  1. As they left the Mistress of Novice's room behind them, Adaira was still a bit dazed. Now she truly was a novice, with white dresses and everything. Dragging her saddlebags with her she followed Aramina Sedai down to one of the corridors leading to the first floor and the Novice Quarters. There the corridors were bare of all ornaments, walls painted white and only the Ajah coloured floor tiles bringing some interest to the place. Behind a closed door she could hear woman's laughter and on the other side, where the door was wide open, she could see a girl maybe a little younger than her sitting on the bed and reading. Finally Aramina stopped before one of the doors. "Would you prefer to unpack now, or shall I show you around the Tower?"

"I think I'd like to make a little tour around the Tower, Aramina Sedai," Adaira said with a smile. "I think my unpacking can wait alittle while, and I'd feel more comfortable if I knew the Tower and it's surroundings better. I think I need to change into the white dress, though." Gathering all her belongings into one hand, she opened the door and stepped inside.

Inside the room she could see it was made to accomodate three persons. There were everything three; three beds, three washstands, three little closets and even three water pitchers. All of them were more or less missmatched, but none of them were broken or in bad shape. Choosing the bed on the far right, she put her bags at the foot of it and started changing her clothes. She knew Aramina Sedai didn't like waiting, and besides, she was impatient to see more of the Tower. So far, the room looked empty so she didn't think anyone would touch her things while she was gone.

The white dress she was now wearing was of good quality and probably wouldn't tear easily, but it wasn't even near as fine as she was used to. But then, all the other girls she had seen used the same kind of dresses and they didn't complain, so she wouldn't start now. No, not now when Aramina Sedai was waiting and probably just wanted to get rid of her. Adaira had noticed the slight look of vexation on the Aes Sedai's face when Faerzyne Sedai had given her a new burden, Adaira's mentoring. She could only hope to be worth of the time and attention Aramina Sedai had given her already.

Combing her hair quickly and hastening to the door Adaira realized that she had no idea where to go and what to do after the tour. I guess I'll find out, eventually... Now it was time to see a little more of this new home of hers.

  2. This is too good to be true, a whole afternoon to myself before the evening class! Adaira was thinking to herself. The whole day she had run from task to task and with all the classes in between, she had hardly had time to eat. On the way to the garden where she had planned to spend those few hours of free time before her next class she was stopped by one of the Aes Sedai. She had seen the woman watching her and tried to hurry past, but for some reason the woman was determinated to take her. As she rose from her curtsey the Aes Sedai cupped her face between her hands and seemed to be extremely interested in her face and features. Muttering something incomprehensible about proportions and fabrics she finally let Adaira go with a smile on her lips.

"Yes, you will do just finely, child. ... I am Caillie Sedai and I have something for you to do if you have nothing else right now." So there goes my freetime... Adaira sighed and turned to follow Callie Sedai to her rooms. Of course, the novices were kept busy for their own good (so that they'd have no time for pranks or thoughts about running away), but still, it would have been nice to have a little while when she could have done as she pleased. And now... Usually the tasks given by Aes Sedai to novices included dusting, cleaning up dirty clothes and dishes and all kinds of nasty domestic homework which most novices didn't like at all. Adaira was no exception.

They made their way upstairs to the Brown quarters in silence, Callie Sedai was clearly deep in her thoughts and Adaira didn't dare to ask what was the reason for her interest. Inside the room she could see that the woman was Brown to boot (or slipper, in this case). The room was filled with books and beautiful artwork, all set to highlight beautiful colours and lines of the furniture and ornaments. Even the piles of books were like works of art, there to give an impression of orderly neglect.

"There, that is your task. I need you to grind paint materials in a mortar and mix paints for me. Then you will sit as a my model as I am going to paint you. I'm certain that your mother taught you to mix skin paints, no? And a painting of you has been made for potential suitors, so posing isn't completely unfamiliar to you, correct? Did your mother and seamstress determine what are the best colours for you?"

Adaira couldn't hide her amazement. A portrait of her? Posing for Callie Sedai was to be her task? Slowly she walked to the desk where the jars and brushes lay and started picking some of the jars up and open them to see what was inside. Different colours, all colours imaginable. Of course she had been taught to mix skin paints, but that was complitely different! With the skin paints there were only a few basic mixes to do and then it was ready. With all these colours one could paint everything and not only shades of skin. Besides, she had never painted canvas. It could be nothing like painting lips, for example. Finally she chose some deep green to be mixed with a shade of blue so that she got forest green. Not the green of these southern forests, but the colour of pines in Saldaea and other Borderlands. Next she took some from the big jar full of white and added to it some colour so it was more like golden cream.

While she added some other colours next to those two she found herself remembering the painting of her first portrait. It had been an awkward situation, she had been almost 15 and absolutely loathed the painter. For some reason his gaze had made her very uncomfortable and selfconscious and the final result had been a disappointment. What a waste of their monies that had been, especially since she'd never get any suitors now, here in the Tower.

Finally done with the colours, Adaira tried to think if there was still some shade she had forgotten. Sighing to herself she couldn't do much else but wait for the next instructions and looked at Callie Sedai if she had something to say. Putting all the jars down and closing them so that they didn't dry, she tried to imagine what kind of portrait this one would be. If Callie Sedai had really painted all the paintings hanging on the walls, Adaira could say that she was quite a good painter. In fact, this might prove to be very interesting experience yet.

  3. Adaira watched the hand writing the questions down with something close to awe. Her name would really be there, written with black ink in that big book with all the other women who had come to the Tower and been tested acceptable. Maybe even Aramina Sedai's name could be found on one of those pages.

“Welcome to the White Tower.†Faerzyne Sedai said with a little smile, and looked up at Adaira. She could see that the Aes Sedai was clearly evaluating her and what probably wondering what she would become. But then, she was wondering that herself. They hadn't talked much with Aramina Sedai about what would happen when they reached the Tower, so she didn't quite know what to do next. As little as she liked it she couldn't do much else but wait for the Aes Sedai to tell her what to do. Well, I guess I'll be doing a lot of that for the next few years. But I'm here! I'm actually here, in the White Tower and studying to become Aes Sedai myself! Adaira couldn't help smiling a little.

  4. Adaira almost had to run behind Aramina, so fast she walked. It seemed the Aes Sedai was just as eager to get this done quickly as she was. The hallways and the floors were all decorated with different coloured tiles, the colours of the Ajahs. She could see a young woman coming out of one of the doors and dashing to the other direction than they were coming. A moment later they stopped by the same door the woman had come. Knocking, Aramina frowned at the door and Adaira couldn't help but think what kind of a room (or a person) waited them on the other side.

Suddenly Aramina Sedai turned towards her and smiled a little. "I think I'd like it if you came to visit, from time to time, Adaira." she said, "I'll be here if you need any help, but I would like to know that you are well also." Adaira smiled too and thought that it would be a relief to know at least one person in this huge, complex society inside the Tower, and she had promised to help her too.

“Enter.†a voice said on the other side of the door and it swung open. There were no-one there opening it, though, the only person in the room was a woman sitting behind a wooden desk. “My name is Faerzyne Grigory, and I am the Mistress of Novices here at the Tower. How can I help you?†Adaira glanced at Aramina Sedai. She wasn't sure at all what to say and besides, it wouldn't be proper to speak before Aes Sedai.

OOC: *pokes the thread* not dead yet? :P sorry for the delay... *sigh*

  5. The closer they got to the Tower, the bigger it looked. Anywhere she looked, Adaira could see the huge spire looming all over the palaces and storehouses of the city. There were people everywhere, from all countries and areas of land. Every once in a while she would catch a glimpse of Aes Sedai with their ageless looking faces, Warders trailing behind. All houses and balconies were beautifully decorated and and she could see bridges crossing the streets overhead. Behind the buildings there were trees, and at the end of one street there was a huge garden, Ogier Grove, or so Aramina Sedai had called it when Adaira'd asked.

"Come Adaira. Let us get you enrolled in the Tower."

When they finally reached the gates of the Tower, Adaira was so awed by everything she had seen that she didn't even notice it at first. Looking around, she finally saw what lay inside the Tower's walls. Women everywhere. Well, there were some men as well, but not even near as many as there were women. Besides, all the women walked their backs straight, with pride. You couldn't but notice them. Most of them wore some kind of white dresses, some wore a white dress with colorful stripes at the hem and they all seemed to be hurrying. The exception was the Aes Sedai, who walked past serenely discussing in small groups.

Inside the Tower Aramina Sedai walked determinately past curtseying novices and servants. "We need to take you to the Mistress of Novice now." she said and set a fast pace towards one of the corridors. "You will do well here, I think. Remember to pay attention and listen well in your classes and don't get sent too often into the Mistress of Novice's office." Adaira listened silently and followed her as quickly as she could.

  6. Back in the saddle, Adaira thought sighing as she climbed on her horse. The mare was a beautiful animal, and very calm besides. So far, the journey had gone well but she knew she'd be glad to not to be riding again. The sun was just coming up, as Aramina Sedai had wanted to be on road early so they would reach their destination very soon. It looked like a beautiful day. The last day of my freedom, Adaira thought ruefully, but smiled at the thought right after. No, not a prison, she wouldn't let it be that. This was what she had always wanted, to do something else, to see other places, and now she was doing just that. Even if it was going to be hard, she would remember her promise to herself and not give up.

They rode in silence for a good part of the morning and soon after, they were already able to see the shining walls of Tar Valon, and in the middle of it all the Tower itself. It was truly a magnificient sight, at least to Adaira who hadn't even seen anything besides her home city. The white walls glowed in the morning light, and the birds were flying all over the Alindrelle Erinin and the boats were sailing up and down the river. Soon they would reach the nearest village, Jualdhe, and cross the bridge to Tar Valon. The Tower must be HUGE to look so tall even this far away. I wonder, what does the world look like from the top of it? What does the Tower look like from inside? Well, soon enough she would find out.

  7. You'll have a deckhand in Shainan. ;) She needs some more practice and a place to start anew! :D

I think she's not of the clan the rest of the Sundancer crew is... I mean, that way you can mock her even more. ;)

  8. They rode on in silence as Adaira was contemplating everything Aramina Sedai had said so far. Maybe it was a brave thing to leave her home, but she had never really even thought about not leaving. It had seemed a right thing to do from the beginning, so why worry about it? She didn't really know what to expect from her future in the Tower, except hard work studying and chores from what Aramina Sedai had told her. It should be interesting to see if it was close at all to what she had imagined. Well, tomorrow she would find out, and that was soon enough.

Dragonmount on their right cast a huge shadow over the land as the sun was going down already. Adaira could see the village where they would be spending the night, and she was glad. Eventhough they had been traveling for weeks, she wasn't quite used to riding yet and she was getting tired. Oh yes, it would be good to sleep in a good bed tonight.

  9. From the way Aramina Sedai described Tar Valon, Adaira knew it must be a wonderful place, one of the miracles in the world for an Aes Sedai to describe it so. The Aes Sedai were such wonders themselves, and a city full of them! All the cultures and knowledge in one place... Adaira knew then that if Tar Valon was anything like she had heard in the stories and from the merchants, she would be very glad to spend the rest of her life in such a place. Well, maybe not the rest of her life, she still wanted to travel around, but she knew she would like living among all those opportunities for a curious mind. Would she do well at the Tower like Aramina Sedai said? She hoped so. Adaira knew she wasn't the headstrongest of all people, but she had her principles on which she was ready to held tight. She wouldn't mess up this miraculous chance she had got, and she would do anything to achieve her goals. Eventhough it didn't seem like it most of the time, Adaire knew she could be ambitious and work hard for the things she thought important, like this training at the White Tower. She very seldom said anything against people who were important to her (like her mother), but she could do that if she wanted. She just hoped she wouldn't ever have to because it made her feel so uncomfortable.

"Do you think you will find what you are looking for here? Adventure is not always known to a Sister, especially outside the Green Ajah. Some Sisters never leave the walls of the Tower. Do you seek adventure? Or do you seek something more?"

Adaira thought for a little while before answering. "Adventure is something I know nothing of, Aramina Sedai, unless you count this trip as one. My life at Bandar Eban wasn't very exciting even at its best, so in a way I'm glad to get away of it all. Battles and wars and such are not for me, I think, but I would like to travel more and see the world. There are so many marvelous places I couldn't even dream of, and I'd like to see some of those some day... But I guess I'll have to wait until I've finished my training at the Tower, won't I?" She kept a little pause before she continued with a frown. "But then, I'm also interested in seeking knowledge and learning new things, so I don't think life in the Tower will be too hard in that matter. It's just the rest of it I'm worried about. I'm curious about many things, but not very brave. I've never been very comfortable around new people and where I'm going now, I'll know nobody there. I just hope I'll be able to make a friend or two and that things don't get too hard... I know it won't be easy, but I wouldn't like to give up either, not when there's almost my whole life at stake. I really hope I'll do well."

OOC: Sorry for the delay, I've been busy with school and everything... I should be around more from now on, though! :D

  11. It was truly a beautiful day. Adaira had been riding for many days now over the countryside with Aramina Sedai, and she still found it marvellous to see nature all around her. They had ridden through several cities as well, but it was the countryside which stuck to Adaira's mind. That was something she had never really seen, or paid attention to, but now now she was looking around her and marveling at the beauty of it all.

She had never ridden before this trip, but she had learned fast. She had had to, as they had no options but to ride. By now, she was over the most of saddle soreness, but she still remembered all too well those first days of their journay. It didn't help when Aramina Sedai had laughed and told her that ill behaving novices were punished with a hard soled slipper in order to 'build their character' as she called it, and it felt pretty much like the way she felt now. Adaira had never been an unruly child, but she decided to behave as well as she just could at the Tower. Even the thought of being punished by the Aes Sedai frightened her.

All things considered, the journey had gone well. They had stopped at various inns and in some them there had been even dancing and singing. She hadn't known the Aes Sedai danced until she had seen Aramina Sedai among the crowd laughing just as hard as anyone in the room. The next morning, though, she had looked just as orderly and even severe as always. Adaira still had hard time believing that she actually was on her way to the Tower and soon she would be studying to become an Aes Sedai. It had been hard, harder than anything she had ever done, to leave her family, but she thought it would be worth it. If she had stayed at home, sooner or later she would have eloped with some adventurer or done something just as inconsiderate out of frustration. It probably was better this way. But still.. She'd miss Michan, her little brother, and her mother of course.

"You'll write to me, Ada, won't you?" Her brother had said clinging to her arms. "And when I'm all grown up, and I'm traveling for mother all around the world, I'll come and visit you! Wouldn't that be nice? I want to see Tar Valon one day too!" Adaira had laughed and hugged Michan saying: "Of course it would be nice, and I'd love to see you come! But from what Aramina Sedai told me about my studies, by the time you're 'all grown up' I have hardly started my studies! I'll be glad if I'm even Accepted by then." Her brother had frowned and said: "Ada, then you must write long letters to me, and tell me when I can come to visit... No matter if I'm old enough to be a grandfather by then!"

They had all laughed at that, but Adaira wasn't sure how much there was reason for laughing. She really would miss her family, ad she wasn't sure just how long it would be until she could see them again... Maybe never.

Her brooding thoughts were interrupted by Aramina Sedai's voice. "What do you think of the world so far, Adaira Tamrinin?"

"I like it very much, Aramina Sedai" she said with a smile. "Of course I've always known there is the whole world outside Bandar Eban, but it seems so big when you're travling like this! The landscape is so different, there are birds and animals and plants I've never seen before... And now that I'm able to ride this horse more comfortably than in the beginning, I can spend more time looking around. I really loved the Borderland cities. They are so beautiful and built with such an elegance! Life is so different near the Blight... and no doubt it's even more different elsewhere."

She remembered how she had felt when they had first ridden to Maradon. While it was about the size of Bandar Eban, it was so different in shape and architecture. She was very excited about all this traveling, but at the same time a little afraid. What would life in Tar Valon be like? What would they think of her, what did they expect? While traveling with Aramina Sedai she had become convinced that if she only could, she would become an Aes Sedai one day. Aramina Sedai looked so formidable, so admirable a woman that Adaira wished she could some day be like her.

"Aramina Sedai, is Tar Valon really so beautiful a place like they tell in the stories?"

  12. Adair looked at the Aes Sedai as the smile brightened her face. She really loves the Tower, she thought. If it really was worth everything she would have to give up, and she would look as happy and proud as Aramina Sedai when she spoke of the Tower, Adaira was sure she didn't mind it that much. She would surely have many marvelous and exciting experiences while in Tar valon.

"Being in the White tower? As a Novice, you understand, it is hard. You learn to do as you are told and you study hard. If you reach the ranks of the Accepted, you have more liberties, but you study even harder. And to be Aes Sedai, it is a great honor and achievment to walk the halls where so many great women have walked before me."

She knew it would be hard. That was one thing her mother had never really understood, that learning was as demanding as any work, even more so because you needed so much concentration if you wanted studying to be effective.

"Of course I'll keep my silence, Aes Sedai. May I go now?" she asked anxiously. "My mother must be very worried about me by now, and with such a great news..." She dropped a little curtsey, and headed for the door. Her mother would never believe what had happened to her today...

  13. Adaira didn't know what to think, she just knew something great was happening. "It seems I was right. You have the ability to learn to channel." Those words had already changed her life completely from everything she had ever known before, she just didn't know yet how exactly. The whole thing was still something unreal, something she really didn't understand and believe in yet, as if she'd soon wake up from a pleasant but very weird dream. And if it really was true for some reason (and it had to be, the Aes Sedai never lied!), she really could learn to channel. To become one of them, one of those wonderful, powerful, proud women would be something unimaginable, and as fast as this all had happened she was now sure she wanted nothing more than to be able to channel one day.

"I should be in town a few days longer. When my business is concluded here, you can accompany me back to the White Tower." So she would have at least a few days with her family before she had to leave and she was grateful for the chance to say proper goodbyes to her family and friends. But then, that would also make it harder... to know she'd have to go in a few days and maybe never see them again. That also made her very sad. Oh well, no use in lingering in those thoughts as there's nothing I can do about it anyway... I can always write letters at least, and maybe I could even come to visit sometimes... That was something to worry about later, she knew. She should have been home long ago, and her mother would be very worried if she didn't show up soon. But she still had one more question before she could go.

"Aramina Sedai? What is it like, living at the Tower and becoming an Aes Sedai?"

  14. "I think, Adaira Tamrinin, that you may be one of the few girls that are lucky enough to learn to wield the One Power. Are you willing to try?"

Aramina Sedai looked at her like a hawk closing on its prey. Adaira had heard so many stories and rumours about Aes Sedai, some of them funny and some of them just very frightening, that she didn't know what to make of it. Some said the Aes Sedai were Dark One's witches and responsible for breaking the world while the others said they did marvelous things with the One Power and fought against Shadow even harder than any army in the Borderlands. And they knew things, everybody knew the Aes Sedai had more books and knowledge than all the other libraries combined.

And now... She might be able to become one of them. To learn to channel was something Adaira had never even dreamed of, not in her wildest dreams! So was she willing to try? She wasn't sure. It would mean leaving her family and the life she had here and moving to the Tower... On the other hand, she had always wanted something more and if this wasn't a chance to get that extraordinary life, then what was?

Well, I can always try, she thought and made her decision. "Yes, Aramina Sedai. I'd like to try."

She tried a little smile and wasn't sure if she succeeded or not. Her hands were trembling a bit, but she felt content. Light willing, she might have this chance to change her life for good, and if she failed, she'd know she had tried at least.

"So, what do I have to do?"

  15. "One moment more please. I won't keep you long, I promise."

Her mother would kill her, Adaira was sure of that. Frowning, she saw the woman walk into the inn, so she had no options but to follow. What did the woman want?

Inside, they got a room and Adaira took a seat at the end of the large bed in the middle of the room. As she turned to face the woman, she heard her say:

"I have been in town on other business, but I couldn't help but notice something about you as I walked past you. I think we have something in common, you and I. I would like to test you to see if it's true. My name is Aramina sur Dulciena, Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah."

An Aes Sedai? Well, that explained a lot... But what would an Aes Sedai want from her? She was nothing, and even less to the Aes Sedai. And she had said something about testing too...

"My name is Adaira Tamrinin, Aes Sedai... A test for what? Is there something wrong with me?"

  16. Adaira knew she should have seen her coming. Instead, she almost stumbled on the woman and scattered all the papers she had been carrying all over the street. Angry at herself, she knelt to pick them up and hoped none of them were too stained from all the mud or her mother would kill her... Those were VERY important papers, she knew. Oh well, there's nothing I can do, except pick them up as soon as I can, she thought and sighed. As she was coming to her feet again, she heard the woman say "Excuse me child. I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time. I'm trying to find an inn called the Wandering Ways. Could you direct me?" Child? She knew she was short, and for that most people thought her to be much younger than she actually was, but the woman before her wasn't that much taller than her. Only then she realized that the woman had asked for directions as well.

"Wandering Ways? Uhmm... It's almost right around the corner... Just turn left here and walk to the main street and the turn right, the inn should be right there. In fact, I guess I could come and show you the way... Wandering Ways is easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for." I just hope mother won't be too mad at me if I'm late for dinner... And she turned to lead the way hoping the woman would follow her closely. Even on her homestreet accidents happened, cutpurses did their work and with all the people you could get lost very easily.

As they walked towards Wandering Ways, Adaira became sure the woman behind her wasn't a Domani nor had she ever lived in Arad Doman. Though she looked like one in her well cut green dress, her walk wasn't right... Oh, she walked very gracefully but she didn't slide her hips the way every Domani woman had learnt to do as soon as she was out of the little girl's robes. And her speech wasn't right either, it was clipped, too fast and a voice of a woman who was used to get what she wanted right then. Not the soft and enticing kind of voice the Domani used to make people think it had been their idea all the time. Maybe a Cairhienin? Her mother had taught her to recognize people from the other countries and there were always plenty of those around where they lived. Well, what else could you expect when most of the city's trade was focused in this part of it?

And then they were there, right next to Wandering Ways. "Here it is, Mistress. Wandering Ways, the inn you were looking for" she said smiling.
