You all want to assume. Fine, let me put it this way. The first red flag I saw was when Rafe said he was eliminating the relationship between Aviendha, Elayne, Min, and Rand. Not because I agree with polygamy but, because it varies drastically from the book and drops a major story line.

I fully expected that storyline to be dropped. I don't see that as a major story line. It doesn't really add much to the story, and requires time to develop three believable relationships in which three women agree to "share" Rand. I didn't think it was believable in the books and I think it will be even less believable in the adaption.

This story is so vast that major story lines will be needed to be cut, changed, and/or merged with other story lines. It's just what is going to happen. It has to because you can't have people standing around having "info dump" conversations on how Rand's Ta'veren has ensnared three women to him.

I agree that having to many possible romances wouldn't work on a T.V. show. I instead think that instead of Egwene/Elayne its Egwene/Min, with egwene dropping out a little later.

They can keep pretty much the entire relationships intact with minimal changes. Egwene and Rand become more like a brother/sister relationship, while Elayne and Aviendha could be close friendships. The pregnancies could either be written out or explained as one night stands. Perhaps Rand takes on more of Mats personality and is more of a promiscuous ladies man.

  3. I don't understand all the hand wringing. Moiraine and Lan are by far the most mysterious people we are introduced to. We don't know who the Aes Sedai are or what the One Power is. Each character is introduced to the Power in their own time, and Rands is pretty subtle. I don't see why anyone would be annoyed by Moiraine taking center stage to begin with. After all she is the person who introduced each and one of us the the secret world of the Aes Sedai.

  4. I remember reading that too. I think it was BS, but not sure. I just took notice that both words Voice and Singing were capitalized which suggested that there was more meaning behind those words. Perhaps RJ had other plans for the song and changed his mind later on?

  5. I'm starting my reread of the series, and noticed another obscure sentence that made me wonder if this was the "Bubbles of Evil".

    Page 1 of the Prologue:

    Quote

The dead lay everywhere, men and women and children struck down in attempted flight by the lightnings the had flashed down every corridor, or seized by the fires that stalked them, or sunken into stone of the palace, the stones that had flowed and sought, almost alive, before stillness came again. In odd counterpoint, colorful tapestries and paintings, masterworks all, hung undisturbed except where bulging walls had pushed them awry. Finely carved furnishings, inlaid with ivory and gold, stood untouched except where rippling floors had toppled them. The mind-twisting had struck at the core, ignoring peripheral things.

This seems to reference the Bubbles of Evil because the Dark One has touched the world, and tainted the One Power. Kind of cool that this is in the very first paragraph of the series!

  6. Starting my reread over from scratch because it's been several months since I have read Shadow Rising. I'm reading the Prologue now and am wondering if the Tinkers song was known during the Age of Legends?

    On Page Two it reads:

    Quote

"Lord of the Morning," he said, "I have come for you."

The laughter cut off as if it had never been, and Lews Therin turned, seeming unsurprised. "Ah, a guest. Have you the Voice stranger? It will soon be time for the Singing, and here all are welcome to take part.

We know that the Aiel had served and failed the Aes Sedai, and that the Aiel fractured into several societies one of them being the Tuatha'an who spend their time in the series looking for their song. Was LTT referring to the lost song when he asked if the stranger had the "Voice" because it was time for the "Singing"?

If there's anything to reveal I think it will be mentioned at the con. If nothing is mentioned at the con I'd take that as a sign that nothing is actually moving along, cause Harriet et al most definitely want to maintain interest here.

Sadly, I feel like if they were planning on making an announcement of any kind that they would be leaking that info to generate excitement and intrigue, so I don't expect to see any announcements. Hope I'm wrong, but I can't see them not using any information of any kind to get more interest in this convention.

You are assuming that WoT would be their only option though. With LOTR they still have an extremely strong epic fantasy show and WoT would be hugely expensive to produce. For the price of WoT they can probably have 5-10 "normal" TV shows, aka drama, crime, comedy etc. That is the same reason why Netflix has been mostly doing many cheap TV shows and canceling the expensive ones such as Marco Polo and Sense8, you simply get more bang (subscribers) for your buck. I certainly hope I am wrong and Amazon end up dumping a billion or two into WoT over 8-10 season but I am sceptical.

Amazon set aside over a billion dollars for new series. That leaves plenty of money left over after Dark Tower, WoT, and LotR. Keep in mind these are also some of the best completed series in all of literature, and they are more than special effects they are great stories with characters that people love. If done right these three shows will bring in a lot of fans and the buzz of each will only attract more.

  9. All three are really good characters, but their faults lie mainly in the pacing of the series. Rand got too powerful too quick, and RJ had to come up with reasons why he didn't take matters into his own hands sooner. Perrin also got to the end of his arc sooner than the rest, and that was the main reason for his multi-book siege for Faile. I still hope, and everyone here hates the idea, but a reediting of the entire series that lines all the storylines up and have them all climax at nearly the same time. You would need to cut out certain story lines, and rewrite others, but I think it would end up with a tighter story.

  10. So i was digging around the internet for any clue on what network was going to carry The Wheel of Time, and stumbled upon this set of articles...

    http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/20/technology/sony-tv-powers/index.html

Joining streaming television services like Netflix and Amazon, Sony's PlayStation Network has commissioned its first original TV series.

The company said Wednesday that it had ordered 10 one-hour episodes of "Powers," a drama based on the comic book series of the same name. It will be produced by one of Sony PlayStation's corporate sisters, the Sony Pictures Television studio.

My question is this...If Sony Playstation Network is going to start developing original content would that include The Wheel of Time? If so, then would I have to buy a Playstation and join their network to watch it? I really hope not because that would suck. I don't play video games, and don't plan on investing in one just to watch one show where there is no promise of being produced start to finish. Do you guys think that this would be a likelihood, or do you think they would develop the show and sell it to another network?

  11. One reason why we may not be hearing anything other than the project was shelved is that nerds can be a little obsessive. They may be going through different scripts and story boards before making an announcement. The world building could be problematic because it is littered with unique words and phrases, cultures and norms, and presenting them in the wrong way could create for boring TV.

Let’s hope that they are going through different scripts right now!

  12.

Has anyone any ideas, why there are no new announcements regarding the tv show? I am not quite sure, if this is a bad sign, but I hope it isn't...

The more time that goes by with silence, Narg thinks something along the lines of this becomes more likely

Bandersnatch needs to leak something given they have officially been gagged. All the hype, excitement and good will is rapidly dying if not dead already. Put the onus on who ever bought the rights. They've left Harriet holding a big bag of poo. Though I guess if they also left her a big pile of money she probably doesn't care that much.

It seems to me that if the show was shelved that Harriet would be free to let everyone know. There’s no need to remain silent over nothing. There’s some issues going on right now though that’s for certain...

  13.

The market being oversaturated, I agree. Personally I'd like to see a moratorium on all new TV shows for five years to give everyone a chance to catch up on what they want to see before unloading new stuff. But in terms of quality, TV is probably the best it's ever been, and that's backed up by the enormous viewing figures and critical reception across the board.

 This is true regarding movies too. But, you know, I heard this phrase "TV is probably the best it's ever been" so many times...

The market has absolutely never been as favourable for a Wheel of Time TV show right now. If it doesn't get made now, and if as is possible we see a decline or crash in a few years, the chances of it ever being made disappear.

They need min 2 years to prepare everything to start the shooting. And we hear nothing about the buyer, the producers, the casting process etc

The reason that TV is reaching a pinnacle is because of the streaming services and DVR’s. They are now able to tell longer much more complex stories than ever now. Movies aren’t even able to tell these kinds of in-depth stories. In the movies you for the most part have to decide if you want character development or action, but you really don’t have time in a 2+ hour movie to do both. Some can pull it off, but most of the time they just pick sides.

I am worried that the market for these types of shows will be drying up by the time they begin work on it, and because of the saturation point they won’t have the funds to give the show justice. The series really is cursed in a number of ways. Had RJ lived and made better decisions with the rights we may be watching the Wheel of Time on HBO now instead of Game of Thrones...
