur sprinkled with the fiery leaves of fall. Janna winced as she realized the cub held something furry and limp between her jaws. I caught it! I caught it! Silver deposited the dead rodent proudly near where Janna knelt in the long row of fennel. It was sooooo fast you wouldn’t believe it, Chime but I was faster and when it tried to run I grabbed it and shook it hard…. The young wolf tensed suddenly, catching a new scent on the breeze and leapt back toward the forest, unsettling several of the plants in the garden. Janna suppressed a groan and a giggle as she watched the hard work of the morning nearly undone. But the cub didn't notice, intent on new furry things to chase and....shake hard. Wryly she considered the corpse Silver had left behind. Poor thing, she thought with a sigh, at least you can help the plants grow.Surreptitiously and quickly she buried the baby squirrel amongst the rows of plants. A shadow fell across her just as she patted the soil into place over the tiny grave. Squinting upwards Janna smiled sheepishly, “It’s good to see you out and about, Anton. Any chance you could help repair the havoc Silver has wrought on the herb garden? If the whole thing isn't weeded by nightfall Miryana will have my hide.†Janna Telenvar Head Tracker and Wolf Sister Twisted Chime Companion to Silver OOC: Thanks for the list hun ;)
  6. Janna sighed as she watched Silver bound ahead, crisp Autumn leaves crunching beneath her paws as she followed the scent of a squirrel. So much for stealth, the Tracker thought with resignation. They were close enough to the Stedding that it shouldn’t matter. The Rangers knew they were approaching even without the young wolfs antics. Still, she’d have to rethink taking the cub with her in search of Wanderers, at least til she had grown a bit. Matured. Last night she had dreamt the strangest dream…of Windracer. He and Silver had been playing, wrestling with one another on the floor of her isolated cabin. Four times the size of the cub Wind had been tolerant and amused as he taught the young wolf to fight through playful nips and bites, finally holding the nearly white wolf down with one paw as he regarded Janna with what could only be called….a wolfish smile. She will learn. Janna had woken crying…something she had hidden from Anton. Her heart ached just thinking of the old wolf. The dream had been so vivid she’d wondered if it was the Dream. But that was impossible. Wind was dead and nothing could bring him back…except dreams. She shook off the thought and turned to her companion, “Do you recognize this place, Anton?†The Wanderer nodded, it hadn’t been that long ago he had visited the Stedding in pure human form. Janna motioned to the left, “My cabin is along this trail, if you ever have need of me.†“You don’t live within the Stedding?†Anton sounded slightly panicked but his emotions were a whirlwind…one moment strong and confident that he’d found his calling…the next fearful and confused that this was all in his head…a hallucination. Janna shrugged, “I don’t like being penned in, cities and villages make me….nervous. I prefer to be….outside.†When she had left the Stedding nearly a month ago the trail to the village had been nigh untraceable. Now, however a clear path showed the way and Janna cringed. They tried to vary the trails, so none became too obvious but it appeared everyone and his brother had utilized this path since her departure. She’d speak with John and Owen about that at the first opportunity. Leading Anton off the main trail she approached the Stedding from the east, through dense woods and brush. Still, within a hundred yards of the Stedding itself a Ranger stepped from behind a tree, crossbow aimed directly at them. He lowered it immediately as he recognized Janna. With a nod he stepped back and vanished, casting a tolerant glance at Silver who was triumphant at having sniffed him out. A bit late…but she has a good nose. Ha! I found him Chime! Did you see that? I found him and he’s a Ranger but I still found him.. Janna agreed with her thoughts, hoping to quiet the cub some, Anton was still very sensitive to the thoughts and emotions of wolves around him. And there were many wolves here…both in the Stedding and outside of it, roaming the hills and mountains. Best to keep Silver’s chatter to a minimum. With an encouraging smile she sent the wolf ahead, to warn the Sages of their arrival….though they already knew. She pushed aside a heavy branch and turned to smile back at her charge, “We’re here.†They stepped into a clearing, natural but expanded by the Woflkin to accomadate their growing numbers. The Inn towered over the center of the small community and it was a bustle of activity at this time of day. Women and children surrounded the well, gossiping and playing. They greeted Janna as she and Anton passed but kept well back at her warning glance. It was custom that a Wanderer only be greeted once the Sages had seen to him or her. The Infirmary was larger than its predecessor, which had been leveled by fire. Janna grimaced to remember that night. Aurin’s grief had nearly cost them all…..not Aurin…Eyota, she reminded herself gruffly. As she approached the entrance a young girl, perhaps fourteen summers darted out and dropped an awkward curtsey. “Hail, Tracker, Wanderer. Miryana awaits you within.†Janna bit back a smile and thanked the girl solemnly, leading Anton into the building. Several others waited in the large entrance, one man with a runny nose and red eyes…a girl heavily pregnant….a mother clutching her fevered child. Janna greeted them all by name and motioned Anton to a chair nearby. “Miryana will be here soon. We need to be sure The Howling hasn’t….affected you adversely.†Even as she said the words Janna shuddered, hopeful she had brought Anton to the Sage soon enough. “Don’t worry Anton, we’re only here to help you.†Janna Telenvar Head Tracker Wolf Sister Twisted Chime Companion to Silver OOC: Post your reaction to arrival at the Stedding and Miryana will post after checking you out ;) After I'll open the thread to everyone for a meet and greet.
  7. It had been a week since the wolves had started following him. Feeding the roaring blaze before him, even Anton Averdal's frantic industry couldn't hide the fact that he was bone tired. After parting ways with certain woman and taking to the road by himself in Tarabon, he'd begun to notice that he wasn't alone. Wolves, wherever he went they followed and had done so for over a week now. That in itself was not cause for the trouble which Anton felt, his time in the Wolfkin Stedding had given him a chance to learn more about the wolves, and he knew he they wouldn't attack him. No, that wasn't what had led him to a small ravine in the hills north of Elmora. If he were simply prey that would be far easier. Dark clouds rolling over windswept plains. Wincing as he staggered forward back a step, Anton shook his head as if it would rid himself of what plagued him. They were touching his mind, whenever he thought he was alone they did it. Or he was going mad, he wasn't sure anymore. He would find himself thinking thoughts that were not his, feeling emotions that were someone else's. With it always came the presence, he knew it was the wolves that followed him. With his eyes opened in the Stedding so long ago it was impossible not to acknowledge what was happening. That knowledge was proving little comfort though, not with the wolves sifting through his mind, picking out his thoughts and his memories at seeming random. With them putting their thoughts in his head, their feelings, their being it wa- Warmth running down jaws, last quiver as prey passes on, scrabbling on moss and lichen to water pool, wind whistling and leaves rustling amongst great oaks. Collapsing to his knees as he clutched his head, a groan escaped him as he fought the surge of images and emotions that bombarded him. Mind racing with foreign thoughts, Anton clawed onto his sense of self as best he could, as if he were holding onto a log that was being swept down a mighty river. Sweat poured from his face and his forehead was furrowed with strain even as he attempted to weather the worst of it. Paws that have known; snow, grass, sand, rock, stone, river and salt waters from many different ranges. Farpaw. Anton howled. Anton Averdal Howling
  8. Stifling a yawn Nightsfire blew out the candle on the nightstand beside his bed and let his head hit the pillow. After a hard day of training in the wilderness he looked forward to a good nights sleep and closed his eyes. The sound of crickets and other nocturnal creatures could be heard through his open window. A cool breeze blew through the room and within moments Nights drifted into a sound sleep. The mind often plays tricks when in the deep recesses of slumber and with the wolf dream one had to be careful. It seemed only moments from when he had closed his eyes that he was awoken by the sharp cries of men. Men it would seem preparing for battle. Sitting up Nights was sure for a moment he was still dreaming. His room was gone and in its place a field full of men armored and looking anxious surrounded him. ~Hurry Nightsfire rise this place smells of evil~ Turning his head Nights saw Quickening standing off a few feet away. The big grey wolf smelled worried. She was crouched low to the ground viewing the field around them with caution. Standing Nights looked around at the field of men staring off into the distance. ~What is this place Quickening.~ Quickening flooded his mind with visions of a time long past. Visions of ancient Mantheren and a battle that destroyed the magnificent kingdom and scattered its people. A battled that ended with a desperate stand in which the Aes Sedai Queen leveled the trolloc army with the one power killing herself in the process. ~How can I be in a battle that happened hundreds of years ago?~ Quickening had no answer for that. ~The others are here Nightsfire we must find them.~ Scanning the ranks of men the distant sound of fighting spread through the camp and the warning of trollocs approaching echoed in the distance. Others? Quickening showed Nights images of Owen and Janna and the other Wolfkin spread throughout the camp. She also showed him an image of a hill to the back of the camp where a regal woman stood watching over the field. A woman who had to be Aes Sedai and wore a crown on her head. She was surrounded by guards and her face was hardened in resolve. Relieved to find his sword beside him Nights quickly strapped it on his back as the sounds of battle drew closer. The men in the camp paid him no mind, in fact they almost seemed to not realize he was there. The guttural sound of trollocs began to mingle with the cries of men and Nights quickly darted off in search of his brothers and sister. Quickening ran beside him the hate the approaching trollocs filled her with radiated off her as they went. The sound of men and trollocs dying filled the air now and small pockets of the shadow spawn could be seen engaged in battle with the army. Nights could smell the desperation in the air as the enormous trolloc army poured over the river pushing the defenders further back. There were just too many of them and the end was already predetermined. What mattered now was finding his friends and trying to make sense of this madness. Surely this had to be the work of the dark one or at the very least one of the Forsaken. As he ran Nights kept low and ran in the direction Quickening had shown him the Queen to be located. The smell of blood and death mingled with the vile smell of the trollocs filled the field. With a growing sense of alarm Nigths searched for his friends as the trolloc hordes began to overcome the army pushing it further back. Fades came in view now driving the trollocs forward wanting a quick and deciding victory. Quickening snarled and turned toward one of the eyeless. ~No we must find the others.~ With great willpower the wolf turned away and the two resumed their hunt in earnest. Suddenly the low hill came in view surrounded by elite guards. The Queen stood in its center defiant as ever. ~Nightsfire Twisted Chime and Windracer.~ Sure enough the tracker leader was advancing toward the ring of guard with Wind in tow looking as uneasy as Nights was sure he did himself. Calling to her Nights ran to greet her and embraced her in a tight hug. “Thank the light I have found someone.†Just then a familiar head of white hair came in view and the keen eyes of Owen found Nights and Janna. Nights could not be sure but he thought the Ranger leader had others with him. “John and Janna to me!†The two ran toward Owen’s position and stopped. The field was in desperate straights now the trollocs advancing at will. Smoke drifted over the battle obscuring the lines as the group waited for the end that would come sooner rather than later. ooc: enjoy all more to come
  9. The sun reflected off the water sharply, and Janna turned away from the lake a bit as she bent over her fishing rod. Biting her lip she struggled to hold the thin line and tie on the bit of fluff and ribbon she had salvaged from the debris pile behind the Inn. Her smaller, stunted arm was awkward but she had long ago learned to discount it. She held the line down with her bad arm using the other to twist the line round her lure. Eyes narrowing she huffed out a breath as the knot took hold and tightened it quickly. Beside her Windracer yawned and rolled over in the warm yellow grass. You two-legged’s have the oddest notions about fishing. His tongue lolled out playfully and not for the first time she suspected he was laughing – at her, at humans in general, at life. Fish tastes better caught in your jaws, Chime. Since my mouth is no where near as big as yours this will have to do, she laughed at the flash of surprise in his golden eyes and turned to the lake. With a motion borne of much practice she flicked the end of her line into the water and leaned back against the moss covered stone. Expertly she lodged one end of the rod between her twisted left arm and her hip and sat watching the surface of the water. Dragonflies droned an afternoon lullaby as they darted amidst the reeds, their wings casting rainbows in their wake. A waterbug darted around Janna’s line, seeming to dance with the bit of fluff for a moment before zipping off again. Birds of every shape and size lit quickly from one tree to the next, some diving down to the surface of the lake for a quick dip. The sun was warm and golden, high overhead and soon a soft snoring joined the birdsong. Glancing aside Janna smiled indulgently at Wind, sprawled on his back with his paws twitching in the air as he chased some rabbit in his dreams. He whined a bit and she reached out with her good hand, ruffling the fur beneath his chin until he quieted, paws still trembling occasionally as he pursued his dream quarry. She had planned to fish the afternoon away, returning to her small cabin with supper and a quiet night by the fire. But even as her future supper tugged sharply on the fishing line a scent caught her attention. She paused, the fish still dangling over the glittering surface of the lake, twisting and turning on the line. Eyota, she surmised, with a Wanderer in tow. Neatly she flipped the fish to the shore and cut the line from the rod. All her hard work at tying the lure was for naught but at least she had her supper. Tucking the rod next to the rock (her favorite fishing spot) she gently shook Windracer awake and nodded toward the eastern rise. He jumped up immediately and ran toward it, eager to see both Eyota and Random, Janna not far behind with the fish hanging from her crippled hand. Eyota topped the rise looking tired, but his eyes warmed as he caught site of the gray wolf lopping toward him. The girl hung back a bit, eyes wide and clutching a small bundle to her chest. When Windracer stepped forward to sniff at her skirts she started slightly and then again when Janna spoke. “Welcome home, Eyota,†it was still a struggle for her to not call him Aurin but she was getting better. “I see you’ve brought us a new Wanderer.†“Janna Telenvar this is Odette Rachma lately of Saldea.†He beamed at his newest charge and Janna felt a flash of jealousy. That was completely ridiculous of course, she considered Eyota a brother. Didn’t she? Though Randon cocked his head at her curiously, Aurin seemed oblivious. “You two should become fast friends, both being from the Borderlands.†Irrationally she didn’t want to be anything to this slip of a girl, let alone a friend. Still as Head Tracker it was her duty to make new Wanderer’s feel welcome after all. She held her good hand out and tried to smile, “Welcome to the Stedding, Odette. If your headed to the Infirmary I’ll come along.†Turning to Aurin she began to relate what had happened in the Stedding during his absence. Janna Telenvar Twisted Chime Head Tracker and Wolfsister Companion to Windracer OOC: Odette if you can rp your reaction and then arriving in the Stedding to see the Sages we’ll prod Steve to post next as Miryana.
