  1. Without a moments pause, Ariani charged through the first of the Arches.

The wooden floor creaked beneath her bare feet and the smell of something burning filled her nose. Oh, the stew! She rushed to the hearth and pulled

the soup away before it completely scorched.

"Burned the stew again, did we?" a familiar voice said from behind her.

"Tomas!" she said with a squeal as she turned and saw her brother leaning against the doorway and then rushed over to hug him.

"Easy kid," her brother said, his breath catching as she hugged him.

She pulled away from him and frowned as she saw the tear in his shirt and the blood stains, "Does father know?"

He shook his head, and removed his shirt. "No, and he must not. I'm all right. It isn't as bad as it looks," he said and grinned that toothy grin of his.

Ariani sighed and walked away. Tomas had gotten himself into too much trouble with those dice games, and she had begged him to stop. He never listened.

She made her way out onto the porch where she would find her father, and stopped when she realized that he wasn't in his usual place this time of the day.

She stepped off of the porch and around the corner of the house.

The way back will come only once....

Her father lay there, a short distance from the house. His ax laying off to the side of his body, that was pinned under an enormous tree limb. "Tomas!" Ariani screamed,

"Tomas! Quick! Father!" She ran to him, as her brother scrambled down the front steps throwing on a fresh shirt.

    Be steadfast.

Ariani saw a glowing doorway at the barn. When did we put that there?

Tomas was trying to lift the tree from their father. "Sister, help me. I can't..." he struggled to speak, "I can't do this on my own."

She looked back at the door, a feeling of dread coming over her. "No," she whispered as she stared at the door.

"What do you mean no?! He is dying, Ariani, help me!" Tomas yelled at her, "Where are you going?"

"No!" she cried as she ran through the Arch, sobbing as she found herself surrounded by the Aes Sedai again.

"You are washed clean of what sin you may have done and of those done against you. You are washed clean of what crime you may have committed, and of those

committed against you. You come to us washed clean and pure, in heart and soul," an Aes Sedai intoned as she poured icy water over Ariani's head.

She hardly noticed that Valeri Sedai had brought her to the second Arch, and she tried to calm herself as the Mistress of Novices spoke:

"The second arch is for what is. The way will come but once. Be steadfast."

With a growl, Ariani stormed through the second Arch.

    ( OOC: TO BE CONTINUED)

  2. Ariani made her way back to her rooms, pausing in the middle of the hallway to stretch and yawn. She was regretting not taking a nap earlier and

sleep would come fast and easy this evening. Today had been a free day, but she chose to spend it tending one of the seldom used gardens, and it

had drained her. It looked like that particular garden hadn't been tended to in quite some time, so she was happy that she had gotten to it when she did.

She pulled the scarf from her head and allowed her hair to fall free around her shoulders. It had grown since she had been here, but she had never done

anything about the choppy appearance. Her old roommate had begged Ariani to allow her to fix it, but while she trusted Maurelle, she had been too afraid

of being put completely bald. They compromised, and Ariani began wearing a scarf and randomly braided the choppier bits of hair. This was supposed

to be a temporary look, but after Maurelle was moved to a different room, Ariani decided that she liked her hair the way that it was. She was undoing

the last braid when a voice called to her from down the hall.

"Ariani Cairawyn," she barely made out Valeri Sedai at the end of the Hall and dipped a curtsy as the woman continued, "It is time. You are to be tested."

Tested.....now? Light, but it was late and she was half asleep on her feet as it was, how was she to take a test now? She followed the Mistress of Novices

silently though, and made sure not to fall behind. As they passed through the great doors, Ariani couldn't help but smile to herself. She had always wondered

what was behind these doors, had even sworn to sneak inside to look one day, but she never had. Now she was finding out. Down a winding staircase and to

the lowest floor in the Tower they went until they stopped inside of a room.

Ariani paused as she realized where she was, her eyes growing wide in fright. This was the test. Oh Light! Just as quickly she masked her face in calm the way

that she and Maurelle had practiced. She remembered everything that she had been through. She grew up on the roughest streets, she had survived. There had

once been a world full of things that she nothing about and through will, she conquered. She knew that she could do this. You once picked the pocket of an oak

of a Warder. These should be a piece of cake. Just then, her stomach grumbled. Why didn't you take time to eat today, you wool brain?

Three Aes Sedai stood next to one of the Arches, all wearing their shawls, and Ariani noticed that one of them was the one that had brought her to the Tower to

begin with. Another sat in the middle of the floor, the glow of Saidar surrounding her. She quickly turned her attention to Valeri Sedai as she began to speak:

"Two things that no woman hears until she enters this room: Once you begin, you must continue to the end. Refuse to go on, no matter your potential and you will be

very kindly put out of the Tower with enough silver to support you for a year and you will never be allowed back. Second: To seek, to strive, is to know danger. You

will know danger here. Some women have entered, and never come out. When the ter'angreal was allowed to grow quiet, they were-not-there. And they were never

seen again. If you will survive, you must be steadfast. Faltering leads to a failure. This is your last chance, Child. You may turn back now, and you will only have a mark

against you. Twice more you will be allowed to come here, and only at the third refusal will you be put out of the Tower. It is no shame to refuse. Many cannot do it their

first time here. Now you may speak."

A challenge! Ariani tightened her jaw and raised her chin in defiance to the Arches, her icy blue eyes narrowed in determination. "I am ready, Valeri Sedai," she said in a firm voice,

"This is my home now, and I'll not leave it so easily."

Valeri Sedai nodded towards one of the other Aes Sedai, who spoke,

"Whom do you bring with you, Sister?"

"One who comes as a candidate for Acceptance, Sister," Valeri Sedai replied.

    "Is she ready, Sister?"

"She is ready to leave behind what she was, and in passing through her fears, gain Acceptance."

    "Does she know her fears?"

"She has never faced them, but is now willing."

"Then let her face what she fears."

Valeri Sedai turned back to Ariani and asked her to disrobe, which Ariani did and then shivered as the cool air touched her skin. She was then guided to the first Arch.

"The first time is for what was. The way back will come but once. Be steadfast."

Without a moments pause, Ariani charged through the first of the Arches

  3. Ariani fidgeted nervously as Kira read over the letter.  She hoped that she had not been wrong in putting her trust in the girl.

Kira's face was expressionless as she read the letter, and Ariani shifted uncomfortably in her seat. No one had known

anything about her time before the Tower, even the Mistress of Novices didn't know the whole of it. She had been a thief,

and until she received a letter in return for this one, she feared that she was something even worse.

It wasn't long before Kira placed the letter back down on the table and pointed out her mistakes, of which there were very few.

"Your secret is safe with me," Kira finally said after praising Ariani for her work and closing the class.

Ariani stayed in the room long enough to correct her mistakes and seal the letter. It was done, finally. She hurried to get her

    letter sent.
